Amidst the flurry of second half goals conceded at Fulham last weekend, there was one ray of sunshine for Newcastle; the majestic performance of Hatem Ben Arfa. The Frenchman’s mazy dribbles, in addition to a goal and assist for Danny Guthrie’s screamer, will come as no surprise to Newcastle fans and eagle-eyed Fantasy managers.

Last season Ben Arfa’s flair offered so much promise. Signed on loan from Marseille, he scored on his debut against Everton in September 2010 but just a month later his campaign was in tatters after a typically agricultural challenge by Manchester City’s Nigel De Jong. Such was Newcastle’s faith in Ben Arfa’s recovery and talent that, in the midst of his lengthy treatment in January, the club signed him on a permanent deal.

After breaking down with injury again over the summer, he eventually returned to the first team in September to finally begin his 2011/12 Premier League season. It’s been a tough old slog for Ben Arfa to regain form and a starting spot in the Newcastle team, though slowly but surely he’s getting there. A Boxing Day goal against Bolton was his first in the league this term. An impressive display against QPR in Gameweek 21 followed, before Ben Arfa produced arguably one of the goals of the season with a superb solo effort against Blackburn in the FA Cup earlier this month.

The Fulham game has undoubtedly signalled a full return to form. It was his first 90-minute Premier League appearance of the season and he even earned a bonus point for his efforts; how many players on the wrong side of a five-goal thrashing can say that? So with this French cat well and truly out of the bag, there may well be handsome rewards for those looking to acquire his services over the coming weeks. Currently costing 5.4m and with just 1.6% ownership, he is also among the most talented differentials in the game.

There are caveats, though. Clearly, he is still threatened with rotation. To allow him a starting berth against Fulham, Newcastle’s utility man and free-kick specialist Ryan Taylor made way at the Cottage. It seems unfathomable that Taylor will not be re-installed into the side for the majority of matches and Ben Arfa is among those who could find themselves on the bench. It’s also worth noting that despite Ben Arfa’s individual display, Newcastle seemed a lot less defensively secure- they had shipped just 6 goals in the six fixtures leading up to the Fulham game.

Another issue to consider is his ego. Ben Arfa is certainly not backwards at coming forwards about his talent and is adamant his best position is just behind the strikers, where he can weave his magic. Pardew disagrees and wants Ben Arfa out wide, where he believes he can be more effective.  He also questions Ben Arfa’s work ethic in that number 10 role. So far Pardew has been proved right and Ben Arfa, conscious that he could be in line for an international call up for France during Euro 2012, is happy to just play anywhere for now.

With Papiss Demba Cisse also arriving in the January transfer window, it’s fair to say Ben Arfa’s chances of a place up front are further lessened, with Pardew keen on linking Cisse with Demba Ba up top. Senegal’s exit from the African Cup of Nations means both will be available from gameweek 23 onwards, though it remains to be seen whether Pardew affords the duo a rest after their international exertions and extended travelling time.

Forthcoming fixtures are a mixture (bla,AVL, tot, WOL, SUN, ars, NOR, wba) but he could be a great option to rotate with a Sunderland midfielder like Stephane Sessegnon or the cut-price James McClean. Wildcarders should note that the two northeast clubs’ fixtures rotate very nicely indeed over the coming weeks, affording Ben Arfa further chance to shine; that’s providing Pardew gives him the game time, of course.

Throw some differentials (< 5% ownership) that you think will score well for the next 6 weeks in your opinion, in each position?

    GK - LindeGas/Kenny
    D - Lescott/Kelly

aye, no room him for me now though, and i would imagine for most. RVP is locked in, then you could have aguero or rooney, and then ba or zamora, sturridge.

not good enough for 2nd striker, too expensive for 3rd. But after the city game, i may be considering.

    Alreet lads

I probably was getting ahead of myself with my earlier comments. What I should have said, was that our first 11, is a match for anybody. ie on our day, we can beat anybody.

We absolutely dominated Man Utd at home (after drawing away). People say that Man Utd weren't at full strength, but they weren't too far off. And we were missing saylor, barfa and cisse from what I would consider to be our best 11. We've also drawn with spurs and arsenal, and were unlucky to lose to city and chelsea.

Krul, Santon, Saylor, Colo, Tiote, Cabeye, Barfa, Ba, Cisse would all challenge for the 1st team squads (not necessarily the starting 11) of any team in the league. Jonas and Simpson aren't as good, but would get into most teams outside of the top 6.

