Our analysis of next month’s Euro 2012 tournament in Poland and Ukraine continues with a look at Group B. Having run the rule over Denmark’s Fantasy assets yesterday, it’s time to turn our attentions to one of the favourites to take the trophy – Germany.

Joachim Low’s men get their campaign underway on Saturday June 9, the second day of the tournament, with a 7.45pm kick-off against Portugal. Next up is a clash with Holland four days later – once again, Germany have an evening match here – before they square up to Denmark in their final group match, at 7.45pm on Sunday June 17.

While Denmark are considered the weakest link in what looks the toughest group of all, Morten Olsen’s men finished above Portugal in qualifying, with six wins and just a single defeat in eight matches. A second place finish mean the Portuguese had to see off Bosnia Herzegovina 6-2 in the play-offs, while Holland topped their group with nine wins and 37 goals in 10 games.

The Road to Qualification

Germany arrive as one of only two teams – along with Spain – to win all of their qualifying matches; Low’s side ran way with their six-team group, with second placed Turkey finishing 13 points adrift of top spot. A consistently reliable source of goals, they found the net at least three times in eight of their showdowns and racking up a total of 34 goals. At the back, while they shipped just seven goals, their attacking forays made them susceptible to the counter – they failed to keep a clean sheet in their last five and chalked up just four in total.

Most Appearances: Neuer, Lahm, Muller (10), Ozil, Podolski, Badstuber (9), Kroos, Khedira (8)

Top Goalscorer: Klose (9), Gomez (6), Ozil (5), Podolski, Muller, Schurrle (3)

Top Assists: Ozil (7), Muller (5), Podolski (3)

The Likely Lads

In spite of a 10.0 price tag, it’s no real surprise to see Mesut Ozil as the most popular German player so far in the McDonalds game, with 26.3% ownership. Playing in the hole in a 4-2-3-1, Ozil flourished in the qualifying campaign – he was top for assists, with seven, and also found the net five times, playing a role in more of Germany’s goals than any other playing. The Real Madrid man also takes the majority of set-pieces and arrives in strong form, with four goals and 17 assists in the previous La Liga campaign.

Although the talents of Toni Kroos, Marco Reus and Mario Gotze offer cheaper routes into the midfield area, not one of the trio is likely to cement a role in Low’s first XI, with game time off the bench more likely. Bastian Schweinsteiger, on the other hand, is a nailed-on option in the central midfield double-pivot and, priced at 9.0, offers a cheaper alternative to Ozil. Schweinsteiger’s goal threat is highlighted by 23 goals in 90 appearances for the national side – he also stepped up for Germany’s last spot-kick, in a 3-1 win in Turkey, though his confidence will now doubt have taken a dip after Saturday’s miss in the Champions League Final defeat against Chelsea.

With uncertainty surrounding the lone frontman role, Thomas Muller and Lukas Podolski both offer the security of starts on the right and left of the attacking midfield three respectively. While some may be deterred by their classification as forwards, Germany’s attacking potential meant the pair still picked up plenty returns in qualifying – they grabbed three goals apiece, though Muller edged it for assists by five to three. Priced at 9.5 to Podolski’s 10.0, Muller is kinder on the budget and, with just 6.1% ownership, in addition to two goals in the last three friendlies, may appeal to those scouring the market for differentials.

Cheeky Punt

With just four clean sheets accrued over their ten group games and a host of other sides offering strong cut-price alternatives at the back, it’s hard to be overly enthused with regards to Germany’s costly defensive options. At 8.0, Philipp Lahm is the joint most expensive defender in the McDonalds game and despite his occasional corner kicks, he failed to score in qualifying and has had a disappointing domestic campaign with Bayern, providing just three assists for the Bundesliga runners-up. For those intent on snapping up one of Germany’s backline, Jerome Boateng comes in at 6.5, far easier on the budget than Lahm, and looks to have made the right-back slot his own.

If any one of Miroslav Klose or Mario Gomez can make the lone forward role their own, the potential for points looks substantial. Problem is, there’s so much uncertainty over their game time that snapping up either of the pair’s services looks nothing more than a punt at present. Both have alternated up front over Germany’s last six, with three starts apiece and, priced at 11.5, are surely too much budget to gamble on – the upcoming friendlies against Switzerland and Israel may offer more clarity on the situation. Klose certainly offers the better chance of a differential – at present he has just 1.8% ownership to Gomez’s 14.3%, despite scoring nine goals in qualifying to the latter’s six.

