Antolin Alcaraz keeps Wigan in the Premier League with a dramatic late winner at Ewood Park. Jean Beausejour proves to be the key creator once again as the Latics chalk up their sixth victory in the last eight Gameweeks. Blackburn, on the other hand, are relegated to the Championship after another dire display:

Antolin Alcaraz
The Latics may been outstanding at the back in recent home games – their last three at the DW have seen clean sheets picked up against Stoke, United and Newcastle – but on the road, it’s been a different matter altogether. Roberto Martinez’s side had returned a single away clean sheet all season prior to last night, in their very first road trip at Swansea back in Gameweek 2. Alcaraz’s winner in the 1-0 triumph means he has now returned a couple of goals and four clean sheets in the last seven Gameweeks and, with the maximum bonus points in the bag, has averaged over 6 points per game over that period of time – more than any other player in Martinez’s side since Gameweek 31 onwards. His presence at the back is clearly vital – the Latics have seven clean sheets in the 25 games Alcaraz has featured in, compared to a single clean sheet in the 12 matches he missed through injury.

Jean Beausejour
The former Birmingham man has been a crucial component of the Latics’ 3-4-2-1 system since joining back in January. Beausejour has started every match from Gameweek 23 onwards and has picked up in consistency over the last few Gameweeks. Last night’s assist for Alcaraz’s last-minute goal was his fourth in his last seven appearances but, despite his recent form, a mere 103 Fantasy managers drafted him in prior to Saturday’s deadline – Victor Moses was snapped up by over 93,000 Fantasy owners in comparison. With the pressure now off, it’s basically a straight fight between Bolton and QPR to avoid the drop; Wigan, on the other hand, play host to relegated Wolves next Sunday and, given their outstanding run of form, more Fantasy managers will be turning to the Latics as the season draws to a close.

Yakubu
Blackburn’s Ewood Park blank was the fifth time in the last seven matches Steve Kean’s side have failed to find the net, with their over-reliance on the Nigerian’s goals proving their undoing. While Yakubu has netted 16 times this term, averaging 4.7 points per game (almost on a par with Juan Mata’s 4.8, for example) he has found the net in just two of his last 12 matches – with the goals drying up for the summer signing, only Junior Hoilett, with seven strikes all season, has stepped up. With confidence rock bottom and the fans venting their fury, a trip to the Bridge next Sunday could see plenty snapping up Chelsea’s assets as they seek to finish the season with a win over Kean’s beleaguered side.

Ya Fergie was talking up Wigan's chances to do United a favour just like he is this week for QPR.

It was also the game Drogba had that tantrum when he wanted to take the penalty to be top scorer 😆

Last GW of the season is always a disaster for me, a few years back I lost a 30 point mini league lead because Stuart (yes that useless bellend) Downing scored 4 goals and my rival had captained him out of total desperation.

Ha Ha! Thats amazing, i did what your rival did, i didnt captain him tho, that was against City wasnt it? What was the score again? I think i was about 20+ points behind and he got a ridiculous score of about 15 for his entire team. Those were the days!

I remember both those weeks! The one in 2010 was the worst week of that season for me (GW rank of around 2M), and the one in 2011 was the best week of that season for me (GW rank of around 1K). No Chelsea coverage in 2010 and Lescott's 15 point haul in 2011 were the reasons.
Very tempted to go for Lescott this week too 🙂

Any wonderful suggestions re what to do? As with millions of others chasing a mini league lead in last week, and need some suggestions. Think I am screwed. He has 12 point lead (+ Terry and Torres to go this evening)... I can't go with Aguero, so will probably cross my fingers and bring in Tevez for Rooney. Is this enough, or should I consider a hit for Silva/Mata/Lampard (for Bale)?

    me:
    Hart
    Evans (or Cueller), Hibbert, Caulker
    VDV Dempsey Bale Siggy
    Jelly Rooney RVP
    Bench: Valencia, Turner,

    Him:
    Krul
    Kompany Terry Caulker
    VDV Bale Moses Valencia
    Aguero (c) Torres RVP.
    Bench: Shotton, McClean, Hanley

it's a minor miracle silva didn't get an assist v newcastle. he found aguero when his corner-bound shot was saved by krul early on. he passed to barry when his 2 efforts were cleared by coloccini and santon off the line, he crossed to yaya toure when he missed a header from 6 yards, his pass put aguero through on goal when he shaved the post, his corner found dzeko who's effort somehow bounced into the ground and over the bar. must have been a key pass jamboree

