With confirmation of John Terry’s exploratory operation this evening, along with the injury to Jose Bosingwa’s in the 3-1 defeat in Naples, we’ve seen some movement on our Watchlist. With Terry potentially facing up to six weeks or more on the sidelines, Gary Cahill looks to have the opportunity to cement his a starting role in the centre of the Chelsea back four ahead of a favourable trio of fixtures.

A possible absence for Jose Bosingwa would also strengthen Cahill’s claims. Lining up at left-back in tonight’s 3-1 defeat to Napoli, the much criticised Bosingwa was forced off on 11 minutes with what was thought to be a hamstring injury. A spell on the sidelines would surely see Branislav Ivanovic continue in the right-back role for the foreseeable future, paving the way for Cahill to partner David Luiz in the centre of Andre Villas-Boas’ defence. It’s also interesting to note that Cahill was included on the teamsheet, at the expense of Luiz, left behind at Chelsea’s hotel prior to tonight’s game. Andre Villas-Boas has confirmed post-match that the scribbles were genuine.

Given the absence of Terry and the recent form of the Chelsea back four, the prospect of defensive returns from a Blues defender would seem bleak. However, Chelsea have conceded five goals in their last five league games, keeping two clean sheets – three of those five goals conceded were also against United. More significantly they welcome both Bolton and Stoke to Stamford Bridge in the next three, with a trip to West Brom providing the filling in a sandwich of fixtures that looks appealing.

Both Bolton and Stoke rank amongst the most impotent attacks right now. The Trotters have scored just a single goal in their last three league games, while Stoke have notched just two goals in their last five. West Brom meanwhile, despite fetching five at Molineux last time out, have scored just three goals in their last five matches in front of their home fans.

With clean sheets at a premium outside of United and City, the statistics clearly indicate that Chelsea, despite the obvious frailties on show, have decent defensive prospects over the next three and with Cahill available for 5.2, he is the cheapest member of the rearguard. The former Bolton man will also bring a proven goal threat at set-plays, to help fill the void left by his skipper Terry – scorer of four goals this term.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Hey guys, I have thought of these 3 options and haven't gotten any closer to deciding. Care to help me out?

    A. Walters----->Moses
    Valencia-----> Mata 4pt hit.

    B. Valencia------>Moses
    Graham----->Demba Ba 4pt hit.

    C. Do nothing (BORING!)

    Who to bench out of:

    Sigurdsson (sto), Sessegnon (wba), Bale (ars), Silva (BLA), Cabaye (WOL)
    Van Persie (TOT), Rooney (nor), Fletcher (new)

    To be honest I'd go Bale but that's illegal, right? Fletcher is staying in because he'll score a consolation goal.

    Looks great on paper, but can chelsea keep a CS without Terry?

    Hmmm might enable a chance to change things up in defense

    Richards and Santon
    to
    Raylor and Cahill.

    That could offer a better balance at the expense of losing Citeh defense

    ive been deciding all week,

    other option is to downgrade silva and upgrade sturridge to rooney..

      or other posibility of downgrading Bale to a 4.6 mid and upgrading sturridge

      keeps my man city, rvp and rooney upfront. its a 4 point hit but worth it?

    On topic Cahill is certainly an interesting option for the next few. A good run of fixtures for a goalscoring defender always has the potential for excitement.

    REPOST
    Everytime I take off the rose-tinted glasses with regards van persie it seems more and more like he has to go.

    1) In his last 10 gws his only big scoring weeks have come against Blackburn(H) QPR(H) and Aston Villa(A) none of whom are notable for their clean sheets. Those matches have included Swansea, Bolton, Wolves and Sunderland.

    2) Next few fixtures are TOT liv NEW -blank- each of whom are particularily solid at the back, especially -blank-

    3) Fair enough he has a 6.375 points per game average for the last 8 GWs but that’s skewed by one massive 23 point haul, it’s only 4ppg without that, alot of 2-pointers in there.

    4) Wenger and the Arsenal system are crumbling.

    5) Alternatives look very tasty …Rooney, Aguero who have immeasurably superior fixtures

    6) Everyone has RVP so he’d be an anti-differential

    Join the bandwagon, watch as he delivers 2-pointers and a blank over the next 4 weeks and feel smug

      All of your points are well made. I'm sure others could post 6 counter arguments. It is tempting. I remember getting rid of Nani at exactly the right time last season and it was a sweat inducing decision at the time. I'm gonna give it at least another week or two before deciding.

