Peter Odemwingie returns to form to see off Wolves in a one-sided midlands derby. West Brom’s strong away form continues, with James Morrison again impressing. Micah Richards is benched as Roberto Mancini opts for rotation, while City struggle for goals on the road once more, with Sergio Aguero and David Silva failing to produce away from the Etihad again:

Micah Richards
The right-back was a victim of rotation yesterday, as Pablo Zabaleta got the nod for City’s trip to Villa Park. Richards’ attacking prowess has seen him acquire 17% Fantasy owners but it appears that Roberto Mancini’s selection policy will continue to frustrate as City juggle domestic and Europa League duties. The Italian looks likely to alternate his full-backs, then, and, with Kolo Toure now heading back from the African Cup of Nations to challenge Joleon Lescott for a place in the heart of defence, Vincent Kompany is the only member of the City back-four seemingly safe from his manager’s tinkering.

Joleon Lescott
The centre-half grabbed the match-winner at Villa to take his recent tally to 2 goals in the last four gameweeks. Lescott’s eye for goal has seen him grab as many as 8 goals in a single season while at Everton and his attacking displays are proving crucial for the league leaders right now. Given that Sergio Aguero has scored 2 in his last eight, while Edin Dzeko has scored 2 in his last twelve, it’s fair to say that City are struggling for attacking returns. Factor in his clean sheet and Lescott has now overtaken Richards in the FPL standings, now sitting on 90 points, after picking up the maximum bonus.

Sergio Aguero and David Silva
The Argentine continues to frustrate his Fantasy owners on the road. While he managed plenty of efforts in the narrow 1-0 win over Villa, Aguero failed to score for the eighth away match in succession. Compare this to 6 goals in his last seven appearances at the Etihad and his inconsistency is glaringly obvious. For an 11.2 priced player, his inability to deliver away from home is infuriating, though with home clashes with Blackburn and Bolton up next, he looks a strong armband option over the next couple of gameweeks. Rumour abound that Mancini is willing to reconsider Carlos Tevez over the remainder of the season and, with Mario Balotelli now available after suspension, the league leaders have plenty of attacking options to consider over the last 13 gameweeks.

David Silva’s early-season form was strong both at home and on the road, but City’s lack of attacking away returns over the last couple of months have also affected their playmaker. Mancini’s side haven’t scored more than once on the road now since Gameweek 11; Silva has picked up just 2 assists in that subsequent seven-game run.

Peter Odemwingie
Finally, he’s beginning to deliver on the performances served up last season. Up until yesterday, the Nigerian had been a huge disappointment, with just 4 goals to his name in the first 24 gameweeks but bagged a hat-trick at Wolves to serve a reminder of his potential. A Fantasy sensation last time round, with 15 goals and 9 assists, Odemwingie has struggled for form and fitness this term and his displays have even been criticised by Roy Hodgson. West Brom have been resultantly toothless of late, with just 5 goals in the last seven gameweeks prior to yesterday’s win at Molineux but, with Sunderland, Chelsea and United up next, their immediate schedule looks tricky.

Baggies Away Form
It’s as if Roy Hodgson’s side just don’t like playing at the Hawthorns. The Baggies have stuttered and struggled, with 4 goals and a single point in their last six home games but, on the road, their form has been markedly different. West Brom have now won four and drawn two of their last seven away games, suggesting that, against conventional Fantasy thinking, their assets may be best utilised on the road. With trips to United, Everton, City and Liverpool in their next five away, that theory will be tested severely, though.

Liam Ridgewell and Keith Andrews
The new January acquisitions were handed their debuts for the Baggies yesterday. Ridgewell was fielded at left-back by Hodgson, with Nicky Shorey dropping out of the first-team, as Gareth McAuley kept his place at centre-half alongside Jonas Olsson. Andrews, on as a half-time sub for Paul Scharner, caught the eye with a devastating display. The former Blackburn man grabbed a goal and assist in the 5-1 rout and, with Hodgson opting for a five-man midfield, could force his way into his manager’s first-team plans over the next few gameweeks.

James Morrison
The Scot’s recent strong form continued at Wolves yesterday. A couple of assists means he has now produced attacking returns in three of his last four gameweeks- ironically, the only blank was in Gameweek 24, when he was selected for the Scout Picks. A goal and 4 assists since the start of Gameweek 22 is indicative of his form and, priced at 5.3, with a 0.6% ownership, has proven to be a decent mid-price differential over the last few matches.

How does a club like Pompey go into administration and Gretna for example go out of business. What does it take for a club to cease to exist or scrape by under administration?

No one willing to put cash into Gretna to pay debts or keep it going. Pompey keep getting bailouts to see them through to the next season (and therefore revenue) or head above water. Massive financial mismanagement however. The Rangers news is shocking, Scotland PL could be a one team league.......

