Jonathan Walters grabs a penalty as Stoke see off Crawley Town. ‘Arry rings the changes at Stevenage, with four key players ruled out for Spurs. Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez are amongst the goals as Liverpool hammer Brighton to continue their unbeaten domestic cup run and advance to the Sixth Round:

Jonathan Walters
The Irishman had started up front alongside Peter Crouch in the midweek Europa League clash with Valencia but was shifted back into midfield against Crawley yesterday. Walters’ out-of-position status is becoming increasingly reduced as the weeks go by- a clear worry for his 12% Fantasy owners ahead of the upcoming home games with Swansea and Norwich.

With Tony Pulis ringing the changes after Thursday’s 1-0 defeat, Cameron Jerome partnered Crouch up top once again, as Walters was shuffled out to the wing. Despite missing his last spot-kick against West Brom in Gameweek 22, Walters –who has dropped from 6.7 to 6.5 in recent weeks, was still handed penalty duties yesterday, slotting home the opener in the Potters’ 2-0 win.

Peter Crouch
The former Spurs man grabbed Stoke’s second, heading home just after the break to help secure victory. The afore-mentioned home games will perhaps see Fantasy investment in Pulis’ squad and, with Crouch the only real guarantee up front right now, his goal will have turned a few heads. A look at his performances at the Britannia highlights the fact that Crouch has been far from prolific in front of his own fans, though; he has found the net in just two home games this season, with his last coming against Blackburn in Gameweek 13.

Harry Goes 3-5-2
After their 5-0 win over Newcastle, Spurs came back down to earth with a bang yesterday, as Stevenage held Harry Redknapp’s visitors to a goalless draw. The Tottenham boss opted for a 3-5-2 formation, handing Ryan Nelsen his first start for the London outfit, while Louis Saha kept his place up front, with Jermain Defoe coming into the first XI.

Redknapp fielded a much-changed lineup but, despite the likes of Gareth Bale, Scott Parker and Kyle Walker all featuring, the away side were hugely disappointing. Bale was granted a role “in the hole”, tucking in behind the front pair before Redknapp switch to a 4-4-2 on the hour mark, but Spurs rarely threatened, with just five efforts on target all match. A replay date of Wednesday March 7 at the Lane now provisionally penciled in.

Spurs Injury Worries
Post-match, Redknapp outlined the reasons for his host of first-team alterations. Ahead of next Sunday’s north London derby with Arsenal, the Spurs boss gave Fantasy managers plenty to ponder, after revealing he has concerns over four key players. Benoit Assou-Ekotto had a minor groin operation on Monday and is a doubt, Emmanuel Adebayor twisted his knee in training and missed out, Luka Modric is suffering from flu, while Rafael Van der Vaart is still recovering from a calf problem.

The absence of Assou-Ekotto is not only a worry for his 24% Fantasy owners, it may possibly have a knock-on effect on Gareth Bale. The Welshman would be the natural replacement at left-back in Assou-Ekotto’s possible absence, though given his attacking output this term, Redknapp would be more inclined to keep Bale further up the pitch for the Arsenal game, given the Gunners’ current frailties at the back.

Martin Skrtel
The centre-half underlined his increased goal threat by grabbing the opener against the Seagulls. Skrtel headed the Reds on their way within five minutes and has now bagged three goals this term; his highest haul since joining up at Anfield four seasons ago. The Slovakian is Liverpool’s top-scoring FPL defender so far, with 95 points, and with an upturn in fixtures from Gameweek 29 onwards, Skrtel’s 6% ownership –compared to Jose Enrique’s 32%, for example- could prove a handy differential in the final quarter. Elsewhere in defence, Jamie Carragher came in alongside Skrtel in the heart of the back-four, with injury ruling out Daniel Agger.

Luis Suarez
An assist for an own goal, a missed penalty and a late goal in the 6-1 rout completed an eventful day for the Uruguayan. With Craig Bellamy ruled out due to injury, Suarez started alongside Andy Carroll and Steven Gerrard for the very first time and the Merseysiders looked lethal going forward. Granted, Brighton hardly helped their own cause with three own goals but the fact that this was Liverpool’s biggest win since Dalglish returned to the club last season perhaps bodes well for the attacking assets over the remainder of the campaign.

