We bring a somewhat painful Gameweek to a close, reliving the revival of another of United’s wingmen, the quiet ascent of Martin Jol’s Cottagers and the possible fallout from Roberto Mancini’s teamsheet…

The Player

Despite the absence of Sergio Aguero and David Silva, we weren’t short of performers stamping a lasting impression on the Gameweek. Pavel Pogrebnyak’s hat-trick offered further evidence that Martin Jol has unearthed a gem – a true dark horse talent which Fantasy managers have been quick to pounce on following a superb hat-trick in the mauling of Wolves at the Cottage.

Similarly, Gylfi Siggurdsson’s sublime brace at Wigan confirmed the classy Icelander as a prime budget asset, capable of translating his propensity to gain assists and goals with Reading in the Championship to the top flight, having been left out in the cold at Hoffenheim. Despite that, we’ve opted for Ashley Young as our player of the Gameweek, having announced his return to form with a display of true quality in United’s 3-1 win at White Hart Lane, capped by two goals – the second of which reminiscent of a player at the peak of his powers.

An upturn in performance from the former Villa man could be hugely significant for United and Fantasy managers. Bizarrely, with Antonio Valencia and Nani vying for the flank roles, Young and his rivals have appeared to shift in and out of form in a coordinated fashion, ensuring that Sir Alex Ferguson has always had at least one of his wide men firing and providing a supply line. With Valencia stricken by injury and Nani displaying a frustrating inconsistency once again, it’s fallen to Young to step up.

The brace at Spurs took Young to just four in the league for the season. Sunday was, however, the first time he has played 90 minutes for United in the league since Gameweek 13; in a campaign blighted by injury, Young has made just 12 starts. That considered, his goal return, with eight assists and eight Fantasy Premier League bonus suddenly looks a reasonable tally. There’s surely more to come; United have the fixtures to present Young with a platform to book his place, not only in the England squad, but in the starting XI for Euro 2012 and he will surely be aiming to end the season with a flurry of goals and assists to cement his status.

While Ferguson has assured us that Valencia is due to return for the trip to Wolves in Gameweek 29, it seems likely that he’ll battle with Nani for a start on the right while Young is given a serious run on the left-flank. With three goals and two assist in his last four appearances in all competitions, Young looks in the mood to work in tandem with Wayne Rooney and help steer United’s title tilt.

The Team

Slowly but surely, Martin Jol has produced a winning formula at Craven Cottage. Based on an rich array of attacking players, now supplemented by the defensive talents of Mahamadou Diarra, Jol has masterminded three consecutive victories, with Russian striker Pavel Pogrebnyak the catalyst for the burst in form.

Five goals in those three matches have seen Pogrebnyak become the hottest Fantasy property since Demba Ba’s return from the African Cup of Nations prompted huge ownership growth and a continued price rise. Pogrebnyak is on his way to achieving similar heights – already we’ve seen his value increased by 0.2, with an additional rise imminent later this week.

At 6.2, Pogrebnyak is undoubtedly superb value if he can maintain his incredible run of form. With Villa, Swansea and Norwich amongst the next four opponents, there’s every chance that the goals will continue to flow. The only caveat is, of course, the form of Clint Dempsey – Jol’s other major goal threat and scorer of another brace in Sunday’s rout.

With the likes of Rooney, Robin Van Persie and a double dose of Luis Suarez presenting a powerful trio this Gameweek, it’s hard to see a place for Pogrebnyak with an away trip at Villa, when Dempsey is surely already installed in many a midfield.

Pogrebnyak is the spearhead of a Fulham outfit emerging as the form side in the Premier League right now, while Dempsey continues to enjoy his most profitable Fantasy season, but there’s also talent elsewhere to consider.

Mark Schwarzer is a proven Fantasy performer in goal, protected by the imposing Brede Hangeland at the back. The Norwegian is the one player who has disappointed so far, failing to find the net in the league, having fetched half a dozen goals last term. Aaron Hughes, now seemingly restored to the back four, is now the viable budget alternative, providing value at 4.5 in the FPL while Stephen Kelly recovers from a thigh injury.

The Talking Point

When news of Roberto Mancini’s teamsheet broke just after 2pm on Saturday, the waves of discontent spread throughout the Fantasy fraternity. The after effects of that decision, coupled with the mechanics of the FPL vice captain, were felt by many: some fared well from the twist, others felt the burn of a red arrow and were left scorning at the City boss and their expensive bench warmers.

It’s enough to make Fantasy managers turn their back on City’s assets – a knee jerk reaction, but, in the cold light of day, perhaps not a huge error of judgment.

There’s little doubt that City face the tougher run-in compared to their rivals on the red side of Manchester. Five home games remain, compared to United’s six and the potentially decisive clash with United makes up one of those home matches, together with the visit of Chelsea, possibly boosted by a change in management, in Gameweek 29.

When you consider that both Silva and Aguero suffer a significant dip in returns on the road, they are left with home games against Sunderland, West Brom and QPR on the final day as potential big profit Gameweeks. The title could be won and lost by Gameweek 38, however, leaving Mancini free to rotate his troops against a QPR outfit possibly battling for survival.

