Four UEFA Champions League (UCL) Quarter-Finals were decided over the last two nights, with each of the second-leg hosts progressing to the next round. Before we start planning our transfers, there are enough talking points for us to consider…

Chelsea Make Hard Work Of Benfica

The fact of the matter is that after a 2-1 victory over Benfica at Stamford Bridge last night, Chelsea will continue to fly the flag for the Premier League after progressing to the Semi-Finals. The underlying story of the tie and what lies ahead is an altogether different narrative.

A barge on Ashley Cole in the box by Javi Garcia allowed Frank Lampard to fire the hosts ahead, before Maxi Pereira saw red for Benfica after picking up two bookings prior to half-time. Before the spot-kick, and even with a man’s disadvantage, Benfica were very much the stronger of the two sides on the turf. As Chelsea huffed and puffed, the visitors showed a more pragmatic and coherent approach to the game, despite having the odds stacked against them.

Garcia atoned for his earlier error by heading home in the 80th minute, after being afforded the freedom of the Chelsea six yard box from a corner. Another goal would have clinched qualification for the Portuguese outfit but an injury time breakaway saw Raul Meireles fire home to finally seal the Blues’ progress.

A majorly hectic schedule -as alluded to in our behemoth post from yesterday– will now see Roberto Di Matteo’s side undertake seven fixtures in three weeks, including at least one major FA Cup game, two ties with Barcelona and a trip to Arsenal.

The Semi-Finals and Fantasy Premier League double Gameweek 36 may end up being an oasis on the horizon to Managers in all formats. Rotation across all three competitions must loom large and many investment opportunities will carry an added risk. Not least because it’s reigning champions Barcelona coming up next in the UCL.

Barcelona Make More History

Prior to Tuesday night’s fixture, there was a surprising amount of support for AC Milan to pull off somewhat of a coup and come away from the Nou Camp with a place in the Champions League Semi-Finals. After a goalless San Siro draw in the first leg and, with a 2-2 draw at the Camp Nou in the group stages, perhaps it wasn’t the most preposterous prediction to make but Barcelona were more than able to fend off their opponents in a penalty-spot inspired 3-1 victory.

It was, of course, “that man” Lionel Messi at the crux of the matter in all three goals. The Argentine was first felled (an extra UCL point) for a penalty which he duly converted before Antonio Nocerino pulled a goal back for the visitors and turned the heat up on the tie.

Not long after, the referee caught an evil glare from the Milanese dugout and traveling supporters when he correctly, but arguably softly, awarded a second penalty to Barca for some light shirt tugging in the box, as the home side attacked a corner. Then, in the second half, Andres Iniesta calmly slotted home to round out the tie, when Messi’s shot deflected right into his path.

The reigning champions also picked up a new record along the way and have become the first side to reach five consecutive Champions League semi-finals, affording them a “rematch” with Chelsea in the next round.

Marseille Flounder Against Bayern Lite

It is surprising to precisely no-one that Marseille have finally bitten the dust and departed the Champions League. The writing has been on the wall for such a long time that, building off their 2-0 away win in France, Bayern Munich even took the chance to give Arjen Robben and Mario Gomez a break.

For any European Fantasy managers willing to take a risk with their transfers in light of this pre-deadline news, there was plenty of potential to pick up some points your rivals might not have been aware of. The Germans, even without their two strongest players, once again waltzed to a 2-0 victory.

Building on Marseille’s poor attacking performances over the last two months, Fantasy managers who stocked up on the Munich defenders would have been able to bank multiple returns from the likes of Holger Badstuber, Manuel Neuer, captain Philip Lahm and company.

European Fantasy managers playing to the team-sheets, however, will have had the chance to buy a striker from tracks less trodden. Thomas Mueller would have been expected to step into the limelight but just 40 minutes on the pitch and a single point will leave his backers – including our very own Granville – reeling.

