We bring a somewhat painful Gameweek to a close, reliving the revival of another of United’s wingmen, the quiet ascent of Martin Jol’s Cottagers and the possible fallout from Roberto Mancini’s teamsheet…

The Player

Despite the absence of Sergio Aguero and David Silva, we weren’t short of performers stamping a lasting impression on the Gameweek. Pavel Pogrebnyak’s hat-trick offered further evidence that Martin Jol has unearthed a gem – a true dark horse talent which Fantasy managers have been quick to pounce on following a superb hat-trick in the mauling of Wolves at the Cottage.

Similarly, Gylfi Siggurdsson’s sublime brace at Wigan confirmed the classy Icelander as a prime budget asset, capable of translating his propensity to gain assists and goals with Reading in the Championship to the top flight, having been left out in the cold at Hoffenheim. Despite that, we’ve opted for Ashley Young as our player of the Gameweek, having announced his return to form with a display of true quality in United’s 3-1 win at White Hart Lane, capped by two goals – the second of which reminiscent of a player at the peak of his powers.

An upturn in performance from the former Villa man could be hugely significant for United and Fantasy managers. Bizarrely, with Antonio Valencia and Nani vying for the flank roles, Young and his rivals have appeared to shift in and out of form in a coordinated fashion, ensuring that Sir Alex Ferguson has always had at least one of his wide men firing and providing a supply line. With Valencia stricken by injury and Nani displaying a frustrating inconsistency once again, it’s fallen to Young to step up.

The brace at Spurs took Young to just four in the league for the season. Sunday was, however, the first time he has played 90 minutes for United in the league since Gameweek 13; in a campaign blighted by injury, Young has made just 12 starts. That considered, his goal return, with eight assists and eight Fantasy Premier League bonus suddenly looks a reasonable tally. There’s surely more to come; United have the fixtures to present Young with a platform to book his place, not only in the England squad, but in the starting XI for Euro 2012 and he will surely be aiming to end the season with a flurry of goals and assists to cement his status.

While Ferguson has assured us that Valencia is due to return for the trip to Wolves in Gameweek 29, it seems likely that he’ll battle with Nani for a start on the right while Young is given a serious run on the left-flank. With three goals and two assist in his last four appearances in all competitions, Young looks in the mood to work in tandem with Wayne Rooney and help steer United’s title tilt.

The Team

Slowly but surely, Martin Jol has produced a winning formula at Craven Cottage. Based on an rich array of attacking players, now supplemented by the defensive talents of Mahamadou Diarra, Jol has masterminded three consecutive victories, with Russian striker Pavel Pogrebnyak the catalyst for the burst in form.

Five goals in those three matches have seen Pogrebnyak become the hottest Fantasy property since Demba Ba’s return from the African Cup of Nations prompted huge ownership growth and a continued price rise. Pogrebnyak is on his way to achieving similar heights – already we’ve seen his value increased by 0.2, with an additional rise imminent later this week.

At 6.2, Pogrebnyak is undoubtedly superb value if he can maintain his incredible run of form. With Villa, Swansea and Norwich amongst the next four opponents, there’s every chance that the goals will continue to flow. The only caveat is, of course, the form of Clint Dempsey – Jol’s other major goal threat and scorer of another brace in Sunday’s rout.

With the likes of Rooney, Robin Van Persie and a double dose of Luis Suarez presenting a powerful trio this Gameweek, it’s hard to see a place for Pogrebnyak with an away trip at Villa, when Dempsey is surely already installed in many a midfield.

Pogrebnyak is the spearhead of a Fulham outfit emerging as the form side in the Premier League right now, while Dempsey continues to enjoy his most profitable Fantasy season, but there’s also talent elsewhere to consider.

Mark Schwarzer is a proven Fantasy performer in goal, protected by the imposing Brede Hangeland at the back. The Norwegian is the one player who has disappointed so far, failing to find the net in the league, having fetched half a dozen goals last term. Aaron Hughes, now seemingly restored to the back four, is now the viable budget alternative, providing value at 4.5 in the FPL while Stephen Kelly recovers from a thigh injury.

The Talking Point

When news of Roberto Mancini’s teamsheet broke just after 2pm on Saturday, the waves of discontent spread throughout the Fantasy fraternity. The after effects of that decision, coupled with the mechanics of the FPL vice captain, were felt by many: some fared well from the twist, others felt the burn of a red arrow and were left scorning at the City boss and their expensive bench warmers.