Suarez won’t be head of the queue for penalties, though. Dalglish revealed after the game that he “let sentiment get in the way” when he asked the regular spot-kick takers to step aside for the Uruguayan in the 80th minute. The likes of Charlie Adam and Dirk Kuyt were both on the pitch when Suarez saw his spot-kick saved by Peter Brezovan but with Dalglish going on to concede “I’ll learn my lesson”, Suarez looks likely to once again remain further back in the pecking order.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Moses - its silly to have players on the bench who you'll kick yourself for not playing when they score big. My theory is have 2 cheap mids that you can rotate... gives you more money elsewhere, could even get a keeper like Friedel for the rest of the season for eg...

With cheap mids, I'm looking at difficulty of fixtures rather than h/a. How many home games has Moses done well anyways? Also, since Sachmo already has Sir James, makes sense to get Davies rather than use 2 FTs 🙂

I think that both Arsenal and Chelsea's decline has been a long time coming.

Arsenal have failed miserably replacing quality players that have left for bigger things and have replaced them with very sub-standard players. I could name 5-7 players that need to leave. Unfortunately for them Wenger is too stubborn to change his transfer policies, at times it's admirable that he's trying to run the club economically sound....but at the very least he should level with the supporters rather than getting their hopes up for silver wear.

Chelsea have had a decay from within the ranks for a number of years, undermining every manager that has come to the bridge since "the special one". Clear out the old brigade and start fresh.

Both clubs need a revolution IMO.

As for Tottenham....well arry is a genius. Check out all the players he's bought and for how much, unbelievable value. He has arguably got the best midfeild unit in England! They are 1-2 players away from taking the league IMO!

Spot on, if we exclude the last paragraph which I'm still unsure about.

Overall though I think this is possibly the most exciting season yet, BUT also probably the weakest in a long time if we look at the top 2 teams. My opinion is that if we had replaced any team with a title winning side of the last 10 years they would have run away with it already. This is obviously hard to verify.

Well technically Pool had strengthened over the summer. Just didn't work out for them.

I think I'm a believer in the 2nd thesis - Give Chelsea & Arsenal one more season to consolidate. Things will be restored back to normal in the table. Don't get me wrong - city n totty have improved, but the weakening of those London clubs came first.

What are people thinking of doing for Liverpool coverage from GW30 onwards. Suarez or even Carroll are decent choices but with most going for Rooney, RVP and Ba, its tough to get them in. Tempted to go Suarez instead of Rooney and get Nani in for Utd coverage?

Trouble is, by the time you get Nani in, Valencia will be back. There's then the threat of Nani being a rotation risk with Young and also not being as explosive on the left wing. Most impressive thing about Liverpool this season has been their defence, and particularly with their good run of fixtures, i may just get Glen Johnson. Above strikers you mentioned like Rooney, RVP, Ba and even Aguero have had explosive hauls in several weeks, and we haven't seen that yet from Suarez or Carroll.

No, Why people are even thinking of picking suarez is beyond me. Pool had a run of good fixtures in the early part of the season and he didn't perform then, actually he didn't perform well in most of his games so why do we think he'll do well now? Plus, look at man united's fixtures, I'm going with both rooney and nani.

suarez is the target man for a big 6 team
he is guaranteed starts and 90min
he has a good scoring record
and he is cheaper than the likes of bent or hernandez or adebayor
he has low ownership among the elite teams so he'll be a differential

Doubling or even trebling in defence is the way forward IMO. Wouldn't go anywhere near any midfielders, their either rubbish or not regulars. I would maybe consider Suarez because I'll probably need to take a risk or two.

        Krul Mignolet
        Richards Evans G.Johnson Kelly Taiwo
        x Bale Sigurdsson Mclean x
        RVP Rooney Ba

x & x will be either Gerrard & Yaya or Silva & Valencia.