Forgotten forward Ivica Olic, making only his fourth start of the season, was the man to profit, scoring both of the German outfit’s goals and helping the 786 folks who acquired his services pocket a cool and “very differential” 10 points for his night’s work.

So Long, Farewell

Real Madrid took the opportunity, much like Munich, to rest some of their first choice outfit (Mesut Ozil, Xabi Alonso and Karim Benzema to name but a few) for their home tie with FC APOEL. Even with that trio out of the picture, the La Liga leaders still had the two most expensive players in history to call on and help them waltz through to the Semi-Finals.

Cristiano Ronaldo was able to add a couple of goals to his rather bountiful tally for the season and Kaka – having been afforded a start by Jose Mourinho – continued his slow renaissance, providing a goal and assist to match his Portuguese team-mate for Fantasy points.

Two substitutes returning from injury, Jose Callejon and Angel Di Maria, also got on the score sheet and reminded folks that there will be other options out there. As Madrid took their foot off the pedal, FC APOEL grabbed a couple of second-half goals for themselves ( top scorer Gustavo Manduca and substitute Esteban Solari both found the net) as the game finished 5-2, with an aggregate 8-2 scoreline.

With that, we wave a fond farewell to the Cypriot side who have, for so long, surprised themselves and everyone else by reaching the last eight. Their cheap options, filling out UCL Fantasy squads, will be sorely missed in the next stage.

With Madrid securing the fourth and final spot in the Semi-Finals, European Fantasy managers are set for a tricky time ahead as they attempt to build squads for these final rounds. Unlike the last couple of years, where Schalke (2010/11) and Lyon (2009/10) made the final four and offered mid-low price candidates to round out squads, there will be far less opportunities to do so, meaning managers will have tough decisions ahead as they attempt to balance the books.

Repost - I have two different transfer plans and I want you to help me decide which is better.

    The start of both plans is the same;

    Gw32 Odem in for Ba
Gw33 Walcott in for Dempsey, Sess in for Miyaichi – 4 point hit
    Gw34 11 playing

Then it goes different, which do you think is better A or B

    A) Gw35 Ade in for Odem, Walcott to Miyaichi – 1 DGW’er
    Gw36 Kompany to Baines, Verm to ACole – 4 point hit – 7 DGW’ers

    B) Gw35 Dempsey in for Walcott, Adebayor in for Odem, Wheater in for  Verm – 1 DGW’er – 4 point hit
    Gw36 ACole in for Kompany – 7 DGW’ers

Finding it all a bit hard to read & follow but if we break it down are we saying:

      a) Baines, A cole & Miyaichi
      vs
      b) Wheater, Dempsey & Kompany

If that's the case, I'll pick a) but with Petrov instead of Miyaichi.

      Gw34 11 playing

      Gw35 Ade in for Odem
Gw36 Kompany to Baines, Verm to ACole

No hits and if I am right that you still get 11 players then I dont see whats wrong with it.

Planning ahead - captain shout for GW33? I'm thinking Newcastle forward (home to Bolton) instead of either RVP or Rooney? Wise?

Yeah it would be difficult to ignore RVP @ Wolves. Regarding Ba, I'm just gonna keep him this week and then do Dempsey and Ba > Sess and Ade. His SoG and other stats are very similar to Cisse's, I think he's just been a bit unlucky lately. Especially with that assist (grrrr).

Please help me with bench, oh wise ones

    Vorm

    Skrtel Evans Simpson

    Walcott Bale Valencia Sigurdsson

    RVP Rooney Cisse

( Mignolet McClean BAE Kelly )

I don't like McClean on the bench, have a feeling he will get points this week. Compare his home points with Bale's away points for the last couple of months. However, who would I bench to get him in? Bale? Cisse? Walcott? Siggy?

On defense, Evans and Skrtel are definite but not sure about Simpson.