Our squad isn't strong enough to challenge for the 4th Champions league spot. Hopefully that will be improved over the summer. But saying that, I fully expect the teams above us to improve as much, if not more, so it might be harder than ever to get there

I'm sorry for sounding like the stereotypical toon fan with ideas above our station. The cisse signing has just really excited me. And its been a LONG team since i've been able to get excited a toon fan. The fact that it looks like we won't be selling anyone in the window is great too

If you had been on the toon message boards much, you would see that, far from me being a stereotypical toon fan, the majoirty have fans are as pessimistic as they come. Doom and gloom has been the name of the game. Even for much of this season. I would much rather be optimistic about our chances than always think the worst!

The thing is, is it was pardew who insisted that we finalized the barfa purchase. He was only on loan before Pardew came. So he must like him. And he would have known that he isn't the type to track back all game. I'm hoping that Pardew just wants him to work a little bit harder, and close people down, rather than expecting him to be a Jonas type winger. And he is already starting to do that.

I think that once tiote returns, and we have a base of tiote and cabeye with Jonas (arguably the hardest working winger in the league) to cover any dangerous winger, that we will be strong enough to allow Barfa to do his thing.

Saying that, from what we have seen, it is just as likely that he will stay on the bench, go in the huff, and be sold next season. Watch this space!

Yes, they MIGHT. If we have a massive injury crisis. But saying that we don't, how many players from those teams that you have mentioned, would get into the toon first team? You could argue haangerland for saylor (but I wouldn't agree), sessegnon or larsson for Jonas or Barfa (maybe), and a right back (not sure who though). Can't think of anyone else.

to think how low newcastle looked in most people's view at the beginning of the season. Carrol long gone, Nolan off to West Ham, Barton leaves, Enrique leaves. There was talk of a relegation battle.

To even speculate about CL is a major accomplishment. Ditching Carroll looks genius. The additions have been fantastic. Nothing but bright days at newcastle right now.

Arsenal 0 - 0 (home). I would have said a draw was a fair result. But maybe you guys could have shaded it by 1.
Spurs 2-2 (home). Definitely a fair result
Man City (away) - 3-1. We had more clear cut chance than them in open play. And were handicapped by raylor at left back and no tiote
Man Utd (away) 1-1. Battling performance
Chelsea (home) 1-3. Was 1-1 until injury time, by which time we were playing with no centre backs as saylor and colo had gone off injured
Man Utd (home). 3-0. Absolutely dominated them. Lucky goals????????

              Okay you're making stuff up here and missing things completely;
Man City (away) - they were by far the better team, they didn't even play Silva so you can't say any side was 'handicapped' as Silva is 3 times the player Taylor and Tiote are put together. It was 3-0 until you got a consolation goal in the 89th mnute
United (away) - that Penalty, enough said.
Chelsea (home) - it was 3-0, Newcastle didn't score, it wasn't 1-1 until injury time.

As well as Valencia at right back.
Look who they were replacing - Vidic at CB, Smalling/Jones at RB, Cleverley in midfield and Valencia on the wing is a class above Jones at CB, Valencia RB, Giggs midfield and Park on the wing.
Also, since when has Barfa even been playing in a full-strength Newcastle team?
And as much as Newcastle have impressed me, honestly, they were no where near Chelsea (who have been pretty poor) and City, who didn't even start the best player in the PL.

Lets be serious though JOA, Ba has boosted them IMMENSELY. Without Ba i doubt they would have scored half the goals, nevermind be in the top half of the table.

Its really a joke comparing them to the top teams, the only contenders by position would be ba. Thats it. Maybe krul on a good day, but he's too inconsistent.

            Santon-prospect, but still maturing
CBs- eek, dont wanna go there

according to him newcastle can take on any team on their "given day". But in all honesty any team in the EPL can win on any given day because its that competitive. Combined with a little luck anything can happen.

                Blackburn 3-2 Utd (lucky pen)
                Newcastle 1-1 Utd (lucky pen)

                etc..

Yes. But there is a difference between a team bottom of the league, getting a one off win thanks to a couple of breakaway goals and wayward finishing from man utd, to a team in 6th in the league absolutely dominating them and winning 3-0.

Ahhh. The beauty of differing opinions in football. I would say that I have the benefit of watching us every week. But then I do watch them with black and white tinted glasses!! As I said, I think that other than simpson and jonas, the rest are top top players. We'll return to this conversation at the end of the season.

Our spine of Krul, Colo, Tiote and Ba is awesome.

Other than Ba, there a far greater options out there!

Never said that, he stated they were "top top players"

Thats going a bit over the edge. They have decent players that get the job done. Not undermining any of their abilities, but to claim they are top players, they are not.

Players such as Silva and RVP and Ba are top players, dont put them on the same level as Coloccini and Tiote...

