Roberto Di Matteo confirms he intends to rotate the Chelsea squad for the remainder of the season. Kenny Dalglish reveals Charlie Adam has picked up a knee injury, Fabricio Coloccini could be back in a couple of weeks for Newcastle, Graham Dorrans might be available for West Brom this weekend, while Nikica Jelavic grabs another goal as Everton see off Sunderland in the FA Cup:

Chelsea’s Champions League lineup in Benfica was almost as eye-catching as their 1-0 win last night. Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba and Michael Essien were all benched, with the likes of Paolo Ferreira coming in from the cold to earn his third start of the season. Salomon Kalou vindicated his surprise inclusion by grabbing the winner for the Blues and, with FA Cup duties in addition to the race for a top four finish also playing on his mind, Roberto Di Matteo has admitted there’s going to be plenty rotation down Stamford Bridge way between now and the end of the season:

I’m involving everybody that is in the squad, rotating. We’ll need everybody until the end of the season. We cannot play with just 11 players. You’ll see other players who have maybe played a little less in the past playing more of a role in the future. It’s just impossible for us to play every three days and reach the fitness levels needed to win games.

Kenny Dalglish has revealed Charlie Adam is set to be sidelined with strained knee ligaments. While reports in the press have suggested the former Blackpool man could be out for the rest of the season after sustaining the injury in last week’s 3-2 defeat at QPR, the Liverpool boss is more optimistic on the outcome:

We know Charlie has strained knee ligaments but we still don’t know how long he will be out. He hasn’t had an operation and as it stands he’s not having one. It’s only been a week since he did it. He needs to rest it for another 10 days or so and then he will be reassessed. We’ll see how he is then and we’ll be in a better position to know when he will be back playing. We haven’t ruled him out for the rest of the season. We’re just waiting to see how he progresses.

Alan Pardew received some positive news on the hamstring injury suffered by Fabricio Coloccini in last Sunday’s 3-1 win over West Brom. Subbed off at half-time at the Hawthorns, the Magpies skipper was initially expected to be sidelined for three to four weeks but scans have revealed the problem isn’t bad as first feared, with the Argentine now perhaps missing just two matches (LIV, swa) before returning for the Gameweek 33 home clash against Bolton. With Steven Taylor likely out for the season, Pardew will be keen for a quick return for his captain, with James Perch favourite to slot in alongside Mike Williamson in Coloccini’s absence.

Graham Dorrans is set for a quick return from a hamstring injury this weekend as West Brom travel to Everton. The midfielder was missing for last weekend’s loss to Newcastle with a hamstring problem but looks set to be available for the Goodison showdown – with James Morrison out injured, Dorrans will be amongst a handful of names fighting for the role in the hole behind Marc-Antoine Fortune. Roy Hodgson received another injury boost with the news that Jerome Thomas trained yesterday; the winger was subbed off at half-time against the Magpies due to a hamstring problem. Chris Brunt is expected to train tomorrow for the first time this week; the Irishman has been struggling with a virus and was named on the bench last weekend, coming on as a replacement for Thomas.

Alex McLeish is contemplating a change of personnel and formation ahead of Chelsea’s visit to Villa Park this weekend. With Alan Hutton a major doubt and Charles N’Zogbia ruled out, McLeish is considering Eric Lichaj for a right-back role, while the form of Andreas Weimann may see the Villa boss shift to 4-4-2 in order to accommodate the young forward; certainly, with two goals in their last five, an up-front reshuffle looks a necessity for the toothless midlands outfit. The Villa boss is also sweating on the fitness of skipper Stiliyan Petrov – the Bulgarian has been unable to train all week due to a fever.

Nikica Jelavic was amongst the goals again for Everton last night as the Toffees saw off Sunderland to secure an FA Cup Semi Final showdown with Liverpool. With a couple of goals in just three league starts, the Croatian is gaining in popularity with Fantasy managers – over 6,000 have transferred him in this week – yesterday’s composed finish merely underlined his clinical ability in the opposition box and with form and fixtures (WBA, nor, SUN) on his side, the 5.9 priced forward could be set to produce over the next few weeks, as David Moyes engineers a climb up the table. Last night’s win means Everton’s Gameweek 34 clash with Stoke is currently postponed, though it’s possible the game could be rescheduled for a midweek slot, avoiding a blank in their upcoming schedule.

