International friendly week always fills Fantasy managers with dread. Already, we’ve seen a number of call-offs; the likes of Papiss Cisse, Didier Drogba, Rafael Van der Vaart and Phil Bardsley are all nursing apparent injuries ahead of the weekend. Elsewhere, Peter Odemwingie, Mark Schwarzer and Javier Hernandez have long-distance games on the agenda. All we can do now is watch on, cross our fingers, and hope none of our best-laid plans are scuppered:

Rafael Van der Vaart is one of a number of players to withdraw from international action. While most of the absentees could be classified as no more than precautionary, the Dutch FA confirmed Van der Vaart picked up an ankle injury at the Emirates on Sunday, and has been ruled out of Holland’s friendly with England tomorrow. Van der Vaart has only just returned from a calf problem, playing the second half in the 5-2 defeat at Arsenal- Harry Redknapp is likely to be cautious this weekend against United, for fear of further time on the sidelines for the Dutchman.

Redknapp has more injury worries, with the news that Kyle Walker has withdrawn from the England squad after he, too, picked up an ankle problem at Arsenal. With Vedran Corluka farmed out on loan, the Spurs boss has recalled Adam Smith from a loan spell at Leeds, perhaps raising question marks over Walker’s availability for this weekend’s home clash against the champions.

Newcastle have confirmed Papiss Demba Cisse picked up a slight groin injury in the 2-2 draw with Wolves. The forward was subbed off just after the hour mark with the problem and has since pulled out of Senegal’s game against South Africa, having been assessed by the club’s medical staff ahead of Sunday’s derby with Sunderland.

Didier Drogba is out of Ivory Coast’s friendly with Guinea. The Chelsea forward picked up a knee problem in Saturday’s 3-0 win over Bolton and is now undergoing treatment, with the Blues medical department monitoring his progress ahead of the trip to West Brom.

Aaron Ramsey has been ruled out of the Gary Speed Memorial match tomorrow evening. The Arsenal man was due to skipper Wales against Costa Rica but has failed to recover from an ankle injury picked up in the FA Cup defeat at Sunderland earlier this month.

Stephen Kelly has pulled out of the Republic of Ireland squad with a thigh problem. The right-back played the entire match in Fulham’s win at QPR on Saturday and has now established himself as an integral part of Martin Jol’s back-four, starting the last nine game for the Cottagers.

Phil Bardsley may miss out for Sunderland this weekend. The full-back has withdrawn from the Scotland squad due to a calf problem, with reports suggesting he may have torn the muscle. Bardsley is set for scans ahead of his side’s trip to Newcastle- his omission could perhaps see John O’Shea move from the centre to right-back, with Matt Kilgallon coming into the heart of defence.

Glen Johnson has, this afternoon, become the fifth player to pull out of the England squad to face Holland. The right-back is said to have trained this morning but then reported an unspecified “minor problem“ and will head back to Anfield to be assessed.

Daniel Agger has ruled himself out of contention for Denmark’s game against Russia tomorrow. The centre-half is feared to have sustained a broken rib in the Carling Cup win over Cardiff and, although there has been no official confirmation of a definite absence, his withdrawal will give his Fantasy owners cause for concern, particularly with Liverpool’s double gameweek just around the corner.

Alan Hutton is making his way back to Aston Villa after pulling out of the Scotland squad to face Slovenia. The right-back is said to have suffered pain in the top of his hamstring and, after being assessed by the Scotland doctors, has been sent back to the midlands for further examination.

Elsewhere, a handful of players face extended travel periods this midweek. Javier Hernandez turns out for Mexico at 1am Thursday in a home clash against Colombia. With United not playing until Sunday, though, his Fantasy owners will be hopeful the forward will have enough recovery time to feature in the trip to White Hart Lane.

Victor Moses and Peter Odemwingie feature for Nigeria, as the Super Eagles travel to Rwanda in an African Cup of Nations qualifier on Wednesday. Wigan keeper Ali Al-Habsi plays for Oman in a crucial World Cup qualifier against Thailand at 9.30am Wednesday and should have enough in the tank to be ready for Saturday’s game with Swansea.

Bolton’s on-loan star Ryo Miyaichi is set for his Japan debut against Uzbekistan at 10.30 tomorrow morning. Mark Schwarzer faces a home game for Australia against Saudi Arabia- this kicks off at 09.30 tomorrow morning and, with Fulham not playing till Sunday, their keeper looks to have plenty recovery time ahead of the home game with Wolves.

Finally, a little domestic news. Alex McLeish has talked up the prospects of Andreas Weimann after the youngster produced a series of outstanding displays in the Villa reserves. Weimann has grabbed two hat tricks in his last three games, with McLeish describing him as “one of the most natural finishers I have seen for quite some time.”