It’s enough to make Fantasy managers turn their back on City’s assets – a knee jerk reaction, but, in the cold light of day, perhaps not a huge error of judgment.

There’s little doubt that City face the tougher run-in compared to their rivals on the red side of Manchester. Five home games remain, compared to United’s six and the potentially decisive clash with United makes up one of those home matches, together with the visit of Chelsea, possibly boosted by a change in management, in Gameweek 29.

When you consider that both Silva and Aguero suffer a significant dip in returns on the road, they are left with home games against Sunderland, West Brom and QPR on the final day as potential big profit Gameweeks. The title could be won and lost by Gameweek 38, however, leaving Mancini free to rotate his troops against a QPR outfit possibly battling for survival.

In the short-term, while the defence has kept an incredible seven clean sheets in eight league games, the fixture list has been kind to them in that run. Trips to Swansea, Stoke and Arsenal will provide three very different tests of their defensive resolve. Feasibly, we could see Mancini’s men concede in all three, while the aforementioned home clash with Chelsea could also see the home copybook blotted.

Reduced defensive returns could be on the cards, then, while Silva and Aguro may continue to struggle on the road. In comparison, United have a smooth passage into Easter, with the City trip in Gameweek 36 their only real major test in front of them for the rest of the season. That could see a revolution of Fantasy assets – prompted by the deep cut dealt by Mancini’s teamsheet.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I think I'm now in a position at 150k where it's now or never, I either stick with the unimpressive and injury ravaged squad I have now, or go for it and try to catch some movers. I know by using the DGW I can both clear out some players that are going nowhere and get the benefits of double points - with good fixtures for Liverpool later. It's a risk, and one I wouldn't take if my team was in good shape, but it isn't

You really don't want 3 Liverpool players in your team, it'll be hard to shift them. Just Suarez for me. Adam is overpriced and two attacking Liverpool players is asking for trouble.

If my punt fails I will just bail on Suarez and bring in Ade or Pog. I don't really think having 2 pool defenders can fail with the fixture list. Evans, BAE and Caulker will provide a saftey net Just in case.

Well Chelsea play FA, Tot play FA, City and Utd play Europa and Ars plays UCL. I am gonna swallow that 0.1m of Rooney rise and won't pull the trigger tonight. Anything could happen. Also Rooney is injury prone u know? I miss 0.1m of my plan, well I am gonna make it 0.2m. Too bad I slept on Kun rising previous Friday and Valencia this Friday. My advice is to hold with transfers. It is not early in the season, mistakes are crucial in this part of the season.

Can someone please explain to me why you would choose Skrtel over J-Enrique or vice-versa? I want to grab one for Richards this week. JE is cheaper, and I could def use the funds, but on the other hand my rival in first place has him, so Skrtel could be a differential. Their FPL stats look very similar. Help?

Skrtel missed two games at the start of the season so he does have a marginally better PPG than Enrique, tbh I think the difference is small though. Mainly threat from getting on the end of set pieces.

that's a really good point, cards killed me in the NU-Sun game. But I just checked history and Skrtel only 2 cards all season, one yellow one red. Both against Tottenham interestingly. J-E one yellow all season. I think I am going with Skrtel, for the differential in my minileague.

    Memos to self next season:

    - SAVE THE WC TIL AFTER JANUARY
    - Form > team > fixtures
    - Never bring players in for a DGW who you can't face having after it
    - If you don't like your team for the week hits are okay to fix it
    - SPEND MORE ON DEFENCE
    - Get defending defenders before worrying about attacking defenders
    - Wingers = assist machines
    - Lone strikers at good teams
    - NOT NAILED ON? NOT IN MY TEAM
    - No one is due
    - Knee jerk more often, don't live in fear
    - Never miss a deadline!!
    - Ignore price changes unless they stop you getting the players you want
    - Everton. Just. No.

If I get Suarez now i'll still swap him out for Rooney next week. So it would appear the obvious choice to get Rooney.. my gut is telling me different. Balls.

Leading get Rooney, trailing get Suarez. Rooney should score moderately this week, whereas Suarez will either do nothing or go mental.

Obvious point, but the season doesn't end this weekend. If you are going to transfer Saurez out the next week for Rooney, then why force yourself into that transfer the following week? What if the week goes by and you need to make another tranfer due to injury or some other pressing concern? Then you are trying to fix that problem AND you are stuck with the Saurez problem.

