The second leg ties of the last sixteen of Champions League action are now almost upon us. With two of the eight fixtures taking place this evening, European Fantasy managers will be finalising plans ahead of the 7.30pm deadline. Here follows our mini-brief on each of the eight matches…

Arsenal vs AC Milan

With the 4-0 whitewash at the San Siro last time round, this fixture looks set to go either one of two ways. Logic will see most sane men agree that Milan look destined to make the Quarter-Final stage, but it is how Arsenal combat that belief which will decide the tie and our interests in it.

Arsene Wenger has plenty injury problems and, at present, has just two fit central midfielders. The Gunners boss admitted he’s inclined to play four strikers, due to a lack of alternatives, though while unsure on formation, it’s clear Arsenal plan an all-out attack against the Serie A leaders.

For this reason the team talisman, Robin Van Persie, is the man we’ve got our keenest eye on as a short term investment. If the Gunners are to score the four (or more) goals needed to escape the vice grip of Milan, there is no doubt the Dutchman will be on show.

His counterpart Zlatan Ibrahimovic is rolling off a domestic hat-trick and will be looking to put the sword to Arsenal again. With the hosts bombing forward, there will be plenty gaps in the backline for the big Swede to exploit.

One to watch: Robin Van Persie (Arsenal), Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Milan).

Benfica vs Zenit St. Petersburg

If the first leg was anything to go by, we’re in for a treat. Zenit edged a five-goal thriller in Russia, with both sides showing plenty of attacking menace. We’re hoping for more end to end action and, with that in mind, are backing a couple of players with strong recent history on the goal front.

Benfica may have slipped domestically, turning their unbeaten league record into one point from nine, but Oscar Cardozo is still a major threat – he grabbed both goals in the 3-2 defeat to Porto most recently.

The après winter break in Russia has only just kicked in so it’s hard to gauge the form of Zenit quite as clearly. Roman Shirokov bagged a brace in the first leg, as well as a goal for his mother country in the recent international break. He’ll need to be at the races as his side try and keep one up on Benfica tonight and, for that reason, gets a watchful eye from The Scout.

Andrei Arshavin may have left Arsenal to join the Russians on their transfer deadline day, but he is ineligible to play – if you were interested.

Ones to watch: Oscar Cardozo (Benfica), Roman Shirokov (Zenit).

Barcelona vs Bayer Leverkusen

Pep Guardiola’s men head into this fixture a lock for progression. Bayer Leverkusen need to score at least three goals at the Nou Camp, while trying to keep the home side at bay. Despite their recent 2-0 victory over Bayern Munich, one would have to rate the visitors’ chances at even slimmer odds than those of Arsenal.

Lionel Messi is well rested after a weekend out of the La Liga spotlight, while a host of characters around him from Cesc Fabregas to Dani Alves via Pedro could all equally dazzle on the night. We expect the home side to comfortably win but the risk of rotation will definitely be there for all to see. If you have any Leverkusen players, you might want to plan ahead and offload them now.

We’re far from confident on the German side’s chances but, as is the nature of these articles, we feel obliged to represent each team in our tips. Stefan Kießling has scored 3 goals in a run that has seen Leverkusen win all three Bundesliga matches since their first leg defeat to Guardiola’s side- it may be a big if, but if the visitors are to breach the Barca backline, he’s the man most likely.

Ones to watch: Dani Alves (Barcelona), Stefan Kießling (Leverkusen)

FC APOEL vs Lyon

On the evidence put forward in the first fixture we don’t have the making of a multi-goal thriller [his famous last words]. FC APOEL have to score at least one goal -this much we know for sure- but, having failed to net in each of their last three Champions League games, we’re inclined to look at the men keeping guard at the rear, with the home side’s ability to keep Lyon at bay crucial to their chances. Any of their bargain defenders could be on radars for that very reason.

At the other end we’ll pick up a goalkeeper for our considered thoughts. APOEL’s lack of attacking output gives us cause to believe that Lyon stopper – and new captain of France- Hugo Lloris stand a solid chance of chalking up back-to-back clean sheets.

Ones to watch: Paulo Jorge (APOEL), Hugo Lloris (Lyon)

Bayern Munich vs FC Basel

Our first leg preview mentioned how the Bavarian outfit were verging on entering territory that can only be classified as a slump- Jupp Heynckes’ men backed this up by falling to a 1-0 defeat in Switzerland. A few weeks later and Munich are very much entrenched in a “sticky patch” which has seen their chances of regaining the Bundesliga title from the hands of Borussia Dortmund slip further away. A weekend 2-0 defeat by Leverkusen is the latest kink in the road which has seen Bayern fall 7 points short of the leaders.