Any opinions would be appreciated, thanks

    Internazionale Press Conference

    Reporter:
You were the pretournament favorite in your group, yet you failed to even get out of the group phase.
    JMS:
Thank you for reminding me. We are committed to doing our best in the UEFA Cup.
    Reporter:
Umm, it’s now called the Europa Cup.
    JMS:
Really? You know, we are one of only two teams to have won that competition three times, three if you count Liverpool, but I don’t.
    Reporter:
Do you have any changes in mind for the weekend?
    JMS:
I think that there may be a change or two. Players who were on the bench last weekend are eager to get a chance to play. Other than that, I do not see any major changes to the squad. There are a couple players who are in the Last Chance Salon.
    Reporter:
You mean Last Chance Saloon don’t you?
    JMS:
This is an Italian team. We go to the Salon, not the Saloon. By the way, isn’t Mancini’s hair marvelous? He may be out of the international competitions, but he at least has that hair.
    Reporter:
Do you have any comments on your opponent?
    JMS:
I hear that Birmingham, Alabama is a lovely place to visit.
    Reporter:
Umm, you are playing Birmingham City F.C. They are in Birmingham, England.
JMS: Oh. Well that explains why they play at St. Andrews. I love to golf.
    Reporter:
    You realize that…. Oh, nevermind.

So everyone seems to have similar problems this week on who to bench (luckily I don't have this problem as I'm benching Moses) so how do you think the players below will score?

    The scores I predict are

    Sigurdsson - 6

    Dempsey - 11 (I don't care if he's away, it's Bolton)

They don't and won't keep CSs, so Wheater/Ream/Bogdan are a waste of places/transfers. Clean sheets > defender goals/pen saves as they're a more reliable and predictable source of points.

Only Klasnic if on pens and nailed on would even slightly tempt me attacking wise.

I reckon the best plan is: get a full squad for no hits(many as possible) for GW34, then if your new players average below 4 - at least thats x points you wouldn't have had for the inevitable pile of transfer fees for GW36. If they collectively average more than 4, then you're laughing.

As long as you're not shipping out too many/any GW36DGWs in the first place

Anyone think Ba/Cisse/Ben Arfa might get dropped, I don't know if pardew can go with the Ba, Cisse, Ben Arfa trio away at Swansea as I think they may need to swamp the midfield a bit more and be more defensive.

Did you see the game against west brom away? It was very much a 4-5-1, when they had the ball, breaking quickly so it became a 4-3-3 when we were attacking. We'll be fine. Dave and barfa will definitely play

I think you are thinking about the spurs away game, when we went a straight 4-4-2. And Pardew said that was a mistake. The formation is very different now. If I remember rightly, we had tiote and cabeye both missing for that game two.

Worth a thought. Cisse was dropped at Arsenal (FPL trap set by the Gods), whilst HBA could easily make way for a more defensive minded approach. Doesn't matter what you've done in your last game, it's all about the next one and any one can get dropped.

Berb and Dzeko both dropped after 9 goals in 2 games between them!

FURTHER ANALYSIS OF THE “BLANK PLAGUE” OF GW34 and DOUBLES OF GW36

Really enjoyed Sir Paulos’ in-depth examination of the GW34 and GW36 conundrum. It’s a ridiculously complicated problem and I may be wrong but it seems strange to me that no one has posted up the simple idea of just combining the fixtures of GW34 and GW36 thereby leveling out the playing field and looking at the fixtures as if there were no double gameweeks:
    Arsenal --------- WIG sto
    Aston Villa ---- mun wba
    Blackburn ------ swa tot
    Bolton ---------- sun TOT
    Chelsea -------- QPR NEW
    Everton -------- FUL sto
    Fulham -------- eve liv
    Liverpool ------ nor FUL
    Man City ------ nor MUN
    Man Utd ------- AVL mci
    Newcastle ---- wig che
    Norwich ------- MCI LIV
    QPR ------------ wba che
    Stoke ---------- ARS EVE
    Sunderland --- WOL BOL
    Swansea ------- BLA WOL
    Tottenham ---- BLA bol
    West Brom ---- QPR AVL
    Wigan ---------- ars NEW
    Wolves --------- sun swa

