It was a close call in the Captain Poll heading into this Gameweek. With Everton and Newcastle handed a pair of fixtures apiece, Nikica Jelavic and Papiss Cisse were virtually neck and neck in light of their recent respective form – both received 26% of the votes cast, with the latter just edging it by a total of 36. After today’s results, however, the Croatian’s owners are the ones with plenty to smile about so far.

Many a Fantasy forward line had been chopped up and re-assembled prior to this morning’s deadline – Robin Van Persie was shipped out by 85,000 owners, while more than 32,000 got rid of Wayne Rooney. It was little wonder – Cisse had notched nine his his last six, while Jelavic had bagged a brace in each of his previous two; both offered the promise of substantial points hauls, with 90,000 and 150,000 Fantasy managers snapping up their services respectively.

While Wigan swiped the wheels off the Newcastle bandwagon this afternoon with a stunning 4-0 triumph, Jelavic racked up the points against travel-sick Fulham. Only six minutes were on the clock before he grabbed his first – powering a penalty past Mark Schwarzer in the opposition goal. A second was added prior to half-time, as he swept home a Steven Pienaar pass to take his tally to eight in seven starts since joining in January.

With Pienaar running riot, providing three assists in a superb 83 minute showing, the Toffees scored four goals for the third successive game – the first time they have done so since 1964. The boost afforded to Everton’s attacking credentials since the introduction of both Pienaar and Jelavic makes David Moyes’ side an altogether different outfit from the one that struggled so badly for goals prior to their arrival – 29 goals in their first 28 Gameweeks has now been followed by 18 in the last six.

Everton now head off to Stoke on Tuesday and, with the Potters failing to return a clean sheet in their last eight, Jelavic’s owners will be licking their lips in anticipation of another goal or two. Cisse rolls up to the Bridge on Wednesday – with Chelsea conceding one goal in their three home games since Roberto Di Matteo took charge, the omens perhaps don’t look too good for those who handed him the armband.

This evening’s game at Carrow Road has already shown there will be a few more surprises before the Gameweek is out. Luis Suarez received a mere 121 votes in the Captain Poll this week but grabbed his highest points haul of the campaign against the Canaries – the Uruguayan bagged a sensational hat-trick and still has Fulham at Anfield on Tuesday.

Newcastle’s hammering also affords Tottenham a lifeline in their race for fourth – a win against Blackburn tomorrow would see Harry Redknapp’s side climb above the Magpies. Those who handed Emmanuel Adebayor, Gareth Bale or Rafael Van der Vaart the armband may have extra cause for optimism, then, and hope that they can – like Suarez – can follow the Jelavic road.*

    Hmmm. Don't really know how to feel tonight. Decided to only go with 5 DGWers so that decision could still come back to bite me. Selling Suarez this week, of all weeks was painful. His replacement (Jelavic) could still outscore him. It all comes down to VdV (c)
    Hope you've all had a good GW so far....apart from that NeedleDick guy

      Oh RCA, you won't believe what I did (or didn't do). I was in bed last night, had my transfers planned and laid out, and was on here late last night making sure they weren't that crazy and told myself I'll think about it for a few minutes before confirming the transfers. Next thing I know I wake up 10 minutes past deadline with the most of the team and captain from last GW. Luckily the armband was on RVP and he delivered today but the plan was to captain Jelavic (who I'd brought in a couple of weeks ago) and bring in Pienaar for Sessegnon so missed out on that and wasn't very happy with that.

        If you had Jelly a few weeks ago, why didn't you set him to captain? Can understand the missing out on transfers but you could've set the captain up! I set my formation/captain as soon as the GW starts, then make transfers at the end. It's a good strategy!

          Well once the GW starts, I set my formation and team up - good thing I did that because last GW I had Jelavic as first sub (and paid dearly for it) and changed that immediately. But I always wait to as close as possible to the deadline on the captain choice and some transfers.

          Lesson learned though! Never again!

        I won't be doing all these coz I don't want to take too many points hits. Should have got Pienaar in today for McClean(who did score to be fair). Decided against it coz I couldn't justify dropping anyone. Moses was one I wanted to do a couple of weeks ago. And Krul and Mignolet don't have great fixtures last two GW so need some GK coverage. Not do much knee jerks because Everton and Wigan have good remaining fixtures. Wigan have just beat some big teams actually so fixtures probably don't mean crap ATM.

      21 with 9 (captain also). -8 hit. Not very good but team well set up for the final run. I took the wave of hits in my league to do that.

        Yeah, I feel your pain...
        I'm sitting around the same.

        Ignored Pienaar and didn't captain Jelavic.

        Everton punished me:(

    Papiss Cisse - you've been great since your move to Newcastle, and a great asset to my team. But if you don't score against Chelsea, I'm gonna f*ck you up 😛

    Eeek. What was a 30 point lead has been cut to 18 (probably 15 after Jelly's 3 BPs). Fancy me to get some of it back with this matchup?

    Me: Bogdan, Skrtel, Dempsey, Bale, P Cisse
    Him: Enrique, Taiwo, Yaya, Rooney, Jelavic

      No the Jellyman is going to bury us both I'm afraid. (My lead was slashed from 47 to 13)

      I just don't know why you wouldn't wait and see what happens in their matches this week. Value really doesn't mean much at this point in the season, you've only got 2-3 transfers left

    Was thinking of THE transfer I didn't make and doing the maths.
    I kept RVP instead of getting Jelly for a hit.

    RVP = 6 +baps
    Jelly = 10 -4(hit)+baps + another game.

    Even stevens give or take a bap so far. I would also have to have taken another hit to get RVP back again for Norwich.
    I also got in Pienaar to get some Eve cover so all in all it ain't so bad.
    Just hope Jelly doesn't get another brace or Hattie!!

    On a scale from 1-Terrible, how bad is a score of 23 without captain and 9 to play??

    🙁