Well stop loading up heavy in midfield..... Its a tactic not seen round here for a reason. The recovered ball tactic benefits defenders quite a lot, and assists are a lot harder to come by under these rules.

Nothing wrong with good midfielders, but that defence is looking very weak.

I think the point of this format (from playing the McD's World Cup game, and the Champs League game the last two seasons) is that it rewards strength in depth. Balance is key.

    Assists

If I am reading the rules correct, if a player hits a magnificent crossfield ball to a player who then beats a defender before scoring there will be no assist but the Young/Rooney tread on the ball free kick will still count ... 😕

Yeah, but in the Pro game they have a much more inclusive assist definition. Including double assists for flick-ons. So the assist quotient will balance out over the totality of your fantasy matrix.

Yeah that's what they say, but I have a feeling they'll be lax with the implementation. I think assists will be given if they're the last pass regardless of where the ball goes next, but no assists for penalties and free kicks (yay!)

          Which is a bit harsh.

They have the same ruling about beating defenders in UCLFF but I think it has only very rarely if ever been applied to rule out an assist.

No, I've played the fantasy UCL game with the same rules and I assure you assists were given when rightfully due. This rule rather doesn't give assists for goals where someone makes a simple 1 yard pass before Messi runs about 50 yards, beats 5 defenders and slots it home, like Ben Arfa's goal vs Bolton last month. This rule also doesn't give assists for a pass that is completely changed by hitting defenders left right and centre in the box before falling to an attacker who scores, unlike FPL. I think this rule rules.

It's not really something to worry about, I've never really had a reason to begrudge this rule, it's just that we're totally spoilt with assists by FPL.

Basically the teams do head towards the same. The issue is compounded when expensive teams advance. For the UCL version Barce and RM players were much more expensive than their Chelsea and Bayern counterparts so it was difficult to have more than a few of those players.

              This is true.

In the final though you have the chance to go either Bayern, Chelsea or a mix, and that will make all the difference.

True, it did work out very well in that sense. Image though, if you will, what if the finals were RM and Barce...

Even with the squad I had of Bayern and Chelsea players, I still had a bench of Jorge (APOEL) and two very cheap & injured Bayern players.

I am more just saying if the finals are the Dutch, German, Spanish and X, teams might have a good number from team X.

Don't think so. A lot of people will have similar teams, especially if they take the fundamentalist-FFS-groupthink team selection philosophy, methodology and mentality.

But even then you've got differentials and captain points.

And the added dimension to captaincy in this game is all about whether you stick or twist with your captain points. And if you select the right gambles early in the round and last resorts you can confidently back.

I went defense heavy and downgraded Dzagoev to Andrews, but that's my choice. Looks good to go. I think you'll do well with that team, but might struggle for top honors, because there are clashes.

Dzagoev and Lewandowski contradict your Group A defense. Just a thought if you wanted to double up and take more risks.

I like that in this format. Hedging your attack and defence in early matchups is a great way to a) increase your chances of almost certainly banking SOME points, and b) if they're good players anyway there's nothing to stop them BOTH getting above average returns. With the security that c) you're going to have drop some players, might as well have a number to pick from early on.

Dunno where some of you guys have Bonucci from. He's probably not going to start. He doesn't start for Juventus ahead of Barzagli or Chiellini, so no reason why he would at International level. Only chance he gets to play is if Chiellini is injured.

Sure. But I'm not sure we can be certain about any players with such a small sample of games, so historical precedence is a valid basis to guess.

I think it's about consistency in defence and the Italians know all about that.

I have this funny impression that in the Italian psyche the national team is a different beast from club football, and you stick with combinations like Maldini Nesta Cannavaro Zambrotta for a generation. Regardless of club form or allegiances...

Though from an England perspective there's a pretty strong case for Cahill-Terry-Cole for club & country.

      Yeah... That's what I thought.

I'm thinking maybe Kjaer out, Piszczek in, but they are both pretty good-sounding names...

I'm not sure why, but I reckon Kjaer is really undervalued. I have the impression that he's a better prospect than Agger, for less. It's quite a gamble given his opposition, but big gambles pay big rewards. I think he's guaranteed to start, and Denmark have a pretty strong defence.

I wouldn't say 100%, but I would say 95%. While they could push Goetze, Mueller or Oezil wide left into his spot, Podolski is experienced, fast and has a killer instinct. They have also, in the past, favored Oezil in the middle, with Mueller out right, with Goetze on bench. Unless he manages to force someone out--and even if he does--I don't see Podolski being the one making way.

