Having hoovered up 13 goals and nine assists from the Spurs midfield last season, Rafael Van der Vaart placed himself firmly in the heavy-hitter bracket. Spot-kicks and set-piece delivery, coupled with a goal threat that few, if any, midfielders can better, he delivers a package that warrants a hefty outlay. Predictably, however, the Dutchman has failed to maintain the consistency demanded of a player with an initial price tag of 10.0 this term.

Van der Vaart’s dairylea hamstrings are the concern. Once again his season has been blighted by twinges and twangs, with constant reoccurrences disrupting his pitch-time, along with more recent calf and ankle injuries. Subsequently, his campaign has been limited to 24 starts: a chain of 11 appearances being his best run of games. Harry Redknapp also appears to remain skeptical on Van der Vaart’s fitness, having subbed him off on 16 occasions so far this term.

Therein lies the problem. Van der Vaart would seem set to start both of Tottenham’s Gameweek 36 fixtures with relegation threatened Blackburn and Bolton, but is unlikely to record 90 minutes in both. Nonetheless, from his support role alongside the awkward talents of Emmanuel Adebayor, Van der Vaart is well capable of inflicting damage and fetching returns given an hour on the pitch.

Having delivered six double figure hauls already this season, including four in five Gameweeks in a chain of 53 points in October, Van der Vaart’s potential to explode is obvious. Few midfielders can rival that and, looking at the fixtures, in addition to Tottenham’s undoubted motivation to attack and score goals as they pursue a Champions League slot, everything falls into place.

With Fantasy Premier League (FPL) ownership of under 6%, the Dutchman also qualifies as an unlikely differential. Just the ticket for those looking to bridge a seemingly impossible mini-league deficit. If Tottenham do overcome their current malaise over their remaining matches, Van der Vaart could well prove to be the catalyst.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Always worth a read and he puts it into perspective well!

It seems that with this DGW being so close to the end that people are desperate to have one more roll of the dice. In a few cases I can understand but hits to bring in defenders? Seems rather risky to me!

Siggy on the bench on the WC?! You're not going to play him in 37&38 so why bench him now. A WCer now shouldn't touch Sig.

A new format suggestion for FFS is maybe have a "questions of the week" section, which people can respond to and discuss. This week two examples would be (c) Jelly or Cissé, or whether to play Rooney or RVP.

Love the phrase Chris Glover uses in his article above - The Regression Monster.

Whilst it doesn't mean players are 'due' as such, it means the player in question is simply outdoing (or under doing) what we'd expect. Bale being the player who is under scoring and Cisse the one who is over scoring.

He makes a very good point that if a player is doing well (for example goals vs shots on target), it DOES NOT mean he'll under perform to balance the books... it means he'll likely return eventually to a more acceptable ratio.

Example: A player scores 5 goals in 10 shots on target. If we say the average is, say, 1 goal in 10 on target, then it doesn't mean the player is expected to go the next 40 shots without scoring, it just means we'd expect the 5 in 10 to calm down eventually.

Opta stats can be very interesting, but some players are just extremely clinical.

Well, when even told me to get HBA in over Petrov i used this sort of reasoning to not listen to them telling me i'm stupid for getting Petrov in.

Petrov had managed almost twice as many shots as HBA in only 4 more appearances and whilst he hadn't been scoring, he was still getting shots away. HBA scoring 2 in 4 shots is all fine and well, but i still went for Petrovs 0 in 8 shots in a similar number of games. Obviously the logic is somewhat flawed but when the stats are that low (as in only over a few games) they can be pretty irrelevant. It's not till around 15 games you can start to work out a proper relevant average and what to expect.

I'd say your defence looks a bit iffy, especially for gameweeks 37 & 38 so it might be worth getting Terry in now to maximise the return on him. I wouldn't bother with DVD since you have a fine midfield.

Against my will, I might have to get Terry in for BAE because my defence is fooked. Waiting to hear for definite on BAE.

I'd love to have a spare striker spot and the requisite cojones for Torres.

Could bring in Peinaar but have Jelly & would have to bench RvP or Kun or Siggy.

Depends how many DGW player you have and in fact what the rest of your team is.

I'm considering it cause I have BAE at the moment.

      Considering BAE>>>>Terry/Cole/Hibbert

unoaime, re: Opta, do you know the average is for goals vs shots on target?

I seem to remember reading something about it pre-season (for last season's stats), but have since forgotten. Was it something like 1 in 5 for forwards?

I don't know the average for forwards only sorry. Overall for last season it was....

      2.79 goals per game
      18 shots per game

Which is around 1 in 5, so yeah.

Shooting accuracy last season was only 36%, so from that you'd imagine 1 in 12 or something resulted in goals. As said though, this is for all positions and not limited to forwards.

Any more news on BAE? Is he deffo out?

All set to do BAE and sacrifice Valencia for Williamson and Dempsey... Fancy a punt on doubling up on a Newcastle cleanie as all the other options for 4.8m to replace BAE clash with my attackers.

Having initially turned my nose up at the thought of bringing Gerrard in to my team for the DGW (much like a fart in a lift) I am finding myself warming to the idea. With clear indications that he will play this weekend he is back on the radar for me. Anyone thinking the same?

Please pick 2 from the following (looking for more opinions please):

    A) Rooney – JELAVIC (other 2 are Rvp and CISSE) - I will bring Rooney back for SWA
    B) BAE – JAGIELKA (no other Everton)
    C) McClean – PIENAAR
    D) McClean – CHELSEA (who?!)
    E) BAE - TERRY/CHELSEA (who?!)

I've decided not to bother with Spurs defenders, if they showed any quality it would be different but they haven't. Steers clear imo.

I was all set for bringing in VDV over Bale this GW, but reading Chris Glover's blog has made me a little less sure of this decision.

Given the choice (assume you have neither), which would you rather have for the DGW?
