Sweeping out of the frozen North with his Geordie horde, Demba Ba’s dismembering of the Premier League’s finest legions has struck fear into the hearts of defences up and down the land. A rampaging season has already seen the Senegalese sensation plunder 16 goals thus far and, despite stalling at the African Cup of Nations, he’s now back installed as part of the Magpies’ unlikely charge on a top four placing…

Arriving at Upton Park from Hoffenheim in the January 2010/11 transfer window, seven goals in just 12 league games for West Ham quickly cemented Ba a reputation on these shores. Having acquired a taste for top-flight goals, he was quick to pledge himself to Newcastle when the Hammers’ relegation triggered a release clause in his contract last summer, and with a modest Fantasy Premier League (FPL) valuation of 6.5, he cut an imposing figure in many pre-season watchlists.

Ba’s campaign didn’t get off to the best of starts; his decision to fast during Ramadan at the start of the season affected his on-pitch displays. A series of sluggish performances harvested three substitute appearances and no goals in the first four gameweeks, as his FPL price resultantly slipped to 6.2.

A return to first-team duties in Gameweek 5 led to a glut of goals. A hat-trick at home to Blackburn the following weekend sounded the starting gun on an irresistible run of attacking performances that have seen him notch 131 Fantasy points in just 17 games.

Included in Ba’s total are 24 bonus points, second only to Robin Van Persie’s 30 thus far. Further comparison with the Arsenal skipper shows Ba has averaged 7.33 points per start; perhaps surprisingly, this is superior to Van Persie’s 7.25 points per start and illustrates just how key a Fantasy asset the Newcastle man has been this term. Since returning from African Cup of Nations duties, his price has soared, rising by 0.6 up to 7.9 in the last three gameweeks, as winter wildcards afforded Fantasy managers a chance to reassemble squads and acquire his services.

PlayerPointsGoalsBonusPoins per StartAverage PriceCurrent Price
Van Persie18522307.2512.713.4
Ba13916247.336.97.9

Factoring in his time at West Ham, Ba’s record in England’s top-flight is astonishing: a career Premier League goals-to-games ratio of 0.7- that’s better than Thierry Henry, better than Alan Shearer, better than, well, anyone, if you take 10 goals minimum as a qualifier.

If the form book and spot-kick duties aren’t sufficient temptation, three of the next four courses on Demba’s menu are at home (WOL SUN ars NOR), kicking off with a potentially profitable encounter with a rudderless Wolves side, still smarting from their catastrophic Molineux spanking at the hands of West Brom. The aforementioned Van Persie, along with City’s Sergio Aguero and a resurgent Wayne Rooney, powered by improving fixtures, all lay convincing claims to our Fantasy forward lines. However, Ba undoubtedly has the weaponry and the platform to outscore all three over the next few Gameweeks.

Logic. This is my first time playing FPL, but I see certain logic. There was no player who had the form whole season. There were just certain periods when certain player was really in form (and it was worth having him), but that never lasted more than 2 months. The whole trick is: get on the train as soon he is in form and get of the train as soon he is not so good (what is hard due to emotional bonds without players).

There is a reason why people transfer out Silva, consider RvP, want to bring in YaYa, Mata.... They all feel that the period that RvP, Ba, Silva were scoring huge must inevitably come to an end. Now, when is that end.... no one knows. But sure it must come. Neither RvP can score hattricks until the end of season, it is inevitably that his form will go down.

i'd rather wait for the slump to start and then get rid instead of unreasonably anticipating the slump and get rid in advance. then again, i've got Papiss Cisse and i anticipate him scoring more than Ba

I agree. Still i am aware that in few weeks my attack will look different then now. I do not know who will be banging, but i am almost sure that RvP and Ba will not be the ones on the top.

          who's considering RVP? 🙂

yes, adding/dropping at the right time is a key to this game. But Ba in form is worth as much as any 10 mil+ striker, for 2-3 million less. His value cant be ignored. His fixtures are great. He scored his first game back.

Sure, but I do not expect anymore hat-tricks again top teams. But yes, for his price he is the best value around. I have him. But some people thing that Papis will score more.

Well Ba didn't have from at the start of the season, he didnt have form while he was away at the ANC, so do those 2 seplls not satisfy your theory?

