Leaping like a sixteen stone salmon, Robert Huth is the scourge of 18-yard boxes the length and breadth of the land. Equally terrifying at both ends of the pitch, Huth’s aerial despotism has long ensured that he is as much “on” Stoke’s set-pieces as whoever happens to have the honour of hoofing the ball in his general direction.

The top scoring defender in the Premier League last term, Huth’s six goals were augmented by three assists, eight clean sheets and fourteen bonus points. Amassing 138 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points from a starting price of 5.0,  it was no surprise when he was unhesitatingly elected to our team-of-the-season. With the Potters’ defensive parsimony a proverbial constant, and their attacking prosperity ever predicated on set-plays, a price hike to 6.0 this time round seemed unlikely to present a significant impediment to would-be investors.

Three clean sheets in the first four games seemed to forecast a business-as-usual campaign for Tony Pulis’ men, but with new arrivals Matthew Upson and Jonathan Woodgate now competing for centre-back spots a formerly settled defensive line began to betray an uncharacteristic uncertainty. A long clean sheet drought saw Pulis’ protracted search for a solution assuming the character of a rotational merry-go-round, and Huth often found himself out on a limb at full-back or even, at times, on the bench.

The restoration of last season’s centre-back pairing of Ryan Shawcross and Huth has applied a much needed prophylactic to Stoke’s unusually profligate campaign. The re-galvanised Potters have secured two clean sheets in their last six, and a goal and an assist last weekend in the FA cup saw man-of-the-match Huth back to his imperious best in the opposing penalty area.

Three home games in the next four make Stoke’s upcoming run an inviting proposition (SUN ful SWA NOR), and a January sale price of 5.6 seems eminently reasonable for a player boasting a strong record in both attack and defence. With the threat of rotation hanging ominously over Stoke’s budget defensive options, Shawcross represents the only other safe choice in the Potters’ back line, but priced at 5.1 and offering little competition to Huth in terms of attacking threat, a saving of 0.5 may well be a false economy.

With more attempts on goal in the last six games than the rest of the Potters’ defence combined, and the prospects for clean sheets never remote at the Brittania, Huth may offer the strongest value in the Stoke side over the coming weeks.

I smile when I see people post, "But RVP will be looking to kill it, bar any niggles." No disrespect, El Nino, but wouldn't RVP had been looking to kill it away to Bolton? I realize Arsenal are home this week, so that must be taken into consideration, but since his last double digit score (11 pts; 21 Dec), RVP has gone: 2, 9, 2, 6, 5, and 2. Not earth shattering numbers by any stretch. While his numbers were marginally better than Aguero, Roney, Dzeko or dare I say Sturridge, they pale in comparison to the numbers put up by Sessegnon, Bale or Dempsey. Heck, if one wanted to have really taken a punt, a selection of Raylor over the same period would have yielded better results than RVP.

My point? Unless you are going to captain RVP each and every game, there might be better choices out there to captain. Looking at Fresh Water's Team I would do Sturridge > Ba and (C) Aguero, Ba or RVP depending on where I stand in my mini-league.

Morning Newman! Hardly a winning "streak", just a decent week 😉

Mata's been fairly unlucky with his returns. Looking at the stats, he could fit in one of those sleepers category which Chris Glover mentioned.

Last 6 weeks for mids, Mata has been:
          Top 3 for goal attempts
          #1 for attempted assists/key passes.
Unlucky that Drog/Lamps each stole a penalty from him.

Yeah, but no one on Chelsea can finish, Mata included! Agreed on the penalty, and if theres one thing you can guarantee about Chelsea its that they get penalties, but I think you're reading too much into goal attempts. If goal attempts mattered, Suarez would be must have instead of fantasy garbage.

Mata has shown over this year that he just does not provide for his price. And Chelsea as a team are giving us absolutely nothing to be excited about.

Definitely agree with all those points. Mata has been one of the most underperforming midfielders for his potential in this FPL season.

With the goal attempts, there's no doubting he HAS potential, just like Suarez could have when he returns. Anyways, call it a hunch or a bias from a Chelsea fan, I can see Mata as a big-match player, doing well at home vs Utd & Bolton. It's a choice between Kun & Mata at the moment.

Wigan are bottom of the table. They will never have juicy fixtures unless they're against a Div 3 side. Even a Div 2 side could beat them!

Moses? Way too inconsistent man. Keeps scoring from the bench. I've kept him for 23 weeks and he hasn't given me more than 2-3 points when featured in my starting 11.

    Who to bench:

Fletcher or Sinclair? It seems obvious if you look at their respective away and home form and their fixtures that I should play Fletcher after reading someone's post just now, but I'm not entirely sure. :p

    C. Clark or Evans? Clark has the better fixture arguably but there's a risk of rotation IMO with him coming off early last game, and Evans is playing an out of form Chelsea team - I have Evans starting at the moment but I had Clark starting until I changed my team about recently.