When you try and filter your ticker on FFS to only show GW34 and GW36 and then sort by it by ‘Overall’ difficulty it seems to have some kind of DGW malfunction, that or I just plainly disagree with the outcome. Anyway here is how I rank it from easiest to hardest (using the ticker difficulties) promoting the idea that having Swansea, Sunderland, West Brom and Arsenal players for GW34 and GW36 could be more beneficial than just getting your GW36 players in ASAP:
    Swansea ------- BLA WOL
    Sunderland --- WOL BOL
    Tottenham ---- BLA bol
    West Brom ---- QPR AVL
    Chelsea -------- QPR NEW
    Arsenal --------- WIG sto
    Liverpool ------ nor FUL
    Everton -------- FUL sto
    Man Utd ------- AVL mci
    Newcastle ---- wig che
    Stoke ---------- ARS EVE
    Wigan ---------- ars NEW
    Wolves --------- sun swa
    Fulham -------- eve liv
    QPR ------------ wba che
    Blackburn ------ swa tot
    Aston Villa ---- mun wba
    Bolton ---------- sun TOT
    Norwich ------- MCI LIV

Now before any torrent of abuse starts I know this is an overly simplistic view because once you weigh in all of the other factors (team form, player form, injuries, suspensions, rotation, the fact that you have a 15 man squad and not just 11, free transfers etc etc etc) it loses a lot of its significance. I have already discussed in a previous post the basic strategy for us managers to rotate our squad of 15 and use free transfers to maximise the number of games your players can play in both gameweeks so I am reluctant to get into that again. This is just purely looking at the fixtures and in that sense there is one overwhelming factor which must be included for this to be any use at all… GW35! Sorry to be a pain but you’re going to have to field a team that week too folks. So, when we include the GW35 fixtures (again I have to differ with what the ticker throws up) I rank them like so:
    Swansea ------- BLA bol WOL
    Sunderland --- WOL avl BOL
    Tottenham ---- qpr BLA bol
Aston Villa ---- mun SUN BOL wba
Bolton ---------- SWA avl sun TOT
West Brom ---- QPR liv AVL
    Liverpool ------ WBA nor FUL
    Arsenal --------- WIG CHE sto
    Newcastle ---- STO wig che
Man Utd ------- AVL EVE mci
    Chelsea -------- ars QPR NEW
Man City ------ nor wol MUN
    Blackburn ------ swa NOR tot
    Fulham -------- WIG eve liv
    Everton -------- mun FUL sto
    Stoke ---------- new ARS EVE
    Norwich ------- MCI bla LIV
    Wigan ---------- ars ful NEW
    QPR ------------ wba TOT che
    Wolves --------- sun MCI swa

A few things can be gathered from all of this. The first is, don’t just trust the ticker, use it as a guide and make your own calculations. Obviously Villa and Bolton’s 4 fixtures promotes them to lofty positions here but I actually agree with this as not enough people are respecting this and contemplating bringing in Villa and Bolton players in GW35 which I see as a sneaky and viable strategy. Liverpool go up in my estimations while Everton and Stoke are two teams which fall considerably but this can be counter-balanced by their last two fixtures of the season which are favourable. I urge people to get a full compliment of Spurs players for this precise reason as they have great fixtures up to, during and crucially after the DGW.

I’m pretty sure the more savvy users of FFS will have narrowed their ticker down and looked at it from this perspective, as well as others, themselves but for those that haven’t had this particular brainwave, perhaps this post is a useful slant on how you will deal with this unique twist in the fixture list. It could go on, you could add in the last 2 fixtures of the season (why not?) but that’s for another time. The reason I added GW35 into the equation and not 37 & 38 is because GW35 cannot be ignored, any plans you make for GW36 must include GW35, the same is not true of 37 and 38. Anyway there is no perfect balance right now, when the gameweeks are over some will say there was ‘one’ and the lucky few will have nailed it, but right now it is not apparent. Enjoy my wild stab in the dark though 😛

Yeah I knew people were going to disagree with this and it may be misinterpretation or I may just be talking bull...

