Leaping like a sixteen stone salmon, Robert Huth is the scourge of 18-yard boxes the length and breadth of the land. Equally terrifying at both ends of the pitch, Huth’s aerial despotism has long ensured that he is as much “on” Stoke’s set-pieces as whoever happens to have the honour of hoofing the ball in his general direction.

The top scoring defender in the Premier League last term, Huth’s six goals were augmented by three assists, eight clean sheets and fourteen bonus points. Amassing 138 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points from a starting price of 5.0,  it was no surprise when he was unhesitatingly elected to our team-of-the-season. With the Potters’ defensive parsimony a proverbial constant, and their attacking prosperity ever predicated on set-plays, a price hike to 6.0 this time round seemed unlikely to present a significant impediment to would-be investors.

Three clean sheets in the first four games seemed to forecast a business-as-usual campaign for Tony Pulis’ men, but with new arrivals Matthew Upson and Jonathan Woodgate now competing for centre-back spots a formerly settled defensive line began to betray an uncharacteristic uncertainty. A long clean sheet drought saw Pulis’ protracted search for a solution assuming the character of a rotational merry-go-round, and Huth often found himself out on a limb at full-back or even, at times, on the bench.

The restoration of last season’s centre-back pairing of Ryan Shawcross and Huth has applied a much needed prophylactic to Stoke’s unusually profligate campaign. The re-galvanised Potters have secured two clean sheets in their last six, and a goal and an assist last weekend in the FA cup saw man-of-the-match Huth back to his imperious best in the opposing penalty area.

Three home games in the next four make Stoke’s upcoming run an inviting proposition (SUN ful SWA NOR), and a January sale price of 5.6 seems eminently reasonable for a player boasting a strong record in both attack and defence. With the threat of rotation hanging ominously over Stoke’s budget defensive options, Shawcross represents the only other safe choice in the Potters’ back line, but priced at 5.1 and offering little competition to Huth in terms of attacking threat, a saving of 0.5 may well be a false economy.

With more attempts on goal in the last six games than the rest of the Potters’ defence combined, and the prospects for clean sheets never remote at the Brittania, Huth may offer the strongest value in the Stoke side over the coming weeks.

Two questions here, who to go with for the starting 11

Def: Evans (che) or Shotton (SUN)

Mid: Dempsey (mci) or Ba (AVL)

So far I am going with Ba and Evans

Bottom page repost, for you Jafalad,

Are you only mad at me because I made fun of Ade? You have to admit, your devotion extends pretty far, considering his form. You captained him when he was ice cold. Now, not even the fixtures support him.

I’m sorry if I’m getting too smart. You kicked my butt this week, if it makes you feel better. Then again, everyone did.

Yeah, I think this loss is the beginning of my downfall. This week just sucks so bad: all of my theories blowing up in my face simultaneously. Just everything bad that could happen this week did.

I had no idea he was so crazy mad at me. Is it just the Jafa thing, or telling you to wildcard early, or what?

You boast such an AWESOME rank that you could afford this week. And think about it - not as if you got below avg score. 50+ on any week is an average one.

It's too bad that Jafa is aiming for banter when we keep missing each other online. Everytime I start talking, he leaves.

Eh, the rank isn't looking so impressive now. Last week, sure, but now.....meh, good, not great. I know 50+ is good on most weeks. I take some comfort in that literally just about EVERYTHING that could go wrong did this week, so there is that.

It's just weeks like this that make you wonder if its worth all the time you devote. Sigh.

And kaboul! Don't forget Kaboul. He has been epic lately.

But yeah, if we have no VDV, Ade, or Lennon this week, I wonder how much we can really score about pool.

            O yeah........Saha!

Then again, if we play Defoe/Saha alone up front, we'll have 3 in central mid, and the Parker/Modric/Sandro midfield will make it impossible for pool to score. Even if they get through those three, congrats, you have Kaboul and Dawson/King behind.

0-0 written all over it, methinks.

    Advice needed:

    Krul Bogdon
    Richards, Huth, Clark, Kelly Caulker
    Silva, Dempsey, Bale, Sess, Walters
    Kun, Bent, Adebayor

Pretty set on waiting 2 weeks on Ba. Therefore, I’m puzzled over my front line – who to swap Adebayor with:

    Kun, Bent + Zamora

    or

Kun, Bent + Dzeko (of course, Richards would need to go in this case)

So this week was awful. I won't bore you with whining about all of the reasons it sucked for me. (I think I came up with seven ridiculous things that screwed me over this week) I will say that I may never bench simpson again, ever.

But 'they' say after a bad week, the natural thing to do is knee jerk. I kinda did already getting Ba in for Studge. Should I take a hit for anyone? Sess in for someone? I kinda like Valencia to outscore him the next few weeks, but maybe I'm just stubborn.

    Vorm Lindy
    Kompany Enrique Caulker Senderos Simpson
    Silva Bale Dempsey Valencia Dyer
    Kun RVP Ba

    0.4 in bank.

Should I do a random points hit for something?

Very solid team. With the run of fixtures, Valencia, Dyer, Dempsey and Enrique may be considered. Sess (as well as a defender from Stoke) may add value, IMO.

