With Mark somewhat out of the picture this week due to the birth of his son, William, the Scout Selection Committee was one man light. Nevertheless, the rest of us have gathered our thoughts and bring you our chosen XI ahead of Gameweek 25. Here’s who we have…

Mark Schwarzer takes his place between the sticks ahead of Fulham’s home clash against Stoke. With just one defeat in their last six at the Cottage, Martin Jol’s side look strong favourites for this one and with the Potters finding the net in just one of their last four on the road, a clean sheet for the London outfit could well be on the cards.

While Swansea’s potential for a clean sheet at home to Norwich is a definite possibility, Brendan Rodgers’ side have, nevertheless conceded in each of their last four home games. With this in mind, we’ve opted for the most attack-minded option in their defence and welcome Angel Rangel to the picks. The right-back has returned 3 assists this term so far, 2 more than the rest of the Swans’ back-four combined.

Micah Richards should offer potential at both ends of the pitch on Sunday’s visit to Villa. While City have struggled for goals on the road of late –netting once in their last four away games- the back-line has benefitted, grabbing a couple of clean sheets in comparison. With 6 assists to his name already, Richards’ threat going forward will trouble a home side that have picked up just 2 points from their last six at Villa Park.

Our final defender is Benoit Assou-Ekotto. The Spurs left-back has averaged 5.25 points per game at White Hart Lane, in addition to returning 6 clean sheets in front of his home fans this term. Granted, he is up against Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse, but his recent attacking returns – a goal and 3 assists in his last seven- suggest that, even if Spurs do concede, he stands a good chance of producing at the other end of the pitch.

The top-scoring midfielder in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) so far, Gareth Bale is a nailed-on pick this weekend. Since hitting his stride in Gameweek 10, the Welshman has returned double figures in four of his last eight games as the Lane and has failed to produce attacking points in just one of those fixtures. With Yohan Cabaye and Cheik Tiote still unavailable, he could be set to run riot against the Magpies on Saturday evening.

He may have had a tiring FA Cup replay on Wednesday, but we cannot overlook the form of Stephane Sessegnon. The Benin international limped off towards the end of Sunderland’s win over ‘Boro but there was no mention of any injury issue from Martin O’Neill today, suggesting Sessegnon’s problem was, indeed, no more than cramp. Sessegnon has been instrumental in the Black Cats’ rise up the rankings, with attacking returns in seven of his last eight games, and with an average of 7.8 points per game from Gameweek 17 onwards, is too vital for O’Neill to rest, in spite of his midweek exertions.

Current leader of the Captain Poll, Clint Dempsey is another automatic starter this weekend. The Fulham midfielder has been flourishing in a more advanced role over the last few games, scoring 4 goals in his last couple of home starts. With Stoke toiling on the road over the last few matches, the US international will be looking to extend a record that has seen him net in four of his last six appearances at the Cottage.

Subject of our recent Talent article for members, Gylfi Sigurdsson makes his Scout Picks debut after a series of strong performances. The on-loan Icelandic international has provided 3 assists in four appearances, in addition to a goal, and has averaged 6.25 points per game for Brendan Rodgers’ side. Factor in his set-piece duties and a home clash with Norwich looks more than a little appealing.

Sunderland’s record of three back-to-back clean sheets is set to be well and truly tested by Robin Van Persie tomorrow afternoon. The Dutchman has enjoyed a week’s rest after an incredible 23 point haul against Blackburn last Saturday and, with Martin O’Neill’s side playing 120 minutes in their FA Cup replay against Middlesbrough, will be looking to take advantage of any tired legs at the Stadium of Light.

Back from suspension, we turn to Yakubu ahead of Blackburn’s crucial home showdown with QPR. Subject of a Watchlist article earlier in the week, the Nigerian’s contribution over the rest of the season could well be the difference between survival and relegation for Steve Kean’s strugglers. Averaging 5.5 points per game, and with spot-kick duties also in the bag, 12 goals in just 16 appearances is indicative of The Yak’s threat against Mark Hughes’ side.

Steven Fletcher is our final selection with the weekend midlands derby at Molineux in mind. Wolves and West Brom have been defensively dire this season; Mick McCarthy’s side have a single clean sheet at home –back in Gameweek 2- while Roy Hodgson’s men have recorded just one clean sheet on their travels, in Gameweek 4. With both teams looking more than likely to concede, then, Fletcher –as the one form forward on show- seems the best shout to produce on Sunday afternoon.

Allright, this whole captain Bale movement continues to make no sense to me. Why are we acting like Newcastle isn't a good defense all of a sudden? Why are we acting like they have struggled on the road? Other than the fulham and Liverpool games, they have been fine on the road.

Of all the options, why Bale?

And if I captain Aguero, it will be based on the fact that of all the candidates, he is playing the weakest defense. Bale, meanwhile is playing one of the better defenses.

It nevertheless stands that without Kompany, City aren't much of a defense, so its not much of an accomplishment that Bale scored there. He then proceeded to look awful against Liverpool, and badly fluff a good scoring chance.

I know Newcastle is missing players, but with that current back 4, they have done just fine defensively. Certainly better than Villa. Much better.

Bale's home numbers are pretty sideways considering they have only played poor teams at home lately.