Alos, had you played more seasons than this one, you;d know its quite possible for a player to carry his form throught the 38 games. Henry, Drogba, Ronaldo, all did so on numerous occasions in previous seasons.

I am just giving my perspective. And am keeping Ba, he is great value and will be. But am also aware that in few week there will be some other musts than we have now. Maybe the problem will vets in FPL is that you expect it will always last whole season. It can, but I do not expect it neither with RVP, Silva, either with Ba.

            Cheers.

My advice would be to play the fixture list, and don't try and guess who's form will drop. Weak opposition, more than anything else in this game i've found, dictates which players have a likelyhood of running into a bit of form.

Demba ba has 4 of his next 6 games at home, and one of his away games is at West Brom, so it may as well be at home as well, given their home form. That's 5 from 6 very favourable games for Newcastle and Ba, and their only other game in that 6, is away to an ARsenal team, licking their wounds and feeling sorry for themselves.

I'd keep Ba. But i'd agree with you in thinking that RVP is very droppable now.

I am not courageous enough. Although I am aware that i should have transfer Silva out weeks ago, and am almost sure that Bale's good weeks are gone. The most elementary logic says that even the RvP himself cannot do well whole season, could do few months, then have few average months and then start again (what I hope with Rooney to happen).

              B) RVP to go off form in a big way (Please)
              C) Rooney to have a bit of a purple patch

Making an absurd statement only in order to avoid common rule (given by Mark) and making it so explicitly clear (capitalizing FIRST) was not really mature. Like little children on the playground trying to be best and first.

    Krul (Vorm)
    Williamson, Kompany, Evans (Kelly, Caulker)
    Silva, Bale, Sess, Valencia (McClean)
    RVP, Aguero, Ba

0.0 in bank, 2FT, quick vote please

    A) Williamson & Valencia -> Raylor & Moses
    B) Valencia -> Moses (save 2FT for next week)
    C) Bale & Valencia -> Mata & Moses (only loose 0.4 on Bale)
    D) Other

Note: I have my other WC left so can get back Valencia & Bale in few weeks if needed.
Note: in the 8.0 and under price range prefer Lionel Moses over Taarabt, Siggy, Ox & Ramires

Ba.....yes please. And what a great captain choice against rudderless Wolves this weekend.

      Ba/Aguero, Ba/Aguero, Ba/Aguero............been bothering me for days.

Ba could be a good choice as won't be as popular as Aguero, but City could easily spank 6 past Blackburn.

If you have both you are laughing. Both will score in my opinion....just a question of which will score more.

Wolves are now sniffing around my team's manager Gus Poyet, after everyone else has turned them down. Can't see Poyet leaving a team on the up for a team on the slide.

Poyet's got a long term project going on, even if he doesn't think Brighton are ready for promotion just yet, they could well make it next year and establish themselves like Norwich or Swansea.

He wouldn't go, just because wolves have a slightly bigger budget

    for the gamblers

    tevez

Vc go 6/4 that he starts 1-3 league games the rest of this season

There are only 13 to go and aguero seems to start every game even when tevez was around he only started 1 i think

While hes odds-on to play again mancini is still refusing to talk about him in press conferences so theres a chance he may not n if he does i cant see mancini wanting to give him a leading role in winning the PL as itd over-shadow it a bit if he did

So 1-3 starts at 6/4 looks huge to me

    LINDEGAARD - Sorensen
    Enrique - Evans - Santon - Caulker - SENDEROS
    Silva - Dempsey - Sessegnon - Walters - VALENCIA
    Rvp - Aguero - Ba

1FT, 0.2m in the bank. Which of the players in bold needs addressing most urgently?

Or should I hold this week as I can still field a decent team, and then have a more thorough tweak of my squad next GW with 2FT in my pocket?

Yeah - I need info on Senderos ASAP from Fulham. If he looks like being back then I will hold onto him.

Ideally I would want rid of Caulker, not convinced on the chances of Swans clean sheets for the rest of the campaign, but in that price range desirable options are very limited.

I was considering tweaks in midfield and up top over the next few weeks that would free up cash, followed by an improvment of my defence thereafter.

you can take a punt and drop senderos, then bring kelly in for caulker next week, following week.....
i just think with 2 home games for stoke, walters possibly playing up front again, this is the time to use him, bench valencia and tinker with the back. make moves in the back to set up the ideal transfer you want in a week or two for walters or valencia or whoever.

