David Moyes is full of praise for Royston Drenthe. The injury doubts rack up for Arsenal ahead of tonight’s game with Milan. Pablo Zabaleta is set to be sidelined with a hamstring problem, Darren Bent undergoes successful ankle surgery, while Swansea decide against appealing Nathan Dyer’s three-match ban:

David Moyes has been praising Royston Drenthe ahead of Everton’s upcoming double gameweek. The Dutchman has been a source of frustration for Fantasy managers this term –he has started two games in a row only twice in the current campaign- but last week saw him rewarded a role on the right for the Toffees against QPR. Drenthe grabbed a goal at QPR and, with Landon Donovan back in the US after the completion of his loan deal, he looks set to battle Seamus Coleman for a chance on the flank. With Steven Pienaar also unavailable to play against parent club Spurs, Drenthe is seeing a fair amount of Fantasy investment ahead of next week and his manager admits he’s starting to earn his trust:

It’s taken him time to settle. He came from Real Madrid and you think they will come and understand what we do here. But they don’t straight away. There’s a lot more of the defensive side of the game we need him to be part of. He can’t just do what he wants. He’s beginning to do a bit better and can do much better. He has that ability to score, to create a chance. We’re beginning to trust him much more now.

Arsene Wenger revealed Arsenal have plenty injury worries ahead of tonight’s Champions League game against Milan. Four-nil down from the first leg, the Gunners need something of a miracle at the Emirates if they are to overcome the deficit but will be short of midfield options tonight. Yossi Benayoun is out through illness, Abou Diaby has picked up a hamstring problem and Mikel Arteta needs a week’s rest after his head knock at Anfield last weekend. Thomas Rosicky is also a doubt for Wenger in the middle of the park, while Kieran Gibbs is struggling to overcome a groin problem. The Arsenal boss revealed no players will be rested as he attempts to haul back the Italians’ lead, with Robin Van Persie set to lead the line against the Serie A leaders.

Pablo Zabaleta is set for a spell on the sidelines after picking up a hamstring injury in City’s weekend win over Bolton. The full-back limped out of the proceedings with less than 20 minutes on the clock and with Micah Richards also injured, Kolo Toure stepped in to replace the Argentine at right-back. Richards’ Fantasy owners have been stung by Roberto Mancini’s recent rotation policy, which saw the right-back rested in Gameweek 25 and 26 and, despite Zabaleta’s upcoming absence, Toure’s versatility and experience during the title run-in could well see the Ivorian play a part in Mancini’s thinking over the vital final third of the season.

Darren Bent has undergone surgery on his injured ankle. The forward, who ruptured ligaments in the Gameweek 26 match at Wigan, is expected to return to full training in around 12 weeks’ time, according to Aston Villa. With the club struggling to find the net –just a single goal in their last three- young forward Andreas Weimann scored yet again for the reserves yesterday. Weimann bagged a couple of hat-tricks for Villa’s second string last week and was drafted into the first-team squad for the trip to Blackburn. Alex McLeish afforded him a single minute at Ewood Park but with Gabby Agbonlahor continuing to misfire, Weimann may be set for more game time over the next fortnight, with Fulham and Bolton both rolling up to Villa Park.

Swansea have decided against appealing the red card handed out to Nathan Dyer in the weekend win at Wigan. The winger received a three-match ban for a challenge on Jordi Gomez but, while the Welsh club view the decision as “extremely harsh”, they feel that an appeal could run the risk of an extension to the ban. Dyer will now miss games against City, Fulham and Everton and will not be available for selection until April 1- Wayne Routledge is odds-on to replace him on the flank, with the latter finding himself out of favour lately, having managed a mere 21 minutes gametime over the Swans’ last five matches.

Reports suggest Ashley Cole is a doubt for Chelsea’s FA Cup replay at Birmingham this evening. The left-back is said to have picked up the problem in Saturday’s 1-0 loss at West Brom and will be assessed prior to the St Andrews showdown.

Well injuries permitting I'm taking a punt on Drenthe. Have 1.2m and two transfers, can't afford anyone else and dont have anyone else sellable apart from Reo Coker or Kelly. Thinking Drenthe has more points potential than Distin or Hibbert, so going to take the plunge whilst Sess warms the bench for two weeks. 🙂

Drenthe is the guy who was struggling to break into the Everton a few weeks back? Try a punt on a Liverpool midfielder just for this week as the returns could push you up the rankings.

Don't get an Everton player in your FPL team unless his name he is a leftback and takes freekicks and penalties otherwise they screw you over fact.

