[sbu_large_image] Spot the Differential

Thursday’s double Gameweek announcements certainly stirred the pot, confirming some incoming blanks whilst handing us an extra roll of the dice in Gameweek 36. With our squads are under greater scrutiny, this might just be the time to break up the template and take a punt. Friday’s delivery of “differentials” is timely, then, packaging something different for the weekend for every Fantasy budget…

Shaun Maloney

Wigan’s forgotten man for much of this season, Shaun Maloney has crash landed back onto the scene and his penalty last weekend was just rewards for a succession of sterling performances at the heart of midfield. Ok he isn’t the most glamorous of picks, but as a 4.5 regular starter with a consistent attacking threat and penalties to boot, Maloney would make a great choice for a fifth midfielder in a Wigan side desperate for points.

The Latics are deservedly in the relegation zone this season but you should never underestimate the Fantasy potential of a team fighting to stay afloat, as Liverpool found out to their cost last weekend. Fixtures stiffen up considerably after this weekend’s home tie against Stoke, but they do offer the bonus of playing in Gameweek 36 when many other sides miss a week, so Maloney’s value could come into play as a sub even if you bench him for their difficult run.

Steven Pienaar

Everton struggled to deliver any kind of consistent attacking threat in the early stages of this season but the reunion of Leighton Baines and Pienaar on the left, and the introduction of Nikica Jelavic up front, has rejuvenated Moyes’ men. Such was their dominance at Swansea and Sunderland recently that they could easily have won either game by a three or even four goal scoreline had they taken their chances and they are brimming with confidence right now.

The South African has been given more freedom to roam than last season and his relationship with Baines will surely provide the key supply line to the in-form Jelavic when a wounded West Brom arrive at Goodison this weekend.

Carlos Tevez

It would require a huge leap of faith (or desperation) to spend 11.7m on the Argentinian loose cannon at this early stage, but there are precious few players in the league with the same explosive potential as Carlos Tevez. With just 0.6% ownership in the Fantasy Premier League game, you can virtually guarantee none of your rivals will have him and with a home tie against stuttering Sunderland up next, a repeat of one of last season’s mega hauls is optimistic, but definitely a possibility.

Mancini admitted in today’s press conference that Tevez is unlikely to start this weekend, but we’re not so sure. Aguero has been ruled out with a ‘stupid’ injury and Mario Balotelli’s midweek antics are also is also expected to count him out. That leaves just Tevez and the big Bosnian as options up front and although a 45/45 split is probably the likeliest scenario, there is a Tevez-shaped hole in the City attack that he will be desperate to fill.

RVP who 40pt leader will captain or Dempsey who leader doesn't have?

Basically play it safe and stay around the 40pt mark maybe make up some points from the differential players, or take a gamble on Dempsey and potentially halve the gap but potentially fall further back if RVP goes crazy...

Very true, too much of a risk on Dempsey now and even if he scores big you've still got the points he doesn't, win-win situation really.

I've worked so hard to get the gap down to only 40 don't want to piss it away. Not captaining RVP for 3 weeks has been tense but I've got away with it and it's paid off big time. He's due a big haul anyway. I've captained him at all the right times recently.

Anyway if Dempsey scores well he's still a differential so will help close the gap 🙂

Siggy has but he's playing GW34 and has generally fantastic fixtures, so well worth keeping him. Can always get rid of him if he's doing bad to the lead up of GW36 for a player with a DGW.

Verm is in the same sort of situation too. He's been playing great, along with Arsenal as a whole and they have some very nice fixtures - including GW34 home against Wigan. I might well draft him in soon then out for the DGW though.

I'm not sure how much you have seen of Silva lately but he is totally spent and playing with an ankle injury to boot. Holding onto him at this point is just asking for trouble imo.

Ba has almost become a winger since Cisse came into the team and is taking way less shots at goal so I dunno what stat you're using to put him over Cisse right now.

Good evening folks, here's the deal:

Im back 34pts of my minileague leader. Differentials this week are:

HIM: enrique, kelly, simpson, young, adebayor

ME: verm, kompany, valencia, siggy, ba

He is captaining RVP, should i match this and let my differentials try to make up ground, or take a risk on the pig/ demps/ bale??

    Opinions greatly appreciated 🙂

I'd captain the player who I think would score most points. If you're confused between 2 players and RVP is one of them, then you should go RVP. Good differentials there should see you cut the difference.

I have a similar dilemma and I think you have to captain RVP. Getting any further behind if he gets a huge haul will sting badly and plus, you have a decent set of differentials.

Is captaining Valencia too much of a risk? Leader will definitely go for Rooney and 3rd place will go for RVP. 3 of us are separated by only 10 points and we have all 3 players. And Dempsey.

first time poster but long time reader 🙂

i'm in a rather unique situation as opposed to the rest. trying to get rooney so have to choose a defender between taiwo, onouha, steinsson, weater or boring kelly (fulham). seeing that all the available options tend to concede, i'm going for the one with more attacking returns. what do you guys reckon?

You could go Kelly though, I have him and out of choice as well. Get Taiwo otherwise.

cheers mate, i'm playing the espn soccernet game so it's a bit out of context at times. i'm doing pretty well (99.6 percentile) but the platform sucks. defo switching to the official one next season.

i'm a bit concerned that taiwo won't play when traore comes back. got stung by that a few weeks ago and sold him 🙁

You could switch now also. You could play the bottom 5 league for the next 6-7 GWs and switch to the mainstream next year maybe. Also, I would recommend Kelly as I said, but I don't think Taiwo was loaned out to be played on the bench.

I'd really like to know what constitutes a generic team versus another.

Fine by me as well mate. Generic is like when your players have been, generally, chosen by a lot of FFS members. Taking your team, for example, apart from Cahill no one is quite a 'differential' so to speak, meaning mostly everyone has the other player like Walcott, Demps, Bale et al.
Keep in mind though, a generic team is by no means bad, or something to fret about. Firstly the team is generic only on FFS, so they could still be differentials in your minileagues depending on their level of awareness. Also, a non generic (read punty) team could score much lesser, disastrously lesser in fact than a generic team on a given day. So that should sum it up for you. 🙂