Watch the captain's poll later this week: there will be lots of differing opinions as to who to armband, including Roon Pig.

For what it is worth, I would be happy with a RvP Roon Ba front going forward.

If getting Suarez over Rooney is going to force you into another transfer in one weeks time, then you'll either be unable to make a transfer, lets call it transfer X, or you'll have to take a 4 point hit to do Suarez to Rooney, and transfer X

So if you go for Suarez this week he has to outscore Rooney by more than 4 points, or Suarez has one week to give you more benefit, than the benefit you'd get out of transfer X.

If you can follow that drivel

              I get ya.

I'm sick of thinking about it so i just got Rooney about 10 minutes ago.

I figure it's Suarez +2 vs Everton against Rooney vs WBA. I still think Suarez will outscore him this week but there's a danger of being 0.1 off affording the transfer next week and having to take that 4 point hit.

Main thing that made up my mind was having stuck with Suarez for so long earlier this season and seeing him do nothing week after week so if he goes mental next gw i may cry 🙂

RVP (or RIP to my season). Had him early doors, sold him in my GW6 wildcard, had my laptop stolen by some crazy woman & missed him @ 11.9, watched him deliver & rise, deliver & rise. Got him in January, too little too late. I know, excuses, excuses (worse than Fergie/Wenger). Last 11 games & I'm still placed but need to get radical (it's 100 point gap to 1st place in my cash league), in reality I've given up but would appreciate any lightbulb ideas on what's been a very identi-kit team season. Transfers done this week, current team:

    Vorm (Krul)
    Skrtel, Kompany, Evans (Senderos, Caulker)
    Silva, Dempsey, Bale, Moses (McClean)
Suarez (c), Ba, Van Persie (vc)

I'm thinking Fat Frank time. Any thoughts?

100 points isn't impossible. Take a few risks like Suarez captain and you never know. I was 120 a few weeks, am now 85 behind despite finishing outside the top 2 million last week, had I done better I'd be looking at only 50 points behind in about 5 weeks.

Basically, don't make decisions based on who someone else has, just go with the team you think will get you the most points.

With regards to Rooney/Nani issue, Nani hasn't been on fire but he's still up there with the best in points terms. Tough call but having both definitely isn't out of the question.

RVP is just a smart investment, and so is Rooney. But roll back to the first 4 GWs and people on this site were anti RVP because Arsenal were bad and he wasn't scoring... the people that ignored it were the ones that profited. Rooney has been pushed on here for fixtures a few times this season too, sometimes it has paid off, other times he is rested and goes a few weeks w/o a point. That's why nobody is a must, sure, they might have odds on to score, but it doesn't mean that they will, and, even if they do, they might not be the top scorer for the week.

Agree completely, my comment was more in jest than anything. Personally, I think Nani will be more central to Utd's title push than Rooney, so I'd plump for him if it's an either/or situation. They just don't have anyone else in the team like him.

Thinking about an 8 point hit tonight.

Richards>Skrtel (I may put this one off)
    Senderos>Evans
Silva>5.6 or less midfielder (probably Mark Davies)
    Zamora>Rooney.

Thoughts? My worries are taking an 8 point hit and not getting rid of Sorensen or Valencia.

Has anybody ever had this problem before? :

In the Gameweek just passed, I decided to play Vorm instead of Krul, and I was certain that I had put Vorm into my team and Krul onto my bench. Then when I first looked at my points on Saturday, after the deadline, I noticed Krul was my goalkeeper. I was slightly annoyed but came to the conclusion that I must have just forgotten to swap them over, as I was going to play Krul until I changed my mind...

Just now, I made my transfers for next week to beat the Rooney price rise, went to my team, Krul was in goal with Vorm on the bench, left over from last week, I made a couple of changes, put Vorm in for Krul, changed my (C) and (V), changed the order of my subs and pressed confirm. Before anyone asks, I definitely, definitely made these changes.

Then when the page refreshed, my (C) and (V) were on their new players, my substitutes were in the desired order, but Krul was back in my starting line-up! So I am beginning to think it is possible that I in fact DID make the change ahead of Gameweek 27, but a glitch with the website caused me to unknowingly play Krul, leaving me with 3 points less. The issue seems to be solved now, as I made the change (again), and pressed confirm (again), and now (at last) Vorm is in my starting line-up.