With Darren Bent likely to be ruled out for the season after rupturing ankle ligaments in the weekend draw at Wigan, Robbie Keane back in the US after his loan deal finished and Gabby Agbonlahor having only scored once since Gameweek 7, McLeish is in dire need of a goalscorer. Weimann –priced at a mere 5.0- may be on course for a first-team start ahead of a run of games that reads (bla, FUL, BOL) over the next three gameweeks.

Arsene Wenger’s post-match comments on Theo Walcott after the 5-2 win over Spurs were revealing. Admitting he had considered subbing off the winger after a section of the crowd began to criticise Walcott’s performance, Wenger explained he kept faith, as he feels that the winger’s style of play is unique amongst the Arsenal squad:

I felt that he has the qualities that, considering the rest of the team, are highly needed. He is a player who can be straight and go behind the defenders – nobody else is like that. He is a very direct player, he can sometimes miss a first touch but considering the balance of the team I thought it was important to keep him in the side.

Wenger’s line of thinking, in spite of the calls for Walcott’s exclusion, suggests he will not bow to pressure and is likely to lead to reduced game time for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. With Gervinho still being eased back into action after his African Cup of Nations exertions, Yossi Benayoun was given the nod ahead of the youngster on the left and with Walcott vindicating Wenger’s decision with a double against their north London rivals, Oxlade Chamberlain’s 5.4% owners may be set for a testing time ahead.

Reports suggest Tom Cleverley may return to action next week for Man United. The midfielder limped out of the Europa League loss to Ajax on Thursday with an ankle problem but scans have revealed there is no serious problem, meaning Cleverley could come back against Atletico Bilbao in the next round of European action.

Carlos Tevez returned to action for Man City this afternoon, as the Argentine steps up his fitness after months on the sidelines. Tevez started for City’s reserves in the 3-1 defeat by Preston but failed to make any impact before being subbed off at half time.

Any advice on my team? I’m 5th in a league of 8 but only 60 odd points behind the leader.

    Vorm, Bogdan

    Caulker, Lescott, Simpson, Dawson, Walker

    McClean, Silva, Sinclair, Bale, Valencia

    Sturridge, Ba, Van Persie.

I have 2 FT’s this week and 0.2 in the bank.

    Any suggestions?

I wouldn't double up on Spurs defenders. Perhaps do Dawson to Shawcross?

Time to lose Sturridge? Possibly Sinclair too?

You need more ManU cover for wk 28 onwards, and possibly a Liverpool attacker/defender

Dawson needs to go too (Evans)?

I really want Rooney from GW28 onwards, but this only seems possible if I downgrade Silva to a cheaper midfielder.

        Was looking at Evans too.

True this. I've got 2 freebies saved, and Dyer (FINALLY), McClean and Dempsey are all due to rise soon so I'll make some cash on them. No need to rush anything.

    Start Kelly Caulker Enrique ??

Kelly vs Wolves - Wolves score lots of jammy goals
Caulker vs Wigan - Swansea aint good away from home
Enrique vs Arsenal - Liverpool defend tight but Arsenal have been smacking goals in for fun

I have no Lpool defenders at this time. I was planning to get Rooney in GW28 but may delay that by a week and get him in GW29 and get a Lpool defender for the double. Pretty certain on Skrtel over Enrique. So who to lose:

    Kompany or BAE

You're loving it, I recall you mentioning this. I am actually slowly initiating her into football, it has actually been hell, the amount of fights we have about whether I have a right to follow football 😉 but I think I am beginning to get football inside her head.

I suppose we should also consider captaincy options for the Liverpool DGW.

    Suarez
    Gerrard
    Adam
    Pool defender

Who do you guys think is the best captaincy option?

I will captain someone else in that GW. Will only have a Lpool defender - Skrtel. Infact now I am thinking of captaining Skrtel as I type this.

OK, planning to WC GW28, got 2 frees that I need to use up. I was looking to take a 1 week punt, but I'm pretty happy with my front 8, so my punt is looking incredibly boring.

    Mignolet Sorensen
    Richards Evans Simpson Kelly Caulker
    Silva Bale Dempsey Sess Siggy
    RVP Aguero Ba

I'm stuck at something like Sorensen to cheapie and Richards to Kompany, anyone got any flashes of inspiration?

Punt on a keeper over Sorensen, Schwarzer maybe. Maybe punt on replacing Siggy, if not Richards to Kompany, but it's hardly a punt, where's your spirit man? Let's have something worthy of being a punt.

How much do you have spare?

        0.2 spare.

I know it's boring, that's the problem! Only player I might possibly sell from my front 8 is Siggy, but who can I get for 5.2? Siggy's one of my big differentials, too.

