The UEFA Champions League (UCL) Semi-Finals kick-off in Germany later this evening. We’re getting straight down to business, then, and, at this stage, buying the same players as your Fantasy rivals will see you lose no ground but also gain very little. So, in the penultimate rounds, we’re aping Big Dunc and skewing a little left of centre…

European Fantasy managers will have a lot of overlap between their squads as pickings getting slimmer and slimmer. Rather than offer up the same Watchlist we’d expect to see – pick Lionel Messi folks, it goes without saying – at this venture it’s left to the differentials to make or break a UCL season.

All four remaining sides come from the more expensive end of the spectrum, meaning Fantasy managers have a tough time trying to balance their budgets in an attempt to field as many men as possible and push up the rankings….

Bayern Munich

At the weekend, the German outfit decided to bench the likes of Mario Gomez, Franck Ribery and Philipp Lahm for their game at home to Mainz in preparation for their Matchday Eleven fixture with Real Madrid. After only drawing said tie, Bayern’s plan pretty much blew up in their faces as they handed the Bundesliga title on a platter to Borussia Dortmund. The Champions League now remains all they have left to play for and, with the final taking place in their own stadium, Jupp Heynckes’ side will be going hell for leather to squeeze past Jose Mourinho’s men…

David Alaba – This man is not going have many column inches written about him after these UCL Semi-Finals but, for European Fantasy managers, he could come in handy. At just 4.3, Alaba is the cheapest player left in the game and should get some points over the next two Matchdays, at least.

Bastian Schweinsteiger – Having played a full 90 minutes in the fixture against Mainz, the Bayern vice-captain will certainly carry a great deal of risk of on his shoulders. Should he play, however, the German international will be well-placed to pick up some spoils. This kind of purchase will be for European Fantasy managers making final transfers once the team-sheets for the first-leg are in.

Thomas Mueller – After walking off injured just 39 minutes into the last UCL fixture against Marseille, many European Fantasy managers -my colleague Granville included, we imagine- will be carrying bad blood for the German striker. However, with a mere 7% ownership (compared to 25% for lead striker Mario Gomez), if you need an alternative, then the 2010 World Cup Golden Boot winner looks decent value with a price tag of 7.8.

Real Madrid

The incentive is obvious for Jose Mourinho’s men. Currently four points clear of Barcelona in the race for La Liga, Real could, potentially, be afforded the opportunity to snatch the European crown from their rivals’ head. The Special One will be plotting and scheming, then, in his attempts to clinch a double over Pep Guardiola’s side. First, though, he must engineer a route past Bayern…

Angel Di Maria – The Argentine winger has just recently returned from an injury picked up in December. For that reason, Di Maria is able to sneak under more than a few radars and provide a real differential option very few are currently considering.

Fabio Coentrao/Marcelo – Owned by just 3% and 4% of UCL managers respectively, one of these two men should occupy the left-back position for Madrid. In Matchday Eleven, European Fantasy managers should have the team sheets ahead of the deadline to help clarify which of the pair has been picked by Mourinho.

Kaka – After our previous success of backing the Brazilian, we can’t help but stick our neck out once again. Tonight’s aforementioned team sheets will be vital in guaranteeing getting bang from your buck, however, with a place in the first XI far from guaranteed. If he does get the nod, though, Kaka – the second top scoring midfielder to date – will surely be a substantial threat.

Chelsea

Given that they are facing the reigning European Champions and tournament favourites, many have already written off Chelsea’s chances. With that in mind, Roberto Di Matteo’s side offer perhaps the greatest chance of differentials a European Fantasy manager would be looking for at this stage- whether they can prevail, though, is another matter entirely…

Branislav Ivanovic – With a domestic suspension currently being served, the Chelsea right-back looks the safest of the whole squad to be picked to play both legs. In addition, his recent return to goalscoring form and aerial prowess from set-pieces could prove problematic against Barca’s diminutive lot.

Daniel Sturridge – The young English forward doesn’t seem to be as much in favour with his interim manager as the previous man in charge. Coming in at a low, low price of just 5.2 (bargain figures when you consider most players around at this stage) Sturridge could prove to be the ultimate differential and balance-clearer. If he plays that is.

Fernando Torres – The Spanish forward is almost certainly in his best form since joining the Blues. Where exactly Roberto Di Matteo’s preferences lie at this stage is still a mystery but, with Didier Drogba having started at Wembley at the weekend, Torres stands a good chance of leading the attack in Matchday Eleven as Chelsea seek to gain a home advantage before a daunting return at the Nou Camp.