Owen Coyle is sweating on the availability of Darren Pratley, after the midfielder picked up an injury in last night’s FA Cup defeat at Spurs. The former Swansea man was subbed off with a large gash down the inside of his thigh at White Hart Lane and post-match, the Bolton boss revealed the worst case scenario could be a four to six week spell on the sidelines.

I'm looking forward to having nothing riding on the Liv Newc match.
1-1 with unowned scorers would do me fine.

It's funny how you look at Cahill's history for the last 6-7 weeks, you see he's started in all the GWs. People seem to forget there was an excuse for him to start each week.

The way fpl goes, I think I am expecting Liverpool to get an unexpected clean sheet this gw. With so many transfers out, how can they not disappoint us ? It's a tradition for the past few gws that just won't stop.

    Overview of this GW's fixtures.

    Aston Villa v Chelsea
Di Matteo has solidified the Chelsea defence, and they're playing one of the bluntest attacks in the league. On the other hand, Chelsea's attack isn't all that impressive either, lacking an in-form goalscorer. It's too laboured to break through in the centre, and doesn't have the talent on the wings to exploit the flanks where Villa aren't that strong. Villa upset a highly dysfunctional Chelsea away earlier in the season, but with Bent out for the season and relying on youth striker Weimann for goals, it's hard to see a repeat.
    Prediction: 0-1

    Everton v West Brom
Despite every FPL manager's worst nightmare this season, Everton have pulled out a decent run. Playing a solid 4-5-1 with new boy Jelavic finally providing a goalscoring outlet, they look tight in defence and midfield. Brom's highly impressive form has come to an end, with the reshuffles to accommodate returning players a possible factor, and the loss of Morrison will also be keenly felt. At the same time, the 3 goals they conceded to Newcastle were more the product of clinical attacking than abject defending. Their away form is also notably good, and their attacking potential can't be overlooked.
    Prediction: 1-1

    Fulham v Norwich
Fulham produced a surprisingly solid away performance to United. The first half goal punished one of their only defensive mistakes in the half. As ever, Fulham pass through the centre, with United's increasing chances in the second half exploiting Fulham's weakness on the flanks. Norwich have a similar central passing game. It's possible the two teams will cancel each other out, though Norwich haven't picked up that many clean sheets. Fulham's home form should see them through.
    Prediction: 1-0

    Man City v Sunderland
City are much stronger at home than away, as illustrated by their 1-0 loss to Sunderland away, albeit after dominating the game and conceding to what felt like the only Mackem chance in the game. City's strength is attacking through the centre with fullbacks providing the width. Sunderland, on the other hand, use wingers McClean and Larsson to bombard the box with crosses. The battle between the City fullbacks and Sunderland's dynamic duo will be key. Sunderland seek to use possession well as opposed to dominate it, while City on occasion do the opposite. Expect City to absolutely lay siege to the Wearsiders' goal. Having had far more rest than Sunderland, who have defensive injuries, expect this to tell.
    Prediction: 3-0

    QPR v Arsenal
QPR have an awful defence, end of. Arsenal's attack on the other hand has been utterly rejuvenated in recent weeks and should be looking to score a few. Arsenal should burn QPR on the flanks with possible winger-fullback combinations of Walcott and Sagna and Gervinho and Gibbs. Rosicky's mysterious footballing resurrection has also given them another option in the centre, and covering all these bases looks impossible for the Londoners (unless Ramsey starts). Having just dropped captain Joey Barton, QPR's midfield looks no closer to delivering the attacking threat they need to stay up. While relegation may provide motivation to put up a struggle, it would be a surprise if it wasn't in vain.
    Prediction: 0-4

    Wigan v Stoke City
Neither side is renowned for their goalscoring, a point accentuated by particularly bad home and away records for the respective teams. Wigan play an unusual 3-5-2/5-3-2 to cover the flanks and whip crosses in, a strategy Stoke are no strangers to, though with a bog standard 4-4-2. The sides could well cancel each other out.
    Prediction: 0-0

    Wolves v Bolton
Wolves' defence gives sieves a bad name. In the 5-0 defeat to United, in which United didn't even attack particularly well, there were several goals without even the most basic of marking. The Bolton attack has improved somewhat, coincident with the rise of Miyaichi, and their defence, while not favoured for a clean sheet, is not as catastrophic as it used to be, again suspiciously coincident with the departure of Gary Cahill. They may have an outside chance of a clean sheet here against a struggling attack.
    Prediction: 0-2

