We bring a somewhat painful Gameweek to a close, reliving the revival of another of United’s wingmen, the quiet ascent of Martin Jol’s Cottagers and the possible fallout from Roberto Mancini’s teamsheet…

The Player

Despite the absence of Sergio Aguero and David Silva, we weren’t short of performers stamping a lasting impression on the Gameweek. Pavel Pogrebnyak’s hat-trick offered further evidence that Martin Jol has unearthed a gem – a true dark horse talent which Fantasy managers have been quick to pounce on following a superb hat-trick in the mauling of Wolves at the Cottage.

Similarly, Gylfi Siggurdsson’s sublime brace at Wigan confirmed the classy Icelander as a prime budget asset, capable of translating his propensity to gain assists and goals with Reading in the Championship to the top flight, having been left out in the cold at Hoffenheim. Despite that, we’ve opted for Ashley Young as our player of the Gameweek, having announced his return to form with a display of true quality in United’s 3-1 win at White Hart Lane, capped by two goals – the second of which reminiscent of a player at the peak of his powers.

An upturn in performance from the former Villa man could be hugely significant for United and Fantasy managers. Bizarrely, with Antonio Valencia and Nani vying for the flank roles, Young and his rivals have appeared to shift in and out of form in a coordinated fashion, ensuring that Sir Alex Ferguson has always had at least one of his wide men firing and providing a supply line. With Valencia stricken by injury and Nani displaying a frustrating inconsistency once again, it’s fallen to Young to step up.

The brace at Spurs took Young to just four in the league for the season. Sunday was, however, the first time he has played 90 minutes for United in the league since Gameweek 13; in a campaign blighted by injury, Young has made just 12 starts. That considered, his goal return, with eight assists and eight Fantasy Premier League bonus suddenly looks a reasonable tally. There’s surely more to come; United have the fixtures to present Young with a platform to book his place, not only in the England squad, but in the starting XI for Euro 2012 and he will surely be aiming to end the season with a flurry of goals and assists to cement his status.

While Ferguson has assured us that Valencia is due to return for the trip to Wolves in Gameweek 29, it seems likely that he’ll battle with Nani for a start on the right while Young is given a serious run on the left-flank. With three goals and two assist in his last four appearances in all competitions, Young looks in the mood to work in tandem with Wayne Rooney and help steer United’s title tilt.

The Team

Slowly but surely, Martin Jol has produced a winning formula at Craven Cottage. Based on an rich array of attacking players, now supplemented by the defensive talents of Mahamadou Diarra, Jol has masterminded three consecutive victories, with Russian striker Pavel Pogrebnyak the catalyst for the burst in form.

Five goals in those three matches have seen Pogrebnyak become the hottest Fantasy property since Demba Ba’s return from the African Cup of Nations prompted huge ownership growth and a continued price rise. Pogrebnyak is on his way to achieving similar heights – already we’ve seen his value increased by 0.2, with an additional rise imminent later this week.

At 6.2, Pogrebnyak is undoubtedly superb value if he can maintain his incredible run of form. With Villa, Swansea and Norwich amongst the next four opponents, there’s every chance that the goals will continue to flow. The only caveat is, of course, the form of Clint Dempsey – Jol’s other major goal threat and scorer of another brace in Sunday’s rout.

With the likes of Rooney, Robin Van Persie and a double dose of Luis Suarez presenting a powerful trio this Gameweek, it’s hard to see a place for Pogrebnyak with an away trip at Villa, when Dempsey is surely already installed in many a midfield.

Pogrebnyak is the spearhead of a Fulham outfit emerging as the form side in the Premier League right now, while Dempsey continues to enjoy his most profitable Fantasy season, but there’s also talent elsewhere to consider.

Mark Schwarzer is a proven Fantasy performer in goal, protected by the imposing Brede Hangeland at the back. The Norwegian is the one player who has disappointed so far, failing to find the net in the league, having fetched half a dozen goals last term. Aaron Hughes, now seemingly restored to the back four, is now the viable budget alternative, providing value at 4.5 in the FPL while Stephen Kelly recovers from a thigh injury.

The Talking Point

When news of Roberto Mancini’s teamsheet broke just after 2pm on Saturday, the waves of discontent spread throughout the Fantasy fraternity. The after effects of that decision, coupled with the mechanics of the FPL vice captain, were felt by many: some fared well from the twist, others felt the burn of a red arrow and were left scorning at the City boss and their expensive bench warmers.

