Gareth Bale is at the double to down an out-of-sorts Wigan, with Luka Modric also chipping in at the Lane. Scott Sinclair produces once again at home for Swansea, Antonio Valencia picks up yet another assist, Man City continue to struggle for goals on their travels and a buoyant Liverpool sweep aside Wolves at Molineux:

Gareth Bale
His seventh double-figure points haul of the season saw Bale forge ahead of David Silva as the top-scoring Fantasy Premier League (FPL) midfielder. It’s an indication of his form this term that only Robin Van Persie has returned more points than the Welshman. Bale’s brace in the 3-1 win over Wigan means he has returned attacking points in every home game but one since gameweek 10; with the 3 bonus points surely in the bag, those who chose to captain him look like grabbing 30 points after last night’s display. Despite a schedule that reads (liv, NEW, ars, MUN), it’d take a bold Fantasy manager to get rid of Bale from here on in.

Luka Modric
The Croatian tends to be one of those players who, despite their undoubted talent, tend to frustrate as a Fantasy force. Last night saw Modric come to the fore and take on a starring role alongside Bale, returning a goal and assist for his Fantasy owners. In total, it was a 10 point haul for Modric, only the second time he’s hit double-figures this season. Closer look at Modric’s figures show that, since the end of gameweek 10, he has comfortably outscored Rafael Van der Vaart by 59 to 44. Granted, the Dutchman’s tendency to pick up injuries hardly helps his cause- he was subbed off just after the half-hour mark with a calf problem, according to Harry Redknapp.

Benoit Assou-Ekotto
An assist in his side’s win propelled the Cameroon international up to second in the defenders chart. Assou-Ekotto has now returned 5 assists compared to Kyle Walker’s 1 this term and continues to offer a far greater threat going forward than his fellow full-back, but with that aforementioned run of fixtures on the horizon, he’ll be relying on more of the same over the next month, with clean sheets looking unlikely.

Scott Sinclair
The winger opened the scoring against his old side, netting for the fourth home game in the last five. Echoing the Fantasy hauls of Jonathan Walters, Sinclair continues to keep his returns purely for home games- this was his seventh goal of the campaign, with every one coming at the Liberty Stadium. Pre-bonus, Sinclair has picked up 74 points in front of his own fans this season, compared to 26 on the road.

Gylfi Sigurdsson
Afforded a 67 minute appearance by Brendan Rodgers, the on-loan Icelander once again shone for Swansea. Sigurdsson has now played a significant part in his side’s last two home games, helping the Welsh club pick up four points against Arsenal and Chelsea. His previous home appearance saw him climb off the bench to set up Danny Graham’s winner, while last night he provided the assist for Sinclair’s early goal against the Blues.

Michel Vorm
Neil Taylor’s last-minute own goal proved a huge source of frustration for the Dutchman’s Fantasy owners. Vorm’s early-season heroics has seen him snapped up by 35.6% of Fantasy managers- the same number as Robin Van Persie- but there’s no doubt his returns have been diminishing. While Swansea’s away form has improved as the season has unfolded, their ability to stop opponents from scoring at the Liberty Stadium continues to dry up. The 1-1 draw with Chelsea was the fourth home game in a row that Vorm and co have failed to keep a clean sheet.

Gary Cahill
The former Bolton man is finding it difficult to break into the Chelsea first-team. Despite John Terry being absent with a knee problem, Andre Villas-Boas decided to keep Cahill benched, drafting in Branislav Ivanovic alongside David Luiz and keeping faith with Jose Bosingwa at right-back. While Bosingwa picked up an assist for Chelsea’s late leveller, fellow full-back Ashley Cole received his marching orders for a couple of cautions and will miss Sunday’s game with Man United. If Terry is passed fit, Cahill could once again find himself on the bench, with the possibility of Bosingwa moving left and Ivanovic taking over at right-back.

Jonny Evans
The champions once again delivered a shutout with Evans back in the defence. In his last seven appearances, United have conceded just 2 goals, with the Irishman collecting four clean sheets for his Fantasy owners in that spell, having been replaced at half-time against Wigan due to a calf problem. With Phil Jones still troubled by injury, Evans is becoming established as the key Fantasy option in the United rearguard, with his 4.5 price tag looking somewhat irresistible as a route into a title-chasing defence.