    Newcastle v Liverpool
Newcastle are particularly strong at home. With Ben Arfa and Cisse in sparkling form they will pose serious goal threat to a Liverpool defence compromised by the absence of Agger and the presence of Carragher. Whether Agger returns will be key to whether Liverpool can take anything from this match. Their attack has improved when Gerrard and Suarez play together, and against a gutted Newcastle defence - Coloccini out, Raylor a doubt, Santon dropped and possibly relying on a nightmare CB pairing of Perch and Williamson - you have to fancy Liverpool to score. There could be goals here.
    Prediction: 2-2

    Tottenham v Swansea
Tottenham have imploded in recent gameweeks. Attacking threat has been blunted and serious pressure placed upon the defence. It's hard to ignore the possibility that the arrival of Saha and the switch to a dedicated 2-striker system has affected their ability to control the midfield, with effects on both. Bale flourished earlier in the season when given license to roam into the centre; the change of system has pushed him further out wide and affected both the individual and collective performance. Swansea on the other hand have a notorious focus on passing and possession, and offer threat both in the centre with Sigurdsson and on the flanks with Sinclair and Dyer. Spurs are similar with VDV and Modric in the centre and Bale out wide, with Lennon's absence on the other flank keenly felt. An intriguing midfield battle awaits. Both defences are competent and it could be a very tight affair. With the battle lines drawn on the flanks, the fullbacks could decide this match - especially the attack-crazy BAE and Rangel.
    Prediction: 1-1

    Blackburn v Man Utd
United's shock home loss to Blackburn is one of those results that is very difficult not to classify as a one-off. United were missing several key players, to the extent that Rafael was playing in central midfield. This, at least, is probably not going to be repeated on Monday. With a virtually clean bill of health for both sides, United should be able to control the central midfield with the steadying influences of Carrick and Giggs/Scholes - something they miserably failed to do against Blackburn. Pressed by possibly the most aggressive wingers and fullbacks in the league, Blackburn's defence should crumble. They have little problem attacking against the best sides, though - something best kept in check by retaining possession.
    Prediction: 1-4

It's a well written post. But I don't see either Arsenal or Utd winning my such margins away. Newcastle-Liverpool could even swing the 0-0 way
I also had my armband fixed with Dempsey but now am doubting myself. Do you not see Fulham running riot (no offence, but for fulham a 3-0 is a good enough riot for me) under any circumstance?

Yeah they the big away wins for United and Arsenal are going out on a limb. They just seem to be up against sides that seem happier to attack than defend and probably don't give the latter enough respect, particularly against a big side.

Fulham could score more, the reason I predicted them so low was that it looks pretty tight in the centre because both sides like to play there, and both often play with effectively only one striker.

I'm also thinking Dempsey has lost some goals to Pog... annoying really, I was hoping to keep him for longer...

I wouldn't disagree with that, think QPR are being a bit less credit than they are due.

Okay there are problems, but it's also highlighted by how many of those games they have only had 10 players (for the majority of the match on most occasions).

The one thing they will miss is Cisse for goals though.

I wouldn't be shocked if they took something off Arsenal, but also Arsenal do have the "potential" to go 4-0, just don't think it's assured like a lot think.

Always a risk, the 4-0 is going out on a limb. But QPR seem to have discipline problems too and there's no steady selections in defence. In recent weeks they've conceded to everyone, including teams that normally struggle to score...

How many clean sheets have Arsenal actually kept lately? Sure they score goals, but if you factor in the ridiclous offside call agaisnt Everton, their defence hasnt exactly been Unitedesque...

They've got closer to a first choice back four of late and that has made a difference in the number of goals conceded. I'd agree City and United are comfortably better CS hopes than Arsenal. In this particular match though I see QPR losing the midfield battle and with that a decent chance of scoring. With Barton dropped their midfield looks even thinner than usual. Djibril out won't help matters.

      Cracking post Isacki.
Spurs 'implosion' has more causes than just Saha IMO. Missing Lennon has pulled us completely out of balance. We've also had a torrid fixture schedule. I expect us to beat Swansea and VdV in particular has looked an absoloute menace in the past few weeks. God know who we will play out right thougyh. I'd play Kranjcar there even though he isn't all that good it does give balance.