    Team at the moment (2 free transfers & 2.5m in the bank):

    Krul(WOL)
    Simpson(WOL) Kompany(BLA) Richards(BLA)
    Dempsey(qpr) Bale(ars) McClean(wba) Valencia(nor)
    Aguero(BLA) Ba(WOL) RVP(TOT)
    subs - Vorm, Taiwo, Pilkington, Kelly

    Gonna sell Valencia and the stand out choice to come in is Silva, but would mean selling Richards/Kompany. What to you think to these:

    a) Richards & Valencia > Evans & Silva
    b) Richards & Valencia > Cahill & Silva
    c) Valencia > Nani
    d) Valencia > Mata
    e) any other suggestions much appreciated!

    C or D would allow me to carry over a transfer for next week but i have a feeling we'll score against City. What ya reckon?

      I think Mancini will be all about cleansheets for the run in. No disrespect to Rovers but I can really see a MCi CS...keep Richards for the next 2 games at least. He will be a right winger with CS potential.
      I would go (d) Valencia to Mata. I know Chelsea look in dire straits but I think they will bounce back and possibly stuff their next 3 opponents. Mata is the man you want for those...others don't have him ATM and it's a gamble...but one that could pay off big for you especially as the rest of your team is good (if gamble fails you'll still do well)

        I agree with this, City are formidable at home and Mancini having seen how easily his side switched off defensively against Porto will be looking to get them to tighten up. This, combined with Blackburn's lack of any ability to defend, plus Richards' presence going forward make him absolutely worth keeping for the next 2 weeks. After than it be worth looking to switch him out for either a Pool defender, Evra, Evans (if you don't already own him) or Verm.

          I was kind of forgetting his attacking threat. Despite my belief that we will score he is likely to see plenty of the ball down that right hand side and may well pick up some attacking or bonus points. Hmmmmm perhaps i will just make the one change then and save a transfer.... although it means i have to forget about getting Silva in 🙁

            I get your record in away games, but if any team is capable of ending it, it's City.

        Nani and Mata both blow hot and cold, they are brilliant or useless they have no inbetween. Mata is a better bet for the next 2 weeks, as he is at home. but I would also be tempted by a wee gamble on the boy Walters. Looks like he might be back OOP and is still on pens.

          I agree and that's why i think Silva is the stand out replacement, his consistency is just remarkable. Walters is a big no from me, i can't stand the lummox despite his obvious attractions.

        You think City will keep us out this weekend? Of course i'ts possible but i just can't see it happening myself and that's why i'm more tempted by A and B. Although saying that i do fancy City to keep clean sheets in both GW27 and 28

    WC

    Reina/Al Habsi
    Kompany/Cahill/R Taylor/Evans/S Kelly
    A Young/Dempsey/Sessegnon/Yaya/Moses
    RVP/Aguero/Ba

    I like the keeper combo as Al Habsi has 2 decent fixtures when Liverpool don't have a game and then Reina can play the rest as Liv have a strong run in and potentially 2 doubles.

    A Young is a punt and I've chosen him over Mata as I want a differential.

    Vorm, Mignolet
    Shotton, Kompany, Simpson, Kelly, Turner
    Bale, Demps, Valencia, Silva, McClean
    RVP, Dzeko, Ba
    1ft 2.6 in bank

    Should I:
    A) Replace shotton (improve defence bosingwa, caulker etc)
    B) Replace Valencia (Midfield downgrade to Siggy, Dyer or Moses) Midfield upgrade to Mata, Nani
    C) Downgrade Valencia and Upgrade Dzeko to Aguero.

    Thoughts? Thanks guys.

      Wait and see if Dzeko plays in the Europa league, if he plays 60+mins he prob won't play at the w/e.

    The truth is - Chelski are fecked. As my beloved Beauswinger has injured himself, I am no longer interested. No Mata. 😉

        That was pretty much my entire thought process.

        But my other thought process is also my opponent doesnt have siggy and so I could play him and get lucky...

        But he doesnt have Ba either and he is my captain so fingers crossed.