Thoughts on Sessegnon for the rest of the season? Like most others I've got him, but my recently devised GW28 master plan includes switching him out (for Sigurdsson) so I can use the money elsewhere. Problem is, I'm not convinced his returns will dry up and would be relatively nervous going without him. Would be interesting to hear what everybody else thought.

I might add MClean/ Siggy to Sess in midfield, but offloading him seems like too early and knee jerk to me. I am for selling high/ big cash players in your team in order to spend the cash wisely, not the value ones. Just my 2cents

Team at the moment (2 free transfers & 2.5m in the bank):

    Krul(WOL)
    Simpson(WOL) Kompany(BLA) Richards(BLA)
    Dempsey(qpr) Bale(ars) McClean(wba) Valencia(nor)
    Aguero(BLA) Ba(WOL) RVP(TOT)

subs - Vorm, Taiwo, Pilkington, Kelly

Gonna sell Valencia and the stand out choice to come in is Silva, but would mean selling Richards/Kompany. What to you think about doing Richards & Valencia > Evans & Silva?

Other candidate is Mata i suppose. Maybe just a straight swap for Valencia and then save a transfer for next week but i have a feeling we'll score against City and i'll likely need Evans in future weeks even if i don't start him this GW.

Yeah? Nani was awful against Ajax i thought plus do you not think Silva is going to have a field day with our midfield? Of course Nani has the potential to turn it on at any time (and Norwich are hardly going to stop him if he does hit some decent form) BUT it's a bit of a leap of faith imo

I've only not agreed with the Silva transfer as I'm a big fan of doubling up on Citeh's defence and I like that you have Richards and Kompany. Having two expensive defenders will also make it very easy for you to change one in a couple weeks when the likes of G.Johnson, Evra, Baines, Skrtel are going to be highly sought after!

I Nani wasn't great but I think away to Norwich and on his favoured RW gives him a very good chance of scoring or at least assisting. Also you can't have a shaved "N" in the side of your head and not get FPL points imo, all about self-belief 😉

I believe the one huge mistake Wenger has made over the last 4-5 years has been his wage policy, which can be put down to him being stubborn, Because of players like Almunia, Arshavin, Chamakh being paid in the same region as the rest of the starting 11, Arsenal have suffered. Taking their wages to be 50,000 pounds a week, which I believe is the case their total wage sum comes out to be approximately 8 million pounds a year just for these three. Also because of their high wages, Arsenal have to keep them untill their contract finishes because no club is willing to pay such huge amounts, this, in my opinion is depleting the reserves Wenger has to spend and also giving him a false sense of assurance that he has these players as back up, now this may or may not be the case but it's something that I believe has played a pivotal role in Arsenal's descent.

I have poor knowledge about Arsenal's wage structure but the Arshavin example is a bit misleading imo, he was a superstar when he was bought so would've been on premium wages in any team. For some reason he isn't anymore and that's unlucky for them.

Ok, Arshavin could be excluded but Chamakh, Almunia, Fabianski, Djourou.. the list really is long, and each player on average costs around 2.7 million pounds every year.

          Yeah, I hear your point.

I suppose your way of looking at it is one way, but the other way (that is a result/reason depending on how you look at it) obviously is that those players are just not good enough. Oh anyway I don't know how much players of their quality is generally paid. Hm.

When they signed Arshavin he looked excellent and that seemed reasonable.
Most bad signings also have inflated wages.
Arsenal have many problems but I don't think this is one that they have that much more than most other clubs.
We pay Bentley, Gomes and Defoe (somehwere near equivalent to the trio you mention) around the same.

I'm pretty sure I've read that the Spurs top earners are on 70k a week but that it's likely that will be increased to 100k a week for next season in a bid to keep their best players.

Adebayor is on 225k a week if you care, according to recent Redknapp quotes in the Guardian. Massive. City paying most of it of course.

