Later than usual, The Digest examines Newcastle’s unstoppable striker, Tottenham’s return to goalscoring form and the dilemma up front for Fantasy managers ahead of the penultimate Gameweek:

The Player

A pair of sublime finishes at the Bridge proved the weekend blank at Wigan was just a temporary blip. Papiss Cisse’s outstanding goalscoring record since joining Newcastle back in January shows little sign of letting up – last night, the former SC Freiburg man demonstrated he’s capable of producing world-class finishes as well as grabbing the occasional six-yard tap-in for Alan Pardew’s side.

With nine goals in his six appearances prior to the double Gameweek, Cisse was transferred in by over 90,000 Fantasy managers but failed to fire against the Latics, hitting the woodwork twice as his scoring streak came to an unexpected end. Up against a buoyant Chelsea side, many had expected him to struggle but last night’s double highlighted just what sort of player Pardew has acquired in the winter window.

A tally of 13 goals in 12 games, with maximum bonus points in six of his last eight appearances, Cisse’s confidence is sky-high right now and the scene is set for him to possibly have a major say in the destination of the title. City arrive at the Sports Direct Arena in desperate need of the three points prior to their Gameweek 38 home match with QPR – Roberto Mancini’s men have returned three clean sheets in their last four, but Cisse could well spoil their ambitions this Sunday. It’s by no means a straightforward fixture for the in-form forward and, with a trip to Goodison to follow, he could barely ask for a trickier end to the campaign – David Moyes’ side have seven clean sheets in their last eight at home. Only 9,000 Fantasy managers have snapped up his services so far but, with an average 8.4 points per game, plenty more will want a piece of the action prior to Saturday’s deadline.

The Team

Tottenham were hardly in the best of form prior to their double Gameweek. Harry Redknapp’s side had registered a single win in the previous nine Gameweeks but a pair of fixtures against relegation candidates Blackburn and Bolton proved the perfect platform to re-ignite their push for a fourth place finish.

A return to form saw Spurs rack up six goals over the Gameweek, with Rafael Van der Vaart the main protagonist. A goal against Blackburn means the Dutchman has now notched in each of his last three home starts, while a goal and assist contribution at the Reebok brought his score for the Gameweek to 22 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points. With Gareth Bale also weighing in with a trio of assists and Emmanuel Adebayor bagging a brace against the Trotters, the confidence is back and, with the Fantasy heavyweights amongst the north London outfit flourishing once again, their owners will be in confident mood heading into the final two Gameweeks.

Spurs now travel to Aston Villa – the midlands side have picked up just two points from their last four home matches and are falling flat in their battle to stave off the threat of relegation. Gameweek 38 then sees Fulham arrive at the Lane; the Cottagers will be boosted by their midweek win at Liverpool but Kenny Dalglish’s decision to rest and rotate proved the home side’s undoing. Three defeats in their last five road trips is more indicative of Fulham’s form and, with the likelihood of a win required to seal their spot in fourth, Spurs are certain to go all out to finish the season in style.

The Talking Point

With eight teams facing a pair of fixtures last time round, forward lines were shaken up and restructured ahead of the double Gameweek. A willingness to hop aboard the Nikica Jelavic and Papiss Cisse bandwagons saw Robin Van Persie and Wayne Rooney sacrificed by many – the Gunners skipper was shipped out by 84,000 Fantasy managers, while almost 32,000 rid themselves of the United man’s services.

Both, however, look strong captaincy favourites ahead of the weekend’s schedule. Van Persie now faces Norwich at home and, with the Canaries shipping 11 goals in their last three games, Paul Lambert’s side seem to have taken their foot off the gas now their top-flight safety is assured. Arsene Wenger’s men desperately need the points – a win for Chelsea in the Champions League Final against Bayern Munich would mean that only the top three qualify next season. The Gunners are currently in third but can afford no more slip-ups, with Spurs and Newcastle just a single point behind them.

Rooney welcomes Swansea to Old Trafford in United’s final home game of the season. Neck and neck with City in the race for the title, it could well come down to goal difference and, at present, United are eight goals worse off than their neighbours. All-out attack is likely, then, and a look at Rooney’s recent home stats suggests points are on the agenda; he has scored and picked up maximum bonus in each of his last three at Old Trafford – indeed, he has bagged a brace in four of his last six at home, such has been his consistency.

While both players face tricky away trips on the final Gameweek, with Van Persie at West Brom and Rooney at Sunderland, a switch to Sergio Aguero or Carlos Tevez is an easy move, with QPR rolling up to the Etihad. At present, almost 12,000 Fantasy managers have transferred in Van Persie, with 9,000 bringing in Rooney. With so much at stake for both players, entering the Gameweek with only one, or neither, in our starting line-ups this weekend looks a seriously risky move indeed.

I have a problem, I really think I need to get in Rooney this week but with RVP & Jelly and Ade upfront I need to drop out Ade.
To do this, I have to sell Dempsey -> Moses or Maloney.
Main rival who Im 27 points behind has Roo and Demps and hav only 0.6 in bank. Stick or twist??

    my team is
    Krul Mignolet
    Jevans......Kompany......Huth.....Kelly......Verm

    Valencia......Demps.....Myachi.....Siggy....Bale

    Jelly....Ade.....RVP

    Pisse -> Rooney (OR) Jellyfish->Rooney
Rooney's home record is pretty good (10 goals in 6 games) & due to City's superior goal difference, United will definitely be going all guns & I expect Rooney to grab a brace, So that makes Rooney a must have for the last two game weeks.
Am not entirely convinced to ship Pisse out because of his exemplary run, The wigan game was definitely a blip & he was a bit unlucky not to have scored & in this GW he comes up against arguably one of the best defences in the league, Looking at the quality of goals he's scored against Chelsea & the fact that Newcastle will be pushing for a CL spot, I believe he's gonna make a mockery of City's defence.
Jellyfish has an easier opponent in Wolves, 6 goals in his last 4 starts & considering Everton's form, I believe he will definitely score.
Here comes the question: Pisse -> Rooney (OR) Jellyfish -> Rooney. ( I've got RVP )
Advice will be much appreciated lads.

