Pavel Pogrebnyak and Clint Dempsey run riot against Wolves as Terry Connor is served up a rude awakening at the Cottage. Shola Ameobi saves the day for Newcastle in a bad-tempered Tyne-Wear derby, while a return to form by Ashley Young helps United to the three points at under-strength Spurs:

Pavel Pogrebnyak
His impressive scoring streak continues for Fulham, with Wolves proving the Russian’s latest victim. Yesterday’s hat-trick means Pogrebnyak has scored in each of his three games since moving from Stuttgart in the January window and brings his tally to 5 in three games for the Cottagers. Considering Bobby Zamora scored 5 in fifteen games before his transfer to QPR, Pogrebnyak’s impact has clearly given Martin Jol’s side an added dimension up front. The maximum bonus has been duly delivered, taking the Russian’s Fantasy haul to 33 points in just three games and, with Villa, Swansea, Norwich and Bolton to come in the next five, the bandwagon is on its way; he’s already jumped 0.2 in price this weekend, as the transfers-in continue to snowball.

Clint Dempsey
Not to be outdone, Dempsey ended a three-game goalless streak by bagging a couple in the 5-0 win. The US international returned his fifth double-figure points haul of the season and, with 149 points, is second top scoring midfielder behind Gareth Bale, having overtaken David Silva on the back of yesterday’s performance. His away form is still something of a worry- Dempsey has returned 9 goals and 5 assists at the Cottage compared to 3 goals on the road but his home returns alone make him almost impossible to overlook, particularly with a strong upcoming schedule on the horizon.

Shola Ameobi
Newcastle’s forgotten forward came to the rescue just as defeat seems a certainty against bitter rivals Sunderland. While hopes were high of goal returns for Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse, the pair failed to produce, with the former ending the game on a score of -1 after a booking and missed penalty- doubly frustrating for those who selected him as vice-captain behind the absent Sergio Aguero this weekend. Ameobi’s knack of scoring against the Black Cats earned Alan Pardew’s side a vital point but in spite of his headline-grabbing goal, a role as impact sub looks his best way of harvesting points.

Ryan Taylor
His starting role on the right side of midfield continued yesterday, though a half-time reshuffle by Alan Pardew won’t have gone unnoticed by the out-of-position prospects’ Fantasy owners. With Newcastle struggling to get a hold of the game, Davide Santon was subbed off, as Taylor was shifted to his early-season role of left-back. On came Hatem Ben Arfa for an impressive second-half cameo as the home side upped the pressure- Pardew has food for thought, then, ahead of next week’s trip to Arsenal, with question marks perhaps once again raised against Taylor’s likely starting position.

Stephane Sessegnon
The Black Cats midfielder received a straight red card for violent conduct after catching Cheik Tiote with an arm and will now serve a three-match ban. With Sunderland still involved in the FA Cup, Sessegnon will miss the next two league games, against Liverpool and Blackburn, before returning in Gameweek 29 for the home clash with QPR. His absence poses his 24% Fantasy owners plenty questions, with many surely set to off-load Sessegnon, affording a break-up of the identikit midfields we’ve seen over the last few gameweeks.

Nicklas Bendtner
Back in the Black Cats starting XI for the first time since Gameweek 21, the big Dane opened the scoring at Newcastle with a coolly despatched spot-kick. Bendtner’s game time has been blighted by injury since Martin O’Neill’s arrival, with groin, ankle and facial injuries affording him just six starts under the new manager. He’s returned 2 goals and 2 assists in those six starts, though; a decent, if hardly prolific, haul. With Sessegnon now sidelined and Fraizer Campbell continuing to be eased back into action, Bendtner looks nailed-on to lead the line in the short-term; with yesterday’s game also confirming he’s number one for penalty duties, he’ set to be a crucial figure for Sunderland over the next couple of gameweeks, at least.

Wayne Rooney
Forced out last week due to a throat infection, the forward returned with the opener to continue his recent goalscoring form. Rooney has now grabbed 5 goals in his last three games for United and seems to be stepping up in performance as the season enters the final third. With (WBA, wol, FUL, bla, QPR) up next, Sir Alex Ferguson’s side are set for heavy Fantasy investment, as managers juggle budgets in order to rid themselves of the likes of Sergio Aguero for the in-form United forward.

Ashley Young
With Ryan Giggs benched for the trip to Spurs, Young was given the chance on United’s left at the Lane. He played a part in all of the visitors’ goals, bagging a brace and assist in the 3-1 win and served a reminder of his potential ahead of his side’s superb upturn in fixtures. Young has largely been a huge Fantasy disappointment this term; quick out the blocks in the first five gameweeks, he’s been virtually anonymous since; indeed, yesterday was just the second time he has found the net all season. With Sir Alex Ferguson admitting he expects Antonio Valencia to be back in time for United’s Europa League away trip to Ahletic Bilbao on March 15, Young could be set for the role of bench-warmer once again, with his game time likely to diminish once the reliable Ecuadorian is available.

