There are few players who can claim as intimate a familiarity with the sublime and the ridiculous as Joey Barton. At times, his tenacious tackling and classy passing dominates games, at others his fiery temper scuppers the prospects of his own unhappy side. With his undoubted talent too often eclipsed by a penchant for self-destruction, Barton’s recent dismissal for a headbutt only furnished a minor footnote to a rap sheet already long enough to be visible from space.

Barton was a popular budget option last term, garnering 131 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points at an initial price of 4.5, as he pulled the strings at Newcastle through a season mercifully free from controversy. A price hike to 6.0 this time round, coupled with a summer move to a QPR side in which Adel Taarabt was first in line for set-plays, considerably dented his appeal as this campaign kicked off. Although Taarabt’s fall from grace under Neil Warnock saw dead-ball duties promptly claimed by Barton, he was unable to recreate last season’s productivity as 2011 wound down with a whimper for the slumping London outfit.

Warnock’s sacking just before a kindly run of fixtures may strike new boss Mark Hughes as ironic, given his own acrimonious exit from Manchester City under similar circumstances in 2009, and, with money to spend, the Welshman will be resolved to grasp this opportunity to turn around QPR’s sinking season.

With transfer rumours quashed and Barton confirmed as retaining the club captaincy it seems logical to infer that he will be central to Hughes’ plans, but with set-pieces the key to his appeal it may be Hughes’ attitude towards the enigmatic absentee Taarabt that ultimately determines Barton’s long-term FPL potential under the new regime.

A well-taken goal followed by the aforementioned headbutt on January 2nd affords a timely reminder of the precarious balance of risk and reward that attends investment in QPR’s captain, but if Hughes’ stern leadership can keep Barton in line he has the price (5.8) and the pedigree to suggest strong value upon his return from suspension this weekend.

With QPR enjoying the kindest run of fixtures of any Premier League side between now and March (WIG avl WOL bla FUL EVE), many wildcard-wielding Fantasy managers will be tempted to take the plunge on their mercurial maverick in the coming weeks. What’s the worst that could happen?

I’d agree with that, hasn’t been given a fair crack of the whip but we don’t see him every day in training. Then again, neither does Mankini if he is with the reserves! Looked pretty handy for Sunderland last year, I’ll keep an eye on that one for sure.

So recently I've been struggling with having Rooney or Aguero has by big striker with RvP. A lot of people seem to fancy Rooney over the past couple days, why is that? He doesn't really have the fixtures and not really much of form..

I'm keeping him for this and the Stoke game and whether he's in my team after that will depend on his performance over these next two games. I'm basically keeping him cos he's been in my team from the start - I'm not sure I'd have brought him in over the last 4-6 weeks tho...

But you're right about his fixtures. If he doesnt score and play well in the next two games I'll certainly swap him for Aguero, his fixtures look much nicer

I prefer that, Fletcher and Dyer for Ramires and Graham looks good.

If your happy with two from Swansea at the back then go for it altho I'd rather double on Stoke or Fulham with their fixtures - depends what money you have

However, if Caulker is 3rd sub for the tough Swansea games then it shouldnt really be a problem....

However, Ramires is a waste of money in my opinion. Sess,Walters, Sinclair etc all look better bets for points or even some budget players like Dyer Moses eyc

As I said above, if Caulker id 3rd sub while the Swans have these tough fixtures then your probably fine, I looked again and theres still 3 games in the next 7 where I'd play him - not bad for a 3rd sub!

one final crazy WC proposal, havent posted one in two days, gimme a break, kinda crazy.

    Sorensen, Lindegaard

    Richards, Santon, Shotton, Caulker, Kelly

    Silva, Bale, Dempsey, Sessegnon, FERGUSON!!!!!

    RVP, Rooney, Aguero

if one doesnt start, i got an ok defender option, if two dont start, i take my 2 points from derry, if three dont start, well then things get even uglier. But my word, the one minute ferguson has been on the pitch this season was glorious, wasnt it? Seriously though, he made the bench last time out, tiote away, cabaye injured, could old ferguson get subbed on for a 1 pointer as my 3rd bench option? (C) Ferguson!!!!

