With last night’s tepid affair at Anfield bringing the gameweek to a close, we can now turn our attentions to the regular round-up. We take a look at Arsenal’s newest wing sensation, Swansea’s increased attacking potential and the dilemma surrounding Newcastle’s Senegalese front men…

The Player

While Gervinho lends his weight to Ivory Coast’s bid for the African Cup of Nations, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has dazzled on the Arsenal left. A double from the 5.8 priced midfielder in last Saturday’s 7-1 drubbing of Blackburn confirmed his potential as a mid-price Fantasy asset and suggests he will have a part to play in the second half of the season, as Arsene Wenger leads his side in the chase for fourth spot.

Handed his first start of the campaign in gameweek 22, the youngster had hinted at his attacking threat by providing an assist in the 2-1 home defeat by Man United and backed this up further against Steve Kean’s strugglers. Given that Theo Walcott has scored 3 all season, with Gervinho notching 4, Oxlade-Chamberlain’s eye for goal looks an intriguing prospect for Fantasy managers. Many agree, with 60,000 already drafting him in since his Emirates performance.

Wenger admitted only yesterday, however, that he is wary of over-using the winger and, with Gervinho back in time for the gameweek 26 clash against Spurs, it may well be that the Arsenal boss decides to rotate his wide men in order to prevent burn-out on the youngster’s behalf. This could mean less starts for both Gervinho and Walcott, as Wenger looks to afford Oxlade-Chamberlain Premier League experience.

With Gervinho priced at 8.9 and classified as a forward, and Walcott an 8.8 midfielder, Oxlade-Chamberlain would certainly offer a far cheaper alternative for Fantasy managers; with rotation highly likely, though, Wenger’s tinkering could yet make him a frustrating acquisition over the upcoming months, in spite of his obvious potential.

The Team

In the first half of Swansea’s campaign, it was all about the defensive assets. With six clean sheets in their first eight games at the Liberty Stadium, the back-four and Michel Vorm proved exceptional value, with the Dutchman’s extra save points and penalty heroics seeing his price rocket. The Welsh club’s dire away form -just three points gained in their first seven- made their Fantasy options easy to bench whenever they took to the road.

The last few gameweeks have seen a turnaround in fortunes, however. Swansea have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last four at the Liberty Stadium, with Vorm and company becoming less of a home banker as the season unfolds. On the road, in comparison, two wins in the last three suggest Brendan Rodgers’ tactics are gradually beginning to bear fruit away from home, too.

Gylfi Sigurdsson, in particular, is showing a real consistency of performance that belies his 5.0 price tag. The on loan star has produced attacking returns in three of his four appearances, averaging 6.25 per game so far. With set-pieces also factored in, the Icelandic midfielder is flourishing under former boss Rodgers and also seems to be bringing the best out in Danny Graham.

Since stepping onto the pitch as a sub in the 3-2 win over Arsenal, Sigurdsson has provided 3 assists for the Swans- Graham has benefitted twice, netting winners against the Gunners and, last week, West Brom at the Hawthorns. Priced at 4.8, and playing in a side with just one defeat in their last seven, Graham is clearly capable at this level, having netted 8 times already this term and, while the back-line has seen a reduction in returns, he continues to offer Fantasy managers a strong consistency up front, home or away.

The Talking Point

An injury to Leon Best at the Sports Direct Arena on Sunday gave Fantasy managers plenty to consider. On came Papiss Demba Cisse for his Premier League debut and the former Freiburg man lived up to the hype, firing home a brilliant winner to seal the three points for Newcastle. With Demba Ba netting upon his return from international duty, it’s clear we have something of a Fantasy quandary on our hands.

With 16 goals to his name and a Fantasy haul of 137 points –just two less than Sergio Aguero- Ba has been a mid-price phenomenon this term. Priced at 7.7, he’s already risen by 0.4 since his return from the African Cup of Nations and nearly 90,000 Fantasy managers have drafted him in since the Villa match. His proven track record in the Premier League, in addition to spot-kick duties, is currently making Ba the overwhelming Fantasy managers’ favourite of the Newcastle front pair.

Priced at 7.0, and owned by just 0.5% of Fantasy managers, Cisse seems a real eye-catching differential, though. He will play more advanced than Ba in the front two, sitting on the shoulder of the last defender while his compatriot drops slightly deeper and gets more involved in the play. Cisse’s eye for goal and willingness to fire off attempts suggests he is likely to have more efforts than Ba and, while this could perhaps produce some explosive returns, it could also work against him in terms of bonus. A few wayward shots, as we saw on Sunday, when combined with Ba’s defensive work, saw Cisse fail to pick up any bonus, while Ba walked away with the maximum allocation.

There’s no reason to believe Cisse’s arrival will be detrimental to Ba. If anything, Cisse’s finishing could help boost Ba’s assist tally- he currently has just 4 but, playing alongside a goalscorer of such repute will surely increase his chances. Ba will still get his opportunities, as we witnessed on Sunday, and providing he remains as clinical, should continue to hit the net with regularity.

Best’s injury certainly lessens the competition for places up front at Newcastle and will allow the pair to strike up an understanding at club level over the next few matches. With Wolves, Sunderland and Norwich rolling up to Tyneside in the next five gameweeks, Ba and Cisse seem set for an intriguing shoot-out which, given their respective abilities, could prove equally beneficial to both.

Thinking of doing Walters and Morison to Moses and Ba for free. Is there any reason for me not to do this?