Antonio Valencia
The success story continues – with Nani and Wayne Rooney sidelined, the Ecuadorian delivered yet another assist in United’s 2-0 win. Felled for the spot-kick converted by Dimitar Berbatov, Valencia has now delivered 9 assists in as many games – an incredible run. Further Fantasy investment has followed, with only Gareth Bale commanding more transfers-in so far in the Gameweek, in the midfield bracket.

Sergio Aguero
The Argentine’s form will be a major concern for Roberto Mancini and his Fantasy owners alike. Aguero has delivered patchy scoring runs all season and is once again in a slump, having delivered just a single goal in his last six league outings. The blank at Everton perhaps shouldn’t come as a surprise – Aguero has returned just a single assist in his last seven away games in the league. Despite that form, the City remains a popular transfer option, with a fixture list that delivers three attractive home matches (FUL, avl, BLA, BOL) in the next four. Fantasy managers will be looking for immediate returns from Saturday’s encounter with Fulham.

Edin Dzeko
The Bosnian is, of course, the cut-price alternative to Aguero and, with his illustrious strike partner struggling for returns, Dzeko may well convert a few more Fantasy managers before Saturday’s deadline. With Mario Balotelli facing another two league games out through suspension, Dzeko looks assured of starts against Fulham and Villa. His form, in terms of raw Fantasy returns, is far from encouraging however, with just a single goal in his last five appearances. The fact is then, City are clearly misfiring, having drawn blanks in three of their last six. Ironically, six of their seven goals in that spell have come in their two most difficult fixtures – against Liverpool and Spurs. With United grinding out results, City desperately need to turn their obliging short-term fixtures into points – Fantasy managers will hope that the goal output will increase accordingly.

Everton’s Defence
Eyebrows were raised when Tony Hibbert lined up alongside Johnny Heitinga in the Everton defence and yet Hibbert, along with his team-mates, put up a disciplined display to keep City out. David Moyes’ defence have kept three clean sheets in their last eight league games, conceding just seven goals in that spell. While goals have remained hard to come by, the Everton defence has provided a strong platform for the Toffees to earn results. The signing of Nikica Jelavic could signal a upturn in fortunes at the sharp end, while there could still be value in the back-four. With fixtures stiffening, however, in addition to a blank gameweek 26, investment in Everton’s mid-price assets may be placed on ice.

Liverpool’s Defence
The red side of Merseyside also boasts a defence in form; the clean sheet at Molineux was Liverpool’s fifth in the last nine league games. Like Everton, Kenny Dalglish’s side have struggled to offer a consistent goal threat but the defence have stepped up accordingly. Wolves had scored in every home match since gameweek 5 and were on a nine-game scoring streak prior to last night but their visitors, perhaps buoyed by their recent cup exploits, were never in any danger at the back- Jose Reina make just one save on the 90 minutes. With (TOT, mun, blank, ARS) up next, though, they may well be hard-pushed to continue such strong returns in the short-term.

Charlie Adam
The Scot claimed his ninth and tenth assists of the season in the 3-0 win over Wolves, taking him above last season’s tally for Blackpool. Adam’s creativity has blossomed at Anfield – only David Silva has provided more assists. Despite this, in Fantasy terms, Adam has rarely tempted investment, thanks mainly to just 2 goals so far; Adam scored 12 times in his season with the Seasiders. Without spot-kicks in his locker, his goal threat has reduced considerably and Adam’s starting role and pitch time are also in doubt. With Steven Gerrard back in the frame, Adam’s is not assured of a start, despite his form, and he has completed 90 minutes just once in his last six league outings.