          Well I am a Spud 😛

I really think despite the tough love on this website Gareth has been doing well. I don't actually agree with him playing through the centre though and definitely not on the right. The left is where he belongs ( see both games vs Inter last year for a reason why). With Caulker out and Williams too? ( heard that somewhere) I think Swansea could be missing a bit of defensive cohesion. We absolutely battered Bolton yesterday - Bogdan MOTM in a 3-1 loss - and this could be the confidence booster we needed. I really feel despite the Swans possession game they could be in for a nasty surprise.

          No bias, I swear 🙂

Could be turning the corner. I think Bale's played fairly well too of late. I do agree he's got to play on the left (he's not actually a central attacking midfielder) but he needs the freedom to cut inside and that seems to have reduced since Saha arrived.

Your point about Caulker and possibly Williams being out is a good one... could upgrade Spurs to a win 😉

Getting to cup semi's should be a good confidence boost also, for them to kick back on again (the previous fixtures have been hard aswell, even Stoke was immediately after Muamba incident).

I honestly hate BAE haha. He gives me a heartattack every game. Also strongly blame him or the derby annihilation - Sagnas ball came from his side, his clearance which went to RVP for the equalizer, and Rosicky and Walcotts second half strikes all originated down our left side defence.

Irrelevant in this though. I think looking at our recent PL run a 1-1 draw seems a fair pick, but to sound cliche, you can't judge a book by it's cover

For the "ALWAYS CAPTAIN RVP" brigade.

Just checked and was surprised I have only captained RVP once since GW14.

Just checked the scores of my captains and only on 4 occasions did he actually beat my captain choice.

RVP has got 105 points over that period, my choice has got 134.

Now if only my general purchases had been as good as my captain choices over that period I would be laughing with my overall rank 🙂

For the past 27 GWs (starting from GW4) I've captained RVP with these 6 exceptions:

      GW10: VDV (c) 10 pts pre-double, RVP 19 pts
      GW16: VDV (c) 7 pts pre-double, RVP 2 pts
      GW20 (tottenham DGW): Bale (c) 12 pts pre-double, RVP 2 pts
      GW 26: Ba (c) 2 pts pre-double, RVP 8 pts
      GW27: Ba (c) -1 pts pre-double, RVP 13 pts
      GW29: Ba (c) 2 pts pre-double, RVP 5 pts

Yes I've got myself a couple of 2-pointers from RVP also but they don't mind that much. What pisses me off is when I try to be smart and change captaincy to someone else & it doesn't work.

      Always captain RVP.

In fairness I generally always captain a homer. So I would only consider him every other.

The main one there was RVP away to Chelsea. Was a shocker and I had captained him quite a few weeks leading up to that, but didn't even really consider him for that game.

I tend to go with a midfielder and in fact looking now, I've always done the best when captaining a midfielder.

Bale it is for the weekend 😀

Ok folks still can't decide what to do for GW32 + 33

Am getting De Gea in for Schwarzer

    I will then have

    De Gea, Mingolet

    Evans, Skrtel, Verm, Caulker, Santon

    Theo, Bale, Dempsey, Siggy, McClean

    RvP, Rooney, Yak

Can't decide if I should keep Clint, drop him for VdV or Nasri and keep Yak

or drop him to Miyachi/Barfa and use the money to swap Santon to Baines or Yak to Ade/Aguero/Tevez

Is Baines in that defence overkill?

I think VDV/Bale JK. Yak remains fantastic value for that 3rd stiker spot and there are not many strikers apart from obvious who are getting points. I think Yak should stay for the season, with his tough fixtures you have option to play 5 in mid or 4 at back as Caulker has some great fixtures soon.

Doing Dempsey--->Miyaichi etc makes the team too imbalanced for me.

Mata is just out of reach, Nasri is certainly a possibility.

Valencia is also out as De Gea/Evans/Rooney is my chosen trio. My keeper rotation is annoying me, so I am buying De Gea to play every week bar the derby, and Mingolet has (BOL) that week.

wish there was a seperate captains poll just for the scouts for us to reference every week.. even though there are just 10 of them will give a better idea of who to captain in 50-50 situations like last week, or the 4+ captain choices for this week.. will stop a lot of X vs X for captain debates and kneejerks on saturday mornings.. or even the scout picks could have a captain like tfpl

What makes you think that scout members pick would better captains? Out of the first 4 in the members cup this week , 2 picked rvp and the other 2 picked rooney. Some weeks of course have been exceptional like when Mark and Granville picked RVP despite him playing another top 4 team and made us look like fools. But most of the times it's pretty a similar ratio to the current captain poll. Hardly gonna be different.
If you do want to see the scout picks with a captain just log on to total fpl. This captain is almost always gonna be the same as the leader of the captain poll.

maybe that's because this year the performances have been unexpected. surely if we had c.ronaldo playing in the epl we know who would win week in week out.

