Nothing gets the adrenaline coursing through the arteries in a frenzy of fist-clenching excitement like a budget goalkeeper transfer. The Fantasy Premier League (FPL) equivalent of writing a “thank you” letter to an elderly relative for an underwhelming Christmas present: there is always something more fun to do, but if you don’t act when you should, you could end up empty-handed on your birthday.

The January wildcard window afforded Fantasy managers the chance to cash in on the accrued value of early-season rotational favourites like Tim Krul and Michel Vorm and look to pastures new, and with increased liquidity comes an increased freedom to shop around with immediate returns in mind. Enter the big climber in our recent Watchlist update: Wigan’s Ali Al-Habsi.

Making just ten appearances in a five-year apprenticeship under Jussi Jaaskelainen at Bolton, Wigan snapped up the Omani keeper on loan in the summer of 2010. Quickly establishing himself as a cult hero at the DW, Al-Habsi’s manful, if somewhat balletic, defence of many a lost cause saw him crowned Wigan’s player of the season, and Roberto Martinez was quick to reward him with a four-year deal.

Priced at 4.5 in the FPL this term, Al-Habsi made the early running in the budget keeper category with two clean sheets and a penalty save in the first four games. A formidable shot stopper, he sits third in the Premier League saves table this season with 95, just one save behind Swansea’s wunderkind Michel Vorm in second, and with an astonishing four penalty stops, he boasts double the total of his nearest rival.

The clean sheets may have dried up in recent months for the Latics, but with the fixture breeze turning strongly in their favour, the opportunity for Al-Habsi to augment his save points with shutouts is now beckoning. A home tie against an Aston Villa side with only one league win this year is immediately followed by another game at the DW, against a Swansea team who have often struggled to export their Liberty Stadium form on the road. An away trip to an inconsistent Norwich and a home game against the usually goal-shy West Brom complete a quartet of Gameweeks in which Al-Habsi is playable throughout.

For those looking to rotate keepers over the longer term, Al-Habsi fits snugly with Norwich’s John Ruddy or Swansea’s Michel Vorm until at least Gameweek 33, and could prove a valuable differential prospect in the weeks to come. Every transfer is critical at this stage of the season, and although swapping keepers may seem prosaic, in a game of chess it’s often the seemingly innocuous move that wins the match.

    Nice captain choice?

I don't think he gets enough points to be a great captain choice but he will most likely get you something 12, 14 or 16 after points have been doubled.

I reckon lot of our problems tonight were down to the twins, they have no defensive discipline at all. Puts way too much pressure on the CM's to track back and on the CB's to deal with crosses.

Yeah the da silvas kept giving the ball way. Park can't play in a midfield 2 because he has roams all over the place. It was Cleverley vs the ajax midfield, then Scholes. Berbatov i find just infuriating to watch and Ashley Young was completely anonymous. Jones looks confused as to what sort of footballer he is, all in all the only plus was De Gea!

I agree. Berbacrap is the most lazy player in the team. He is so annoying to watch.
Young's form is absolutly awful; Valencia needs to come back soon. It almost looks like there are no wingers without Valencia.

When you play 4-4-2 you have to have pragmatic full backs and United have pretty much always played this way. As exciting as they are, I just don't see them fitting into the side on a regular basis unless we start playing with 3 CM's and that wont happen under Fergie.

I think you can just about play Evra/Nani on the left and Valencia/Rafael on the right - but that's only because Valencia is such a workhorse that it could work.

It wont always work and that has a lot to do with not having a world class box to box midfielder. Valencia wont always be able to cover for Rafael because he'll often be upfield himself so then it's down to having a central midfielder to slot in back there. Once that happens, you're already a man short in the middle of the field.

Yep that works and it's happened a fair amount hasn't it this season? Evra gets forward a lot but seems to balance it with defence better.

That's a responsible formation, I also wonder if United need one when they need to go all out for goals. Early in the season I thought they were playing stunning stuff with what looked like 4-3-3. If they're trying to break down a stubborn team, I wonder if they could play the ultimate attacking formation:

            .Young..Rooney..Welbeck
            .Nani..Cleverley..Valencia
            Evra Evans Jones Rafael

Both fullbacks overlapping when required to overload opposition midfields by getting 5 in the middle. Valencia's defensive workrate would balance out Rafael's attacking runs, Nani as he has so often would have license to drift central and let pragmatic Evra run into the space on the left flank, Welbeck drifting centrally to let Valencia overlap on his right, with Young an out-and-out left forward.

Cleverley isn't strong enough or mobile enough to play as the only defensive option. His game is all about passing, especially one touch, and he works best with a player next to him who can take on most of the defensive duties imo.

Yeah I'll be honest, that is a defensively weak team not to be used against anyone with a decent attack. Not a single defensive midfielder in there really and I can see why SAF plays the 4-4-2 with Carrick - how else would it work?

Utd's strongest team now imo is:

                  De Gea
                  Smalling Rio Vidic Evra
                  Valencia Clev Carrick Nani
                  Rooney
                  Welbeck

It hasn't played together once this season yet though.

And of course that really answers why United don't generally play 4-3-3. It is hard to make two attacking midfielders work with a single defensive midfielder, there's a lot of pressure on him. Also, United have wingers, not centre-leaning attacking midfielders, so I think it's working around the personnel.

