Carlos Tevez continues to build up his fitness amid reports he is set to feature against Chelsea. Anderson may be out for the season after reportedly sustaining a hamstring injury in training. Alex McLeish hails the recent displays of Stephen Ireland, Glen Johnson is a concern for Kenny Dalglish ahead of tonight’s Merseyside derby, while David Moyes is wary of pushing some of his comeback stars too quickly:

Carlos Tevez has stepped up his conditioning training ahead of Man City’s game with Chelsea next Wednesday. The Argentine has featured for the reserves twice recently but has been withdrawn from the second string’s squad this week and, with the City frontline struggling to find the net, Roberto Mancini is keen to build up his former captain’s fitness in time for the crucial showdown. If United win at Wolves this weekend, City will enter the Chelsea game four points behind their title rivals; Tevez could well feature as Mancini looks to keep in touch with his neighbours as the pressure at the top ramps up. In other news, the City boss is sweating on the fitness of Joleon Lescott- the centre-half missed Sunday’s defeat at Swansea with a groin injury, with results of a scan expected at some point today.

Andre Santos is expected to turn out for Arsenal reserves on Wednesday evening as he nears a first-team comeback. The Brazilian – who has been missing since Gameweek 14 with an ankle injury – was an unused sub in last night’s win over Newcastle but “needs 90 minutes” to build up his fitness, according to Arsene Wenger, with an appearance against the Baggies second string now pencilled in. The Gunners boss also revealed Abou Diaby could return against Everton next week- the midfielder lasted just 27 minutes of his latest comeback before limping off at Liverpool.

Fulham’s Zdenek Grygera has confirmed he will not feature again this season, with his recovery from knee surgery taking longer than anticipated. The right-back suffered anterior ligament damage in the Gameweek 11 match with Spurs and his absence has afforded Stephen Kelly a chance to establish himself in Martin Jol’s back-four. The Cottagers have picked up defensively of late, with just a single goal conceded in their last three and, priced at 4.0, Kelly’s place as a cut-price Fantasy option continues to look secure over the remainder of the campaign.

Alex McLeish has heaped praise on the recent displays of Stephen Ireland, suggesting the midfielder will be an integral part of the Villa first XI over the remainder of the season. Ireland has now played 90 minutes in back-to-back matches over the last two gameweeks – the first time this term he has done so. Playing in the hole and priced at just 5.3, Ireland has the potential to be a bargain, though with Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool in the next four, Villa’s fixtures are hardly appetising. Mcleish went on to say:

Ireland has been a revelation in the last few weeks. From what I’ve seen the last couple of weeks, I’m thinking Stevie is starting to look like the player he was at Man City. There is a player in there alright. You see the slide tackles, dispossessing people. I thought he was really good on one to ones when he didn’t have the ball in terms of dispossession. He is at a very good moment – and long may that continue.

Reports suggest Anderson may be set to miss the remainder of the season after badly damaging a hamstring in training last week. Though United have yet to comment, the Mail reckon the club are awaiting results of a scan on the problem, with a lengthy lay-off more than likely. The Brazilian started eight of the first nine matches for the champions but, in an injury-hit season, has featured just twice from the bench since then and, with Paul Scholes coming out of retirement, it’s arguable as to whether Anderson’s midfield contribution has been missed by Sir Alex Ferguson’s side in their climb back to the summit.

Darron Gibson is the only definite absentee for Everton ahead of this evening’s Merseyside derby, David Moyes confirmed yesterday. The Toffees boss did admit, however, that, with an FA Cup clash against Sunderland to follow this weekend before squaring up to Arsenal next midweek, he is wary of pushing some of his fit-again players too soon over the next couple of games, with several of his squad only just returning from injury:

Some players I don’t think are as match fit as I’d like and that is a little bit of a concern for me. On Saturday I was a bit concerned about Seamus Coleman and whether he was going to be match fit. Even Nikica Jelavic, he hadn’t been injured like some of the others but he’d missed a couple of weeks and we’ve had quite a few players like that. I thought it showed near the end of the [Tottenham] game. We didn’t quite have the energy I would’ve liked.

Kenny Dalglish’s only concern centres around Glen Johnson. The right-back has missed the last couple of matches after picking up a hamstring problem in England training and is once again a doubt for this evening’s match, with his manager revealing:

He’s got a niggle, so we’ll have to wait and see. Sometimes they take longer to clear up than others – you keep thinking you’re going to get there, but it doesn’t quite happen. We’ll have to wait and see where he is.

What do you guys think of:

    Krul Bogdan
    Caulker Evans Lescott Shotton Kelly
    Silva Bale Dempsey Walcott Young
    Rooney RVP Holt

    Too little money in defence?