I'm just posting this as I'd like more food for thought. 🙂

Hmm, but Walters is on pens, oop, normally v strong at home, and has SUN, ful SWA, NOR in the next 4, after which I'd wildcard again and boot him out. Siggs only has 1 decent home game in the next 4.

nobody can predict the future, not even tony pulis. ive found its better to focus on the facts. e.g. "walters has recently also been employed on the right wing". his FPL form has also dropped slightly.

if you could get Sess + Siggy it would be perfect though, but McClean, as it stand now, provides silly value

I thought they'd play upfront together in a 4-4-2 like against Avl.

Cisse looks like the one to have more gametime for sure. QPR need him for his runs/pace throughout. Helguson & BZ should be used interchangeably as the target man for the team.

Any thoughts on this WC team, fellas? Much appreciated.

    Krul (Mignolet)
Richards | Komp | Simpson (Evans | Kelly)
Silva | Mata | Bale | McClean (Dempsey)
    RVP | Ba | Cisse
    Bank = 0.3

Undecided between BZ/Dj Cisse. Would love to hear your thoughts too!

stick with cisse for now. team looks good. Id start dempsey over mcclean looking back dempsey performs well against top4/5.

Like the double city coverage, but would be worried about aguero banging in 2 or 3 the next couple home fixtures.

Yeah I'm torn there. Since I have 2 City defenders, I'd rather Dempsey on the bench as I see Mancini trying to remain disciplined at the back & Fulham shutting shop against City.

Frankly, if there's one man I'm worried not having. That's Kun, obviously. But just think City aren't the same as the start of season, where they used to score for fun. Also, Kun isn't in the best of form. A goal could come from anywhere in the front 4. Silva is just as likely to score with Mancini's set-up.

        Cheers for your input.

I'd like to see some form in him before I get another expensive striker. Maybe I could keep a watch on Kun over these 2 weeks and if he shows any sign of form, I could get him in for the 2 delicious home games.

Verm/Kosc for one week sounds good but doubt Bos are nailed-on.

Bos has been lucky with all the injuries around him. Cahill will never get to the first 11 for a while methinks, barring injuries.

I honestly think double City is very decent. Aguero is just making me angry at this point. If I was wildcarding this week, I'd do it. City isn't showing much going forward, espeically Aguero. Ice cold right now. I think the league figured him out.

I also love Valencia, and think he is better then Sess for the next several weeks.
Then again, Sess is KILLING me, so maybe I just want to be right about him.

Love the keepers: wish I had it. Too much work to change it now. Stupid Lindegaard injury. Stupid sunderland not sucking anymore.

Cheers Newman. I think Valencia's honeymoon period may have ended. We'll have to wait and see, ofcourse.

              Which team do you prefer?

              Krul (Mignolet)
Taiwo | Komp | Simpson (Evans | Kelly)
              Silva | Sigurdson/Moses | Bale | Sess (Dempsey)
              RVP | Ba | Kun

Richards | Komp | Simpson (Evans | Kelly)

Jeez, its so close, buddy. I hate Mata so much, that alone makes me like the first one. I obviously like Aguero too, so I think I'd lean towards that.

I personally feel you are missing a couple of key players there. Kun Aguero might rip the likes of Bolton and Blackburn to shreds.I am looking at a potential loss of some very good 40 points in the next four games or so.

    Hey Everyone,

This is my first year seriously following the EPL. During the January Transfer window, what historically has been the trend,

    1. It takes a few weeks for the transferred IN player to gel with the team and EPL style
    2. Quality players jump in right away and contribute from the their first match?

It all depends, some players come straight into the EPL and hit the ground running, some players need a few months

Obviously it's always difficult for anyone to embrace change instantly.Generally all the Footballers often need some time to get acclimatized to the weather and the general ethos of their newly inherited club.

it is close between caulker vs BAE.

Pool at home looks like they are scoring again Suarez back Carrol finally on a bit of form. But BAE more likley for attacking points.

SWA away and they are conceeding. But WBA could lay an egg.

          Tough call.

What do you guys think is the better keeper/defenders combination:

    a) Al Habsi, Huth, A Ferdinand with no money in the bank
    b) Sorenson, Evans, Taiwo + $1.1 in the bank

I can also do Sorenson, Huth, Taiwo with no money in the bank but don't really want to double up on Stoke defence

My other keeper/defenders are Vorm, Simpson and Senderos

I already have Sorensen of Stoke as my secondary GK; will play Krul most weeks tho; Stoke have about 4 favourable upcoming games, but after that a tough schedule in mid to late March

the options I was most actively considering were Senderos (Fulham) or Clark (Aston Villa); thoughts on those choices?

also, should I keep Simpson in my squad, effectively doubling down on Newcastle (Krul and Simpson)?

But surely !artonez would have sold him if he wasn't a major part of his plans going forward as I think he cam leave on a free at the end of the season. I fancy bringing him in to my doomed third striker slot- previous occupants Yakubu (the week he got sent off) and Helgusson (missed a penalty then injured himself)