You can´t put one on the shelf for so many odd games (with a shoulder injury or whatever), and banish another to god knows what purgatory SAF sends them to...and have them only defend against dudes they know in training sessions; and not expect them to push the panic button on challenges, or defend like Beagles off the leash when they defend sights unseen. I can see defensive cohesion is going to be a huge problem. That throws everyone else off. Now, if only Citeh and Spurs find some way to falter this will be one glorious clusterf*ck to the finishline.

ok folks am I right not to make a transfer this week

    Mignolet

    Evans, Richards, Santon

Silva, Bale (vc) McLean, Dempsey, Siggy

    Aguero (c) RvP

    Schwarzer, Taiwo, Caulker, Gerbil

I am aware of the Gerbil issue, but intend to swap him for Yak next week, and that seems pointless this week. It also gives me 2 FTs to use in GW28 to draft in Roonpig and a Pool defender (or someone else if Pool have no fixture, though that could leave them with 3 DGWs, or even a TGW )

    Dzeko to Aguero
    Gerbil to Ba
    Silva to Yaya

8 point hit, but I'm chasing now. Yay or nay?

I think all 3 of them are going to have monster games and all the people I'm chasing have Silva. None have Yaya

Maybe just do Dzeko to Ba, no hit? And Gerbil next week for someone like Yakubu?

Silva can cover Aguero's points potential for the next two, then get rid for a differential

So... after reviewing the last three man city fixtures, I believe Aguero has played around 174 mins, Dzeko around 27 mins and Balotelli 78.

Anyone think Aguero might sit this weekend? I was considering taking a 4 point hit to get Aguero in my team in place of Dzeko (also swapping Moses for Surman), but now I'm not too sure.

I think Aguero is absolutely as essential as it can get over the next 2 gw's.

2 home games against the 2 worst defences in the league? Are you kidding me!!!

I don't have him and, frankly, I'm going to take a hit to get him in for waste of space Dzeko. I am already behind in my mini league and to not have him for the next 2 GW's will probably see me fall further behind.

Here goes number two ... 😕

Europa League Group H Match day 1 Preview

A Group of big FFS personalities, now hugely expanded by the late arrival of Disparate Dan, makes for a tale of subplots. Joint favourites RoysCallerAnne (22,487), a father again, will hope to push Disparate Dan (11,978) all the way! Will it be romance if Bora Bora rains Kuyts N’Gogs on Disparate Dan’s parade? Is it Udit who will be Invictus? Or will RoysCallerAnne be singing Bohemian Crhapsody in the rain?

Club Brugge (Bora) vs Maribor (Disparate Dan)
A tough match up to start, as the late arrival at the Ball takes on the Serbian Gooner.
    Injury / Team News:
Club Brugge - With only Richards a doubt, this well balanced squad seems sure to acquit itself well. Great discipline means two free transfers are available.
Maribor - Valencia, Enrique and Lindegaard unavailable! Two transfers already made for free. My suspicion is that Ba has crept into this line up, which means that Valencia may have become Sigurdsson, or Davies, or Moses ...
    Predicted Line Ups
Club Brugge: Sorenson; Shawcross, Simpson, Evans; Bale, Silva, Dempsey, Sessegnon; Ba, Aguero, van Persie
Maribor: Vorm; Kompany, Simpson, Evans; Bale, Silva, Dempsey, McClean; Aguero, ❓ , van Persie
Match Verdict - Draw - too close to call.

    Birmingham (Udit) vs Braga (RoysCallerAnne)
Two very popular posters go at it in this round. Both have problems to solve, and it’s not easy to call. I’ve gone for Udit, as the HOME advantage may be crucial
    Injury / Team News
Birmingham - After a disappointing week, AND an injured Huth, as well as a doubtful Richards, Udit may need his two free transfers!
Braga: Another disappointing game week, with one of two free transfers used, perhaps to replace the injured Huth. Also has Richards, and likes to double in his defence.
    Predicted Line Ups
Birmingham: Hart; Richards, Shotton, Simpson; Dempsey, Bale, Sessegnon, Walters; Morison Aguero van Persie
Braga: Sorenson; Richards, Santon, Senderos; Bale, Silva, Sessegnon, Etherington; Ba, Aguero, Van Persie
    Match Verdict - Home win

    Nani or Young?

Nani on tonight's performance, but really neither.

Yes. They both looked aweful tonight. Would rather have Nani over Young but would rather have Cleverley over both for the price.

I've got Nani in this week. I hope he has one of his games that kick off his form.

I think Nani could be due to go on a run over double figure gameweeks but we will see...

    Krul (Lindy)
Simpson, Evans J, Kompany (Kelly, Caulker)
    McClean, Demps, Silva, Bale, Sess
    Ba (c), RvP (vc)
2.3 in the bank and 2FT

Looking to get Rooney in for w28
    Sess > Sigurdsson
    Wellbeck > Rooney

Need to find another 1.2m to make it happen though.

Was thinking Silva -> Ya ya

Who starts up front for City on Sat? With Yaya back, do we think it'll be 2 up top or just lone striker (Kun more than likely)?

Unless either are rising/falling tonight I'd hold off until the press conferences, just in case you find out someone else you own is injured.