Cannot afford the Yak with the amount Ive spent in midfield and attack already. Would if I could!

Could be Graham for Swansea's nice run. I will consider Silva->Sigurdson as a means of affording McClean->Walcott, which would mean I could keep Skrtel (depends on tonights result, really) and get Odemwingie, or sell Skrtel and get Adebayor

      That is a mammoth midfield!

It does work with only having a cheap striker to play the odd favourable home fixture.

How far away are you from having that team?

I hear you, but I think Id rather have Silva and Bale than Bale and Adebayor. I think people dumping all their City attackers is a bit mental - they are near the top of the league for a reason.

        And I see Spurs slipping

Id have 0.0 in the bank. I am three moves away from this team - at the moment I have Simpson, Skrtel and McClean instead of Walcott, Caulker and Shotton.

I cannot afford the Yak. Holt seems the best 5.2 optiopn out there, though I may change for Graham in a few weeks. Based on the midfield and striekrs I have, Id never really play Holt anyway - just a sub

This week Im not making a transfer so that I can potentially get this team for a hit (3 transfers). May have to buy Caulker this week if it looks like he is going to go up in price before deadline.

Figured Id have to get some points with that front 7 playing every week, and Evans, Lescott + Caulker/Shotton/Kelly. Mini league rival has Vorm and Bogdan and will play Vorm every week, so I could even start Caulker most weeks to cancel that out.

Many people have dumped him for Nani or Young. I thought he was as well, till I looked at his recent returns, the fact that he is carrying an injury and tbh looks tired. I think if you look at things closely you may see a correlation between City's dip in form and that of Silva.

I'm with you, think it's time for Shotton's return to my team.

Especially if Santon loses his place.

Assists and bonus would be what I'm looking for with clean sheets as a "bonus". The opposite to most other defenders!

      Aww thanks 🙂

My mini league rival had him for 9 and 8 points recently, so I know he is capable! And stoke can keep cleanies.

For one who is chasing (like me), a cheaper defence is surely priority so that you can throw everything forward? People like Kelly, Caulker, Shotton are therefore in my thoughts - Ill only be playing 1 of these a week and chances are one will have a reasonable home game!

Well Caulker and Shotton would have been absolute gold the past 2 weeks if you had them both. *ahhh Captain Hindsight*

I'll be getting one of them if not both before GW32. Was set on getting Caulker as he rotates beautifully till the end of the season...Shotton may come in for Enrique depending on Liverpools form. Would free up funds but we'll see!

ok guys pick an option to replace Taiwo and Ba in GW30/31

    a) Jags/Kaboul and Odem (or another striker for up to 8.8)

    b) Ridgwell and Ade

    Team atm is

    Schwarzer (Mingolet)

    Evans, Santon, Skrtel

    Bale, Young, Dempsey McLean, (Siggy)

    Ba, RvP, Rooney

Have 1.7 in the bank if it helps

Also an option, would leave me with the option of 7 million to replace McLean or 6.5 to replace Santon. Could draft in Jags or Kaboul as well then, with change to spare to replace Mclean. But double WBA?

indeed, bar Arsenal they do look good. Like I say below GW35 is the bad week. Would love your thoughts on the above dear, or any alternatives you care to offer.

that is true I'd only be inclined to play him GWs 32, 34, 36 and 37. But GW35 with a defence of Evans, Skrtel, Ridgwell, Jags and Caulker looks bad if I own Odem as well. I'd end up playing Evans, Caulker and one of Ridegwell or Skrtel.

Pretty much everyone in my ML owns Sess though, no one else owns McLean.

Edit I have just looked, all but 3 have now sold Sess.

Is Bale and Ade not overkill on Spurs?

Plus with Ade in there I could not afford McLean to Sess. I also think losing Santon might be a bigger priority. Maybe to Shotton?

Don't like that move. I will sell Koscielny to give me a Walcott option, Looking at Ridgewell, Caulker, Kelly ...

I have dropped Bale, and may fiddle about with Lennon.

what would you do with Santon then, keep? Selling Bale is an option if his returns don't pick back up. I had Silva in my team from GW1, never thought I'd sell him, but I've done just that, bar RvP and Rooney not sure anyone is safe. Maybe for Mata in GW32, he only performs at home, same as Clint, and they have perfect home and away rotation.

still leaves me with what to do about Bale. Do I keep for Spurs' good run or do I sell and for who? Would be 0.1 short for Mata right now and Ba is likely to drop again before next deadline.

Balo seems to be back in favour and is on pens (at least for now) but you never know when he might do something silly and get suspended, or get rested. It's a major risk, but then again so is anyone from City bar Kompany and Hart.