It’s enough to make Fantasy managers turn their back on City’s assets – a knee jerk reaction, but, in the cold light of day, perhaps not a huge error of judgment.

There’s little doubt that City face the tougher run-in compared to their rivals on the red side of Manchester. Five home games remain, compared to United’s six and the potentially decisive clash with United makes up one of those home matches, together with the visit of Chelsea, possibly boosted by a change in management, in Gameweek 29.

When you consider that both Silva and Aguero suffer a significant dip in returns on the road, they are left with home games against Sunderland, West Brom and QPR on the final day as potential big profit Gameweeks. The title could be won and lost by Gameweek 38, however, leaving Mancini free to rotate his troops against a QPR outfit possibly battling for survival.

In the short-term, while the defence has kept an incredible seven clean sheets in eight league games, the fixture list has been kind to them in that run. Trips to Swansea, Stoke and Arsenal will provide three very different tests of their defensive resolve. Feasibly, we could see Mancini’s men concede in all three, while the aforementioned home clash with Chelsea could also see the home copybook blotted.

Reduced defensive returns could be on the cards, then, while Silva and Aguro may continue to struggle on the road. In comparison, United have a smooth passage into Easter, with the City trip in Gameweek 36 their only real major test in front of them for the rest of the season. That could see a revolution of Fantasy assets – prompted by the deep cut dealt by Mancini’s teamsheet.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

        2) Would you play Surman (WIG) or Siggy (MCY) this week?

Well, possibly only Surman this week. Not sure Swansea will get much past MCY and NOR score goals and have Wigan at home.

Problem with playing Migs is it kind of restricts my returns. Sunderland will lose this game IMO without Sess, and whilst Bolton are poor, they're not that bad at home and QPR are pretty dire right now as well.

Sunderland will defend more without Sess. Only restricts your returns if Bolton get a clean sheet although Bog will get saves. Seems a Bog/Surman combo & hope Siggy doesn't do much as he is becoming popular.

Hey guys my current team is

    Lindegaard Vorm
    BAE Enrique Evans Williamson Kompany
    Silva Sess Morrison Dempsey Bale
    Yak Ba RVP
got 1 FT and 2.4 in the bank

had planned to do Williamson->Skrtel but after this gameweek liked the look of Pogrebnyak and a man u midfeilder (don't have enough for rooney). am now looking at doing Sess->Valencia, BAE->Skrtel and Yak->Pogrebnyak for a 8 point hit. Should i stick with my original plan or change to my new one?
    Help very much appreciated, cheers.

You don't really wanna be taking hits for defenders even in DGW when the fixtures aren't that good. You already have some cover with Enrique so Skrtel would have to keep at least 1 CS for you to better BAE just playing the 90 mins. Add to that BAE can deliever attacking returns making the hit even more risky.

For those that are thinking Saurez, his total shots the past few weeks has been poor compared to previously... I have already got him in as hard to resist a DGW punt but since his return he is not shooting as much.

All GW - Total Shots: 75 On Target: 31 Set Piece Attempts: 7 Hit Woodwork: 4 Blocked Shots: 14
Last 4 GW Total Shots: 6 On Target: 3 Set Piece Attempts: 0 Hit Woodwork: 1 Blocked Shots: 2

I am just worried I have made the same mistake I did earlier in the year by watching him play and thinking "his time has to come doesn't it... And what kills me is if he does not pass to a team mate with an open goal...then he starts talking to himself. Dickhead.

          Sorry.

not a fan of his racism and stuff like that but i wouldn't say he cheated. I think he read the situation intelligently and was punished according to the laws of the game. Ghana had a PK to win the game which they missed and then they still could have one it in penalties but didn't. it was quite a genius move actually. and i don't see how it's any different than fouling a player in basketball when you're down in hope that they miss their free throws so you can win the game. similar idea

He showed what he was made of when he walked off crying and looking like he was sorry, only to turn around and suddenly laugh and jump for joy when Gyan missed the penalty.

Suarez and intelligent in the same sentence? LOL

If that happened when England played another team in the WC and they were knocked out the outcry would have been much bigger. Imagine that happening in the CL final and Barca lose because Rooney blocked a certain goal with his hand? The Irish weren't to happy when Henry knocked them out in a similar way and Maradona is still hated by many of what he did in the WC.