    Virus Ideas and Fantasy Football

I love this site, it’s a brilliant resource for an enjoyable, if somewhat frustrating game. However this site has jumped in popularity this season, and although in some ways it can be seen as a positive – there are more posters than ever so surely more posters means more sensible people right? – it has led to a prevalence of what I call ‘virus ideas’.

A virus idea is a statement somebody makes, often unsupported, that somebody else agrees with. They then post the same idea at another time; somebody else agrees with it and all of a sudden there is a bullshit pandemic on our hands on a Friday before the gameweek starts as hundreds of posters regurgitate the same opinions dressed up as facts. These virus ideas are all the more dangerous when a regular poster is the ‘Patient Zero’, as it can add a layer of credibility to the idea – quite often the amount somebody posts offers them more respect and credibility than their football knowledge can actually support. Quantity always appears to outweigh quality on these message boards.

An example of this can be found when people discuss a case like Demba Ba – the virus idea at the moment doing the rounds, is that he is playing poorly due to the ACON. I agree his output has dropped since that competition (although do remember he scored in his first game back), but that dip in productivity is not down to the ACON, it is down to the team itself playing poorly lately. We are not creating enough chances for him. Also he may perform better with an orthodox target man such as Best or Ameobi than he does with Cisse. Again this is not the result of the ACON. I believe that people have simply taken what happened to Drogba the other year, and lazily applied it to Ba without actually watching him play. This isn’t the only case – certain players are ruled out as being ‘injury prone’ etc.

Anyway, I sense the tl;dr brigade are sharpening their keypads so I wont get bogged in specifics. I am not having a go at any particular person here, before paranoia sets in – its more a general call for a bit of sense and analysis. If you have an idea – check it out for yourself with stats and heatmaps and make a reasoned argument. Don’t just parrot someone else without studying the matter for yourself. If everyone puts in a little more effort this site would be an amazing place, as there are some top football thinkers here.

Right tl;dr eh? Fine. But that’s my two bits chucked in.

    Ps
Anyone who actually puts tl;dr at the end of this likes to have sexual intercourse with badgers. Dead ones at that. Don’t trust them, they are sick individuals.

Yeah I agree with a lot of this - it's always good to check the stats too.

Ba was ridiculously unlucky to not score in the last 3 - Friedel and Mingolet's brilliance only prevented him.

A good one from winter wildcard time was Richards being more of a threat the Kompany when you examine the stats he's not really.

Oh and dead badgers are sexy.

Very true in both cases, Ba smashed the crossbar and had a penalty saved - could have had a lovely FPL score with a tiny bit more luck.

      Great post my man.

I'm sticking with Ba at least until after the Norwich game. He has been unlucky not to score more. Also, the penalty miss is what sticks in people's minds I suppose. If he'd scored, he'd be safe I reckon.

There's a Rooney virus going around at the moment and I'm determined not to catch it. At least not yet!

I think the main virus of FFS is speculation - people citing a reason they've not actually investigated that "sounds plausible" . People then end up citing it because it "sounds plausible" even if digging deeper makes it highly unlikely.

That, and also the fact that people create reasons to fit their needs.

Frustrated that your player has not scored in two weeks? Come up with a reason why that might be and selling him won't feel as bad. Before you know it it will have caught on. This might well happen subconsciously.

There is a really good case of a whole country being terrified of 'virus ideas' when you look at America in the 50's and 60's and the Communist witchhunts.
Thinking of ideas as potentially contagious is an interesting way of looking at societies.

      +1. I agree with you.

The Ba example is a good one. A lot of people who talking about Cisse being a much better fantasy football player than Ba, despite Ba's proven pedigree. They were also claiming Cisse negatively effects Ba's scoring potential. A quick look at the stats says otherwise.

Where we differ in opinion is how we feel about it. To be honest, the more people who repeat the same unfounded claims and those who read these claims deserve to do poorly for not checking things out for themselves. A bit of research and you can cut through the s.....

I still believe the jury is out on whether Cissé is impacting Ba's potential or not.

The sample used in the article on that a few days ago was so very small that I don't think it was conclusive. It wouldn't be the first time a partnership would need some time to settle.

I agree. As good as Cisse was in Germany, he is still brand new to Newcastle and to the Premier League. I'll judge that partnership next Christmas (if both are still there)

Thing about FF is usually by the time it is conclusive the points have gone.

