Nothing gets the adrenaline coursing through the arteries in a frenzy of fist-clenching excitement like a budget goalkeeper transfer. The Fantasy Premier League (FPL) equivalent of writing a “thank you” letter to an elderly relative for an underwhelming Christmas present: there is always something more fun to do, but if you don’t act when you should, you could end up empty-handed on your birthday.

The January wildcard window afforded Fantasy managers the chance to cash in on the accrued value of early-season rotational favourites like Tim Krul and Michel Vorm and look to pastures new, and with increased liquidity comes an increased freedom to shop around with immediate returns in mind. Enter the big climber in our recent Watchlist update: Wigan’s Ali Al-Habsi.

Making just ten appearances in a five-year apprenticeship under Jussi Jaaskelainen at Bolton, Wigan snapped up the Omani keeper on loan in the summer of 2010. Quickly establishing himself as a cult hero at the DW, Al-Habsi’s manful, if somewhat balletic, defence of many a lost cause saw him crowned Wigan’s player of the season, and Roberto Martinez was quick to reward him with a four-year deal.

Priced at 4.5 in the FPL this term, Al-Habsi made the early running in the budget keeper category with two clean sheets and a penalty save in the first four games. A formidable shot stopper, he sits third in the Premier League saves table this season with 95, just one save behind Swansea’s wunderkind Michel Vorm in second, and with an astonishing four penalty stops, he boasts double the total of his nearest rival.

The clean sheets may have dried up in recent months for the Latics, but with the fixture breeze turning strongly in their favour, the opportunity for Al-Habsi to augment his save points with shutouts is now beckoning. A home tie against an Aston Villa side with only one league win this year is immediately followed by another game at the DW, against a Swansea team who have often struggled to export their Liberty Stadium form on the road. An away trip to an inconsistent Norwich and a home game against the usually goal-shy West Brom complete a quartet of Gameweeks in which Al-Habsi is playable throughout.

For those looking to rotate keepers over the longer term, Al-Habsi fits snugly with Norwich’s John Ruddy or Swansea’s Michel Vorm until at least Gameweek 33, and could prove a valuable differential prospect in the weeks to come. Every transfer is critical at this stage of the season, and although swapping keepers may seem prosaic, in a game of chess it’s often the seemingly innocuous move that wins the match.

Getting dangerously close to pushing the button on Huth & Bale -> Raylor & Mata this week (both free).

I think this move will be disapproved of by most on here, but with Bale's upcoming fixtures (ars, MUN, eve, Blank, che), the relatively small loss I would make on selling him now (0.4m atm), and the fact I still have my wildcard to bring him back, I think it could turn out to be a great move.

Sagna to keep him firmly in his pocket on Sunday...

I think Chelsea players are too expensive. They have nice fixtures but their form is awful.

Form definitely trumps fixtures this season.

In the main so do I, with the exception of perhaps Sturridge or Cahill (if he begins to get regular starts).

This would be a gamble on my part, no doubt about it, but I have ground to make up and everyone in my ML has Bale and very few have Mata. I can see Mata stepping up over the next few games - BOL, wba and STO in the next 3 have the potential for lots of Chelsea goals, and if that's the case I'd expect Mata to be involved. Bale can score against anyone, but I'd be amazed if he outscores Mata over the next 3 given he has ars (normally fairly solid at home, huge point to prove after recent disappointments, derby etc), MUN (fighting for the title, great record against TOT) and eve (recent upturn in form and usually stingy at home).

I don't disagree at all. I made a similar change. I switch Bale for Silva, I plan on picking Bale back in week 30-31.

What do you think are the chances of Silva being rested this weekend?

May do 4 pointer and go Dzeko to Aguero and Gerbil to Holt.

Norwich got decent set of games and Holt's good for goals and assists against anyone. Also allows me to keep Valencia and bench him until he's back.

Otherwise its an 8 pointer for Ba and Kun.

So, go for Kun and Holt instead for -4?

I definitely wouldn't take an 8 point hit - very hard to make that back.

Dzeko is a bit of a nightmare - uncertain whether he'll start at the w/e, but I wouldn't be surprised if he did and scored well.

Just had a look at your team and if it were me I think I'd take a gamble on Dzeko and just do Cisse -> Ba (no hit). Play 3-4-3 this week with Richards, JEvans and Taiwo at the back and leave Valencia on the bench. That's doable right?

