[sbu_large_image] Scouting The Doubles

Newcastle approach the upcoming double Gameweek as the outstanding form side in the Premier League. With six back-to-back victories, Alan Pardew’s men have defied the doubters and are firmly in the running for the Champions League places with just four games of the domestic campaign remaining. The Magpies still have everything still to play for, then, and it’s little wonder they have been the subject of plenty Fantasy investment ahead of their pair of fixtures:

The Prospects

Up first for Pardew’s troops is a trip to Wigan on Saturday afternoon. Given their own impressive form, Roberto Martinez’s side are likely to pose the Magpies problems – recent wins over United, Liverpool and Arsenal attest to that. The Latics have picked up clean sheets in each of their last two at the DW but with Papiss Cisse, Hatem Ben Arfa and Yohan Cabaye all in outstanding recent form, confidence in the visitors will be sky high here, with Fantasy managers keen to get a piece of the action. Martinez’s men have also scored in each of their last eight fixtures, suggesting Newcastle’s run of five clean sheets in the last six will be firmly put to the test.

Pardew then takes his side to the Bridge for a crucial clash with Chelsea the following Wednesday. With an FA Cup Final against Liverpool just three days after this encounter, in addition to having a Champions League Final to consider, Roberto Di Matteo will have a selection dilemma on his hands as he looks to clinch some silverware and boost his own chances of landing the manager’s job on a full-time basis. Last week’s lineup at Arsenal already shows Di Matteo isn’t scared of resting and rotating – Newcastle will hold little fear going into this one. The Blues have been strong defensively at the Bridge since Andre Villas-Boas’ departure, though, returning two clean sheets in three but, with just three goals scored in those encounters with Stoke, Spurs and Wigan, hopes of an away clean sheet look justified.

The Likely Lads

With nine goals in his last six, including a brace in each of his last two away games, Papiss Cisse has already been the subject of plenty Fantasy interest this Gameweek. Over 33,000 managers have drafted in the league’s in-form forward, as the January signing continues to rack up the goals at an incredible speed. Cisse has averaged an outstanding 8.6 points per game since arriving on Tyneside from SC Freiburg, far superior to Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie, who have both managed 6.9 in comparison. Having played a part in 11 of his side’s last 13 goals, the Senegal strike sensation looks the most likely to do the damage ahead of the Magpies’ road trips.

The wing wizardry of Hatem Ben Arfa has played a pivotal role in Newcastle’s recent resurgence. Since establishing himself as a regular starter back in Gameweek 28, the Frenchman has excelled on the right of Pardew’s new 4-3-3 formation. Ben Arfa has produced three goals, four assists and six bonus points over those previous seven fixtures, averaging 7.4 points per game. Priced at just 6.1 and with an 8% ownership, his budget-friendly potential is obvious.

Yohan Cabaye is another player who has benefitted from a recent change of system. Cabaye excelled for French champions Lille last season in a 4-3-3 and was one of their most instrumental players as Rudi Garcia’s side snapped up the Ligue 1 title. Over the last three games, the 5.9 priced midfielder has come to the fore, with two goals, four assists and five bonus points – with Cheick Tiote back to anchor the central midfield three, Cabaye is likely to get plenty more chances to continue his recent rise in attacking returns as Pardew’s men go in search for that Champions League place.

At the back, those afore-mentioned five clean sheets in the last six will have Fantasy managers eyeing up the Magpies defensive assets. It’s worth noting, however, that four of those have come at home – Pardew’s side have just two clean sheets in their last six on the road. Nevertheless, the potential is there for points, with cut-price favourites such as Danny Simpson a stand-out. The 4.7 priced right-back has produced two assists and seven bonus points this season and has, so far, offered more attacking potential than any of the current back-four. Mike Williamson looks a more secure starter than Davide Santon – both are priced at a mere 4.2, while Tim Krul’s save points balance out his slightly higher cost of 5.0.

Cheeky Punt

Just a few months ago, the idea of Demba Ba finding himself in this category would have been absurd. The arrival of compatriot Cisse and the subsequent shift in formation, however, have been hugely detrimental to his worth as a Fantasy asset. Stationed on the left on a front three, Ba has cut a frustrated figure, returning a single assist in the last ten Gameweeks as his Fantasy price plummets from 8.1 down to 7.0. With spot-kick duties still in his locker, however, he may just come good over the next two fixtures.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

They actually don't haha, it was a freak error in which about 9 minutes into the game last night, FPL updated and added one more save to the previous game. Following this the saves in last night's game were just added to the AVL game.

So no, I don't but boy was it mightily confusing.

Do you think David Villa’s leg break and Pedro’s vanishing form of previous seasons has damaged Barca this season? Those 2 with Messi were formidable as a front 3 and seemed to compliment each other so well.

It has meant the likes of Tello, Cuenca and Thiago have been playing in the wide positions alot with limited success. None of them seem very threatening and alot of the time the just cut back and look to give it to Messi for him to figure out a way through. You even saw Dani Alves looking way out his depth with no confidence on the ball whatsoever. They rely so heavily on Messi that alot of their players are limited in what they can do in terms of digging their team out a hole because they’re so used to Messi doing it for them

Villa would have been crucial for them, especially in CL, as he was in previous seasons. Talent can only help you to a certain extent, in these kind of circumstances experience is the main key.

3 teams going for 3rd spot since Chelski will win CL imo.......... Newcastle - will have something to prove given the unfair game at St James - sorry Sports Direct Arena - Luiz should have been sent off early on and the Magpies were pretty unlucky. So form is crucial - NUtd = keep Cisse

Any genuine footballing fan would agree that Barcelona not going through was a travesty. I would not want Barca to win but think from a footballing perspective a team which played as embaressing as Chelsea did should not go through.