With over a week to go, and a home game against Hoffenheim at the weekend ahead, performances and optimism could wildly increase before their must-win tie with FC Basel but, as things stand, Munich need a kick in the backside to reverse the tie and get the job done. While Heynckes has a bounty of attacking options to call on, none of them can quite spark like Arjen Robben at his utmost best. Bayern fans will be hoping the Dutchman can replicate his recent brace for Holland in the 3-2 win over England.

With plenty of home-grown talent, Basel offer European Fantasy managers a chance to balance their budgets by buying players at low prices with room for plenty of reward. With the goal advantage, combined with Bayern’s recent form, there’s plenty belief that a place in the next round remains a distinct possibility. Fabian Frei at just 4.7 -having risen from a lower than low 4.0- is an option of many around.

Ones to watch: Arjen Robben (Munich), Fabian Frei (Basel)

Inter Milan vs Marseille

Picking up a mere two points from their last seven domestic games, Claudio Ranieri’s side have been in dismal form in Serie A. Barring a complete collapse from the teams above them, Inter won’t be in the Champions League next season and, with a 1-0 reverse from the first leg, they are on the verge of saying goodbye to this season’s competition, too.

Indeed, their last nine games in all competitions has seen a shameful record (0W, 2D, 7L). Only Gabriel Milito and Diego Forlan have scored over this spell -in the two draws- as Inter have struggled to show any sign of cohesion. We’re almost reluctant to pick a player for the home side due to their recent displays but Forlan stood out in the 2-2 draw against Catania, with a goal, assist and 7 shots- for this reason alone, we’re sticking our necks out for the Uruguayan, though there’s no doubt his acquisition would be a risky one.

For the visitors, Nicolas N’Koulou has stood out for “recovered balls” and is just 5 points off the overall top scoring defender. If Inter fail to fire, his resilience is likely to be a significant factor. The dynamism expected from the likes of Andre Ayew will be useful if your strikeforce needs a cheaper option than the likes of Messi, Ronaldo and company.

One to watch: Diego Forlan (Inter), Nicolas N’Koulou (Marseille)

Real Madrid vs CSKA Moscow

After a 1-1 first leg draw in Russia, Madrid are heavy favourites. Investment in the Russian outfit will be a risky and likely short term endeavour but that’s not to say there isn’t some profit to be had if the cards are played just right.

The visitors need goals, this much they know, and their midfield options are likely to be your best bet in this long shot fixture. Alan Dzagoev is a good all-round figure but Keisuke Honda, just back from injury, has caught the eye of our gambler’s instinct this Matchday.

Unable to avoid the penchant for a risk, we’re not opting to keep an eye on Cristiano Ronaldo, either. Logic says he’s likely to prove pivotal and produce a substantial Fantasy score but the slow return to form of Kaka intrigues us more and, if given the chance, we reckon his resurrection could continue against CSKA.

Ones to watch: Kaka (Real Madrid), Keisuke Honda (CSKA)

Chelsea vs Napoli

Andre Villas-Boas has left the building and Chelsea’s Champions League hopes are now in the hands of Roberto Di Matteo. Regardless of the man in the dugout, it’s the players on the pitch that have to do their job and, as shown down the years, they clearly march to the beat of their own drum.

Following their first leg defeat in Italy, Chelsea now need to recover a two goal deficit against a Napoli side simply oozing confidence. With rumours of player power having a big hand in the departure of Villas-Boas, one of their most influential figures, Frank Lampard, is afforded the platform to produce the goods. If the Blues are to save their European bacon we’d be keeping a close eye on the elder statesman in midfield; if football really was scripted, this is exactly how it would go.

With the Chelsea defence always prone to a back-line gaffe or two, it’s not hard to see Napoli getting more goals. After a measure of restraint kept us from playing the Edinson Cavani panpipes too much in the last Matchday, we can hold out no longer. The Uruguayan striker is good for goals, simple as that.