Pompey should've been liquidated already. We had a warning to get everything in order when we went into administration last time, but what did we do, signed more players on good money. All the while thousands of creditors go unpaid, including charities and many local businesses.

Liquidate the club and sell all the assets to pay ther debts - simple.

We (Ipswich) tried to sign 3 of your players in the transfer window as you probably know. I'm surprised you were able to turn down one of the offers, and the other 2 must be on a very good wage because we couldn't match their demands.

I read you had early parachute payments which'll tide you over for a period though.

I think the players didn't want to leave so they just asked for unrealistic wages. Can't imagine that Henderson, Pearce & Ward are on big money.

Yep, early parachute payments are being given to a few clubs. It will only put off the inevitable though, they may as well just get it over with quickly so they don't rack up even more debts, i.e. wages etc..

often lots of lawyers and stays of execution. Portsmouth has assets as well it can sell or borrow more off.

My team Brighton escaped lots of winding up orders for years through a variety of means...the best was selling out goalkeeper Mark Beeney to Leeds for over a million in the early 90s on the day of the hearing. That kept the taxman at bay for a few years.

Its criminal what Portsmouth have done to their creditors. I certainly wouldn't do business with them.

Deadline day selling to survive is cutting it a bit fine. Not a position any club should have to be in. It always stems from over ambitious, irresponsible business practice.

Brighton's owners asset stripped the club so much that at one point the whole team was about 16 (up against Cardiff or Swansea giants in Div 2 at the time was not pretty) and the ground had been sold to build a toys r us. Ended up ground sharing with Gillingham???!!! then setting up temporary home at an athletics stadium where I used to do my school sports day.

Watching the glorious Amex and the team now is testament that no matter how dark it get there is hope. I hope Rangers and Pompey survive, the creditors are properly compensated and they can both learn to manage a club better. Its a real mess.

Seems like only yesterday I was sharing a beer with Hull fans in Gillingham discussing this. They were going through the same thing at the time.

I remember that too, you have done well to come back from that. We should have sold all our players in Jan and played the youth team. It would save £1m a month on wages & bring in some money.

Rangers talking about having to sell their players and taking a penalty hit which might see them relegated......this is also bad for Celtic. Old Firm crowds are a big source of revenue for both clubs. 'Gers owner has already 'morgaged' off the next four years of season tickets! Their expenditure is £10million more than income and they owe the tax man £42 million........totally fooked

just one week ago I could have made an early transfer from Fletcher to Ba...I resisted, as Ba's fixture wasn't great and I'm not keen on early moves. Now he's gone up 0.4 in that time with another price rise to come. Unbelievable inflation.

Got to pick 2 of the following 3 for the next midfield outting:

Sess (wba), Bale (ARS), Dempsey (qpr)

At the moment I'm considering leaving Bale out.

    Team would be:

    Krul (WOL)

Evans (nor), Luiz (BOL), Richards (BLA)

Valencia (nor), Dempsey (qpr), Sess (wba), Silva (BLA)

Rooney (nor), Ba (WOL), Aguero (BLA)

Bench: Vorm (sto), Bale (ars), Bardsley (wba), Kelly (qpr)

I already transfered RVP->Rooney this week. I was going to do it last week for a 4 pt hit but after Sunderland went to extra time in the cup, I relented. Bah humbug.

Sorry, it's not quite as clear cut as I put, however arsenal-spurs games always have goals in them so I wouldn't want to drop any attacking players. Been a while since bale has gone a few games without a goal/assist to. My plan is to bench dempsey becuase as poor as qpr are, dempsey just doesn't score points away from home.

I've just Noticed that it's Bale (ars) not (ARS) as you put, i'd still go for Bale tho based on spurs current form, i can't see past a spurs victory. Gotta be sess or dempsey, i'd probably leave sess out based on the fact that West Brom are in better form than qpr. I have a similar dilemma except i have McClean instead of sess, im still not sure which one cos ive benched mcClean last 2 GWs to my detriment.

So I'm still thinking of taking a punt on cahill next gw. My thoughts are AVB has to change his defence and with Terry due back, good chance to partner cahill up with someone solid. Plus it's against his old team.

Thoughts or am I trying to flog myself a dead horse?

My issue with this new BP system is that its like trying to get a robot to evaluate a painting.

It doesn't matter how complex the algorithm is, or how much statistical analysis backs up the factors, there is so much nuance/artistry/skill and subjective variables in a game of football that I don't believe you can truly identify the three "best" players in a game by numbers alone

A thirty yard pearler is not the same a a one yard tap in

A perfectly weighted, pin-point through ball is not the same as the ball grazing off a shinpad prior to a goal

A full stretch, finger tip save in the last minute is not the same as an easy catch of a duff cross

It also doesnt reflect effort, committment, motivation of your fellow players

Neither system is going to get it "right" 100% of the time, but I feel the new one is much more susceptible to "error".

