[sbu_large_image] Season Review

Jonny Evans was an unlikely Fantasy football hero. Much maligned going into this season, there was clear doubts over the 24-year-old’s credentials as a top flight defender, amongst fierce competiion in the United ranks. Evans extinguished those concerns with his displays last term, establishing himself as a Fantasy prospect in the process.

A knee injury suffered by Nemanja Vidic in the opening game of the season, suddenly promoted the Belfast born defender in the United pecking order and put Fantasy managers on alert. While the early season form of both Phil Jones and Chris Smalling saw him suffer rotation and uncertainty, by Gameweek 21, Evans’ own form had established him as first choice alongside Rio Ferdinand. He went on to contribute a string of consistent displays, emerging as Ferguson’s defensive rock in the absence of the inspirational Serb.

In Fantasy terms, we suddenly had a cheap prospect amongst a United defence that was returning regular clean sheets. Evans was irresistible for the final four months of the season, his prospects only derailed by an ankle injury that ruled him out of two of the final three matches.

The Statistics

Evans started last term as a 4.5 prospect in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, but was not expected to play anything more than a cameo role. He went on to record 28 starts, however, including 15 consecutive appearances from January onwards. He recorded eight clean sheets in this regular spell, including a run of six shutouts in seven, from Gameweek 28 to 34. Evans’ FPL price increased to a season high of 5.7 by Gameweek 35, only to be stalled by that late injury.

Evans boosted his defensive returns with a goal and three assists, while 11 FPL bonus points helped him to a place in the top ten value defenders for the season. He ended with an FPL ownership of over 8%, although that had declined rapidly following his injury late in the campaign.

The Prospects

Like so many of last season’s prosperous Fantasy assets, Evans will pose a problem next term. It’s a given that he’ll be subject to a price rise across the games, with the FPL likely to add him to the bracket alongside Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Rio Ferdinand and Rafael. That will form a group of five United defenders, all likely vying for two spots in Sir Alex Ferguson’s defence.

Despite missing the pre-sesason, Vidic is expected to return from his cruciate knee injury to be in contention for the start of the 2012/13 campaign. While he may well be eased back into action, there’s little doubt that the Serb will be first choice with the slot alongside him up for grabs. Rio Ferdinand accumulated 29 starts last season – it seems likely that he will be subject to rotation, mainly with Evans, throughout the next campaign.

Fantasy managers will need to examine and analyse United’s pattern of rotation, with Champions League and Carling Cup football giving Ferguson the chance to spread opportunities and establish a first choice defensive lineup for the Premier League. It remains to be seen whether Evan’s is part of that.

Given the price rise and inevitable concern over his starts, there’s little doubt that Fantasy managers will approach with caution. Evans may well be relegated back to a familiar role in Fantasy terms: serving as a cheaper route into a solid defensive unit, when injuries and suspensions point to regular starts. Much depends on the fitness and form and Ferdinand.

The prospect of Rafael or Jones cementing their roles, or even Anders Lindagaard displacing David de Gea in goal once again, will likely stall on our commitment to the United defence. Vidic and Patrice Evra will offer the assured but expensive route to their returns: the fixture list will likely determine just how many look to acquire their services.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I'd say they're pretty decent. Hutchinson has zero experience in CL so they will have been desperate to get GC fit. If he doesn't, I still have back-up in Van Buyten though.

    Morning all.

I have no clue what I'm doing with this McDonalds fantasy thing, but I'm looking at the rules and thinking there's not really any point saving your wildcard beyond the group stage, so current plan is to get players for the first set of fixtures, then wildcard to a completely different set for week 2.

With that in mind, any comments on my current team would be greatly appreciated. Any howlers etc, or have I just missed the point completely?!

    Akinfeev Pletikosa
    Papadopolous Alba Kadlec Evra Olsson
    Polanski Rosicky Sneijder Modric Nasri

Nice lineup witch some decent differs in modrich and Nasri, Rosicky- if you look at their first week fixtures, they are pretty difficult dought. So if you are going with the gw 2 WC, look at some swedes, ukrainians, croatians maybe a russian in the midfield. Or maybe you can fit Özil in.

I'm sure I read that the coach was actually considering Chalkias as his first choice - the worst keeper I've ever seen in a Portsmouth shirt and that's some achievement!

I think this little thread just shows Greek keepers are probably best avoided for now.