Last weekend's trip to Old Trafford could have been so much better had Newcastle held out. As such it was a strange atmosphere going into the game and a bit too muted at times during it (< Insert Prawn Sandwich joke here). Altogether it felt very reminiscent of the 2009-10 season when we needed Chelsea to drop points at home to Wigan on the final day and instead they thrashed them 8-0. If City do now go on to win it (yes there's a minute chance Mark Hughes might pull off some kind of minor miracle) then the only consolation will be that we amassed 89pts which would be a record for runners up and enough to win most other EPL seasons. Is this the closest contested Premier League season ever?

    PREMIER LEAGUE WINNERS AND RUNNERS-UP

    1992-93 – Man Utd 84pts (Villa 74pts)*
    1993-94 – Man Utd 92pts (Blackburn 84pts)*

    1995-96 – Man Utd 82pts (Newcastle 78pts)
    1996-97 – Man Utd 75pts (Newcastle 68pts)
    1997-98 – Arsenal 78pts (Man Utd 77pts)
    1998-99 – Man Utd 79pts (Arsenal 78pts)
    1999-00 – Man Utd 91pts (Arsenal 73pts)
    2000-01 – Man Utd 80pts (Arsenal 70pts)

There's an argument for it. They were pretty awesome that season. I was actually at Old Trafford for the 3-2 against Villa towards the end of that season i.e. the Macheda wondergoal.

I can tell you when we were 2-1 down and on the verge of our 3rd defeat on the trot (previously lost 4-1 to Liverpool at OT and also to Fulham although the scoreline escapes me) it certainly looked like Liverpool were going to overhaul us then. Everyone tipped them for the title the following season but the rest is history.

    Howard
    Kompany, Boyce, Walker
    Dempsey, Bale, Valencia, Petrov
    RVP, Tevez, Cisse

    Subs: Vorm, Sigurdsson, Simpson, Senderos

I'm quite happy with my team. Not sure whether to play Siggy or not. I'd like to have Aguero instead of Tevez, would it be silly to transfer one for the other? Aguero has been awesome and he isn't getting subbed after 60+ mins.

Right so I imagine alot of us have the problem of chasing a lead in the final GW with very similar players to ours rivals and after a explosive differential.

Who do we think are good punts for this week for those of us who can't just play safe?

Im thinking Torres or a City attacker seem to be the main candidates. Anyone have any other punts from other teams seeing as the last game of the season can often be very explosive even for the teams with nothing to play for?

Hoolahan is currently on my list of 'possible punts'

Also as much as people may think this is suicide im considering ditching RVP too free funds and have a punt on Torres/Tevez as my two rivals have RVP and I really need a gamble.

Im thinking of going crazy and doing this for a 4 pointer:

        Dempsey(would be benched anyway)/RVP/Jelavic to Lampard/Holt/Aguero

On paper it might look bad taking out RVP&Jelavic but with both my rivals having them both maybe I might take the gamble.

since i have nothing to play for already in my mini league...already won it..

and since im a manutd fan...i think im going to take a punt on cisse...especially after he said in soccernet that...he jus needed a result and no necessarily a win..=D

25 points behind. Can't cover my rivals attacking options because he has Torres, RVP, Aguero (c). I have Rooney, Jelly and RVP... how about ignoring the obvious Rooney to Tevez(c) and praying and doing something outlandish and transfer in :

Ivanovic for captain????? - a goal a clean sheet and boners would give him somewhere approaching 30 points.

Really? Neither of those 3 options sound that appealing tbh. Mata has the CL final and i can't see him starting vs Blackburn when there's no need to risk him. Silva isn't that explosive either. See the 6-1 vs Norwich & City's recent results. For an end of season punt, he's not that exciting IMO, vs a QPR side fighting to stay up. Nasri might not start.

I disagree Demi, City are insane at home. Fair enough Mata has the CL but I think he'll start with the gap between tbh. Nasri has been linking up fantastically with Silva and either one of them will score well in the final week in a let's face it, doomed QPR team.