I think what highlights the ridiculous of this new system in particular are the situations where BPs cant be awarded until dubious assists have been decided. Can it really be right that a players overall performance and man of the match status depend on a fraction of a second and whether the ball did or did not shave the top of his head?

Having to wait until Tuesday afternoon to have points and positions finalised when there's a monday game is crap too.

I don't think I've done significantly any worse this season under the new system, but I want the old one back, and I really think this site should run a poll towards the end of the season

From last years system and this years system I've advocated a mixed methods approach.
Get somebody to watch the game and pick the 3 best players but then support this players with stats so you don't get Charlie Adam gobbling up 3 every week - and if you do at least justify this gobbling in terms of key passes or passes.

Your misgivings are not misplaced imo. I agree on the limits of the algorithm BUT old system was just a Gerrard / Adam love-in, points-for-the-boys type affair. The less we have of that sort of thing, the better.

      Hear, Hear. I agree 100%

They should have a panel of actual experts at each game to decide the bp's imo. You cant judge the best players in a game by stats and figures.
If they can't decide between 2 players who were equally good in a game then maybe stats such as key passes and touches etc. should come into it to decide who gets the bonus.

I need to transfer out Skrtel for GW 26.
I'm thinking to double up on City defence for GW 26 & 27, with selling Skrtel for Kompany.
I willl then have Richards and Kompany, for the games against (BLA) and (BOL)

Hey guys, might need some help:

    Mign (Vorm)
    Richards BAE Simpson (Kelly Caulker)
    Silva Valencia Bale Moses Dempsey
    RVP Agüero (Fletcher) 0.0 + 2 freebies

Obviously I have no Toon attacking coverage, but the only one worth downgrading that comes to my mind is Richards (but even he could outscore Ba over the next few GWs)

    A. Richards, Fletcher > Santon,Ba
    B. Richards, Fletcher > Evans, Cisse
    C. Fletcher > Yak (+ another 2 freebies for GW27)
    D. Fletcher > Graham (+ another 2 freebies for GW27) -> don't really like his fixtures but he's in form.

    Silva / Bale / Dempsey / Valencia / McClean
    RVP / Aguero / Ba

0.1m in the bank, 2 FTs. I can't see an obvious transfer to make, but I'm a firm believe in not wasting / losing FTs. Maybe Senderos > Kelly to free up some cash? Wished I had gone with that in my WC anyway.

Time for a small FPL vacation.

See you in 10, lads and lasses.

Why does a players get -2 for an own goal??

It makes no sense at all, how was it Sorensen's fault, "that" goal??

I guess because there's a chance they could do it on purpose? I'm up for the inclusion of -1 for giving away the penalty like in the UCL game.

wonder if it will be like mark's theory on strikers getting a bit less ppi for a goal than mids, who also get a bit less ppi than defenders. maybe something along the lines of 7 for a striker assist, 8 for a mid, 9 for a defender

    Hi lads! 😛
I need to transfer out Skrtel for GW 26.
I’m thinking to double up on City defence for GW 26 & 27, with selling Skrtel for Kompany.
I willl then have Richards and Kompany, for the games against (BLA) and (BOL)
I’m not gonna do it yet ofc, but when GW 26 is closing in.

    Good move? 🙂

    Gah, what a sh!t GW.

No goals, no bonus, Dempsey assist negated by a Sorensen OG anyway = tumble spectacularly out of the top 100k.

Prospects should improve next GW, but either way, my post wildcard defence (dammit) is making me weep:

Sorensen - should be ok for the next 2, after which I'm scared
Lindegaard - won't usurp De Gea when he returns IMO,
Enrique - returns have dried up lately,
Senderos - injured til who knows when,
Santon - loss of Tiote and Cabaye seems to have badly affected New defence
Caulker - Swansea defence has dipped
    Evans - well, he's Evans.

I'm going to progressively downgrade a couple of midefield players to re-invest in my defence I think.

Pretty unlikely considering how well he's playing actually! Exerting the talent that Fergie assured us he had last year. FINALLY.

I would expect Jones to rotate with Smalling and Rafael on the right wing from now....gonna be a real battle to seal a 1st team spot there.

Since we've been starting a more consistent team our results have improved. Annoying it took Fergie so long to realise but with injuries etc at the time I guess it was unavoidable.

I'd expect the following for the rest of the season:

          Evra Rio Evans Smalling/Jones/Rafael

Unlikely. Fergie seems to like Evans, and Smalling and Jones often play RB, or Jones plays in midfield. Plus Rio is incredibly injury prone, so Evans looks the most assured starter at the back besides Evra.

Thanks. I agree with you, I think Rafael, Smalling and Jones will fight for the right back slot, or Jones could play in midfield, but he was poor before his injury so I wouldn't be surprised if he was dropped.