How often are ye going to play 4 in defence?

Most weeks your defence picks itself, doesn't it?

          JEvans, Richards, BAE.

What, exactly, would you do with Cahill or Smalling most weeks?

Evans is not a guaranteed starter and Richards is liability. I currently have Jose Enrique by replacing him with Smalling or Cahill, I can afford to replace Richards with Kompany.

At least by having Evans and Smalling it almost guarantees me a starter in the United back four.

You have 8 players. With 4 FTs towards GW29.

I like it Newman, only if you don't want Valencia back again and you think he could be a rotation doubt due to the return of Nani/Young.

Actually I don't see the point of sticking with Enrique, who might have 2 blanks in 4 GWs. I'd do a simple JE > Raylor FT considering you have a vacant Newcastle spot open. He's more of a goal threat than Cabaye when he plays at RM, also on loads of set-pieces.

Big time pass on Raylor, Elnino. Not nailed on at all. I like Enrique as is. Sure, he has two blanks, but I'll just want pool defense for his two doubles, and I don't mind the defenders that I have to play instead here and in 29.

I think I may very well want Valencia back, but I'm not sure I can go into this week with him: team is just way too weak.

I think ben Arfa can get that spot back at any moment, honestly. And even if he does play, he is going to lose a lot of those set pieces to Cabaye.

Why get rid of a player with two double GWs coming up who will cost .7 more to get back in when I wasnt even going to play him for his blank fixtures anyway?

Edit: 0.4 more. Could fall even further in the next 3 weeks, making him 0.2/0.3 more. And you could even get defenders who are a greater goal threat - Skrtel/GJ.

              Great. 🙂
The thing is that I have to write 50 C++ programs & submit it tomorrow.
As it is a real hectic task, I have decided to copy it from some website & then print it and submit.
It saves me the effort of writing & wastage of time.

I'm having the same problem and everyone seems to think Dzeko-> Aguero is the GOAT move. I think if you're playing catch up in ur mini league Mata is the way to go. I'll prob end up taking the punt on Mata also as there is a reasonable chance Dzeko starts or that Aguero comes off after 60 mins

Dzeko came on for a 20minish cameo mid week in Euopa. I figure The Big Bad Itailian will either get the start at home or get the Cameo. Im in the same boat! Im probably going Dzeko>Aguero.

Not sure about that - 6th highest scoring MID in the game and great home form (2 of next 3 at the bridge against lowly opposition).

for that price, sixth highest is just not worth it. Not that impressive considering the 6 guys behind him are less then 10 points behind, and all but lampard cost less.

O, and he's in great home form? Since when is 2, 17, 2, 9, 2, 3, 13 great form? Awful numbers, even at home.

And don't forget: Norwich, Everton, Swans, villa, Fulham and Wigan in the last two months were lowly opposition, as well. And they didn't win a single one of those games. Didn't even score more than one goal in any of them,.

Fantasy garbage. 9.5 for a player on a team that can't score well, even against bad teams? I pass.

Looks like one of those GWs where there could be loads of goals and coverage in the top teams would be crucial. I'm fretting not having any United attack but Norwich are decent at home and United aren't flying.

We're on! No playing the card in GW27 & GW31, which is reasonable to me. You?

My team is fine. May be a bit wobbly in the back if Richards does not play but am not worried about it. A decent points return from Luiz and I could put an upset. Capt choice looms large also

Could we agree for now to no play in 27 or is that unfair in any way to you? I don't even know which of us plays at home first. 31 is probably ok too but I have not really looked at what I will do yet and do want to win a tight mini league. Let me know what you think

Assuming Chelsea beat Brum i'm really not too pushed about being able to field 11 in gameweek29. From those 4 matches there's not many obvious points. You'd want Dempsey, Ba, Newcastle DF, maybe a Ful / Swa DF and 3 United players. After that you're into punts like Cabaye, Sig, Moses etc. 8 or 9 players in all should be fine and you won't be screwed for the following GWs.

      • 16 Years

Also fielding 11 means you're left with only 3 players or less from City, Arsenal, Spurs, Sunderland, Liverpool and Chelsea. So only 3 from Silva, RVP, Kompany, Sessegnon, McClean, Bale, Enrique, Aguero, BAE etc.. bleh no thanks.