There needs to be a new, more powerful version of the Klaxon for any wildcard team that has the non playing Ferguson in it.

Also there was a very good post by.....eeks, can't remember please hold hand up if its you....about how having RVP, Rooney and Aguero seriously limits the rest of your team.

The very fact that effectively that team is 14 players proves it.

Why not ditch one of rooney or aguero (prob rooney) for a cheaper striker (look at the handy watchlist for ideas) and upgrade Ferguson to a more powerful player.

of course jonty, its ludicrous. i have seen some teams with high rankings that started the year with ferguson though. if the plan is daft after two weeks, save my transfers then get rid of fergie for someone useful, i just think WCing affords you that luxury, even if its is short lived.

Ferguson will only bring you misery. I urge you to splash out a little more t afford McClean, Dyer, even young Moses.

Also by ditching one of Rooney or Aguero you can bolster your defence a little. It's just one player too weak for me.

Caulker will start, but fixtures are poor.
Kelly has a rotation question mark
Shotton has just come back from injury I think.

An injury to Richards or Santon and your defence suddenly looks poor.

          Spread the wealth.

Kelly as a rotation risk - he's been playing instead of Baird for the past few weeks, is this because Baird's been injured? I thought he was out of favour

What are people's thoughts on this?

I have Kelly, Senderos and Dempsey. So I'm expecting big things out of Craven Cottage in the next 2 fixtures. My 3rd defender this week is Santon, whilst Newcastle have been to put it lightly, better than Fulham this year, I don't want to play him. This obviously due to the belief that I think Dempsey will score. At the same time I don't want to put all my eggs in one basket.

Does anyone ever take a defender out, in this example Santon, when faced with a situation such as this?

Nope. I also have Dempsey and Santon but the only reason i'm benching Santon is because he's not one of my strongest defenders this week - nothing to do with playing (and VC) Dempster this week.

I was in that boat but decided that I don't need 2 defenders from Fulham. I had Risse and Senderos. They will probably concede from New and keep the CC against WBA IMO

newcastle are 6th from the bottom in terms of clean sheet odds this week according to Total FPL, add in you are playing dempsey and want him t do well, go ahead and bench santon.

I don't like being so reliant on a team that has been so inconsistent this season. Especially at the back, they have been very hard to predict. Although Fulham are a very solid side at the back at the Cottage, traditionally, I wouldn't go with two of their defenders despite the good-looking fixtures.

      Are you on WC?

Settled on this as my wildcard team. £1.8m in player trading but the result is superior I think.

    Sorensen / Vorm
    Simpson / Lescott / Enrique / Evans / Senderos
    Bale / Silva / Walters / Dempsey / McClean
    Aguero / Sturridge / RVP

£106m with £1m in the bank.

    Thoughts?

getting their priorities wrong - bonus point publication still a big let down... this is probably the biggest issue they should address imo

The time at which they publish the bonus points has been totally inconsistent throughout the season...

They should set a time and work against a deadline - they can't spend all day deliberating on issues such as Rooney assists last weekend.

Clearly they have guidelines - e.g. sticking with PA data. With this in mind, there really needn't be discussion or deliberation on contentious issues. I would have thought, if the PA has given Rooney assist - that is it. Because sometimes I see on chats here is that - FPL are still mulling over this assist, or something...

Main point - Set deadline for publication of bonus points and stick to it rather than have the players check in and out of the websites all morning long... not a good experience

I find funny the way that FPL site is always in construction (like Sagrada Familia in Barcelona).

Now you can choose in the My Team tab if you want to go for latest points or next gameweek.

I dont actually mind Vorm/Mig rotation, give or take a few fixtures.
I understand Cahill is a risk but think its worth it, he could slot right in.
And Lamps is my punt, an expensive one I know but Chelsea's fixtures are hard to ignore.

Yup - particularly useful on the transfer page to see value changes for your players.

Still missing all the cool stats graphs we had on the previous site, but perhaps they will be added back in over time.

My cup opponent hasn't made a transfer for 4 GWs, has Hart on the bench and I still think that he's favourite going into our tie. My hopes basically depend on Fulham putting a couple past Newcastle and Man City not scoring too many against Spurs.