I have been on this site for around 5-6 years now, still not a member (betting's illegal in India, so no point of investing for me) and there is no way you can treat a new user separately. It horrifies me when there are posts here from some people who haven't made a transfer for the past 5-6 gws and expect a magic solution from this community but some of the new users have been excellent posters this year.

Captain thoughts. Pure stats, not the most important things sometimes but nice to see.

Bale has averaged 6.84 points per game at home this season.
Dempsey has averaged 6.86 points per game at home this season.
Rooney has averaged 5.84 points per game away from home this season.
Van Persie has averaged 6.93 points per game away from home this season.

Pretty much shows it doesn't matter who you captain this week.

That means Sigurdsson get's rights over McClean and Senderos may be risked over someone else as Norwich aren't scoring away from home....think their extended honeymoon period of playing well in the PL may finally have expired. I'm really trying to second guess the implications of Nani returning to united.

Valencia is flying and ridiculously cheap

Young has been playing well but seemed to be having to hang back when evra burst forward.

Young arguably more assured of a place out of the three, with nani and val rotated? i think fergie played valencia over nani last season at the end.

so hard to tell.... with evans and rooney, that last united player selection is key.

Some would say Valencia is currently Utds best player... I thought he was awesome again on Monday night. I seriously can't see SAF rotating him, now it's only the league to play for. Personally I think it's between Young and Nani for the other wing, I didn't think Young was great on Monday.

I agree that it is possible that Nani or Young outscores Valencia. However, given the price differential and the fact that Valencia has the best chance at playing time, although I don't think he's as bullet proof as people here would like to think, I don't see why you wouldn't go with Valencia unless you were desperately chasing a lead. And in that case I would take Nani because I think he has the highest upside.

no one knows. There's a possibility that many could be rescheduled during the same gameweek. If Chelsea go through to the CL semi finals their game will most likely have to be moved to another gameweek.

not fancy of marseille. trust me, marseille will loose tonight, their best players (keeper and forwards) are suspended for the keeper and very doubtful for the forwards.
they took 3 points on their last 8 games.
the keeper will be the third keeper of marseille, and hasn't played since january 2011

Hi Guys, some suny a'noon q's for you:

    - Is Micah to Verm; Enrique to Distin worth a hit? I could just get distin in for enrique this week (hoping micah goes points crazy) and get verm in next?
    - My rival is now 90 points ahead which is a really big lead with only 8 weeks to go. Should I start going for medium-high risk captain choices already or wait a bit? Namely, I'm sure he will cap RVP or Roon (I have both) but I'm thinking of going for walcott instead as he doesn't have him and if it goes anything like this week would be a big result. RVP could tear it up and then I'll be in trouble but I need differentials now otherwise he will walk away with it.

    Thoughts?

Micah should play this week so I'd hold off on that one, I like Distin in for Enrique. I'd probably avoid getting too cute on the captain choices just yet, you can still make up big ground getting the right one from RVP/Rooney - this week was a case in point.

Does anyone use the tactic of rotating between players who have home games esp. in midfield or attack?

McClean's recent home returns are 6,8,7,7,2,12
Dempsey's recent home returns are 20,9,5,15,2
With Sunderland and Fulham having 100% H/A rotation these might be worth having and rotating esp. as they're pretty strong at home and weak away from home.

    Other 100% H/A rotations are:
Che, Sun, Wba, Nor, Swa, Sto
    have 100% H/A rotation with
Avl, Bla, Ful, New, Wol, Qpr

    Ars, Bol, Liv, Man U
    have 100% H/A rotation with
    Eve, Man C, Spurs, Wig

I suppose the cheaper options for a rotator with McClean are: Pederson, Ireland, HBA, Jarvis, Taarabt. Not a very inspiring bunch really.

    Mignolet - Bogdan
    Vermaelen - Cahill - BAE - Evans - Caulker
    Yaya - Walcott - Valencia - Bale - Sigurdsson
    Rooney - RVP - Jelavic

Think he takes account of potential DGWs to come and fairly solid fixtures/rotation