The amount of luck Chelsea endured over two legs was something I have never seen before in my life. The negative football they played was a discredit to the premier league.

For a team such as Real/Bayern to face Chelsea in the final will mean that they face team who wont have 65%+ possession meaning they cant sit back the whole game in some table football style formation where no spaces appear. I will be interested to see how they plan to take on a team who adopts a different approach. I personally think Real will go through and win the cup.

Chelsea just played the right game to beat Barcelona. If your team's not setup for it you can't beat them at there own game. Chelsea did the same to Arsenal (Arsenal just defend better) I'm an Arsenal fan, so I know exactly what you mean, you can't blame them for doing it really. You have to respect them for battling it out and getting a draw in the end!

Was the alamo a travesty? Was the Battle of Thermopylae a travesty? No they were just bloody hardcore...

Is Serie A a disgrace because Milan capitulated at the Nou Camp? Barcelona at home dominate games like that against everyone. Let's play open attacking football even though were no match for Barca and get smashed 4-0 just to please the neutrals? No chance. How about setting your stall out and getting to the CL final instead.

If Barca can't break them down enough to go through then tough titty. That's the way it goes sometimes. Chelsea's defence came out on top of Barcelona's attack and they deserve to go through.

Defending is a massive part of the game and that was great to watch last night. The great AC Milan sides were renowned for being such a good defensive unit. Football is not always about how great a goal was or how skillful a move was. Defending is an art and for 10 men to stick together and shut out one of the best teams in football is a credit to them.

Agreed - one of the best games I've seen was a 10-man Italy hold out vs. a rampant Holland in the 2000 Euros, Nesta & Cannavaro were astonishing that day.

Chelsea played to win and they did. that's kind of the end of this story.

there's no doubting that Barcelona are a great team and anyone who goes out their and tries to beat them at their own game is doomed to failure.

that's why Chelsea chose their strategy wisely. if anything, it was Barcelona who got their tactics wrong.

I don't agree that is was a travesty at all. Chelsea had 10 men for 60 minutes and were trying to protect a lead. It was fantastic defensive teamwork. There's more than one way to win a football game. If they (Chelsea) just went for it it would've left Barca with all kinds of space to exploit. Barca got knocked out because they don't have a 'Plan B'.

But I agree that Real will probably win it, because I think they're, currently, the best team in the world. They're lethal.

Totally agree with this but I do think people need to calm down about it. This is a team bankrolled by billions not a Sunday league outfit yes it was the Nou Camp and while it was a sterling job they did, it is still exactly that, a job and what they're paid to try to do

the whole defender argument this week is interesting:

swansea/sunderland (one nice home game) v newcastle/fulham (2 reasonably tough away games to keep cleanies)

im firmly in the one nice home game camp myself. looking at the fixtures im sure if people listed what they think the scores would be rather than being blinded by the 2 fixtures under their player they may think similar

swansea v wolves and sunderland v bolton look like home wins to nil to me whereas everton n liverpool will probably both score past fulham and newcastles only clean sheet hope is at wigan who seem to be scoring a fair few lately

    thoughts?

Personally I respect Barca's ethos but it doesn't mean I enjoy watching then make 1,000 one foot passes every game then pass to Messi to finish it off. I am now hoping the rest of Europe make positive strides to close that gap so that people can stop blowing smoke up Barca's poop hole.

At least now after what's happened over the last week we have proof that Barca are humans after all and they do have weaknesses.

But for now I am rooting for Madrid or Bayern, in that order. Sorry to any Blue's out there 😉

Well at least if that does in fact transpire I will tip my cap to you. Given all of their bad luck in various semi's and Finals I can't say they don't deserve a change of luck.

Plus if it means someone as sound as Di M takes up the Chelsea hot seat then I will be happy.

And one more thing... they should have more tatics to reach the goal especially when the opponent has the whole team inside the box 😉

Regarding the ridiculous comment that Chelsea never deserved to go through. In the same way that some people detest teams that set up to defend, the Barca style of play while being the polar opposite of that is the same kind of scenario.

There is an arrogance about Barca that they have a divine right to win every game because they play such an attacking game. As if to say how dare you play such a defensive game and not let us steamroll over the top of you. They get angry when they can't score that it becomes more about how negative the opposition were rather than an admission that they simply couldn't find a way through. Barce only have a plan A and if it doesn't work they are stumped. They just kept trying to do the same thing and it wasn't working for them.

Agree with all this. First 20 mins the speed of the Barca attacking was incredible, but 70 minutes later they were trying the same thing only slower and really not stretching Chelsea at all. Chelsea defended well but they weren't really tested when they kept trying to thread a ball through 9 men. Everyone is raving about Chelsea but to be honest Barca were one dimensional and their attack in the end insipid; no plan b/c/d. A decently organised Stoke could have defended as well as Chelsea last night.

+1 I think Stoke will beat Barcelona most nights. They will get a goal with every long throw, set piece and corner! Midgets just can't get up there! 😆

From the point of view of a spectator I like both styles of play. Teams like Barca are a pleasure to watch but the lightning counter attacks of a team like Liverpool in the seventies are so exciting. Then you get teams like Holland with Gullit and Van Basten who can do both.

After ruining Ivanovic's evening, Geoff Shreeves is now going around telling the children in Barcelona that Santa isn't real.

Apparently he also went and told every Barca player that they're out of the final.

An 11pt deficit to a 1pt win in one game. Green arrows everywhere for a change.