Andy Carroll
The forward grabbed his first league goal since gameweek 10 last night. Carroll also provided an assist in the previous gameweek’s defeat at Bolton, producing attacking returns in back-to-back fixtures for the first time this season. Just as Carroll is starting to adapt to a role as a lone forward and beginning to pick up Fantasy points, Liverpool welcome back Luis Suarez for the home clash with Tottenham this weekend. There’s little doubt their goal threat seems to be improving, though; the 3-0 win meant Kenny Dalglish’s side scored more than 2 league goals on the road for the first time this season.

ok here it folks, the moment you've been waiting for

    Schwarzer/Mignolet

    Huth, Richards, Taiwo, Santon, Clark

    Silva, bale, Valencia, McLean, Sess

    RvP. Aguero, Zamora

Hoping Sess will go up tonight so i can sell him on and then Huth will become Verm. May also go for Cisse over Zamora as i feel Cisse is the guy who'll be the main striker, with Zamora as second striker.

Plan is for Sess to become Murphy, as McLean and Sess is unnecessary. I don't see that a fast, mobile goal poacher will be playing behind a stronger target man type striker. Though either will be good choice I fell if Cisse's price is too much.

    GOAL DIFFERENCE

With the two Manchester clubs tied on points at the top of the Premier League, you may hear the media and fans who are fond of a good old footballing cliché proclaiming that goal difference may be the deciding factor come the end of the season. It may be, but the liklihood is it won't be.

It's a rarity and to be honest I'm not sure it is something that should be wished for. The 2002-03 SPL when Rangers and Celtic tied on 97 points but Rangers' +73 topped Celtic's +72 is one that lives long in the memory for good and bad reasons. It was probably one of the most epic final days of a season you are likely to see, a true Helicopter Sunday. It was undoubtedly an enthralling and fair way to decide the league but with only one goal in it, the victory felt a little hollow and unjust. I'm sure a lot of Rangers fans (KOL?) will disagree... but as a neutral I think it would have been even more exciting to have a play-off decider but one has to accept that "thems the rules".

Anyhow at this stage of the campaign, with 23 games played, City and United have both been very impressive in terms of their goalscoring. Man City are currently on +41 and Man Utd on +35. To the untrained eye, that may be an underwhelming stat but let me put that into context for you. Last season United won the league by a comfortable 9 point margin but only registered a final goal difference of +41. In fact, the average final goal difference of the Champions for the last 10 years is +51 and even this figure is skewed by Ancelotti's freescoring Chelsea side of 2010 who finished with a mammoth +71 (the average figure is +48 if you disregard that anomaly).

I could go on (and being the long-winded bastard that I am, I most definitely can) but you get the point. Okay it is not Real Madrid (+51 after 20 games) and Barcelona level (+47 after 20) but I don't want to get into a debate on whether La Liga is as competitive as the EPL (because clearly it is not :P). If you want to look at another league why not go back to the SPL, where Celtic and Rangers are even more dominant than City and United are in England. After 22 games Celtic are on +23 after 24 games and Rangers are on +33 after 25 games.

With that in mind City and United's goal difference is pretty impressive if you ask me.

          Thanks for this IT.

TBH I think that deciding the league positions on goal difference is one of the things that helps a league be competitive.

Whilst one off deciders are obviously unfair (though exciting), using a team's H2H stats (a la Spain) also reduces incentive to win ALL possibnle games and continue to score after a game has been decided.

          That's my tuppence.

Ginkapo, I agree wih you about not wanting a 2-team league, but that's bye the bye.

I've read your latest reply to my post a couple of pages back but it's run out of reply options. Anyway, looking at your team, I think we come at this from different angles. You've spent a lot more than me in defence and less in attack, whereas I prefer things the other way round. I can see your point of view, but it's done me ok in the past, although I may need a rethink for this last part of the season, we'll see.

I'm planning on swapping Shawcross to a Tott defender, may BAE in GW28 when they have a good run through till the end and will have that and Enrique as my 2 mainstays with 3 cheap rotating defs, barring injury/out of favour etc. So maybe we'll have to beg to differ on this one and take stock at the end of the season.

Thanks for the input though, I will bear it in mind as an option from now on.

It was an outstanding day, with both teams winning comfortably, I think it was an artera penalty that decided it for us and oniell complained that Dunfermline lay down. Was the greatest feeling ever. A play off in glasgow would have enduced a riot and likely 4+ sending offs. The referee would likely be subject to abuse for the rest of his life.

        I'm sketchy on the details.

I remember Celtic won 4-0 and Rangers won 6-1 and it was that extra goal that sealed the win. No idea on the goalscoreres or even the opposition but I don't think I have ever seen drama like it, the type of mayhem normally reserved for cup finals not a round of league matches.