I am not saying anything about finishing in a top position- i agree toon has the ability of a top 10 or even 8 finish. But please, DONT EVER call coloccini or tiote a "top top player" 🙂

That would put them in the same boat as messi, ronaldo, etc. Catch my drift 😉 Stick to supporting your club, but dont make ignorant remarks about the players

Either way you look at it, youre being stubborn. Theres no way on earth coloccini can compete for a starting CB position against the likes of: Vermaelen, Terry, Vidic, Ivanovic(when fit), etc.

Maybe Tiote, who i rank the 3rd best CDM after Essien(when fit) and Song

And probably our best player of the past two seasons. I definitely think that he is up there with the ones that you mentioned, other than Vidic (who I think is the best centre back in the league)

Barfa is a selfish(most of the time) lazy, player who seems like he plays for himself. Nevermind he can't even win a starting XI spot in an average newcastle squad.

You can't dismiss Ben Arfa's performance vs Fulham though.
He is a great player and has performed in his limited opportunities, he is lazy though, I agree.
Also, Oxlade Chamberlain has been impressive, but against Leeds he was pretty poor, he has talent, but you can't judge him on one good game.

Would very much appreciate some feedback on my WC draft team.

    0.5m in the bank.

    Vorm , Stockdale
    Caulker, Simpson, Clichy, Kompany, Riise
    Buzsaky, McClean, Dempsey, Bale, Valencia
    Ba, Van Persie, Aguero

I think the 2def/1att comb from Man C is what I want. Depending on when Ba will be back I might just put him on the bench or swap him for someone for a GW or too.

Zableta? I don't know, and you are correct the stats show him as being promising.

Basically, i'd like a city full back. If Clichy and Richards started the same number of games, I would personally pick Clichy.

        Puntastic!

Well lets break it down shall we. Buzz and McC are really there as fillers, i've picked them based on the fact that they are showing promise, but if they sit on the bench for a while then thats not too much of a problem.

Tbh i'm unsure of Clichy, if he is nailed on then I'm keeping, but is that the case?

Riise isn't that much of a punt, Fulham have a good run, and he poses a good attacking threat IMO.

Do Buzsaky & McClean rotate well? I'm going for Moses/McClean = ultimate dynamite combo!

Get Schwarzer in & hope he's back from hospital this week.

I love your City defs & Riise as a differential.

Why Aguero over Silva though? You have loads of options for cheap strikers (BZ/Helguson/Studge) all with good fixtures.

Kun + Buz > Helguson + Silva for me.

Well after having read a post a while ago that basically quashes most reasoning...i'm just going with my gut. I want an alternative captain choice and I feel that with Kun's home fixtures that might be a good shout.

However, your suggestion is quite tempting as I think Helguson should be a good outlet.

          Guts? Fair enough.

However, if you go by stats, you'll realize any City player isn't quite a good captaincy pick on any certain week unless it's a gamble. Players like RVP, Helguson, Fletcher, Ba, etc are more impt to their team's goal-scoring, so much so that you could consider captaining them even during a mediocre fixture.

Currently on wildcard. my squad is

    linde sorenson

    kompany huth dawson simpson senderos

    silva bale dempsey valencia sess

    rvp dzeko ba

i want dzeko for the next 3 games over kun but want kun back once balotelli is available again. so my transfers for the next 3 weeks are:

Dawson to taiwo, sess to mcclean and dzeko to kun.

My question is is it worth doing this or should i just get kun taiwo and mcclean straight up?

Yes may be a defender skrtl or enqriue( for the baps) , but it also depends on the other team they'll face that DGW because 2 clean sheets arent gauranteed.. Everton tend to score against Liverpool..

Guess we'll have to see when the fixtures are announced to go with a Liv def or not..

What do you reckon Fuzzy? He seems a pretty good price to me, even assuming cleanies will be thin on the ground.

i think the climate is right (fixtures, price, potential) to take a punt. Im dropping enrique for him next week if things work out.

Goodnight all, good luck to those on WC this week!

Either stay with the flock: RVP, Aguero, Ba, Bale, Silva, Dempsey, Valencia, Sess, Richards, Enrique etc.

or stray on your own: Helguson, Adebayor, Dzeko, VDV, Mata, Barton, Sinclair, Lescott, Taiwo etc.

    Think about it 😉

Pick 2 to play from this 4.

    Sturridge, Ben Arfa, Enrique, Simpson.

Was thinking play Ben Arfa and Simpson.

    Any objections?

Normally I wouldnt but they are away to wolves.. Even if Liverpool win theres a good chance they'll concede 1 freaky goal..

Plus Liverpool will have played too many games by that time.. away to bolton on saturday, City last night and Utd int he FA Cup.. think they will be a little depleted/fatigued..

But you do realize it is the same newcastle defence that conceded 5 to an average fulham attack?

Well you can also say that this is the same Liverpool defense who conceded 3 to a Bolton side...

TBH I wouldnt start both of them this weekend if I had them in my team..