    hi guys,

i have a big defense problem. i have vorm and mig (who have terrible fixtures and mig may not even play), and verm, jags, evans (inj), cahill (inj) and caulker (tough games). i already made a transfer this week, so anything i do will be a -4 hit. i also have 1.2 in the bank. what should i do? should i trade out vorm for a keeper with better fixtures, or trade cahill for a healthy defender?

i will have enough, but if mig, cahill and evans (already confirmed hes out by saf) are out, i'll have to double on swansea def and certainly do not want that. surely it's worth a -4 punt?

but then again, lets say swansea concede up to 4 goals, meaning 0 pts. if i take a -4 hit, it means the player i get HAS to keep a cs in order for me to gain (and a mere 2 pts at that). so i think as long as i can field 11 players, i shouldnt take a hit for a defender or goalie. what do u think?

0 points wouldn't matter either way though would it. A player who doesn't play gets 0 as well so you could go in with only 9 players and it wouldn't make any difference.

Yeah thats my point. You might be worth having a 0 than taking a risk. At this stage of the season its best not to worry about the extra 2 or 3 points you might lose out on in defense and worry about the extra 5-10 points you might lose out on in attack if you don't make particular changes there.

Hmm. Ivanovic and Huth are good attacking options as well. You will have to trust your gut and figure out who is more likely to get a goal and cleansheets in the final two games. It might be worth it.

I'm thinking same thing re hit for a probable dud defender.
I think it is only worth it if the def your taking out will not play again, through either injury or awful fixtures.
AND if it's likely the guy you bring in will deliver 4 +points over 2 weeks.

          Does that help?

ya but that's always difficult to call for a defender to see if they will get 4+ pts. it also makes it harder that the fixtures are kind of tricky in the last 2 gw, so it's even tougher to decide

Maybe not a bad option but I think Evans might be back for GW38 and it wouldn't surprise me if Richards started in GW38. The thing is I think my defense will be fine in the last week so is it really worth getting a defender for only GW37? Surely it would be better to sell the likes of HBA/Siggy or Ade and Cisse > Rooney and RVP?

    Defense is

    Krul-Vorm
    Terry-Raylor-Taiwo-Evans-Enrique.

I don't think it's worth a hit for defender in this part of season. So I think I give Raylor 2 starts, because he served me so well earlier this season.

It all depends on the first 45 minutes of the newcastle game if city are 2 or 3 goals up it could be a rout. Draw or losing, then a nervy mancini may take him off.
I think if he plays 70-80 mins he will score, which means rvp has to score 2 just to pay for his point hit. One goal in 12 hours of football from open play.
It's a risk, but 15 points in 2 weeks isn't impossible... Tevez much better option in GW 38

You make a very good point. Never thought about it that way but it definitely makes sense and sounds like its something SAF would do but I do think Man U's approach will heavily depend on Man City's result. If Man City win then you have to assume they will beat QPR at home and it would go down to goal difference. If however they draw or lose then as you say playing it safe and going for the 3 points would be top of the agenda.

Last year I was 174th in world and am currently 240th. I want to better last year's finish. While I'm usually pretty confident in my selections, this week is throwing me for a loop. RVP seems the obvious choice for Captain, but I'm not sure how to proceed. Have strikers Rooney, Cisse and Jelavic. My choices seem to be:

    A) Rooney>RVP
    B) Cisse to RVP (4 pt hit)
    C) Do nothing

    Perspectives would be appreciated.

It's tough. I'm not sure myself whether to get rid of Cisse or Jelavic.

I'm leaning towards Cisse simply because i can do that without a hit and i'm not confident he'll outscore Jelavic by 4 points (if at all)

Victor Moses, yet another star coming from the Palace academy, if hes helped you at all lately, you're welcome.

    Cisse > Rooney
    HBA > Maloney

    -4 hit

    ????

Cisse is in awesome form but how long can he keep going?

'For comparison, Cisse is currently converting shots on target at a rate of one goal every 1.5 shots (10 goals on 15 shots). Leo Messi, perhaps the greatest player of all, enjoying one of the best seasons of all time, is converting them at a rate of a goal every 2.1 shots (65 goals on 139 shots). The natural response is that these are different players in different leagues but show me a player who can sustainably convert chances at this rate and I'll listen.' - chris glover

    In a pickle...

I'm a measly 7 points clear in my mini-league and my team - particularly my defense - is in tatters:

    Krul (Mignolet)
    Vermaelen | Enrique | Evans* | BAE* | Caulker
    Dempsey | Bale | Sigurdsson | Sessegnon | Valencia
    RVP | Jelavic | Cisse

Want to get rid of Sess or Siggy for Moses but I'm torn between taking a 4pt hit to get rid of BAE or Evans... should I do the Moses transfer and just play Caulker or bring in someone like Terry/Ivanovic as well?

What should I do, fellow DZ's?

You not want Rooney this week or are you happy with your front 3?

In your position, I would look to bring in a defender. With two already confirmed out, you are just one player away from being a man down. Add to that caulker has zero chance of getting a clean sheet.

My defence is also in tatters, but I can play Terry, Santon, and Turner. All have rubbish fixtures. Is it worth a hit to get in big verm?