I would just like to reiterate one final time that it is 100% definite that I put Krul on my bench when I made the changes a few minutes ago, and I am 100% serious. So has anyone else had a similar problem? Is it possibly worth an email to FPL?

In the mad times at the GW24 deadline or something when everyone was WCing I remember they were still letting us transfer at 7:32 or something when the deadline was 7:30. I dimly recall changes to the team might not have worked on the first try and I tried again, how much of this was a genuine error and how much was specific connection problems I don't know.

Do remember someone said earlier FPL was briefly down, it might be a connection thing.

Next time you could try screenshots with the times. FPL should keep records of the state of your team every time you change anything so if it really came to it they could look at it and try to reconcile it with you memory.

Doubt it would go anywhere though.

Its the kind of thing that I doubt will happen again. I'm not fussed about the 3 points, I'm ranked around 250K, its hardly going to cost me the no.1 spot, but if there's a glitch in their code somewhere that could do the same to other teams then I would want to bring it to their attention.

Chances are though that I'm probably going crazy and should go to bed 🙂

No all of the instances given here are on my laptop, although I have had problems making transfers on the Android app in the past, that's unrelated to this problem.

OK - after agonizing over it for two weeks and examining it from every angle, including one of opposition to having anything but a Liverpool defender, I've done it. Transfers confirmed, 8pt hit.

    Valencia > Adam
    Aguero > Suarez
    Taiwo > Skrtel

    Probable team:

    Schwarzer
    Skrtel Richards Evans
    Bale Dempsey Adam Silva
    RVP (C) Suarez Ba

    Bench: Sorenson, McClean Kelly Santon

I'm not mad enough to do Suarez (C) as I'm punting with the team not the captain... not mad enough yet.

Wowsers. That is some serious faith in the LIV attack. I'm going with Suarez(c) [Oh yeah!] and 2 LIV defenders I think. Hopefully they repay our faith!!

Wow Suarez (C). Dangerous talk Jinswick. See I clearly have punted heavily on the LIV attack already, I can't bring myself to punt to the point where I could actually reduce returns from the golden goose (RVP to us mortals).

Desperate times, desperate measures, but I do have three heavyweight mids (and an able deputy mid) to back up 2-game Adam, two heavyweight defenders alongside Skrtel and I'm hoping at the least to get a goal from RVP if not Ba. Not all hinging on the Pool players, but they need to convert their chances!

Yeah I read that - still it took him 27 games to rack up 4 yellows right? So I just need him to avoid a yellow in the first match, with an average of 1 yellow every 6 games. It's not ideal but there's no one else in their midfield I'd touch, he has dead ball duties locked down and is a consistent assister.

Good luck, double defensive coverage is a big one. Losing Bale for now is a big gamble too - but his role does look diminished in the current 2-striker system. You're not going Skrtel (C) or anything are you? 😀

Nope! RVP or Rooney (c). Bale will come back in GW31, Adam to Valencia (if he's fit) next week.

Sensible. For me I've given myself options on what to do next based on how my players do. If Suarez ignites, I'll get Rooney in for Ba and sacrifice Silva or Bale for a promising 5-6er. If he doesn't I'll get Rooney in for Suarez and downgrade Silva to Valencia perhaps.

You too. No risk no reward but to go withoit Rooney is a HUGEEEEE gamble. This weekend will be the most interesting GW in ages as The BIG 8 has finally broken up and teams are diversified again.

Yep I can't wait, real FPL is back!!
Being without Rooney is in itself a huge gamble but all you can do is try to make each position in your team be filled by a worthwhile player. I'm just betting on West Brom playing anything like the team they've been the last 3 weeks - tough.

Memos to self next season (carrying on from Isacki's post):

    - Time a WC around fixtures not an international gameweek
    - Form > team > fixtures
    - Never bring players in for a DGW who you can’t face having after it
    - DONT IGNORE PLAYERS IN GREAT FORM
    - If you don’t like your team for the week hits are okay to fix it
    - Wingers = assist machines
    - Lone strikers at good teams
    - NOT NAILED ON? NOT IN MY TEAM
    - Knee jerk more often, don’t live in fear
    - Ignore price changes unless they stop you getting the players you want
    - Don't be over reliant on rotating players
    - LISTEN TO MY GUT MORE THAN OTHERS ADVICE