True, however you also need to throw into the mix the projected onward form of United and Arsenal.

United historically end a season strongly, Arsenal recently, do not.

RVP will no doubt still score plenty, but I reckon Rooney could easily outstrip him from here on in.

Rooney is a Fantasy managers worse nightmare. Prone to long droughts but when he hits pockets of form becomes indispensible. Not having him at the start of this season cost me dear...getting him in after a couple of weeks kick started my season. I'd say focus on Rooney while his hot streak continues. Nothing worse than a player owned by so many and captained by most of them running riot while you have to watch on from the sidelines.

Rooney --gwk28 for me...by hook or by crook.

Is this true form or a false dawn though?
Hard to call Chelsea form - it's two penalties (although at least he's stopped missing them I guess).
He was very good against Liverpool but then against Ajax I thought he dropped far too deep to be that effective.
I got burnt badly earlier in the season but the only way I can currently get him in is to ditch RVP which seems fairly mad.

true form, He was inspirational vs Chelsea in the last 30 or so minutes and Great vs Liverpool, I'm sticking my head out and saying he can (not will but it is probable) go a great streak now, especially with the fixtures easing considerably, in fact if Aguero had two slightly lesser fixtures I would have easily dumped him for Rooney ASAP.

If Adebayor still is doubtful by Friday, I shall get Ba for a four point hit, I think. What say you? 🙂

Why? You should tell him to keep Ade, Ba will probably score > 4 this week.

If we both have Ba but he's paid -4 more for him then it's a guarantee that I'll score better from that player. Adebayor could still outscore Ba this week - you never know.

i doubt how doubtful ade really is. 'arry was quick to address AFTER the 0-0 to Stevenage. Possible excusing why a stronger team selection wasnt made for the cup game?

Any Chelsea fans around? Wondering what you think AVB will do with Ivanovic - having watched him play CB vs. Everton he didn't look like a threat at all (not even going up for some of the corners) but against B'ham at RB he looked like a massive threat.
So do you think he'll stay at RB or be moved back to CB?

Ivano - Luiz - JT - Cole is definitely first-choice when all are fit, imo.

Injury to one of our CBs means Cahill/Ivano will be drafted in. Bose will be second-fiddle at RB & Ryan at LB.

I'm not a chelsea fan but it depends really on Cole, because Neither Iva nor Bos are nailed on at RB when Cole is fit, even though AVB seems to prefer Bos, I would anyday play Iva as honestly, I believe he's there second best defender.

"AVB seems to prefer Bos" It's a myth. AVB has played Ivano at RB every time all our defs were fit.

Folks, how many players will you have for GW29 (if it stays as it is)? Do you plan some transfers?

I will have 11, but 3 are questionable from MIC.

I meant from the current team. 'cause if I will have 11 able to play, I do not mean to spent transfers/hits on getting more. I will rather do that for DGWs, where I will obviously have less players playing.

My defence is a mess! i've got Huth, Senderos, Shotton, Clark, Simpson. 1FT, I was planning on kompany for huth, is it worth a 4 point hit to swap clark aswel or just play Kompany, Simpson, Senderos if fit (Shotton if not). Thoughts?

do not do hits on defense. use it wisely, one by one. This week company, next week one of stoke out. s long you have 3 playing defs there is no need to do hits. It is simply not worth.

Who would you bring in for Clark? It would need to be someone with attacking potential, otherwise it's not worth taking a hit just in the hope of breaking even with a clean sheet.

thanks for your replies, yeah think ill just leave it at 1 FT this week, was thinkin Evans for Clark but thats more of a long term transfer and can wait.. Just not so confident in Senderos making it, and then Shotton who will replace him doesnt seem to be getting any game time so will be a measly 1 point at best probably but not worth a hit i guess.

Have a think about what transfers you might want to make next week though, because you may find that you will have other transfers you want to make next week and still need a hit to get rid of Clark. In which case I'd say just get it over and done with this week.

I did this week Shotton for Evans on FT. My pl;an was to save FT this week, but wanted to get rid of Shotton as soon as possible. Evans is long term transfer, so its worth. If you do not plan any transfer, do it then. If you do, do it this week.