After a hard fought away win in the depths of Ukraine, I'm up to second in group G, with another away game in Porto this week - but can I overturn the 4 point home advantage after a hit or two? 😛

I dunno, his goals to shots ratio reminds me of Maloudas last season. Its just too good to be sustained, but from the little I've seen of Pogrebnyak he gets into good positions and is good in the air and on the deck. I think he is a 10-15 goal a season striker, but he has started brilliantly.

yeah, you're right... but as you say, his goals to shots ratio is so good it might be worth a punt... and fulham's fixtures look pretty good... however, you reckon he will outscore for example holt the next 3 or 4 fixtures?

Ba missed a penalty so understandably people are pissed off and twitchy about him. He is still a class act though, and should still get some meaningful scores before the end of the season.

However we have looked poor the last few weeks, so much depends on whether we can halt the slide. Yeah Arsenal away is a tough match, but there is still a reasonable chance of him nabbing a goal.

Basically its a big call and I havent a clue how it will go. 🙂

To be honest, the missed penalty is not effecting my decision. I was all set on doing Walters-->Pilks, but him only 69min and 45min in his last 2 is worrying me.

That and the fact that New is playing Arsenal and NOR is playing WIGAN/new/WOLVES is making me think Holt might be a better option.

Other option is to just sit tight and not take a hit. Need to sort out this Richards debacle in my team.

No offence but the "Ba isnt right since ACON" cliche is another one of those virus ideas that is rife on the site. And its nonsense, he scored on his first game back. The team itself itself is on a poor run and obviously that affects Ba's output.

Its nothing to do with Ba in the ACON.

The team was on fire before he went away. We arent producing all over the pitch now, and that inevitably affects a strikers performance.

Not trying to be patronising or anything, its just that I've watched nearly every game this season so I have a decent overview. Ba is still getting into good positions, possibly a factor could be that he works better with a physical target man such as Ameobi or Best rather than Cisse. But the problem isnt from Ba.

Either way its irrelevant, whether the root cause is from Ba or the team his FPL output is affected. But I disagree that its due to the ACON, that's just people jumping to conclusions based on what happened to Drogba t'other year

Ba let me down badly this week. But I was still impressed with his play and he had quite a few goal attempts. Trouble is for me is that I got him in for two good home games and he delivered nothing. There is such competition for forward slots and money needed to invest in Man Utd players that I'm afraid for me it will be bye bye Ba. I may pop back and hire him again another day.

Pogrebnyak was so awful for VfB Stuttgart this season that I'm not sure how long this goalscoring run will last. Mind you, he wasn't getting any chances created for him by the Stuttgart midfield, whereas Fulham under Jol are playing to his strengths.

Aye its another case of Ryan Taylor or Clint Dempsey. Players I dont particularly rate highly but are punishing me in FPL.

73 points whilst having Ba as captain - not bad. Hindsight is a lovely thing but Dempsey or RvP would have made much more sense as vice captain.

One more thing, looks like everyones going to be getting Ashley Young in for Man United coverage now. Whats going on with Valencia? He's dropped to 7.7 now, when is he expected back and when he is back, will he be starting?

Young as cover is silly. I have Rooney now with Valencia back soon, Young is too much of a risk. Aguero to Rooney will be the most popular transfer this week I think. I've held Valencia this far so I think I'll keep him if he's only going to miss one more game.

Even if it means downgrading Silva to Yaya. These are my options.

              A. Mignolet (Krul)
              G.Johnson Enrique Evans (Senderos Kaboul)
              Bale Silva Dempsey Taarabt (McLean)
              Rooney RVP Holt

              B. Mignolet (Krul)
              Enrique Richards Evans (Senderos Kaboul)
              Bale Yaya Dempsey Taarabt (McLean)

This season, I'm learning, is all about Form Over Fixtures. So my 3rd forward dilemma for GW28 is this: Pog has the form (5 in 3, scoring in each game), but the Yak has the fixture (a very shoddy-looking Wolves).

    So - Pog or Yak?

Well..... looking at one of these:

        a) Aguero, Silva & Taiwo > Rooney, Gerrard & Enrique
        b) Aguero, Bale & Taiwo > Rooney, Adam & Enrique
        c) Aguero, Pilkington & Taiwo > Rooney, Surman, Enrique
        d) Aguero, Ba & Silva > Rooney, Suarez & Gerrard
        e) Aguero, Ba & Silva > Rooney, Suarez & Young
        f) Aguero, Ba & Pilkington> Rooney, Suarez & Surman.

Got 2 frees so would be for 4 points. As you can see i'm definitely getting Rooney for Aguero, just not sure who else. Need another decent defender really so i should probably look to get Enrique before Suarez despite the temptation of RVP-Rooney-Suarez front line.

Hopefully i wouldn't be swapping one problem for another with C, Lambert's midfield selections have been a bit of a lottery this season. Surman appears to be in favour at the moment but who knows how long that will last!? Could really do with some Norwich fans on here, i have little clue what's going on there

Yeah you were really unlucky with Pilkington. Everytime it looks like he's nailed on Lambert benches or subs him. Can you afford Miyachi or Mark Davies?

I'd have 4.8 to spend on a midfielder to replace Pilkington after doing Taiwo & Aguero > Enrique & Rooney so i could afford Davies but not Miyachi. Unsurprisingly there's not a great choice at that price. Moses, Davies & Surman are about it.