From a theoretical standpoint, I think it does make sense so let me try and explain my logic; the planning process and transfer strategy for GW36 begins now so anything you do now must include plans for GW35, that is up until after GW35. Hypothetically speaking you can change your team for GWs 37 and 38 after GW36 so your strategy PREFERABLY includes plans for these gameweeks, whereas GW35 comes before GW36 so any strategy therein MUST include plans for GW35.

Great post!! I posted my views on the GW34 and GW36 decisions earlier, would be interested in your thoughts:-

Player A has eight players for Gameweek 34 – this means you have seven for double Gameweek 36. With three free transfers, you can have ten double Gameweek 36 players.
Player B has 11 players for Gameweek 34 – this means you have four for double Gameweek 36. With three free transfers, you can have seven double Gameweek 36 players.

Assume we have the same basic players (as most do) so the 8 players in GW34 will include:
      2 forwards: RVP, Rooney….GAP
3 mids: Walcott, Valencia, Siggy….GAP, GAP
2 defenders: Evans, Verm….GAP, GAP, GAP
      1 keeper: Vorm…GAP

Player B gets to play 3 more players in GW34, based on the gaps left and the players you will want to keep (the likes of Suarez, Cisse, Adebayor, Bale, Dempsey, HBA, BAE, Enrique, Baines etc) it is likely you will have space for an extra midfielder like Sessegon or McClean and 2 extra defenders like Caulker and McAuley.

Looking at their games: McAuley (QPR), Caulker (BLA) and Sessegon or McClean (WOL) you would are likely to score a minimum of 6 with a good chance to get at least 1 CS and an assist/goal from Sessegon or McClean which would give you around 14 and if your really lucky (2 CS and a goal/assist+bonus) around 20+ points is possible.

Now, the good bit is that player A has to sit on his DGW players until GW36 praying for no drop in form, injury, bans etc affecting his extra players. Player B on the other hand can wait till GW36 before making his transfers, getting the form players that are most likely to play. The point to consider is that Player B can use the points he earned in GW34 as an investment to be spent partially or completely on hits, the 3 extra transfers would cost 12 points which depending on the GW34 results could still leave the player in profit and with the same amount of DGW players as player A.

This is assuming you want 11 DGW players! If you take Caulker and compare him to someone like Simpson for games in GW34 and GW36 you get:-
      Caulker = GW34 (BLA) GW36 (WOL) = 2 home games
      Simpson = GW34 (blank) GW36 (wig/che) = 2 away games

Of course it might end horribly but at the moment I think there is a good case for 11 GW34 players!

I think this is an excellent opinion. Good post Lurking. The only dodgy bit for me is saying "player A, B and C are likely to score a minimum of X points".

That said, I agree with the vast majority of your thoughts. Bringing players in to field a full XI in GW34 is a distinct advantage IMO simply because it comes sooner and therefore you do not have to sit on your DGW assets for GW36. I also like the idea of perhaps spending points gained in GW34 in order to match player As DGW contingent.

I am definitely of the player B variety...

Appreciate the feedback both. Think I will play 11 in GW34, all with 'easy' home fixtures too. If the tactic works might use my profits to get a Bolton MF in GW35 for McClean.

Questions like this don't often recieve replys unless you find someone who is very bored. Why don't you offer some options to us and then we'll give you our views on them?

hi everyone, i'm a big user of hits (check my link and you'll see what i mean) however since xmas i've been doing really well and avoiding the big ones, so my question is this, the best i can do at the moment for gw34 is 7 players without taking hits which would leave me able to get in 8 dgw players, should that be the way to go? or is the odd hit in order for such a large dgw?

also team for this week looks like this:
    vorm
    verm, jevans, baines
    bale, demps, yaya, valencia(v/c) siggy
    RVP, rooney(c)

    krul, turner, kelly, lita

    sorry for the longish post

    thanks
