In the midst of the January wildcard season, many Fantasy managers are looking to shoehorn as many big guns into their revamped line up as possible. Every penny counts and plenty are on the hunt for regular scoring, cheap to mid-price third striker to free up funds for the likes of Robin Van Persie and Sergio Agüero.

Amongst the standout prospects in this category is Wolves striker Steven Fletcher. Since joining the Midlands club from Burnley in 2010, Fletcher has been crucial to Mick McCarthy’s attack, racking up an impressive 19 goals in 44 games.

This season he’s already scored nine goals, provided one assist and accumulated 13 bonus points for his efforts, with a brace against Sunderland in game week 14 among the pick of his performances. With his eye for goal, Fletcher has managed an average of 5.1 points per game, a ratio which puts the Scot in the top ten forwards this season.

So-called big clubs clearly hold no fear for Fletcher. He has now netted away to Man United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Spurs, having added Harry Redknapp’s side to his list of top gun scalps last weekend, with a typical close-range finish. Indeed, Fletcher seems to thrive more on the road, scoring six of his nine goals away from the home comforts of Molineux.

If you’re on the lookout for a flair striker who can mesmerise defenders with a mazy dribble or unleash a furious lightning strike from 30 yards out, then Fletcher is not for you. In the wonderful world of Fantasy football, however, it doesn’t matter how they go in, as long as they hit the back of the net. What he lacks in style he makes up for in the consistency of a traditional goal poacher. All his goals this season have come from inside the box, with six of those headers.

For those still looking for a replacement for Newcastle’s Demba Ba, who is currently on African Cup of Nations duty, or seeking to transfer out Yakubu, who starts a three-match ban in gameweek 22 after his studs up challenge at the weekend, Fletcher seems to be a plum choice for that potentially lucrative third striker spot. Already, he has risen in price on the back of that goal at the Lane and, as the most transferred-in forward in the gameweek, is now on the verge of yet another price hike. Fletcher currently sits at a more than reasonable 6.0 but looks likely to move to 6.1 overnight.

A glance at their upcoming schedule shows the fixtures certainly fall kindly for Wolves. Over the next seven gameweeks, they play host to (AVL, LIV, WBA, BLA) and travel to (qpr, new, ful), and, as McCarthy looks to steer his team clear of the drop zone and further up the table, Fletcher appears a thoroughly enticing proposition.

No, infact it could be the Mail one, because in the Mirror one you can make transfers right up until the kick off. The Mail one is the first scheduled kick off though, so it could be the Mail one?

exactly and they're away at Stoke and Fulham, 2 very solid defensive teams, especially at home. But I just don't see many decent options for 8.1 for a 2 weeker beyond Bellamy or Fletcher

Like said its good for now, wait until Kompany gets back then invest in him or richards. Or wait until ManU's fixtures ease up and get one of their defenders.

Think there is better out there then Lescott tbh. And with Kompany not running the back, clean sheets are gonna be hard to come by.

          Risky, could pay off though
          Play him.
          No.
Wouldn't have Crouchy personally - Sturridge?

Please stop posting this so much!

          1. As good as any this week
          2. Yes other have better games and can see a low scoring game, Spurs without Ade.
          3. Would rather have another big hitter forward as that is where the points are, No City cov so downgrade mid and get Aguero!
          4. Good for this week but not so next!

Ahhhhh the yak really screwed up my transfer plans. Want to drop BAE but it'll be a 4 point hit. Right now I have simpson, evans, shotton and senderos I'm addition to benny. I was thinking richards or enrique. worth taking a hit for either of those two?

        Post this WC team earlier:
        TEAM A
        Vorm; Lindegaard
Shotton; Kompany; Evans J; Caulker; Jose Enrique
        Silva; Walters; Dempsey; Bale; Nani
        Fletcher; Van Persie; Sturridge
        0.1 in bank

But advice here to downgrade Nani to Valencia got me tinkering. Is this a better team?

        TEAM B
        Vorm; Lindegaard
Shotton; Kompany; Evans J; Caulker; Ferdinand A
        Silva; Walters; Sessegnon; Bale; Valencia
        Aguero; Van Persie; Sturridge
        0.2 in bank

I'm finding it difficult to judge the 2 teams ...
        Jose Enrique > Ferdinand A
        Dempsey > Sess
        Nani ~ Valencia
        Fletcher < Aguero

        RMwcT!!!!

        Krul/Vorm
        Raylor Huth Kompany Shotton Senderos
        Walters Silva Valencia Bale Dempsey
RVP Aguero Fletcher with .1 in the bank!

Know Komp is suspended, but I'm looking long term. Know doubling up on Stoke def could come back to bite me, esp if Shotton doesn't play, so I'm open to suggestions (would have 4.2 for a diff defender). Thanks in advance for the input lads!

          Caulker is 4.0.

Well, not sure on that one - people have been saying 1 more, but FPL has him listed as suspended until 1 Feb which I think is 2 more gw's... so not sure. Maybe I'll go Richards for a few weeks and then switch to Komp if I have a transfer. Thanks for the reply Anders!

Probably a bit late now but your post had me worried ... I've checked.
Sunday, 8 January 2012: Sent of against United in FA Cup. 4 match ban, second red card of season.
Tuesday, 10 January 2012: Appeal dismissed, no increase in band (in the papers)
              Wednesday, 11 January 2012: v Liverpool 1st leg - Carling Cup
              Monday, 16 January 2012: v Wigan Prem
              Sunday, 22 January 2012: v Spurs Prem
              Wednesday, 25 January 2012: v Liverpool 2nd leg - Carling Cup

He'll be back against Everton on the 31st, phew!