The point about England is that Hodgson had a great chance to move forward. In my opinion, he has blown that already. It is bad enough that he is taking Terry, but to make the awful Gerrard captain as welll ... I have lost interest.

Too much on GKs, Lloris is a waste of money if Akinfeev gets a cleanie. Lose Meireles as he hasn't a great record and has a tough group. Consider doubling on Dutch attackers as they have the easiest GW tie, Id be tempted by Iniesta > Sneijder. Like Huntelaar up top as long as he starts, Robben didn't play in the qualifiers so keep your eye on whether this will affect his starting role.

Sorry for the repost but here goes :
Lads Croatia won’t beat Eire, trust me on this , Traps team is built on defence first then attack, never really conceding more than 1 and not scoring more than 2, this group outside of Espania whom I expect to win it will come down to tactics between croatia,Italy and Eire . I don’t expect many goals in their matchups and possibly a few 0-0 , I would recommend defenders from this group. Don’t be surprised if espania drop points and have a dogfight to get out of group, being realistic I don’t see much between Croa/Italy/Eire and tbh it’s difficult to call 2nd.
I can see Cro v Eire and ESP v Italy being draws
and then Esp beating the Irish with Cro v Italy another draw
Leaving ESP beating Cro and a winner takes all scenario in Eire v Italy
Eire are capable of beating italy IMO ,
    But time will tell.

GW1 games will both be tight, as you say I can also see 2 bore draws to start. Don't see any good captaincy options for this week so make sure you have a good option for Group D matches. Can see Spain sticking a few past Croatia/Ireland though.

IMO ROI will get 4 pts, I've not missed a game in 20 yrs and for me This team is limited but trap has them well organised and motivated, it won't be from the lack of effort. ROI tend to play better against 'bigger' teams lets not forget they got out of a difficult group and only for the hand of scum henrie we would have made the last world cup as well.

    Current Draft

    Akinfeev (Given)
    Perquis Papa Ward Simunic (Olsson)
    Dzagoev Sneijder Ozil Mandzukic (Yarmalenko)
    Lewandowski (C) RVP (Ibra)

    - Want RVP (or Huntelaar) over Robben as I believe he is the best Captain option for this set of games
    - Gone cheap in defence as you can swap easily, gone for a ratio of 2-0-2-1 (players each day) giving me good options to do this
    - Don't mind doubling on Irish defence as they are pretty solid, expect Akinfeev to keep a cleanie anyhow and can always swap Ward for Olsson on last day
    - Lack Zhirkov and Kadlec which could hurt but sacrificies have to be made
    - Lewandowski > RVP > Mandzukic > Ibra Captaincy Options
    - WC GW2 (as there is too much uncertainty GW3 even for those using a wildcard) to bring in the likes of Ronaldo Benzema Llorente Terry etc

    What do you reckon?

Double Ireland defense is too much and I would not have a Croat defender at all- very bad defensive record in the qualifiers.
The rest I really dont know how to comment, this is more of a matter of personal opinion. I wont get Dzagoev since russia are a very low scoring tham and I think that 7,5 is too much for a russian attacker. I dont know anything about polish international form so hard to say what Lewandowski will do and RVP is a risk as you said.

Don't worry about Irish doubles, I guarantee at least 1 cs, that's as good as most teams , 2 cs will be hard to find so IMO cheapies are the order of the day and the Irish have a reasonable solid defence.

Id take that bet, your defense is very good Ill give you that. But its hard to see any CS against an all out attacking Croat side or Italy and Spain. If you played the CL game than you would know that good defenders are key in this format., so cheapies wont cut it.

Croats have had so much turnover in the back, so there is no stability. I think Keano could nick 1, Maybe have their keeper instead, or at least someone cheaper. For 5,5 you could have Debuchy(my personal favorite for the first GW) or Kadlec.

I also had RVP or Hunterlaar as first names on my teamsheet, but will need to see the coach say something about their starting lineup before I make that choice.

FPL players that would be on your radar for next season, if they moved clubs?

Adam Johnson and Defoe would be 2 I'd definitely be tempted by.

On my radar are a few good players from the relegated teams likely to remain in the Prem with other teams:
Bolton - Eagles & Reo-Coker (who has opted out of his contract already so a free agent)
Blackburn - Martin Olsson, Hoilett & Yakubu
      Wolves - Jarvis & Fletcher
