Amidst the flurry of second half goals conceded at Fulham last weekend, there was one ray of sunshine for Newcastle; the majestic performance of Hatem Ben Arfa. The Frenchman’s mazy dribbles, in addition to a goal and assist for Danny Guthrie’s screamer, will come as no surprise to Newcastle fans and eagle-eyed Fantasy managers.

Last season Ben Arfa’s flair offered so much promise. Signed on loan from Marseille, he scored on his debut against Everton in September 2010 but just a month later his campaign was in tatters after a typically agricultural challenge by Manchester City’s Nigel De Jong. Such was Newcastle’s faith in Ben Arfa’s recovery and talent that, in the midst of his lengthy treatment in January, the club signed him on a permanent deal.

After breaking down with injury again over the summer, he eventually returned to the first team in September to finally begin his 2011/12 Premier League season. It’s been a tough old slog for Ben Arfa to regain form and a starting spot in the Newcastle team, though slowly but surely he’s getting there. A Boxing Day goal against Bolton was his first in the league this term. An impressive display against QPR in Gameweek 21 followed, before Ben Arfa produced arguably one of the goals of the season with a superb solo effort against Blackburn in the FA Cup earlier this month.

The Fulham game has undoubtedly signalled a full return to form. It was his first 90-minute Premier League appearance of the season and he even earned a bonus point for his efforts; how many players on the wrong side of a five-goal thrashing can say that? So with this French cat well and truly out of the bag, there may well be handsome rewards for those looking to acquire his services over the coming weeks. Currently costing 5.4m and with just 1.6% ownership, he is also among the most talented differentials in the game.

There are caveats, though. Clearly, he is still threatened with rotation. To allow him a starting berth against Fulham, Newcastle’s utility man and free-kick specialist Ryan Taylor made way at the Cottage. It seems unfathomable that Taylor will not be re-installed into the side for the majority of matches and Ben Arfa is among those who could find themselves on the bench. It’s also worth noting that despite Ben Arfa’s individual display, Newcastle seemed a lot less defensively secure- they had shipped just 6 goals in the six fixtures leading up to the Fulham game.

Another issue to consider is his ego. Ben Arfa is certainly not backwards at coming forwards about his talent and is adamant his best position is just behind the strikers, where he can weave his magic. Pardew disagrees and wants Ben Arfa out wide, where he believes he can be more effective.  He also questions Ben Arfa’s work ethic in that number 10 role. So far Pardew has been proved right and Ben Arfa, conscious that he could be in line for an international call up for France during Euro 2012, is happy to just play anywhere for now.

With Papiss Demba Cisse also arriving in the January transfer window, it’s fair to say Ben Arfa’s chances of a place up front are further lessened, with Pardew keen on linking Cisse with Demba Ba up top. Senegal’s exit from the African Cup of Nations means both will be available from gameweek 23 onwards, though it remains to be seen whether Pardew affords the duo a rest after their international exertions and extended travelling time.

Forthcoming fixtures are a mixture (bla,AVL, tot, WOL, SUN, ars, NOR, wba) but he could be a great option to rotate with a Sunderland midfielder like Stephane Sessegnon or the cut-price James McClean. Wildcarders should note that the two northeast clubs’ fixtures rotate very nicely indeed over the coming weeks, affording Ben Arfa further chance to shine; that’s providing Pardew gives him the game time, of course.

Might actually keep Torres for Swansea. Hopefully Lampard will be injured, and we'll have signed Hazard and Willian.

I have him too and I'm sort of pleased he was poor against Norwich so it's easier to sell him. If he had been good but unlucky again I'm pretty sure I would've kept him.

If you sign Hazard I might have to sell Sturridge instead though, hah.

I was worried about that too even though if you asked anyone "who scored?" they'd say "Ivory Coast just scored". Checked my balance and it's been paid in.

I suppose if the toss was to be argued you'd say you bet on a team scoring, not an individual from that team scoring.

All depends what options were open on the bet. If own goal was available then he loses but obviously it wasn't.

I can see the logic of refunding it on the understanding it could be interpreted as falling outside the three categories - Ivory Coast scoring (win), Burkina Faso scoring (loss), no goal (loss). Still, I suppose the number of goals credited to a team is their score, and if it rises, they have scored.

              My online betslip from Bet365:

Selection(s): Ivory Coast to score 2nd goal
Event: Ivory Coast v Burkina Faso (Next Goal)
              Odds: 2.10
              Result: Won

Anyway, the big lesson is that Bet365 credit own goals as the attacking team scoring. Hope that comes in handy.

Ah you're in fair Sheffield! Here in Manchester we have a student bus which is free if you present your student card - but it runs limited hours and you have to pay the instant it leaves the student area . Buses start at £1.10... what pisses me off is how the fares rise as the night goes on... £1.40.... then £2....

