It is hard to believe Thomas Vermaelen is a defender by trade, such is the frequency in which he appears in opposition penalty boxes. With his surging runs up the field and set piece threat, the Arsenal defender exhibits a level of attacking skill that leaves many designated forwards in the shade. With this in mind, it’s no surprise to see him topping the defender goal scoring charts, having notched five times already this term.

Finding the net hasn’t always been a facet of the Belgian international’s career, however. A product of the Ajax’s famed youth academy, he has notched 24 career goals since making his first team debut for the Dutch club in 2004, though half of these have come since joining Arsenal in 2009. It is no wonder he is referred to as the Gunners’ second best striker after Robin Van Persie, although on paper this season, he is the fourth most clinical in terms of goals scored.

Despite missing nine games this term through injury and suspension, Vermaelen has still managed to accrue 115 points and is the sixth best defender in terms of total points in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game. Goals have undoubtedly helped him achieve this, with four double-figure returns and 13 bonus points to his name already. Among his most recent hauls was a goal and maximum bonus points in Arsenal’s Gameweek 29 victory over Everton at Goodison Park.

In recent weeks a resurgent Arsenal have tightened up markedly at the back, racking up four clean sheets in the last five Gameweeks. Vermaelen’s influence in the Gunners’ backline is obvious; in the 23 games he has started, they have returned 10 clean sheets but without Vermaelen in the first XI, Arsenal have chalked up just two clean sheets in 10 matches; a drop from 43% to 20%.

Crucially for those Fantasy managers scrabbling around to get a team together for the problematic Gameweek 34, Vermaelen is set to host Wigan this Monday. The recent improvement in form for the relegation-threatened Lancashire side will not worry Vermaelen, though; Arsenal’s Gameweek 14 clash away to Wigan was the scene of a 16 point haul for the centre-half, his biggest of the season so far.

The 7.0 priced defender then faces ( CHE, sto, NOR, wba) over the last four fixtures of the season and, with considerable potential to accrue points at both ends of the pitch, Vermaelen seems well-placed to pick up the points as Arsenal look to secure an automatic Champions League spot in the race for third with north London rivals Spurs.

    Vorm
Vermalen - Evans - Mcauley -Turner
    Valencia - Silva - Routledge
    RvP

    Adebayor - VDV - BAE - Tremmel - Crouch - Mata

Set up for DGW with 7 players when using my 2 FTs (may strecth to 8 tho)

Captaincy dilemma. My rival, who is 20 points behind, will most certainly captain Rooney since he doesn't have RVP. Do I:

Finger still lingering over the Cisse ➡ Aguero 4 pts hit button!

    Pros:
    - can field 11 for gw34
    - Aguero on form

    Cons:
    - Effectively lose a DGW fixture (Cisse’s wig+che becomes Aguero’s MUN)
    - the obvious 4 points gone

I assume others are in same, or similar, situations.

    What are your thoughts?

might be worth taking a differential captain choice of Walcott over RVP

so using 1 FT to get a 34 player results in a loss of 90 mins but do you think that aguero vs nor and wol and verm vs stk.. can outscore ade vs qpr and baines vs FUL and stk

Can anyone allay my fears about the possibility of FA Cup replays ... are the semi-finals played to a conclusion on match day? Unless thay are, replays could play havoc with fixtures.

    Vorm (Krul)
    Verm, Evans (Santon, Enrique, BAE)
    Walcott, Dyer, Siggy, Valencia, Sess
    Rooney, RVP, (Suarez)

got 1 FT. Only 10 players, £1.8m in bank

surely not worth using my TF for a defender is it?

    Bamboozled/twisted melon - help needed:

    Foster
    Vermaelen Evans Caulker
    Walcott Valencia Siggy
    Rooney RVP(c)

Bogdan, Dempsey, Ryo, Suarez, Cahill, Kelly

    2FTs

Plan A: 1 week punt on Bendtner - Suarez > Bendtner (Field 10)
Plan B: Dempsey > Nasri + Cahill > Lichaj (Field XI) - Get stressed about Dempsey later
Plan C: Save the 2FTs for next week

    Help!?

I think he's definitely a good option for next week. This week...I suppose there's a possibility he could end up getting 0 or less, but so long as he's not sent off you're ok.

Maloney for the penalties. Moses for his attacking runs and skills, just not finishing them off as well as he should.

Both are punts, Maloney is a good one, IMO.

am considering myself for last 2 GWs (bla, WOL)

Moses seems the logical choice but Maloney on pens and 0.6 cheaper seems a great punt. He has also been a major cause of Wigan's recent run.

That being said if Wigan do something, chances are Moses will be involved.

Thoughts on my current DGW team

requires an 8 point hit, buts sets me up nicely for GW37 as well

      Freidel (BLA, bol)

Huth (ARS, EVE) Baines, (FUL, sto) Santon (wig, che)

Sess (BOL), Siggy (WOL), Bale (BLA, bol) Dempsey (eve, liv)

RvP (sto), Cisse (wig, che) Ade (BLA, bol)

Mingolet (BOL), McClean (BOL), Caulker (WOL) Verm (sto)

Means I can dump Sess and Siggy for Theo and Moses in GW37

Think I've settled on saving my transfer, how's this looking?

    Vorm
    Kompany - Caulker - Evans
    Valencia - Walcott - Sig - McClean
    RVP - Rooney - Zamora
    (Krul, Santon, Skrtel, Dempsey)

I've rarely been playing Zamora and sort of tempted to do Santon > Turner so I can bench him, reckon it'd be worth it? Not so fussed about Santon's double.