Ones to watch: Frank Lampard (Chelsea), Edinson Cavani (Napoli)

Hmmm, getting Spurs Defensive cover in the next few weeks, is it worth the full £6.2m for BAE or is it worth just going for the Beast that is Brad Friedel at £5.7m and rotates perfectly with Vorm till the end of the season?

ok folks some UCL help here

Have taken a 2 point hit already but am happy to lose 2 more if needs be to sort this mess out

    Chiotis (Casillas)

Puyol, Cisshoko, Bonera (not playing) Ramos (Badstuber)

    Charalambidis, Gaitan, Nocerino (Valbuena, Kroos)

    Messi (c), Gomez, Ronaldo

    0.8 in bank

Thinking I need to lose Bonera but for who? Would have 5.1 to spend

P.S. Reason subs are the way they are is that all of them play next week and so are easy to sub in if the guys playing this week flop.

using my free bet (PP Cup Runner up) on chelsea, jusht cant decide whether to play shafe and go for win in this eves game at 1.66 or go outright to win cup at 5.0 then lay it off if we get through thish match and leicester in next round.

Anyone any other suggestions of bets for me to go for with my £75?

Walsall @ 5/2 to beat Sheffield Utd.

Walsall have had some better results recently and Utd have lost 2 out of their last 3 games.

Sheff Utd are also without 3 - 4 of their first choice defenders (two are banned as were sent off at the weekend, one is injured and the other missed last game due to the arrival of his new born baby so should be back for this) they have however signed 2 defenders on a 1 month emergency loan deal which even if they make it for tonight will have only just met the squad later today so could still be a dodgy defence.

Hmmm starting to consider taking a double hit this week. Any thought appreciated.

    Transfers so far

Dzeko > Pognebyak (was done on Sat so before hatrick and knee jerk)
    Sess > Ryo

    Additional transfers

Tawio > G Johnson (if fit, and was planned for next week anyway)
Dempsey > Young/Nani (want Utd attacking cover, always planned to get rid of Clintus and won't play him this weekend.)

My team is currently for weekend

    Lindegaard
    Richards, Taiwo, J Evans
    Silva, Bale, Mata (C), Miyachi
    RVP, Ba, Pog

    Krul, Dempsey, Kelly, Santon

Doing the two transfers with Young coming in would leave £1mil in bank or £0.6mil if Nani.

People really are going for it transfers wise this week arn't they. Mate at work who has made 12 transfers all season has wildcarded. another mate has taken a 12 point hit already and hes only taken 8 points in hits all season. craziness

    Isacki,

you wrote some stuff at the end of the last article that I myself have been mulling.

While I am not sure about the analytical change, changing the way you view the information might help.

As you pointed out, some players are quite wasteful. That's something you have to get a feel for, and information that can make you outstanding if you treat it properly.

For example Riise has the accuracy of a Medieval catapult.

      LOL on Riise.

Yeah I think we have to account for the fact that just as players differ in their ability to get a chance, they differ in their ability to finish a chance.

The ideal, and frankly impossible, would be to have a graphic showing where each of their shots to date this season has gone.

A summary stat of shots on / off / in is good too though.

Just want to personalize further. Put another way, using the same shots conversion ratio for all players doesn't look like working.

lol yup, that innings shot distribution graphic was exactly what I was thinking of at the time!

BTW I just checked the member stats. They include a breakdown of which goals were in/out of the box but not for shots. Shots are broken down into on/off/set piece attempts/woodwork/blocked.

Siggy can be overlooked for the next two gameweeks as long as you can stomach the missed price rises.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. I don't like the idea of drenthe too be honest but not many other options out there and at least drenthe guaranteed to start vs spurs at least with pineaar ineligible.

As long as siggy doesn't rise too much it would be a straight swap and no big deal if drenthe doesn't pay off, as long as siggy doesn't go wild which is unlikely at home to city and away at fulham.

Im mulling this over too with my wildcard. Have Sig at moment , could bring Drethe in , whats putting me off is that even after this gameweek he then has arsenal . Yhat three tough games , and so far hes only played in easy ones.
Hes never even played two games in a row. Moyes had to say something nice because he scored (still took him off early though) but dosent mean he will play him

Dont want to end up stuck with an unreliable player , will mean have to make a valuable transfer later. I also dont see my rivals getting him (they need to get rooney and suarez etc) so even if he does score it wont do much damage , think he safe to ignore

Seems pointless losing valencia now with him due back next week so sess has to go. I've got anything from 7.3m downwards to spend but no one else really jumping out at me. Any suggestions?