There is nothing really left to say about Crazy Bus Lady, she defies all description and it's mostly all there in the name. What did you guys say to her?

My most recent brush with her was a month ago, she got on with her ridiculous bunch of suitcases and went into this totally incoherent lecture about evidence and persecution... people carried on their conversations and she went apeshit they weren't listening to her... 'disrespect'... she did thank someone for listening though... was it you? 😀

This was like 2 years ago when I lived in Fallowfield, she was merely asking us for directions. When we replied and she about to get on her way she said about we were polite and soft spoken. My last sighting of her was before Xmas when she was dragging her bags on to a Magic Bus outside Owens Park. So unfortunately that person wasn't me 😀

Oh it's the Abdul's on the Grosvenor St / Oxford St junction - may be a different one actually now I think about it.

Props to you two for being nice to her... I really did try my best but there's only so much eardrum damage you can take before you just want to get off the bus.

Do you know why she's like this? From what I've pieced together from her speeches, and what people have said, one of her family members was murdered and she believes the Masons did it. Those bags are full of paper evidence, that's why she basically seems to be taking her house with her. everywhere.

Yeah when she goes on her rants, I just tend to ignore them and not really listen. I remember picking up a leaflet from her is first year and it saying something about the Masons as you mentioned. I dont know what exactly her mission is, I dont think many of us do to be honest. A part of me thinks that she must be mentally ill.

but with Arsenal getting Sagna and Gibbs back they should be more solid and Verm will move to cb where his attacking potential can return, I'd get Verm for the next 2 weeks, but I''d maybe keep Evans at least for this week.

TOT-WIG and EVE-MCI will both be games dominated by the favourites, I expect them to lay siege to the Wigan and Everton goals, push up, and both fullbacks (BAE and Richards) could have an absolute feast overlapping on the wings and getting the crosses in. Not to mention the CS looks pretty likely, WIG and EVE have some of the worst attacks in the league.

The only thing holding me back from Skrtel to Richards at the moment is the fact that i'd prefer to have Kompany, but can't afford him without downgrading elsewhere.

Though I'm sure I can invest an extra 0.2 from Richards over Komp in my team somewhere.

Can't afford Komps right now even though he's my preferred choice.

Annoying part is I had Richards in my WC team up til Friday night, when I switched him for Skrtel on the basis that liverpool would probably get a cleanie and I would've been benching Richards against Spurs this week anyway. As it turns out I don't fancy two liverpool defenders any more

I'm desperately trying to hold of WC until next GW as I've got a pretty good team for this GW..

      Current
      Vorm (ruddy)
      Richards/ BAE/ Enrique (Simpson/ macauley)
      Silva/ Dempsey/ Sess/ bale (fergie)
      VP/ Ade/ sturridge

      W/c team
      Vorm/ Sorensen
      Kompany/ Evans/ Simpson/ Kelly/ Cahill (if he gets a start)
      Dempsey/ silva/ Valencia/ bale/ Sess
VP/ dzeko/ sturridge (into ba as soon as he's ready to go)

1 - should I wait or hit the W/C button? As prices going up for some and if keeps going up I'll miss buying them
2 - what you guys think about my W/C team? Is there something I'm missing?

I like it, though i'd take Brown or Taiwo/Ferdinand over Cahill at the moment as I'm not sure Cahill will slot straight in to start. Once JT gets banned for racism on the other hand he'll be a shoe i

Dzeko is the only one likely to rise tonight that you're bringing in, but if cash is tight go for it

Not sure there's any point in putting Valencia in after this week but I agree with getting rid of Adebayor.

I wouldn't go Dzeko - could see him getting dropped for BLA and BOL coming up soon when Balotelli is back. Not convinced they're scoring loads of goals at Everton or Villa.

        Definitely don't wildcard this week.

Consider taking Vorm out of your WC team - take a look at Mignolet. I can't see Swansea keeping up their defensive form at home with their tougher fixtures. I had Vorm from the start but sold last week - don't get hung up on losing value in the second half of the season because it doesn't win you any prizes in May!

A few thoughts there, hopefully 1 of them helps in some way.

Don't think so - I just tend to use FISO.

He's on 82% there now, 1000 in today - if he goes up on, say Saturday night he could easily rise again.

Keane has taken 5 days to get ~20,000 transfers in - that 82% of a first rise. At this rate alone he won't rise twice, but taking into account the rush before the new GW, possible.

Yeah that's the uncertainty, you know basically more transfers happen on the eve of the new GW than every other day combined, you just don't know how extreme it's going to be.

I'm holding Zamora and Morison at the minute but might jump ship for Keane depending on how transfers go at the weekend - I say weekend because I think many people will transfer like they do every weekend, even though the deadline is later.

If you'd got Morison for his first rise this GW you might have got a second rise out of a him (no ho-.....) because he's way up there in the rankings for cheap strikers and the casuals might get him in on Friday. But no one else really.
