As all but one away side takes the early advantage in the UEFA Champions League (UCL ) Quarter Finals, we have our usual rundown of the first-leg action for our budding crop of European Fantasy managers…

Chelsea Take First Blood

In the pre-match press conference prior to this first leg tie, Frank Lampard talked about how Chelsea could be better. Interim manager Roberto Di Matteo clearly agreed with the England midfielder and left him on the bench with old stalwart Didier Drogba as, among others, Fernando Torres and Salomon Kalou were given the chance to improve matters.

Ninety minutes later, Di Matteo was beaming from ear to ear as Chelsea managed to come away from the Estadio da Luz as 1-0 victors and with a firm grip on this Champions League tie at the half-way stage.

It ended up being the two most decisive selection choices, Fernando Torres and Salomon Kalou, who earned Chelsea victory; the former, breaking in space behind the Benfica defence, chipped a cross for his Ivorian team-mate to slide home. A fourth assist of the campaign also pushes the Spaniard up to third in Champions League provider’s chart this year.

A clean sheet for the visitors will also have done the world of good for Chelsea ahead of the second leg back at Stamford Bridge. Our man David Luiz notched those extra four points (and another for 6 recovered balls) to keep on track with Sergio Ramos as the joint highest scoring defender to date.

Bayern Set Sights On The Semis

As we mentioned in our Preview of the Quarter Finals, Marseille came into their home tie with Bayern Munich on the back of some torrid form. A 0-2 defeat at the hands of the German outfit is perhaps not too surprising, then.

The hosts’ performance was not particularly befitting of the shambolic form in the preceding months; indeed, Marseille have every reason to be more than aggrieved at the situation leading up to Bayern’s first goal last night.

While stand-in, and third choice, goalkeeper Elinton Andrade afforded Mario Gomez an easy chance to top up his already healthy season’s total in the Champions League (11 and counting) it was a handball down at the other end of the park just before Bayern broke away, missed by the referee, which had the French side up in arms.

Loic Remy threatened on occasion, while Nicolas N’Koulou and Stephane Mbia picked up a couple of points for recovered balls, but Wednesday night was all about Arjen Robben. The Dutchman had a hand in both his side’s goals, providing an assist for Gomez, before concocting a sweet one-two with Thomas Mueller to score the second goal. Franck Ribery, back at his old club, was the only of Munich’s attacking quadrant not to get in on the action last night.

Real Madrid Upset The APOEL Cart

It’s fair to say Madrid were dominant in Tuesday night’s showdown in Cyprus. The stats speak for themselves; FC APOEL could only manage 30% possession, completing just 46% (147) of the passes they attempted – compared to Real’s 81% (660) – and failed to muster a single shot all game.

The home side have exceeded all expectations to get this far but appear to have finally reached their apex, as they more than met their match with Jose Mourinho’s Spanish band of buccaneers.

After over 70 minutes of solid and staunch defending, the gates finally crumbled and FC APOEL conceded the first of three Real Madrid goals and began their long gracious farewell to this tournament of champions.

Karim Benzema fluffed a golden chance earlier in the game but the French striker more than atoned, notching a double for the La Liga leaders. Benzema’s second was his 25th career Champions League goal and set a new record for the quickest number of games (41) to reach that total, eclipsing the previous record held by Lionel Messi.

Kaka, meanwhile, proved to an instrumental substitution, as he not only scored the other Madrid goal, but set up the Frenchman for the first with a pitch perfect cross.

Technically, of course, the tie is only half-way done but the eulogy on APOEL’s campaign is already being written. With a pressing La Liga tie against Valencia to follow the second leg for Madrid, however, rotation may yet be at the forefront of Mourinho’s mind next week.

Milan Hold Barcelona To A Standstill

AC Milan produced a steely performance at the back to keep Barcelona at bay at the San Siro. The visitors could or should have been awarded a penalty, but it’s nothing to take away from the performance of the Milanese back four.

As the stats show -this is the first time in the Guardiola era that Barca haven’t scored an away goal in a UCL knockout tie- it is no mean feat keeping Lionel Messi and company at bay.

As far as our European Fantasy managers are concerned, however, it was actually the Barcelona defence that managed to pick up the greater amount of points. Dani Alves gained 2 extra “recovered ball” points, while his team-mate Gerard Pique soaked up the recoveries, sixteen in total, to pocket three extra points- the equivalent of an assist.

Many folks who passed their Fantasy captaincy from Cristiano Ronaldo to Lionel Messi this week will undoubtedly be disappointed that the world’s number one and two both failed to produce the points. There is some solace to be had that most managers will be sharing in this unfortunate situation in Matchday Nine, in what was a rare off-day for both players.

The game hangs finely in the balance heading back to Camp Nou. It was a score draw for Milan in the group stages; if they can replicate that, then the Semi-Finals beckon.

My question for FFS, I'm transferring Nani out this week. To me the logical option is Walcott, but I think Young could be going under the radar with Valencia fit.

Not too keen on Dempsey really, Fulham have frustrated me recently so I'm slowly getting rid of them all. The only reason I wouldn't want Young is if Valencia impacts on his returns, which is possible.