But what if Pulis rotates keepers week by week? 😛

We don't know if Sorensen could still get his place back - I reckon it'll just take one bad goalkeeping performance and he'll change things, so neither of them are ideal.

I don't want to waste a transfer on one rotation prospect to another

Ok folks my team for this week

    Schwarzer

Taiwo (yes I know) Richards, Caulker

    Siggy, Bale, Dempsey (vc) Silva

    RvP, Aguero (c) Ba

    Migns, McLean, Santon, Evans

Should I play Santon and/or McLean, if so for whom. Am also thinking of saving my FT this week to allow for a GW28 double of

Aguero âž¡ Rooney (still don't want Suarez, DGW or not) and

    Richards âž¡ Skrtel

you don't think Newcastle's defensive frailities, coupled with Sunderland wanting to bounce back, coupled with it being a derby game means there's goals in that one?

Would ask for your thoughts on my transfers but you've already given me them, and any advice you give to me for GW28 is taken with a pinch of salt 😉

Rooney has pens and nailed-onness in his favour. Odem could easily be dropped, plus with Brunt and Long on the way back he'll be 3rd choice penalty taker.

Rooney will be well rested and fired up come WBA at home, and United will need him firing if we are to have any chance of overhauling City.

I think we need to play a defensive midfielder, which means Spearing tbh, a fluid 4-4-2 without Agger at CB is going to be defensively unsound IMO.

      Reina
      Johnson Skrtel Carra Enrique
      Gerrard Spearing
      Kuyt Suarez Downing
      Carroll

Would be my team, Bellamy played 60 minutes in the up and will play again for Wales so I don't think he can start

Kuyt is getting a bit disgruntled about not starting every week, he should definitely be ahead of henderson, though he wasn't in his best position on Sunday.

And Maxi is an interesting one, he does seem to deliver when he starts, but Kenny doesn't have a lot of faith in him..

is this for gw28? not sure why you'd rush those liverpool players in for arsenal at the expense of aguero home to bolton

Was looking back over the team of the decade there in the premier league and was thinking it would be hilarious to see a fantasy version of that - trying to pick the best performers every season and put them into a valid formation. Would it be possible to get them under the 100m mark? Clearly Ronaldo (07-08) would have to be in it and Lampard from the same year, 226 points but surely there would be some cheaper gems such as Charlie Adam last year that would make a few big guns possible?

Odemwingie last year etc, there's always a few cheapies.

Going by start of season prices of course 😉

But do you mean players who have played all decade? So cumulative points, or just one season from that decade?

The full decade means Gerrard, Giggs, Scholes, Terry the old guard, but the other ways more interesting.

Not having played before about 07 I can't think that far back in FPL terms

Isn't it amazing how many injuries crop up during international week. I reckon it's 3 fold the normal numbers of injury reports we get in any other gameweek.

Still doesn't look too appetising though. I will get Suarez and maybe a defender. I probably won't even (C) him.

By 'worth investing' do you mean more than one pool defender?

Remember, this is that team that doesn't score.

+1, Suarez is far too unreliable, as are Gerrard and Adam. Only Skrtel, GJ or JE (or Reina if you have funds) are worth investing in.

Only Liverpool defenders are worth it I think. Not going to touch Suarez, too many better options up front.

          Nope, would still captain Rooney.

Last year there was a double gameweek and whilst virtually everyone captained Charlie Adam, I captained Nani and outscored him.

A Liverpool defender does seem a safe (if dull) captaincy option - probably get at least 4 points, quite easily could get 8 (if one CS) or 12 (if 2) and that's before any attacking points

Podolski is 26 so clearly not passed it and has scored 15 in 20 league games this season.
He would be your main striker if RVP goes.

I'm quite tempted to triple up on Liverpool defence with Reine, GJ and JE for the rest of the season. Only dodgy GW is 37 which is at least at home.
Gives more flexibility with Spurs and Man U players in the front 8 also in case I end up wanting Valencia, Nani and Rooney or Adebayor, VdV and Bale at any point.
    Anybody else thinking the same?

am tempted by Reina, it all depends on whether I want Lamps in GW32 as that is where my spare cash is currently going. I am getting Skrtel, beyond that.

I wouldn't have Lamps why pay that much for a rotation risk who isn't a 90 min player a lot of the time either. Silva, Gerrard, Bale, Nani, Mata and possibly VdV if he starts looking good would all be ahead of Lamps for me. Squirtle is an option too - I'm just a fan of GJ.

Have you seen Chelsea's fixtures after GW32, Lamps could easily score well. I'm only considering it at this point, I will probs look to lose Clint in GW32 so if there is a player in form around then I will go with him, plan on having 2 FTs that week if possible.