In the short-term, while the defence has kept an incredible seven clean sheets in eight league games, the fixture list has been kind to them in that run. Trips to Swansea, Stoke and Arsenal will provide three very different tests of their defensive resolve. Feasibly, we could see Mancini’s men concede in all three, while the aforementioned home clash with Chelsea could also see the home copybook blotted.

Reduced defensive returns could be on the cards, then, while Silva and Aguro may continue to struggle on the road. In comparison, United have a smooth passage into Easter, with the City trip in Gameweek 36 their only real major test in front of them for the rest of the season. That could see a revolution of Fantasy assets – prompted by the deep cut dealt by Mancini’s teamsheet.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Double gameweek dilemma -

    Adam in for Sess

Or Enrique in for one of either...

Santon, Shotton, Kelly (also have Kompany/Evans but they are staying put).

I'd go Enrique for Shotton (bad fixtures) - Enrique is more likely to play both games IMO. With Gerrard coming back Adam could potentially miss out/be benched for one of the games perhaps.

Oh indeed. He's definitely a good option. However if you discount the chances of red cards for the rest of the season, then you should also probably discount any further Kompany attacking points, as both are very rare. And it's because of those rare attacking points why his ppg is higher.

Good morning community 🙂 Here comes a rant..

Was a bit peeved at the lucky Senderos owners at the weekend. Kelly was nailed on until the injury and Senderos definitely wasn’t. I know everybody’s benches came into play at the weekend so fair play I guess, twas just very frustrating as there was a 12point swing against a very close rival just there.

As for this week I wasn’t really contemplating any ‘Pool players and definitely no Everton. The red half of Merseyside are in my blood but as a fantasy option we are not convincing at present. Gerrard would have been worth a punt but I cannot see him playing so many games in such a short space of time, his body needs to be managed these days. I don’t think he’ll play the Sunderland game as he’ll play in the derby and the Cup QF. I’m not convinced by our defence of late, we have not looked solid at all – Especially at set pieces. Reina has looked a little shaky for this season and the end of last, despite his distribution remaining second to none. Skrtel is an option I suppose as a goal threat, he has been a shining light this season, surprising with many assured, commanding performances – But you need to work as a team as a collective unit and we haven’t been. Glen Johnson has been the usual – Handy going forward but you watch him with one eye peering through your fingers with him defensively, a car crash waiting to happen every game. I’d like to see him given the licence on the right wing, but that is another debate altogether..

I would bypass the midfield entirely. Adam gives the ball away a monstrous amount and I haven’t seen any of those £10million corners this season.. Kuyt, Maxi, Henderson are all rotation risks and Stewart Downing? Well, he should be dismembered and his body parts sold. Much potential, but his decision making is worse than Walcott’s and his shooting his scandalous.

Up top Carroll and Bellers are rotation risks. Suarez is the one I’ve plumped for, so frustrating and hasn’t ignited at all apart from the first two games and I’m hoping the time is now. He is worth a punt I feel even if just for the week.

Sess and Cattermole suspensions aid Liverpool, but I remain cautious. One is enough for me, although may add Skrtel (Kryten) in a week or two depending on how Carra improves.

Before I read anymore, Senderos is nailed on, he got an injury and was brought back slowly into the team. Whereas Kelly was still injured, simple as that.

I would strongly debate that. If Kelly was fit last weekend he would have played and after a decent showing at QPR from Hughes, I don’t think Senderos would have been. He was benched when he returned from injury and I don’t think Kelly will be.

I’ll guess we’ll see if Kelly is fit for this coming weekend. Hughes seems fitter now than when I tried to come back earlier in this season where he looked like he was treading water for a couple of games before getting injured again. Plus, I know many a Fulham fan was happy to see Senderos benched at QPR for the Hughes and Hangeland combo.

Not in my opinion. They've got very tough games coming up and have hardly been setting the world on fire. I brought in Enrique but wouldnt be surprised if I got no clean sheets from both games. Suarez is worth a punt I suppose but he'll probably just get 4pts instead of 2pts

Cheers pal. I think Suarez is worth a punt because I reckon he'll be amongst the points in the derby. Though he's probably as likely to get sent off for something ridiculous! I might bring Enrique back in as he is the cheaper option, though they're not the tightest at the back at the moment. Can't decide whether to keep Cahill or Richards for Enrique...

so who's considering Suarez. I've got this nagging feeling that he'll score well over the next 4/5 games. Problem is, will he score better than Rooney. Prob not.
    So: (all free)

Suarez + Valencia (long term transfer)

Looks good but Cahill? Chelsea aren't really keeping clean sheets. I'd transfer him out for Lescott, who has a decent goal scoring threat from set pieces.

Nani? Oh my oh my. His form is terrible, he is the Mr Inconsistent this season. Transfer him out for Valencia or Young.

Moses? Why is their no Silva or Bale in your team? It is ok trying to be differential but you've going over the top and it will bite you back.

Strike force is very good, but very wary of Suarez he isn't really scoring the amount of goals that you should expect of him.