I don't have Sess, I have McLean and I'm starting him this week (though that is as much of out necessity as anything else. The MON effect is in full swing. Arsenal struggled to break down Bolton away, Sunderland are a much tougher nut to crack, especially at home, as City found out.

I think I've tied up my team nicely. Can't see any weaknesses, but I'll put it out there for burning anyway:

    Vorm [Mignolet]
Kelly - Evans - Cahill [Enrique, Simpson]
Bale - Dempsey - Silva - McClean [Valencia]
    Aguero - RVP - Ba

Thinking of taking out Valencia and bringing in Sigurdsson, I've noticed people saying Swansea have bad fixtures Nor, Stoke (minus Huth) & Wig all look good to me, then I'll have the option to swap him for another budget midfielder (enough choice out there) I'm worried about Valencia due to Young returning and him getting moved to rb time to time.

    good move?

Just got back and in the meantime I've still been thinking about cheap strikers as per the previous page. This gameweek highlighted the following rules:

    - The motto "punt on your team, not your captain" has never been more true

    - Uber cheap defences are not worth it. It's better to sacrifice an Aguero to a cheaper short term striker in order to afford defenders from the likes of Pool, City, Spurs and keep them for the long term through the tough fixtures rather than relying on the likes of Fulham and Stoke. Aside from Newcastle, Swansea and perhaps Sunderland, there aren't any cheap cleanies to be had.

My expensive defence is a flop corrigan. I also realise far more chance of attackers get bonuses with this system. Whereas a defender has to play in a 0-0 if he does not get assists.
I learnt my lesson, but I am going to persevere until gw 28. Then 2nd Wildcard time to undo the damage of the winter one!

Just looked. Your defence is waaaaay too expensive in proportion to what I'm suggesting. Baines and Jones are definitely not worth it and you probably want to swap Skrtel for Richards.

I'm basically seeking the balance of the force. A Pool, City, Spurs and then two from Caulker Jevans and Simpson would be the way I'd go.

Oh that defence has changed with the gw 24 wildcard..
It is now Richards, Kompany Vermaelen (simpson, Taiwo)
Vermaelen will probably be changed to a chelsea defender..price not an issue.

Fulham and Stoke have been the main disappointments, but the fact Newcastle, Sunderland and to a lesser extent Swansea are producing cheap CS means cheap defences are still better value than expensive ones. I got City and United coverage (Richards and Evans) who have close to the top two CS positions in the league - these are my first two defenders most weeks (benched Evans this week) and the other three slots are cheapies.

I agree, but I'd still invest in the likes of Enrique and BAE alongside Richards and JEvans when cheap as they are reliable sources of CSs and cost little more than the unreliable ubers.

Yeah I made a call which I may regret which was to lose BAE in the WC as I didn't see Spurs continuing to deliver CS over the fixtures. Seem much more solid this year though. I'm going to have to get a LIV/TOT def for sure when the fixtures improve. It's just the famous five and Ba that make penny pinching important.

I'm not unhappy with my 'cheap' defence which has a Spurs,City,United and Newcastle defender(4 of the top 5 teams). I made a mistake not captaining RVP and so I think this is still crucial to get the choice right.

I like Aguero's fixtures and I'm sure when averaged out over 5/6 gameweeks he will be one of the top scoreres-have faith!

Tony V has played 90 minutes for 15 straight weeks if you count Liverpool, and 79 the week before that run, he will play 90 minutes twice for Ecuador in internationals. I think he might be getting tired, and with Young, Nani and Park (and maybe Giggs) available Fergie will certainly rotate his wingers.

As for Young, he was impressive at the start of the season, then got injured, came back, never got up to full speed and then injured again. Remember on his first start after injury Valencia did very little. Young needs to be given the chance to get going again.

Who would you rather have over the next few fixtures, i am chasing a lead:

Sessegnon (ARS, wba, new) - Have him already, most in my mini league have him, great form. Would play him 2/3

Taarabt (bla, FUL, EVE) - good fixtures, differential. Would play him 3/3

You are 8 points ahead of me and about 8000 ahead-incredible how close the gap is at this level.

Anyone considering Yakubu. Blackburn have easy fixtures coming up.

I think a Ba, Yak, RVP forward line could work well

Anyone getting Moses instead of Sigurdsson for the next 5 weeks.

Moses- bol, AVL, SWA, nor, WBA,
Siggy- NOR, sto, wig, MCI, ful

0 tough fixtures for Moses and he is still OOP.

I don't like Moses, he's played every game this season and scored 2+ only 4 times. Sigurdsson has played 4 games and scored points in 3 of them.

He's good at running, quite good at skinning people, has a decent enough shot and can get to the by-line and cut it back pretty well. He just doesn't have the footballing brain to know the right time to do each of those things...

Walcott, worse fixtures and scores fewer points, plus Gervinho returning meaning 2 will play each week from Gervinho, Ox, Walcott

Do we have to actually discuss it? In any case, it's unethical, impractical and improbable to have Walcott in the first place.

Tommy J, with the exception of Taiwo, I like your cheap defence (nice balance, not Uber cheap). Personally, I think it is worth upgrading Taiwo to a Pool or another City as I'd think it would pay off in the long run. Cleanies are so hard to find. I can get Kun's similar output elsewhere by hopskotching on the cheap strikers with form and fix.

You need a fair bit of luck for the hopscotching method to work, otherwise you'll end up with grazed knees.
