There are few players who can claim as intimate a familiarity with the sublime and the ridiculous as Joey Barton. At times, his tenacious tackling and classy passing dominates games, at others his fiery temper scuppers the prospects of his own unhappy side. With his undoubted talent too often eclipsed by a penchant for self-destruction, Barton’s recent dismissal for a headbutt only furnished a minor footnote to a rap sheet already long enough to be visible from space.

Barton was a popular budget option last term, garnering 131 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points at an initial price of 4.5, as he pulled the strings at Newcastle through a season mercifully free from controversy. A price hike to 6.0 this time round, coupled with a summer move to a QPR side in which Adel Taarabt was first in line for set-plays, considerably dented his appeal as this campaign kicked off. Although Taarabt’s fall from grace under Neil Warnock saw dead-ball duties promptly claimed by Barton, he was unable to recreate last season’s productivity as 2011 wound down with a whimper for the slumping London outfit.

Warnock’s sacking just before a kindly run of fixtures may strike new boss Mark Hughes as ironic, given his own acrimonious exit from Manchester City under similar circumstances in 2009, and, with money to spend, the Welshman will be resolved to grasp this opportunity to turn around QPR’s sinking season.

With transfer rumours quashed and Barton confirmed as retaining the club captaincy it seems logical to infer that he will be central to Hughes’ plans, but with set-pieces the key to his appeal it may be Hughes’ attitude towards the enigmatic absentee Taarabt that ultimately determines Barton’s long-term FPL potential under the new regime.

A well-taken goal followed by the aforementioned headbutt on January 2nd affords a timely reminder of the precarious balance of risk and reward that attends investment in QPR’s captain, but if Hughes’ stern leadership can keep Barton in line he has the price (5.8) and the pedigree to suggest strong value upon his return from suspension this weekend.

With QPR enjoying the kindest run of fixtures of any Premier League side between now and March (WIG avl WOL bla FUL EVE), many wildcard-wielding Fantasy managers will be tempted to take the plunge on their mercurial maverick in the coming weeks. What’s the worst that could happen?

    HBA currently in team.

He won't be there much longer I suspect! Views on whether to:

    a) keep for one more week, probably benched, to allow flexibility of 2 FTs next week, or
    b) swap now, for little Nathan Dyer, in order to catch Dyer's price, or
    c) if I'm going to keep for a week start him?

Team linked. Grateful for any thoughts. Thanks!

It appears that this week is one of the toughest yet in deciding our captain choices. The difference between getting it right and wrong is going to be one of the major events in deciding who wins oure respective leagues.

The poll seems to show a pretty even spread:

Robin Van Persie (14%, 353 Votes)
    Stephane Sessegnon (10%, 258 Votes)
    Clint Dempsey (9%, 235 Votes)
    Daniel Sturridge (9%, 227 Votes)
    Sergio Aguero (8%, 200 Votes)
    Fernando Torres (7%, 188 Votes)
    Steven Gerrard (7%, 185 Votes)
    Jon Walters (6%, 153 Votes)
    Wayne Rooney (5%, 132 Votes)
    David Silva (4%, 100 Votes)

I am very surprised to see Sessegnon up there given the fact that Swansea will be on a major high after last week. Yes they have been bad away from home but surly last weeks result will have some affect on their morale?!?!?

I am trying to decide between Dempsey & Sturridge, although both come with a warning. Dempsey struggled against 10 men Blackburn and Sturridge maybe a risk, imagine him coming on for 1 min as your captain....it would destroy your game week! I have looked and Walters for the armband but I am not sure I am there yet with him to trust him. As for Rooney and RVP.....I don't fancy either to score highly this weekend!

Who else out there is having a headache with this GW captain choice, anyone care to offer an arguement for anyone?

I think Ageuro due to his good home record. RVP is mr reliable...surely good for a goal. Not quite sold on Silva as captain material yet. Fletcher, Sess and Dempsey are the gamblers' choice.

Very tempted by Fletcher (C). What worries me about it is that he's a bit of an unpredictable goalscorer. He's as likely to score at Old Trafford as he is at home to a weaker side. Most of his goals have come away from home as well.

Anyone understand why morrisson's had nearly 40k NTI but is 20% to rise again according to FISO, whereas Crouch has only had bout 20k NTI but is 32% to rise again? Both have already gone up 0.1 this GW.

Fair to say I'm clutching at any straw possible as only 0.1m away from my ideal WC team so need just one more rise! If simpson would bloody go up one more 0.1 as well that would be fine too but no one's transferring him in! 🙁

Yeah that's what he's on since his last rise according to FISO, but looking at FPL he's had nearly 45k in but only around 4k out. Guess it comes down to how far off he was to rise to start off with. So frustrating though. Unless there's a surge of transfers tomorrow I'm gonna have to take second best.

Jonty do you mind sharing your wildcard team? I agree that if you believe a team will do well, you should get multiples from that team....but I think you're crazy to think Chelsea will do well, especially Torres. Lampard makes sense, but if its only two weeks, he'll be a hard one to move funds around when you get rid. greatly respect your opinion however, and wanted to see how its materializing.

Are you confusing me with someone else? I wouldn't advise anyone to get Lampard (too expensive) or Torres (barn door can't hit scenario).

As regards my wildcard...its available for the world to see. I did it last week so is in my link. Feel free to have a good nosey.

I've gone for a two expensive striker plus one cheaper one strat. Mid of three reliables, with Sess and Ben Arfa rotating and in defence, two 6m ish ones and other cheapies.

Only regret ...not getting a good back up for Vorm.

I do however think Chelsea will do well over the next few weeks. Apart from Man Utd fixtures are pretty good over the next few weeks. If sturridge is back in the line up, he's probably the best. I like the idea of a chelsea defender though and am keeping a close eye on Cahill. Terry and A Cole are luxury picks but are steady scorers.