Yes the rules are flawed in that way I suppose, but the guy is a doos.

thats true i guess. but don't you think if that were you you'd be disappointed to get sent off but then happy that what you did saved your team? also it could have been instinctive... just saying

            hahaha touche

the outrcy was pretty big for ghana though! but i see your point. if barca had lost because of that I would have been quite frustrated and mad but i dont know if i would have called rooney a cheater. would be more frustrated at their failure to slot home a game winning penalty and then their failure again in the shootout. would be more heartbreaking than anything. however I sympathize with the Irish! the difference here is that Henry was not punished within the rules of the game. the call was missed. thats the key difference between the two in my mind. suarez was punished within the rules of the game and ghana still had a chance to win it whereas Henry was not punished within the laws of the game so the Irish did not have their fair chance to win it

and how else would you change the rules? i can't see any other way to write them that would make them more fair than they already are...

I know just saying. I heard on the radio on my way home yesterday that eventually it seems Fifa will introduce some Hawkeye / goal line technology soon.

That of course would not have made a difference in the Suarez/Ghana game but it could have changed the Eng/Germany WC fixture when Lampard scored off the bar and the goal was not given. If I recall the game was still in the balance when that happened.

I would rather have Suarez or any other player that deny a team a definite goal by blatantly sticking his hand out (and the Ghana incident was one) to stay on the pitch. Why must the other team still run the risk of missing a penalty? They have already "scored". Give them the goal. Something similar to a penalty try in rugby.

Ignore me. I'm just bitter. LOL

yeah i've heard similar things. yeah you're correct about that one. england coudl have gone through if they'd gotten that call correct.

ohh hmmm interesting idea. not familiar with rugby but it sounds similar to a goal tending (i think its called) in basketball, yes? not a bad idea actually. would be pretty difficult to get FIFA to change that though i recon...

I'm anticipating an exciting match at Old Trafford on Sunday.

WBA's form is excellent - they produce chances for fun, and have also tightened up their defence.

United however, showed us two things. 1, they are not playing very well (ref nor + tot); 2, they win even though they get outplayed.

    Looking forward to it.

I'd like to slightly contradict you on WBA's form, in the last 7 they've won 4, drawn 1 and lost 2 , impressive but if we look slightly more closely at the results one can get a much better perspective, the first match they won was against stoke when stoke was on a losing streak, then they've won the last 3, one against wolves(who were/are pants), one against Sunderland(very impressive) and finally the last match versus Chelsea who have looked tepid to say the least in recent weeks, so barring Sunderland I don't think any of their results have been amazing or out of the blue, and united have won 5 out of the last 6 against arsenal, liverpool and tottenham, United is at home at O.T as well, I really think it's going to be a 3-1 or 3-0.

Shambles of a week but have two free transfers to clean up the mess, of which the Sess red is part. Threw a real spanner in the works and I'd intended to go from Aguero to Rooney and Luiz to someone a little cheaper. Should I consider Suarez instead and bring in a mid for Sess? Should I sit Sess and deal with him in WC? Other suggestions?

Morning folks. Just thought I'd offer my opinions on some of the debates that have been raging on here since the weekend.

    1) Aguero or Rooney. I did this very move last night. Aguero always has the potential to grab a huge score, but has not done so for weeks, plus he doesn't perform away and as we have seen there is the threat of Mario, Dzeko and soon,Tevez, to think about. Rooney is United's key player, is nailed on, in form, on pens, will take some free-kicks and is virtually guaranteed to start every game when fit and has a better run of fixtures. (Plus as a United fan I find it much easier to cheer a Rooney goal than an Aguero one) So IMO Roone.

    2) Ba or Suarez. Almost did this very move. But, aside from the moral implications of owning him, Suarez is not exactly FPL gol, yes he can create chances but he can't finish them and is deeply frustrating to own. I don't buy this Cisse nonsense, Ba is still getting into good positions and has been unlucky in the past few games (and i don't think he'll take another penalty that poorly) Plus he has Norwich at home GW30

    3) Ba or Pog. Nothing more to say on Ba. Pog is the latest flash in the pan and is not a better open than proven FPL performer. Fulham are in form for sure, but Pog will not play Wolves every wee, I don't see him maintaining his current form.

    4) the United wingers debate. The simple fact is this is Fergie we're dealing with, aside from Rooney and Evra (and maybe Evans) no United player is nailed on. The reason Tony V was the preferred option is the he was/is the cheapest and was in form and thus undroppable. Right now the fuy in form is Young, though Nani has been doing ok and IMO Valencia will not simply walk back into the team. Owning any is a risk, however, Young seems to preferred when fit, plus he's our best corner taker.