Barcelona

Pep Guardiola’s side have by far the greatest weight of expectation to reach Matchday Thirteen and the Champions League final. While the other semi-final is a little less straightforward, Barca are overwhelming favourites to eliminate Chelsea. It’s an assessment we agree with and, for this reason, one would have to suggest that picking their players for now and then will be a wise strategic choice. Everyone in their right mind will have Lionel Messi in their side, but there are plenty of players remaining who could spark a surge up the places…

Victor Valdes – The Spanish goalkeeper is by far the least selected of the four goalkeepers left in the competition and is odds-on to reach the next stage. It’s an easy choice if you need to make it.

Andres Iniesta – With only a 35 minute substitute appearance at the weekend, the Spanish midfielder should be called upon to leave his mark on Stamford Bridge once more. Owned by just 6% of those playing the UCL format, he’ll pose plenty of threat to rivals.

Pedro/Alexis Sanchez – Coming in at 9.1 and 9.3 in UCL currency respectively, the two Barcelona forwards offer a great deal going forward, with very few European Fantasy managers backing them with a spot in the team. If you want to bulk up your Barcelona offense, then either of these men could be a viable solution.

    Just a quick post on possible Chelsea rotation.

    Barcelona V Chelsea. (CL). Tue 24 Apr. 19:45
    . ---> 4 days rest in between
    Chelsea V QPR (PL). Sun 29 Apr. 13:30
    . ---> 2 days rest in between
    Chelsea V Newcastle ". Wed 2 May. 19:45
    . ---> 2 days rest in between
    Chelsea V Liverpool. (FA). Sat 5 May. 17:15

    I think from all this, we can take away that Chelsea have enough recovery time after Barca to field a full strength team against QPR. HOWEVER, they are likely to want to play full strength teams against both Newcastle and Liverpool (FA Cup) and I therefore believe that players will be rested against QPR. Given how much RDM has rotated so far, I can't see the likes of Mata/Lampard/Cahill starting all 4 of those games, and imo QPR will be the one they miss, turning an enticing DGW into a single, tricky game against Newcastle. I'd be interested to hear if you lot agree!

    Hi guys! I have mostly cared about winning my ML, and I'm now leading it with 100 points.
    And now I'm gonna ship out Rooney and RVP to have some fun and try to climb even higher up the OVERALL rankings. Currently at 15,313rd place. Will do brave decisions and laugh all the way to the bank or possibly cry like a wolf and sit in a corner.

    Therefore, this is my plan for GW 35 and 36:

    My plans for GW 35 and 36!
    2FT and 0.5M atm in the bank

    GW 35:Rooney and RVP>Tevez(C),Adebayor

    GW 36:Tony V,Verm,Sess>,Mata,Baines,Bale. All those for an 8 pt hit.

    I’ve 2 FT’s and 2.4 in the bank.

Contemplating getting rid of Roonpig as he's never really excelled against Everton and I can see SAF wanting to rest him (with his last few performances being poor despite notching goals) with the derby against City in the next gameweek. The Pig was subbed off against Wigan because he was ineffectual. He was about to be subbed off against Villa when he scored because he was largely ineffectual. He tends not to do well against Everton (psychological, I think - it's his childhood team). For those reasons I ditched him for Tevez, whom I've wanted since I knew he was coming back but, like you, didn't have the stones to do until now.

      If Man Utd fail to beat Everton then Man City's fate lies in their own hands, just win all their games. So there'll be no resting players with the Manchester derby in mind.
      I don't take much heed of past history. Wigan hadn't won at Liverpool or Arsenal or taken a point of Man Utd up until a few weeks ago either.

        Also, Rooney's home form is 13-13-6-9-13. That can't be ignored.
        Prior to Saturday Tevez had scored only 1 away goal in 2011 and 2012. Yes he missed most of a season but that still includes a lot of blank away games.

      I think I mite switch Rooney to Tevez but... Looking at stats Rooney hasn't failed to deliver points at home since Dec 26th where he only played 27 minutes. He wash utter manure this week playing at home but still managed two goals and three bonus. I can't see Fergie resting him, all he has is the league. I capped Rooney over RVP this week because of stats and it paid off for once -- Rooney's home record v the fact that RVP had only scored in a return fixture once this season apparently.

      I still want Tevez though!

    Hi Guys

    In your honest opinion which is the best transfer to make for this week

    Walcott > Dempsey

    Or

    Song > Ben Arfa

    I can only do 1

    I had a go at the 20 Seasons fantasy team... fittingly I would have selected all of the players in FPL (except maybe Scholes) when they were at their peak.