Tonight's Bayern-Basel second leg is a match that I've been looking forward too for a while. Hoffenheim were so poor on Saturday that it's hard to draw conclusions from the 7-1 thrashing. Bayern played with a slightly higher defensive line this time, but weren't that much different in formation to previous weeks when they've struggled.

The mental frailty issue remains a problem - if Bayern score in the first 20 minutes, then they'll go on and win clearly. If not, their predictable approach play means that they're having problems in breaking teams down.

Schweinsteiger came on a substitute against Hoffenheim after several weeks out with injury and played 32 uneventful minutes. Not sure whether he's ready for 90 minutes yet - or whether a defensive midfield combination of Schweinsteiger and Kroos would have the necessary solidity when trying to avoid an away goal. Possoble line-up:

Bayern Munich: Neuer - Lahm, Boateng, Badstuber, Alaba - Luiz Gustavo, Kroos (Schweinsteiger) - Robben, T. Müller, Ribéry - Gómez

Mario Gómez has recovered from an ankle injury, but right-back Rafinha is still struggling with a flu virus and trained separately on Monday. If he fails to recover, Lahm will switch to right-back and David Alaba will play on the left.

FC Basel had a similarly one-sided match at the weekend, with an easy 2-0 victory at ailing Grasshoppers Zürich that could have been much higher. Predcited line-up:

    Basel: Sommer - P. Degen, Dragović, Abraham, Steinhöfer/Park - Shaqiri, Huggel, G. Xhaka, F.Frei/Stocker - A. Frei, Streller

It's possible that Vogel will break up Basel's tried and tested back four, although this hasn't been announced yet. Philipp Degen has worked his way into the team at right-back and scored against GC at the weekend. Park has been struggling with fitness and could only do limited training last week. If he fails to recover, Steinhöfer will shift over to left-back for the Bebbi.

Basel's left midfield position is also up for grabs, with Fabian Frei, Valentin Stocker and Jacques Zoua fighting it out for a starting place. The latter two came on as substitutes in the first leg and combined for Basel's winning goal.

    SILVA

    3, 3, 1, 9, 8, 6, 2, 3, 5, 6, 0, 2.

That's 48 points in 12 games. Exactly 4 points per game. I don't know about you guys (LucasD) but my David Silva cost 10.4 and for that price I would expect more than that output.

    Averaging 4 isn't enough.

Who would you have to downgrade Silva to in order to do it? Still a half decent mid? If so then yes - I'd still do it. Rooney's points alone this weekend should make up for it. That said, if you can wait till after their Europa match I'd certainly hold off until at least Friday.

Yeah, I could get Valencia for example ... £8.0m or above ...

Problem is in defence I have R Taylor (doubt), Santon (Doubt), Taiwo (Dropped) but Santon could easily play this week and that transfer "could" wait.

Looking to get Valencia in soon myself, so it'd safe to say I think he's a good choice. However he's not guaranteed to play this week so it'd be a pretty risky gamble to bring him in when you haven't got a full selection of defenders. Up to you really, if you think it's worth it.

    Kelly/Skrtel/Enrique/Caulker/Evans
    Silva/Sess/Bale/Dempsey/Siggy
    Ba/Rvp/Rooney

I have the exact Money to do the following transfers (for a hit)
Silva - Young and Sess - Walcott

Don't really fancy Walcott for the weekend and would most likely bench him however I see it as quite a good investment long term and Arsenal have nice fixtures if I wait on it then likelyhood is I will be short to get them both in what do people think?

Can you do Sess > Walcott then Silva > Young the following week? Hits add up this end of the season.

Hmm, Bale to Theo in GW32 anyone. Will own Ade so Spurs coverage for their run is not an issue.

I wouldn't Bale on him so easily.

        Boom boom crash

Don't want to sell ideally, but would need to see evidence of his returns picking back up to justify his stay. Would ideally like to switch Mata in, but short of a Bale price rise, or a Mata or Ade fall I will be short on that.

            I hope so

My midfield of Young, Bale, Clint, McLean and Siggy currently fills me with joy. Young could easily become Tony V if needs be, allowing me to upgrade McLean and Santon.

Ahhhh you'll need City attacking cover. They're going to up their game very very soon.

Although as a United fan I can deal with no City coverage, makes it even easier to want them to fail.

chow do you decide who wins a group if 2 teams are tied? Is it gd, H2H results or a combination of the 2 (i.e gd in the H2H?)

As in the rules: "If 2 teams are level on points after the final group match then the h2h record (win/loss) between them will determine who qualifies for the knockout phase. If all 4 teams are tied on the same points after the final group match, the Points Difference (GD) will come into play, as it effectively takes into account all the matches."

                    First h2h record, then GD.

Someone earlier pointed out that he's only had one home game in the last 5 gameweeks, which helps to explain his poor output. But yeah, I'm worried too.