Looking at playing 4 at the back for the DGW, I can see Chelsea, Spurs & Pool keeping at least one if not two cleanies. Going for Friedel & BAE double up could be a possibility and keeping Enrique seems a bit more likely, for Chelsea I may go Cahill while a cleanie for Caulker seems likely at home to Wolves.

Meanwhile in midfield Bale,Mata & Miyaichi seem like my main targets, Bale I already have and Mata sems to feature in pretty much all Chelsea's games, compared to Lampard who could possibly be rested for one of the DGW ties.

Up top it looks like I won't invest in anyone and play Wazza and RVP for the DGW and bench Yak, I can't see Cisse getting anything and Yak,Waz & RVP all play in GW34, so it sounds sensible.

I am looking at playing Skrtel, Kaboul and Cashley at the back

Theo, Bale, Ryo and Siggy/McClean in mid

      Pig, RvP, Ade up front.

If I could be sure that Cahill or Luiz would start both games I'd get one of them and then get Mata for Theo.

That's exactly what he's done. No wonder the Villa fans were outraged when he went there. Totally killed the way that Villa play the game. Obviously selling Young and Downing is going to make a noticeable difference but the whole style of play and mentality just points to a Birmingham relegation scrap.

CL Group G: Matchday 6 Preview

Group G started off the tourney with their managers' cunning ploying to draw in this group and avoiding the top seeded managers. We should have known then! This group was going to be closely battled and going all the way down to the wire. A group that comprises of a large amount of present and ex-deadzoners. On one hand, you have Zenit who keeps producing consistent scores to deliver the goods and on the other hand you have FC Porto who've been fairly extreme with their scoring. APOEL have surprised everyone to pull off 2 victories and one of the best comebacks of the tourney have come from Shakthar. As things stand, all 3 coveted spots are up for grabs and all the 4 managers still in the race.

For the record, here's how the group will be decided:
    1) Higher the points, higher the position.
    2) If 2 teams are tied on the same points, then it goes down to h2h record (win/loss)
    3) If the h2h record is the same, then it goes to Overall GD. If its still tied, then we go to away points scored in the matches between the tied teams.
    4) When 3 or more teams are tied on the same points, the Overall GD is taken into consideration.
    5) The group winner & runners-up qualify for the knock-outs and the 3rd spot qualifies for Round 2 of the Europa League.

Let's explore the qualification scenarios for Group G then!

Zenit: An away win/draw against Porto will see them top the group. A loss could still them qualify for the knock-outs if Apoel defeats Shakhtar, which would mean Zenit goes above Apoel on a superior h2h record of 2-0. If Shakhtar defeats Apoel following a Zenit loss, that would mean a Europa spot for Zenit due to their inferior h2h record over Shakhtar.

Porto: A favorite to qualify from the group, a home win will see them qualify to the knock-outs as group winners. A loss could see them qualify if Shakhtar defeats Apoel (based on a superior h2h record over Shakhtar) or Shakhtar loses by a small margin to Apoel, thereby preserving their superior GD over Apoel. Porto will have to contend with a Europa spot only if Apoel defeats Shakhtar, Zenit defeats Porto and the overall difference in GD of 18 points (9 - -9) is made up by Apoel in the process.

Apoel: Apoel is up against it, as they have face Shakhtar at home in a must-win clash. If Apoel is to qualify, they will have to defeat Shakhtar, hope that Zenit defeats Porto and make up on the difference in GD of 18 points (9 - -9) in the process. In such a scenario, if the GD isn't made up, it would see them secure the Europa spot. Following a win against Skakhtar, Porto defeating Zenit would mean that Zenit would qualify for the knock-outs due to a superior h2h record. A loss would see the surprise package in Apoel crash out of Europe. A draw would see them secure the Europa spot.

Shakhtar: Despite a rough start to the tourney, Shakhtar still has a good chance of making it to the knock-outs. They will have to win against Apoel and hope that Porto defeats Zenit, in which case Shakhtar will qualify based on a superior h2h record of 2-0 over Zenit. Following a win against Apoel, a win/draw for Zenit will mean Shakhtar will have to contend with a Europa spot due to Porto's superior h2h record over Shakhtar. A loss/draw would see them crash out of Europe.

    Predictions:

Porto vs Zenit - Zenit has already provided Porto with an 8-point head-start. Those transfers could be crucial with the teams expected to line-up fairly similar. The big clash here could be in midfield with Dempsey facing the mighty Yaya. I fancy Porto's home support to give them a narrow home win unless the captain's pick makes a big role.

Apoel vs Shakhtar - Apoel has a fairly stable team whereas Shakhtar will need to utilize their 1 FT for the week to get a 3rd defender for the week. Once again, the big clash could be Valencia/Skrtel vs Young/Vermaelen. But you'd expect Shakhtar to gamble his captain's punt (or maybe not?). Verdict - A narrow away win could be on the cards to pull off Shakhtar's amazing recovery.

This group should be one to watch out for, with the Apoel & Shakhtar needing destiny to play a role apart from their own performances. Well, as we near the weekend, all I can say is - May the odds be always in your favor 😉