I think on the timescales that players are invested in, Ba has already lost the bandwagon and convinced many that his points are reduced with Cisse.

the ACON before that was a season where plagued with a knee problem drogba only played 19 games and he scored 3 times in his first 3 starts back from the ACON.

first of all i really enjoyed the main post and think its brings up the great point that you have take anyone's comments with some salt and actually think for yourself. im new to these boards and have been trying to be careful spouting out any ideas/predictions that i havent deduced from actually watching the trending of performances, which for a Yank can be quite difficult given the time difference..

anyway just to add a tidbit i think alot of times people only look at the EPL stats, whereas, and not to criticize you TRIGGERLIPS because ive seen several insightful posts from you, but if you compare Skrtel and Enrique's stats in all competitions this season Sktl has 4g,1a in 29 starts whereas Enrique has 0g,2a in 30 starts, so really there is some solid merit to the the notion that Skrtel is a superior force in attack.

Actually Everton will control I believe. Liverpool is too dependent on their quick four; (the four that lost against Arsenal: Henderson, Downing, Kuyt & Suarez) who have only played about 5 matches together. Which they can not play effectively with Carroll in (Kuyt out) of the line-up.

Bit of both really, I had Jagielka, Drenthe and Osman for the last DGW. It was fooking horrible. But Spurs at home and Liverpool away are pretty nasty games. I think they might get something, but its pretty hard to see who will profit FPL wise. I'd be really surprised if they kept a clean sheet in both games, but as you say they are playing well so you never know.

ok folks put this up in the Dead Zone this morning, thought I'd repost it as there is a new article and more people around

Just thought I’d offer my opinions on some of the debates that have been raging on here since the weekend.

    1) Aguero or Rooney. I did this very move last night. Aguero always has the potential to grab a huge score, but has not done so for weeks, plus he doesn’t perform away and as we have seen there is the threat of Mario, Dzeko and soon,Tevez, to think about. Rooney is United’s key player, is nailed on, in form, on pens, will take some free-kicks and is virtually guaranteed to start every game when fit and has a better run of fixtures. (Plus as a United fan I find it much easier to cheer a Rooney goal than any Aguero one) So IMO Rooney is a better option until the end of the season.

    2) Ba or Suarez. Almost did this very move. But, aside from the moral implications of owning him, Suarez is not exactly FPL gold, yes he can create chances but he can’t finish them and is deeply frustrating to own. I don’t buy this Cisse nonsense, Ba is still getting into good positions and has been unlucky in the past few games (and i don’t think he’ll take another penalty that poorly) Plus he has Norwich at home GW30. Plus (and this is an addition based on what Attilla said) Newcastle are out of form right now, and Ba has had fewer chances (much like Spurs). This spell will end and Ba's time will come again, he has proven himself and for me the only person worth selling him for might be Ade around the time of GW31.

    3) Ba or Pog. Nothing more to say on Ba. Pog is the latest flash in the pan and is not a better open than a proven FPL performer. Fulham are in form for sure, but Pog will not play Wolves every week, I don’t see him maintaining his current form. If you don't own Clint, Pog is a cheaper, rotational alternative but if you insist on playing 3 up front most weeks Ba is a better option.

    4) the United wingers debate. The simple fact is this is Fergie we’re dealing with, aside from Rooney and Evra (and maybe Evans) no United player is nailed on. The reason Tony V was the preferred option is the he was/is the cheapest and was in form and thus undroppable. Right now the guy in form is Young, though Nani has been doing ok and IMO Valencia will not simply walk back into the team. If I guy gets injured it's unfortunate but if the guy who replaces him does well he should stay. Owning any is a risk, however, Young seems to preferred when fit, plus he’s our best corner taker. This last part is just my observation, I can't recall a time when all 3 have been fit together to see who is the most likely to sit.

The Pogrebanyk (whatever) argument is such a dicey one - is he a flash in the pan like Maloudas early scores last season, or is he a FPL points machine. Helluva gamble either way. Dont know myself, from the highlights he looked great - though it was against a very poor Wolves.
Fulham looking full of beans at the moment, great movement and forward play, they appear to be making a lot of chances for him so he could be decent.

Ach I dunno, its a tough one.

2-I think Suarez is worth a punt over dgw, you can always go back to ba.
3-Pog is a beast and I think he will score as many as Ba between here and end of season
4-I agree on utd wingers - big dilemma . I think saf likes val for his unbelievable work rate and that gives him the edge for me.
I watch as much soccer as possible and get stats to back up my opinions, so it is IMO that only then can one make informed decisions and choices.