If you're looking in Everton's direction I'd look again at Pienaar. One missed game (that they're unlikely to do well in anyway) isn't enough to make him less appealing than Drenthe, in my opinion. A goal, assist and 3 bps in three games is decent at his price. I think he'll do more in one game than Drenthe will in two.

continuing the virus topic that atb brought up.. can i just ask everyone why rooney? he's gotten 2 points far too often and havin watched him, he's playin pretty deep and does not look like scorin really.. sure he's got a couple of games lately, but really they've come out of nowhere.. have a feelin ppl looked at his points, seen the hype on here and have gona crazy.. the main reason i can think of for gettin him is his good fixtures and the fact he's one of the few nailed on manu attackers.. this year form has been a major factor though, and rooney honestly does'nt have it
Course i could be plantin the dont buy rooney idea too:)
Suarez on the other hand, looks threatenin in every game i've seen... stats seem to back him up too.. yet he's such a hated player on here that most ppl(me included) dismiss him

      Suarez looks threatening, doesn't score.

Rooney scores. In fact he's score 5 in his last 4 games, 2 against Chelsea, 2 against Liverpool and 1 against Tottenham - the teams at the top of the table.

West Brom, Wolves, Fulham, Blackburn, QPR, Wigan...and so on are his fixtures. He's nailed on.

Look at his scores early on in the season when Young was playing. Very good

Yes hes been playing deep , because man u had so many injuries in mids and def. They now have more mids back so he can concentrate on attack . Hes coming into form , has the euros to look forward to , and the team as a whole are starting their usual strong finish.

        +1

United are chasing the title with 10 games to go, this is when they go into overdrive. Young is fiot and firing, Nani looks like he might be, Giggs, Scholes and Carrick are producing, Tony V is on the way back, and at the centre of it all is Wayne Rooney, he is the man to have from now until GW38.

:).. convincin arguments.. brings up a good point wherein stats and watchin games can get you only so far.. agree at the end of the day the run in they have is beautiful.. and penos and him bein nailed on should be enough reason.. just cant decide between him and suarez.. suarez(C) if i get him in and rvp(C) if i get rooney in

From starting Roney has only 5 2s all year - plus 2 1s from sub apperances. RVP has 10 2s in comparison.

To be honest I seen ATB's post and although I agreed with the sentiment of it, it was the example of Ba that I disagreed with. 3pts in 3 gameweeks is terrible no matter what way you look at it and considering 2 of those gameweeks were WOL and SUN it was a very disappointing return. Even if that penalty had have went in it still wouldn't have been great from him. Dealing in 'if's and 'but's is a fool's game anyway.

Ba is still a good FPL pick, no doubt about it, there is no necessity as such to get rid of him but there are factors which may or may not be affecting his output. Considering the fixtures aren't as good as they have been for Newcastle, the fact that Newcastle are playing a bit crap right now, the Cisse factor, the mass exodus which is causing his price to rapidly drop, I feel a calculated gamble on Suarez in a DGW is a viable option. I haven't just made these reasons up to justify a move, this reasons justified the move. Suarez may fail disastrously but if he doesnt get anything in his DGW, as long as you are early on the bandwagon and early off it, you don't stand to lose too much.

Rooney isn't even a gamble imo. He's a nailed on attacker for the best (potentially 2nd best) team in the country with set pieces and a fixture-list to die for. The alternatives in that team and others are not nearly as appealing. If you think he is a bad pick or a virus idea you are just daft.

as mentioned.. rooney being nailed on and on penalties, with those fixtures is a brilliant prospect.. however, through watchin games and stats he does'nt seem to be.. gotta be a mix of all 3.. gut feelin, logic and data to make decisions.. not one or the other.. my point anyways

What do you want from a player to justify buying him that you don't get from Rooney right now?

      He's in a great team
He has great fixtures for a long while
He's in good form (five goals in his last three starts)
He's on set pieces, most importantly penalties
      He's nailed on
He's a proven Premier League performer
      He's a hunk

Add to that the lack of viable alternatives in the same team as they're all rotation risks.

To all those saying that Suarez as capt =8 points

His average per game is 3.9 (call it 4 )

    4x4 x2 = 16

So if he scored one goal and drew a blank in the other he would make his average

One goal in two games gets him 16 points as captain Not bad i think you will agree, and there
always chance of more , and even if he dosent score 8 points from capt is a lot more than most of us got
    last week

Alternatively he could get booked and that is -2. Saying that, i think i will captain him. Seems to do well against Sunderland.

Given his penchant for yellow cards and Phil Dowd taking charge of the merseyside derby I'd take 1 off his score.

      On the flip side

enrique could easily get a clean sheet and an assist over the 2 games.

      6+5 = 11

      as captain 11 x 2 = 22

Only three liverpool players have an average of 4 or above

            Reina Johnson and Skirel

So statistically it best to capt a defender or the keeper

I agree that taking PPG and doubling them is a decent way to quickly compare a double gameweek player to a single gameweek player. I use it a lot.