      A lot of the team picks itself.
      The striker slots are hardest to pick and who to go with Scholes in the middle of midfield.
      Went Shearer, Henry and Gerrard personally.

        Yep exactly. There's all kinds of criteria you could use to pick a greatest team of course... and I was stuck between Gerrard/Lampard. Went for Lampard in the end for his somewhat better assists and goal stats, though Gerrard can turn a whole game round by himself.

        Shearer played longer and scored more goals than Van Nistelrooy so for achievement he could be in there; I went for the Van because of his phenomenal strike rate (95 goals in 150 games or something).

    Really tough to field a squad with the price of these players for tonights UCL. Playing around with possible line-ups and have this so far. How do you guys think it looks?

    GK: Neuer - Turnbull (won't play him)

    DEF: Badstuber - Ivanovic - Adriano - Arbeloa - Varane (have up to 4.9 for other defender instead?)

    MID: Robben - Kaka - Fabregas - Alba - Callejon

    FWD: Messi - Benzema - Sturridge

    No Ronaldo but hoping Benzema + Kaka can help ease that loss. Anything stand out?

      It's looking impossible to get a good 15, you're done very well there. Adriano, Callejon, Varane and even Kaka are starting doubts of course.

      I tried to get a good 15 and am now intending to play with 12.

        Varane or any other random 5th defender I probably won't play at all. Callejon and Kaka surely to get time but I will wait to see team sheets tonight to see who starts. Kaka/Di Maria are possibilities there and Callejon is a must for the price. Adriano also a doubt but cheapest way into Barca defence and could get a game.

          Yeah I'm probably going to punt on Callejon, Adriano and maybe Kaka. I think I'll use the money saved by writing off a few spots to improve the forwards and midfield

    Afternoon all.

    I'm starting to round in circles about GW36.

    So, I've decided to start my thinking over again.

    Who does everyone think is "essential" for the DGW? If there is such a thing.

    The closest I have is Cisse and Dempsey.

    Any others?

    My weakish team is
    Bogdan
    Evans-Kolarov-Taylor (Cahill) (McAuley)
    Gerrard-Valencia-Siggi-Walcott-Pilkington
    Rooney-RvP-Hoilett

    It's a big call but, with 36 in mind, which is better?

    I'm probably going to ship out Hoilett for a Bolton or Villa option and after that:

    1. RVP-Tevez
    2. RVP-Adebayor
    3. Hold on to RVP this week and then bring in Adebayor and Drogba next week

    i'm afraid of a big city score this week, but want to stock up for DGW too.

    "The Messi and Ronaldo debate is just daft. They stopped being compared about 2 years ago by anyone with a respected opinion as it's now understood Messi is out on his own as the best player on the planet. The discussion these days is where Messi sits all time. I can't remember hearing many similar discussions about Ronaldo. This is to take nothing away from Ronaldo as he is a truly fantastic player, but he is just not as good as Messi and is far less effective against stronger opposition whilst Messi shines against better opposition."

    would people pretty much agree with this completely

      Ronaldo is still one of the greatest players of all time though - he'll just enever be considered to be THE greatest player because he's overshadowed by Messi. If this generation didn't have Messi then Ronaldo would be compared with Pele and Maradonna.

    Okay please help.

    Route 1: GW 35 Walcott->Dempsey
    GW 36: Rooney/Valencia -> Adebayor/VDV or some other midfielder with DGW? For 1 hit

    or

    Route 2: GW 35: Rooney/Theo -> Demspey/Tevez
    GW 36 Valencia -> DGW midfielder?

    Team would look like this :

    Vorm

    SHAWCROSS SANTON Turner

    BALE DEMPSEY Sessegnon Siggy ?

    CISSE Rvp ?

    Turner/Sess have Bolton at home and Vorm/Siggy have Wolves at home, so theyre both staying, and i cant really see myself selling RVP even in light of his recent drought.

    Comments, please.

    Team
    Mignolet, Vorm
    Evans, Sagna, Simpson (Richards, Turner)
    Valencia, Walcott, Bale, Dempsey Siggy
    Rooney Van Persie (Bendy)

    Time to be bold, so transfers done - Bendy and Valencia for Ben Afra and Cisse (no hit) . Both can go straight into the team with 5 double players in my team with another 2 in next week for a 4 point hit (mata for Walcott, defiantly being one, and Assou-E for Richards) Sound good? Thoughts?

    C) Valencia --> Dempsey, RVP --> Tevez. (-4)