Yeah perhaps the play off idea wouldn't have worked considering there would have been actual murder. 😯

How does this sudden transfer work do you suppose? Farewell drink with fish and chips with the Fulham boys before he cleans out the locker and saunters down the road with his kit-bag? Would be weird leaving a club mid season I reckon!

BAE said some honest comments about this very fact! He sees Spurs as his employers, will never kiss the crest on his shirt coz he feels no emotional attachment to the club, he does a job and they pay him.

Sad really... but that's modern sport for ya!! Makes you admire the one-club men who would die for their team mates!

He said that a while back, yeah - and it probably gives him some detachment.

I think Spurs' form over the last 18 months has affected him though, even if he didn't think it would.

Ba due back tomorrow I think.
He should be involved at the weekend, but how much may depend on how the forwards perform tonight, but after recent performances from Ameobi / best, the sooner he's in the starting lineup the better as far as I'm concerned.

Aye, bad enough losing tiote without losing cabaye as well.
To be fair Guthrie's done alright, but I think we'll struggle without cabaye as well.

Collocini should be back though which is a big plus.

      Hmmm I'm not sure.

Sess could outscore Walters in their game at the Britannia. With the question marks over whether Walters will take the PKs anymore, he is a risk imo.

Pulis has backed him on pens. I agree Walters overall contribution is pants compared to Sess, however for a 3-4 week stint he's ideal.

I had Walters for many many weeks.

He may still score ok, but stoke have their eyes on another prize this season + less OOP now + agricultural player = he won't maintain scoring, esp when the ground thaws (ie: in 6 weeks or so).

Dempsey is now my Walters, thanks to £ cashed in.

Its going to be probably one of two. He might try a 4-3-3 with a front six of

      ___Ba__Cisse__Ben Arfa___

      ___Jonas__Tiote__Cabaye___

Which could be effective but pretty vulnerable. Although we do a good job of pressing so maybe it could work. Otherwise expect a variant of 4-4-2 with a front six of

      ________Ba___Cisse_________

      Jonas_________________Ben Arfa

      _______Cabaye___Tiote________

That could be the more likely scenario.

      Bale will rip anyone apart.
      Silva decent game
Valencia against a makeshift left back = points
      RVP easy game
      Aguero decent
Fletcher against a newly formed QPR backline.
Walters at home, and thats the only place he scores.

Why is Zamora suddenly getting love on here? I know QPR have decent enough fixtures but he's always been infuriatingly inconsistent for FPL.

Getting paid twice as much, should halve his output if Carroll and Torres are the template. I hope not, however!

Better options in the same price bracket. I'd rather have Fraizer Campbell - there I said it.

          Yikes!

I'll admit I brought him in with Fulhams decent fixtures and now he's jumped ship the new fixtures aren't all that bad either... so he can stay for now!

He's not though, well not as I remember from last season. He'd score big one week, then feck all for a few weeks etc.

I really can't understand why QPR is very keen on getting so many average players instead of a two or three gifted players.

Well Attilla Zamora is one of the most consistent attackers fantasy wise. He is bringing points whenever he is given the chance to play, Goal or assist more often then nothing in a game. Also great PPG since I am playing FF.

I'd keep R Taylor for Sunday, now that Cabaye is out for 3 games - wait and see if he plays in midfield.

Not sure I'd be getting Evans in with his run of fixtures but that said, he's a cheap way into a solid defence.

Afternoon chaps, my current defence is:

    Richards – Skrtel – BAE – Santon – Caulker

Do I need to get rid of Skrtel/BAE/both for their upcoming run of tough fixtures (bearing in mind I may want to get one or both back in)? Are there any obvious replacements?

I have 2 FTs and 0.4 in the bank.

    Thanks!

yes. Lose BAE for a QPR defender and get Verm/Huth for Skrtel

BAE may also have a ban coming if the FA look into his tackle on Di Santo last night.

Id get Huth (or Shawcross) for Skrtel this week, bench Ekotto and play him the week after.

don't forget Pienaar. Depends on price, not many strikers that have done the biz up north have come to England and repeated it.