Uber cheap defence there but I guess your budget is limiting you. You may need to pay more attention to value next season. The price rises/falls have been extremely volatile this season.

Keeping Mata, and selling Bale was a near-sighted in my view.

It's still a very good team though. Good luck.

IT, I didnt WC in the first 5 weeks and I held onto Cole, Holt, Nzogbia, Moses when they were on freefall. I didnt Capt Rooney and was at the 1m mark, so couldnt take hits. Next year i'l focus more on Value at the start.

Im thinking longer term I dont want Spurs until 31/32 then VDV might be back in contention, who is cheaper than Bale and with MAta's Fixtures, he should have been ripping it up.

I'm considering similar transfers this week, though I'd personally keep Kelly and get rid of Taiwo for Enrique.

so, DGW looming, here are my 2 cenets:

    Everton

lets get this one out of the way - the only sensible player for DGW, cannot play both games (Pinaar) due to the TOT loan terms, which leaves us with no EVE players to take, especially since their schedule is tough (unlike LIV, who are in bad form, but at least have a good ticker going forward.
only two other players to consider:
Bains - super expensive, potantial offensive returns, yet not many CS in his future. too expensive of a punt.
Drenthe - likely to play TOT due to pinaars absence and some glimps of form. however:
A - he plays against TOT
B - Massive rotation risk. moyes probably does not trust him even more than pardew does not trust ben arfa. this will end with tears.
In short, no EVE. not worth it.

    Liverpool:
bad form, lack of offensive returns, and even CS has dried out.
however, they are still Liverpool, and have a good run of fixures follwoing teh DGW, so interesting to look at.
in defence - Skrtel and Enrique as mid price defenders - you would probably want one of them but not both. cheeky punt on jhonson - slight injury worry, higher price, but capable of more offensive returns and BPs.
midfield - big issues. gerard big injury risk and B form, Adam can bring returns but if gerard plays he is off penalties and back to holding midfield roles - also likely to get yellow/red cards - especially in teh everton game. henderson cheap but unlikely to do much, kuyt can explaode but pricey and great rotation risk. interesting punt is Downing - horrible form this year - 0 assists 0 goals, but in years past used to bring good offensive value, and might surprise - however, "he is due" si probably a bad reason to make a transfer, and has burnt many here.

Offence - speaking of "he is due", Suarez is the star of this category - should be on a good run soon, especially with fixtures to come, however dissapointing so far and forward slots are a rare commodity.
Bellamy could have been a good shout, thou massive rotation risk, and Carrol is in horrible form this year.

so to summarize - no everton players, 1 liverpool defender, and a punt on suarez adam or downing - probably suarez at this point.

    opinions?

I agree! If anyone, i'd get Skrtel or Enrique from Pool. I've ignored the dgw game entirely though, and already done Ba > Roon and Sess > Sigurdsson.

Luiz Suarez has scored a goal for every FIFTEEN shots this season (6 goals from 89 attemps).

Liverpools starting XI on saturday have scored only 12 premier league goals between them this season.

Probably best not to go too heavy on Pool players this DGW I'm thinking

Yes but people are getting on like tranferring Suarez in is an idiotic move. It's a calculated risk with the potential for huge returns.

Even a single goal will be enough to make it a good choice.

Indeed. Even if he just gets a single assist, add that to 2 lots of appearance points and it's not a bad amount of points.

Morning all... I'm chasing about a 45 point lead at the moment, so would appreciate a little advice.
My team is linked, I've got 2 freebies this week and used one already on getting Richards out and Enrique in. The options I'm considering are:
    (a) Just do Aguero->RVP this week, then Mata and Zamora-> Rooney and [4.6m mid] next week for a 4 point hit.
    (b) Aguero->RVP this week, then Mata and Ba-> Rooney and [5.6m mid] next week for a 4 point hit.
    (c) Aguero, Zamora, Mata -> Rooney, RVP, Drenthe all this week for an 8 point hit.

Really want Rooney in for Wolves, but can't go without RVP for the next couple of weeks as my rivals have him- stupidly dropped him for a 2 week punt on Aguero (BLA, BOL, what could go wrong?!) and I'm lucky it hasn't cost me more: I've actually gained on both my main rivals since dropping him somehow!

Ouch on getting Ageuro for RVP.

I'd do a) but only because I'm a big fan of Ba despite the lack of recent returns.

But the sensible option would be b) as there arent any 4.6m mids I'd ever want to own whereas theres a few I'd own in the sub 5.6 bracket.

Wouldnt do the 8pter at all. It puts you on the backfoot straight away and no way I'd ever own Drenthe again, DGW or no DGW

Cheers Gaffer... the problem with (b) is it means dropping Ba for Norwich at home, which just sounds mental. But yeah, the best 4.6m option I can see is either Surman or Keith Andrews, neither of which is exactly inspiring. I like the gung-ho nature of (c), but you're right, it's probably stupid.

Yeah, I'm allowing myelf to be optimistic... he's a lucky SOB though. Annoyingly he brought in Dempsey this week who'd been my main differential for ages- obviously he was his VC too: could have caught up by 30 points if he'd just VC'd Silva! But things like that make you realise it ain't over til it's over.