Hmm, "the Digest" yesterday made me tempted to do Silva>Young in my WC, though I own Rooney too.

    So here are my thoughts:

Silva's form has dropped a bit, with resting now in the equation too, although that's the case with Young too. Young proved his abilites against Spurs and may give me a hatful of goales and assists. But as said, he's a rotation risk and I already have Rooney. But I can save some money by selling Silva to Young. however if I sell Silva I will have no City coverage, attack or defense.

The next six fixtures for them:

Young:(WBA,wol,FUL,bla,QPR,wig) There will be plenty of goals for United in those games. And if young is playing, he's bound to be involved IMO, with his freekicks and corners, pace and shots.

Silva:(swa,CHE,sto,SUN,ars,WBA) , to be honest I don't see much goals for City in those games. 1-2 goals maximum per game IMO. Although Silva has ther most assists in PL.

I also found something interesting about Silva's fixtures. In the first part of the season, Silva only had 2 goals and 0 assists together versus all these six teams. Could be a coincidence? Or maybe not... 😛
But the teams have very tight defenses.

If I do the move I can easily swap Silva again for Young if Young doesn't work out, since I bought Silva for 10.4M, because of my Silva>Gerrard punt :P.

+ one thing against: All in my ML has Silva and I am leading my ML with 1 point.

But I can get more points by having Young IMO.

    Any thoughts please? 🙂

I have trouble with the Yaya proposition. I know the FFS guys think he's a valid alternative to Silva on account of his creativity numbers but his actual fantasy returns are pish. In his last eight games he has only once brought in more than 3 points. That just isn't enough for me.

      Tough call.

I've had Silva all season and I'm not looking to get rid right now as his stats suggest his performances have been good.

This could change if Nani/Young start to show some consistency and pick up some prolonged good form.

It's too early to make such a bold move in my opinion, especially if you're trying to hold a lead.

The rest of my midfield is Silva, Bale, Mata, Dempsey, so Sess was a bit excessive anyway, although I had benched Dempsey away with no problems.

I can't see Chelsea doing much, so I'd take out Mata and replace him with someone stronger, like Robben, Kroos, Hamšík, or Gaitan. You could also upgrade a keeper and include a more attacking defender too (Thiago Silva, Cissokho, Dani Alves). Otherwise that's a strong and balanced team.

Oh good you're here. Yeah, its PIN 8000103

If anyone else is interested we're doing a Fantasy Cheltenham competition, yeah I know, but its a handy way to give you some decent knowledge if you like a flutter. The site is:
      http://fantasyracing.telegraph.co.uk

The league pin is above. Only me (and Catmac) in so far so plenty of room.

    Which three Fulham to get/keep?
    A. Dempsey+Pog/Kelly
    B. Dempsey+Pog/Schwarzer
    C. Dempsey+Kelly/Schwarzer

Am on a WC and currently have A.

Can't find a decent replacement at same price for Kelly, although his injury (any news on extent?) may make that an easier decision to make

UCL FF. Anyone investing in any of the following less obvious matches, and if so who you eyeing up?
    Arsenal - Milan
    Benfica - Zenit
    Apoel - Lyon
    Inter - Marseille
    Chelsea - Napoli

Cardozo of Benfica. Also had Shirokov from GW2

Got to be something in the Arsenal game - they will be going for it. Could end in tears. El Sharawaay could be an interesting value call but Ibra is the obvious one.

Moses at 91%. Ready to rise in price!
He's been rested, and has a reasonable fixture. But I've given up on him after countless 2-pointers.

A lot of hard work on this site goes into using a well-worn method to predict who's going to get goals. This is by looking for those with the most shots/shots on target to identify those who might score more. While it undeniably has some hits, there's many recurring big misses too - Huth, Riise and Suarez being the first examples to jump to mind. I presume it had some input on the player predictions for forwards, and again the forwards predicted to score highest from the WC onwards included Aguero (at the top), Sturridge, Ba, Suarez, Agbonlahor, Ade, Ruiz, all of whom have generally been underwhelming. It just seems that certain teams and players will not deliver on goal attempts - and presumably this shows this analysis needs to be refined?

Disclaimer: I'm not expecting predictions to be relied upon and appreciate all work - wondering how it can be improved.

i think you answered your own question.. watch the games, determine which teams have a style of play that creates the most quality goal-scoring chances and which players tend to most be in position to benefit from such systems of play.. there's no certainty in predictions week to week but as long as Aguero or Balotelli are consistently starting atop the Man City lineup they are going to keep getting chances to score, etc....