Mark Hughes thinks he is a top manager but gives Kieron Dyer a one year contract. This is a player who has played four minutes all season, started just 17 matches in the last five years playing the full 90 only once. Mind boggling!!

Playing a fantasy game where you simply pick one player from each team which you keep the same for the whole tournament, prize is an olympic ticket!
    Subs score half points.

    GK Szczęsny
    DF Chiellini
    DF Kadlec
    DF Papadopolous
    MF Özil
    MF Sneijder
    MF Young
    MF Dzagoev
    FW Villa (C)
    FW Benzema
    FW Ronaldo
    GK Given
    DF Rakitskiy
    MF Eriksen
    MF Krancjar
    FW Ibrahimovic

Any advice would be much appreciated.

This is a shit format of a game. I've played it before. It's hard to keep interest if you get to the final and only have Ozil playing for example.

      Krancjar, eh? Interesting...

But I think Mandzukic is probably a better bet.

The ones I'm not so sure about:

Szczesny - might be tempted to gamble on a Polish attacker
Similarly Given - can't see him getting you anything. Keane might nab a couple of goals.
Maybe Gerrard instead of Young, maybe Iniesta instead of Villa.
And I'd prefer Tymoshchuk or Milevskiy instead of Rakitskiy.

I guess have to closely monitor coming friendlies for assurances with barzagli and Llorente. Mayby i should use given in goal who is also available cheap. Rommedahl i chose coz they've got nothing to loose going against the other three heavy weights and i think will play for the win. He was fantastic in qualifying and could be a healthy differential

just click on your team name then fill in your squad value bids then you have to wait untill the bidding deadline starts then hope you`ve got most of what you then need ! (i think .... its a learning curve for most of us)

yep. you have to make 15 bids.

if you're lucky, you'll bid 1m or 2m for a decent player that no-one else has noticed. bargain.

on the flip side, if you chose 15 generic players and make 15 generic bids, the other managers in your league could beat you to every single one of them leaving you with nothing but the prospect of choosing 15 more players.

              exactly.

you can try and bid for the big boys but may not win OR everyone will go for differentials and ignore the big boys so you can snap them up on the cheap.

          LOL

As usual Jafster is making sure all his "t's" are crossed and "i's" dotted.

I'm really just looking forward to some experimenting and fun in the Euro's, like the World Cup. As sort of "IPL of Footy". Chopping and changing daily and fixtures coming fast.

My worry is many teams(especially on here...) will follow the same strategy and select the same players. Al capitino choices will be identical. As in Euro 2008 / WC / CL fantasy I think a good start is vital and even a 15pt lead after the first round of games will be very hard to make up in ML's.

          What's your take on it?

when the league is set up, each manager gets a "tie order" (ranked from 1-10 if there are 10 managers).

for example, in one league i have tie order 7 so if another manager makes the same bid for the same player, the system will look at the tie numbers.

if the other manager is 1-6, he wins. if he is 8-10, i win.

          Yes!

          But also:

Goals scored by golden boot winners called Muller = 15
Goals scored by German golden boot winners = 20
Total golden boot goals = 77

          Therefore:
          Muller, from Germany = 35/77 = 45%
          Podolski, from Germany = 20/77 = 26%

And this coming from the man himself!

Playing the SS game so slightly different rules/point scoring to McDonalds' version but what are your thoughts on:

    Akinfeev
Rami (Boateng) - Papadopolous - Kadlec - Anyukov
    Ozil - Sneijder - Robben
    Llorente - Muller - Podolski

Admittedly I'm anticipating Group A being incredibly poor with few goals scored as well as Llorente making the most of Villa not being fit and Torres out of sorts.

    K. Papa, Piszczek, Kadlec, Rakitskiy, Olsson
    Snejder, Ozil, Yarmolenko, Dzagoev, Mandžukić
    RVP, Lewandowski, Pavlyuchenko

    Any thoughts?

    What does everyone think of:

    Szczęsny

    K. Papadopoulos Debuchy Alba Evra

    Özil Shirokov Dzagoev

    Robben Huntelaar Lewandowski ?

Think I'll sub Robben for Llorente later on but want two dutch players to play against Denmark first game. As a Fulham fan I feel bad for not having Duff (since he's such a great player and does only cost 5.5) but I really can't see him getting anything against Spanish and Italian defences in weeks 2 and 3.
