It was a close call in the Captain Poll heading into this Gameweek. With Everton and Newcastle handed a pair of fixtures apiece, Nikica Jelavic and Papiss Cisse were virtually neck and neck in light of their recent respective form – both received 26% of the votes cast, with the latter just edging it by a total of 36. After today’s results, however, the Croatian’s owners are the ones with plenty to smile about so far.

Many a Fantasy forward line had been chopped up and re-assembled prior to this morning’s deadline – Robin Van Persie was shipped out by 85,000 owners, while more than 32,000 got rid of Wayne Rooney. It was little wonder – Cisse had notched nine his his last six, while Jelavic had bagged a brace in each of his previous two; both offered the promise of substantial points hauls, with 90,000 and 150,000 Fantasy managers snapping up their services respectively.

While Wigan swiped the wheels off the Newcastle bandwagon this afternoon with a stunning 4-0 triumph, Jelavic racked up the points against travel-sick Fulham. Only six minutes were on the clock before he grabbed his first – powering a penalty past Mark Schwarzer in the opposition goal. A second was added prior to half-time, as he swept home a Steven Pienaar pass to take his tally to eight in seven starts since joining in January.

With Pienaar running riot, providing three assists in a superb 83 minute showing, the Toffees scored four goals for the third successive game – the first time they have done so since 1964. The boost afforded to Everton’s attacking credentials since the introduction of both Pienaar and Jelavic makes David Moyes’ side an altogether different outfit from the one that struggled so badly for goals prior to their arrival – 29 goals in their first 28 Gameweeks has now been followed by 18 in the last six.

Everton now head off to Stoke on Tuesday and, with the Potters failing to return a clean sheet in their last eight, Jelavic’s owners will be licking their lips in anticipation of another goal or two. Cisse rolls up to the Bridge on Wednesday – with Chelsea conceding one goal in their three home games since Roberto Di Matteo took charge, the omens perhaps don’t look too good for those who handed him the armband.

This evening’s game at Carrow Road has already shown there will be a few more surprises before the Gameweek is out. Luis Suarez received a mere 121 votes in the Captain Poll this week but grabbed his highest points haul of the campaign against the Canaries – the Uruguayan bagged a sensational hat-trick and still has Fulham at Anfield on Tuesday.

Newcastle’s hammering also affords Tottenham a lifeline in their race for fourth – a win against Blackburn tomorrow would see Harry Redknapp’s side climb above the Magpies. Those who handed Emmanuel Adebayor, Gareth Bale or Rafael Van der Vaart the armband may have extra cause for optimism, then, and hope that they can – like Suarez – can follow the Jelavic road.*

Anyone willing to give a bit of advice....

    Vorm Krul
Hibbert, Walker, Enrique, Evans, R Taylor
    Bale, VDV, Pienaar, Valencia, Rosicky
    RVP, Cisse, Jelavic

That's me at the moment.... 1 FT and 2.8 in the bank. Was thinking about Taylor out for Verm but was thinking about Walker, Evans, Hibbert at the back next week.

Anyone suggest something else to do with the money maybe..

    Cheers

Taylor to Terry or Verm for their CS chances on the final day, probably Verm is more tempting.

Play Walker, Hibbert, Verm in 38?

Assuming you're happy with your front 3.

Your keepers are dodgy next week though, MCI or mun?

Enrique is playable in 38, though neither side has anything to play for. Or Evans vs Sunderland, so a defender transfer isn't completely necessary.

Thing is with a keeper transfer with 2 games to go is that you're going from a possible 0 points over two weeks to a possible 14 if you're optimistic, not a huge swing over two weeks, and you never know, Newcastle or Swansea could pick up a clean sheet somewhere. (Vorm vs LIV)

A punt on a form player in midfield or up front could pay off much better, but it's harder to pick.

After seeing Norwich tonight I can imagine Verm getting on the score sheet.

I think I'll wait until this game week plays out and see what teams still have something to play for....at this stage that seems like what it's all about.

Cheers for the replies, much appreciated.

O Neill had been saying he wanted to give Gordon some game time, as he's just back from long term injury, and is competing for his Scotland place. Mignolet and he will fight for the first choice spot like the stoke keepers IMO.

Thanks mate! really nice to get some recognition, there is NO way I could do it without everyone here and it really surprises me sometimes that my rank is better than alot of far more knowledgable people I continually take advice from!

Well done, balls over brains seem to have paid off with the 11.27 today

Caulker, Mclean, Aguero > Terry, Pienaar, Jelavic

I had made my mind about Jelavic before he bloody scored at Utd last week and increased attention.

I only just decided on the hit for Sess > Pienaar yesterday though.

Balls over brains seems extreme there actually, as it was more balls AND brains.

The fact it was 3mins before deadline I assumed though, you had been considering it all week and probably still undecided?

ok folks just wanted to get your thoughts on my ML situation. I started off 35 points in front this morning

Me 31 points + De Gea, Santon, Jagielka, VdV (c) x2, Bale x2, Demspey, Jelavic, Cisse

    Him 33 + Terry x 2, Walker x2, Yaya, Valencia, HBA and Jelavic (c)

Have to confess the thought that Spurs and Chelsea cold keep 2 CSs worries me, badly. Him and his jamminess may yet beat me.

    Should I worry?