With Lennon back, Bale becomes a much more enticing prospect; opposing sides can't just crowd Bale out of the game (like at Liverpool) if they also have to contend with Lennon making runs down the other flank.

And Newcastle without Tiote, Cabaye and the Taylors is a weakened defence.

We could debate the point on Raylor, but that doesn't lessen the point I made about Newcastle being a weakened defence without the other missing players.

Not saying they're a weak defence mind you, just saying they are weakened.

So weak that you would captain against them? They aren't THAT weakened. Guthrie is fine centrally, and that back four has been very good, even with the loss of Saylor.

Definitely thinking about it, but whether I end up going with Bale I don't yet know.

The problem is that you can construct negative arguments against any of the potential captaincy options this week. The argument against Bale just happens to be Newcastle's defence, but name your other options and I'm sure we could both make an argument why it's not a good option.

Only hindsight will tell you which of those arguments were valid and which were a load of bunkum.

Good luck with whatever you decide, not that you need it judging from your rank.

Newcastle have been notoriously poor on their travels to London in previous seasons. A 0-0 at Loftus Road and a 5-2 defeat @ Fulham this season is not conclusive but they tend not to shine in the capital. Spurs are not invincible but they are the one of the most attacking sides in the league especially at WHL and I can see the front line giving Newcastle plenty problems.

0-0 is still a cleansheet. I mean, QPR were dreaful, but still. I will say with Defoe and Lennon back they will be better offensively. I just think Newcastle is too good at th back, considering the other options.

Liverpool and the Fulham games did happen though it's not like they can be ignored. Bale is the number 2 scorer in FPL this year, and he's playing at home against an inconsistent defense.

      The other options:
Dempsey: I just don't trust Fulham to score enough goals, good option but I wouldn't be shocked if the game was 0-0.
RvP: People are afraid of rest and he's playing a good Sunderland side. Between him and Bale for me.
Aguero: Hasn't done it on the road, City could easily 5 goals and he could be involved in none of them. I like him a lot but no one in my league has him so it's too big a gamble for me.
Rooney: IMO, the best option this week but unfortunately I and most others don't have him.

Well that's my point right there: is Newcastle suddenly an inconsistent defense? Since when?

I agree wholly on Dempsey, and I'm concerned enough about RVP that I have passed on him, too. Aguero has been poor on the road, but he is playing the worst defense of everyone listed here. I, too, do not own Rooney.

Liverpool played their best game of the year, bar none, that week. Fulham was...........yeah, that one was weird, no doubt. A cleanie is a cleanie, even if it is rovers.

I still think they're stats speak for themselves. 4 Road cleanies.

ya i'm not sure if i'm comfortable playing cahill over caulker as i see a 1-1 draw in the chelsea vs everton game.

as far as transfers and cash, i don't have any transfers in mind, and i have 0.1 in bank.

and ya some people have been saying mcclean over valencia.

and thank you for your input!

im an everton fan Flash, we have a good record against chelsea, i wouldnt bet on a cleaan sheet at goodison...personally..even if we cant score at the moment...

Swans at home is a no brainer for me...hope my confidence helps you make the right decision!

Fair do's on trannies and cash.

Regarding McClean, never felt compelled to sign him...i have sess, why would i, and it is arsenal...there not playing a bunch of tramps, if anyone is going to do something for sunderland, id bet on sess, even though iv benched him lol.

I would keep Val in all day....push evans higher up sub list dude 😉

the issue with playing caulker over cahill is that i'm playing vorm, so it's just for spreading out the risk

and i've had mcclean since gw 21 and he has been a great differential for me. but benching valencia over mcclean is something i'll have to think about.but arsenal's defensive abilities are nowhere near solid, and mcclean/sess have been very good lately.

and i think both utd and liverpool will concede, hence evans being 3rd on my bench.

i agree totally with the last comment there, but i have a sneaky feeling utd will shut up shop...iv just had to bring on evans...senderos injured!! devastated.

fair do's on mcclean, but if your a fan of spreading the damage...what if you play both and nothing happens...and what if swansea get clean sheet, you'll regret caulker not being in your squad, the way i see it..they are playing norwich, not a push over, but id put money on a clean sheet, and im not a betting man.

I don't think i want to tell people why I am captaining Dempsey, but I'm gonna copy + paste it from my earlier posts/replies!

      Why captain Demps?Some reasons
He is in very good form.
He is playing as a striker with Ruiz in support behind him. And I think he loves playing with Ruiz in the games I have watched.
Stoke are in very very poor form and without Huth their defence will be weakened.
Last season at Craven Cottage Fulham won 2-0, and Dempsey scored both.
He gets 5 points for each goal rather than 4.
Should also get 1 point for clean sheet.
He has played 90 minutes every match, one exception where he played 84 mins.
From a total of 10 goals and 4 assists this season, 7 goals are at home and all his assists are at home.
+ I saw that TotalFPL has their armband on him 🙂
I hope this made the captain choice a lot easier!

        Reasons to have Bale(C):
His home form is great, his last 7 scores at home have been, 14,11,13,4,9,5,15
Plays for a top team instead of a mid-table team.
10 goals and 7 assists this year.
Newcastle are missing Tiote, Cabaye and Raylor meaning their defence will be exposed to a lot of attack, for example, They lost 5-2 to a mediocre Fulham side.

After this next bad spell, Liverpool end the season with a tasty run of fixtures.