That would mean Jones gets dropped. There is no way he will play CB and I can't see him getting a run at CM now that Scholes is in the squad

Sounds abt right. Jones has a long career to go, he's done enough for this season.

Good analysis and I agree with all the points you made. I do have a slightly different argument to the Pog. I think he is great value, but as most have Dempsey its risky doubling up on Fulham attack. I'd have just one or the other. There may also be a question mark about Fulhams away form on attack.

In terms of away form perhaps the Pog could be a rotation option and just play him for the home games

quick question guys: who do you think is better to play for this next week, taiwo or kelly?

      Both not great options

Kelly - may not be back from his injury and may therefore only get a cameo. Fulham not great away either.

Taiwo - appears to be a rotation risk. Probably higher chance of attacking returns so I'd be swaying towards him.

Can you not bench them both?

thanks mate! ignoring home/away, rotation and injury though would you say fulham vs villa has a better chance of a cleanie or qpr vs bolton?... leaning towards the first but hmmm that's where im stuck

i could bench both but that'd involve playing simpson away to arsenal which i'd prefer not to do...

Haha, that's a few things to ignore! And yeah Simpson probably has to stay on the bench too.

I'd say it's pretty even on the CS chances front between the other 2. Perhaps Fulham edge it for having a better defence.

(sat here smugly with a wildcard activated...) 😉

haha yeah i know but just trying to decide on mere cs potential right now. and yeahh i think both the other two have better chance than simpson this week

yeahh its fulham with better defense but villa is a bit better id say (and fulham bad on the road, guess ill include that factor haha) but qpr have bolton who are not as good and taiwo has better attacking potential but not as solid defense...

haha nice! hows the wc team looking right now?

If it were me I'd go with Taiwo, which is a bit strange given Kelly is currently in my WC team! Have 65 points to make up in my ML and the guy on top has already played his WC, so I'm taking the plunge, and some risks....

              Migs, Bogdan
              Skrtel, Enrique, JEvans, Kelly, Caulker
              Nani, Dempsey, Walcott, Siggy, Surman
              RVP, Rooney, Suarez

alright thanks for the advice mate! haha not too strange though. im hoping to ship taiwo in the next week or two for evans

pretty good team. risks make sense to me too. and shouldn't be too hard to move players around. like you could always dump suarez for ade, ba, cisse, pog or odemwingie

i'd try to find a way to get bale and/or city defender back in just in case. like if you just have some extra funds to dump dempsey/walcott for bale and/or skrtel for someone.

good luck mate! hope you catch him 😀

In theory they should all score well imo. Fighting for a title, in reasonable form, good fixtures.

So long as he gets back into form to keep Valencia at bay. Could well get dropped/rotated

True, which I think could push him on. He knows with Young performing he needs to step it up or lose his spot in the team. Quietly confident of a Nani double figure score this w/e....

Ok, free transfers gone, and my squad looks like this. What next?

    Vorm Krul
    Enrique Simpson JEvans Senderos SKelly
    Bale SIlva Dempsey Siggy Sess
    RVP Rooney Ba

    2.9m in bank

I kind of want to get rid of Sess (not sure for whom), but also want Skrtel, not just for dgw but to double on Pool for their good fixtures. Then again an 8 pt hit seems crazy.

    What would you do?

i think a 4pter would be reasonable but i'd shy away from an 8pt hit. so pick one or the other. i think either could turn out well. maybe skrtel as he has a dgw and i'd rather double on pool than fulham defense.

see my post above for potential players to bring in for sess though. having the same dilemma myself.

Thanks for the reply. Saw your post above - hadn't thought of Scholes as an option. Hmmm. You thought about Pilks? Slightly worrying that he came off early last time though. Morrison is also very tempting, I admit.

no prob :D. yeahh im kind of considering a cheaper united center mind over a more expensive winger as they're easier to fit in. either way its a 3 way choice though so tough to know which one to chose...

ummm not sure. hadn't though of him. knew there were a few players i was forgetting about! and yeahh morrison pretty tempting too. especially with wigan next week i think...

two freebies this week. Can do Aguero and Luiz(have Richards also) to Rooney and Enrique. It would mean keeping Sess on bench this week. Sound reasonable? Other option is to consider WC this week.

Another option is Aguero to Suarez and upgrade any defender with rest of cash

I think with no LIV or MUN players you should WC this week. I understand it's annoying to lose a transfer, but there are too many things favouring a WC now for your team.