Interestingly, I was talking to an Arsenal fan yesterday who attributed their failings to their wages being too LOW; in other words, that their refusal to offer over a hundred thousand a week made signings difficult and impeded contract negotiations with existing top players. Maybe a bit of both to be honest.

chamakh's high wage is due to the fact that he was signed on free transfer (look at joe cole's wage for reference)
i thik the last couple fo big spendings for wenger were:
walcott 16mil for a 17 years old, disappointing as he never reached the heights his early days promised
nasri 22.5 if im not wrong, diappointing that he went away to sit on a bench and get paid more
      rvp, ravaged by injuries
      vermaelen, ravaged by injuries
      archavin spectacular drop of form
even rosicky was a wizard in germany but injuries killed his pace and his game

so i dnt really blame the guy for giving up on spending after such an unfortunate record
this season was so bad and the transfer market was so inflated coz of FFP, i think the players prices and wages will go down for te next couple of years which will get arsenal back in the frame

RVP was signed for 2 million I think, great business, but 16 million for a 17 year old is a bit crazy no matter how much potential the lad has. Obviously everything is so easy in hindsight.

Using RVP as an example of a bad signing? Really?
They paid less than £3 million for him. Even including injuries he's one of the better PL signings.

i meant rvp for the salary not the transfer fee
only until this year he managed a run of 20+ games without going away for a couple of month
and in this case u always need an expensive backup who will be overpaid and might find himself on the bench

I am kind of hoping him to play. If not then I have three not-playing subs (senderos, valencia, Shotton), which could be too risky.

Have one FT, so thought Senderos/Shotton for JEvans. But am afraid that Evans will not get his usual 90 mins anymore.

If u r hoping to play than it isn't good mate. There wasn't official confirmation, but I read somewhere that he is injured for weeks. I believe there will be some official ones before the deadline. All the players I want for the season (especially at the back) are getting injuries. Damn, I am never gonna state that.

          Examples: Saylor, Caulker, Senderos

Same position, better things to be doing. Looks like he won't be available for GW26, but I imagine if you've structured your team well enough you wouldn't be playing him this week anyway.

Should hopefully be back for GW27, but all these single goals Fulham are letting in at the moment are really starting to ruin my team 😕

I had superb defense after my WC, but is ruined by Shotton not playing, Senderos letting those goals and his injury, Kompany injured for a week, and BAE scoring huge (after I transferd him out). Last thing I need is Santon to get injured and I give up.

    Team at the moment is:

    Sorensen SWA

Simpson WOL / Kompany BLA / Taiwo FUL

Wright-Phillips FUL / Dempsey qpr / Silva BLA / Bale tot

Aguero BLA / Van Persie TOT / Ba WOL

    Bench: Schwarzer, Shawcross, Moses, Kelly

    Got 2FT and 0.1m

Anyone been in a position where they haven’t used one of their 2 frees?

Stumped where to use a free for this week, will downgrade SWP eventually so I can upgrade aguero to rooney, but as he’s got a home fixture against fulham thought I’d keep him.

Right decision not to double up on stoke's defence by playing shawcross? (benched him last GW for his 10pts!)

    No one tempted by Ramires.

    BOL(h) WBA(a) STK(h)

Easiest set of fixtures even when you include WBA who are terrible at home this season.

Chelsea off form, but surely Drogba will give them some ooomph up front.

+100 😆 It isn't his season. One year wonder. Ramires might be good but I am not convinced by Chelsea atm. Seems we are struggling to score. His finishing isn't that good and seems like he won't play in the front 3. We need to see Drogba influence to our game.

I'm a bit tempted by him. I often am actually. Bit wary though of Chelsea players as they've burned me so badly this season, and what Jamsiep said about him being better against teams that go for it and then tire. He doesn't really have the skills to unlock a team trying to defend.

I think he's a brilliant player and if we just knew Chelsea would score early often enough so there would be chances for him to counter I'd buy him.

same issue as me. what to do with Tony V.

sell him and buy Moses to rotate with McLean so you don't have the "who to bench" problem either.

then use the extra cash to upgrade your defence.

Your forwards all look ok to me, yes you'll probably need to get rid of Valencia but not necessarily this week. It's defence you need to worry about. There's a good chance Richards will play, but not BAE. So I would put Caulker in instead and pray for a Swansea clean sheet and put Shorey as first sub.

You dont really want to go taking any hits for a replacement imo.