I actually just shipped Huth. They have a TON of extra games these next few weeks, and way too many defenders to avoid rotation. O yeah....and they are playing like shit, too. Not at all tempted by Stoke.

Sess is a different story. The only reason he isn't in my team is pride. (Well, fixtures mostly, but yeah, pride) I seriously think all 4 midfielders will outscore him the next 4-9 weeks. The only option would be downsizing Kun and getting a fifth mid, but I don't really love that either.

Been looking at taking out BAE for Evans, so compared their fixtures

BAE: liv NEW ars UTD eve STO che SWA
Eva: che LIV nor tot WBA wol FUL bla

with my other defenders being Taiwo, Santon, Caulker and Kompany, I cant really see Evans improving my team.

this is who I would play given I could chose between BAE and Evans every GW
    gw25: Komp, Caulk, BAE
    gw26: Komp, Santon, Taiwo
    gw27: Komp, Taiwo, Sant/Caulk
    gw28: Komp, Taiwo, EVANS
    gw29: BAE, Santon, Komp
    gw30: Caulk, Santon, EVANS
    gw31: BAE, Komp, Santon
    gw32: EVANS, Caulk, Santon

So over the next 8 game weeks with my current defence, I would like to play BAE 3 times, and Evans 3 times.

So does it make sense getting in Evans you think?

might be too early for me but i find this a bit confusing. you look like you want to use santon most weeks, how about simpson instead of evans and double up? or do you have ba and krul and no more room for toons?

        I am considering doing Lindegaard/BAE ➡ Krul/Evans

This is a BAE v Evans comparison based on my current defence (Kompany, BAE, Taiwo, Santon, Caulker).

But I think it shows taking out BAE for Evans does not improve my defence, it remains about the same. I would pick BAE for 3/8 and Evans for 3/8 of the next game weeks.

Yep, seeing his FPL start history persuaded me to bring him in as a short punt to tide me over until the Ol'Bamachine got into gear. Unfortunately he didn't play against Stoke as SAF went Chico-Berba. Do you think that's just his strike pairing for flat track bullies, and if Rooney is fit it'll be Rooney and Welbeck?

Do you also think Welbeck can't start in the absence of Rooney?

dont like sorensen, enrique, sinclair, sturridge. not in general, just if you are WCing right now.

Stoke arent keeping the CS they should be and he is still at risk to begovic right now, still needs a couple solid games to feel like he's nailed on as their #1

Enrique has tough fixtures and a blank to contend with. Even if you lose some cash on him, its worth getting rid IMO, and his price will have to drop between now and then, so buying back bakc may not be as terrible as it looks now.

sinclair is really dependent on home hauls. with only 2 home games in the next 6, one of them being city, i think it best to wait on him.

sturridge will stil have value this season, just cant back him right now when there are some great options cheaper, Ba, zamora, D cisse.

Following the match by text it seemed to me Blackburn were getting tons of chances and the Toon defence was in peril - they should have let in a few. My take is that HBA went off because he has no defensive qualities and Blackburn are an attacking team, playing away to them is a defensive nightmare. Home to Villa on the other hand looks like a match cut out for HBA tbh - they'll be attacking Villa I'm confident. Obertan I've watched this year, somewhat limited player.

HBS isn't nailed on yet but for this match I'd have him.

I agree on both. I actually got rid of Barfa in my WC because I didn't see him nailed on in the long term with the team reshuffling to accommodate Ba and Tiote. If you have him though yes, take what you can now!

He's paid off since I got him and I expect to see him start for as long as Cabaye is benched, maybe even until Tiote gets back.

Villa's just the sort of defence he likes to terrorise & I even fancy him doing well against Spurs.

                But then I'm a glass-half-full sorta guy...

Leaning to D.Cisse now as better fixture and also doubt if Ba will return with his goalscoring form.

i love landon donovan, but i can think of 50 mids that would be a better transfer in right now.

Bad fixtures, little attacking output, though to be fair, perhaps jelavic will aide in that department. But then you have donovans loan expiring. Just not a good idea.

so you need a CS to break even + attacking points to profit. Not out of the realm, but in the long run, or as soon as cabaye is back, could have a problem. I think i refrain there. I know you'd like to see a better back line though.

i like it better than raylor as a 4 week contract. I wouldn't if you have sess or mcclean and are playing him though. starting sess and bringing huth in for a hit is madness.

Played a 5v5 match in the freezing cold yesterday. Bloody hell I am way short of match fitness! Lasted 30 mins running in a 60 min game, then became very slow. Perked up towards the end and scored. Many moments I was thinking "I hope it's almost over, I can't go on..."

How do you accelerate your match fitness? I'm starting to go for early morning jogs with periods of running... good idea?

    mornin' all,

currently got this lot lined up this week:

    Krul
    Williamson, McAuley, Richards
    Sess, Dempsey, Valencia, Bale
    RvP, Fletch, Aguero

    Mignolet, HBA, JEvans, BAE

was looking at HBA + Aguero > Silva + Ba but coming up 0.1 short right now and Ba will probably continue to rise.

    any other obvious options?

if you fancy a richards CS, get brave and bench dempsey for HBA.

First off, isnt there some protection time for Ba when his flag is removed? Im not 100% sure but i thought thats how it worked.

keep the faith with aguero. he's still class, city will find their feet over these fixtures and he will score.
