Swansea City have this evening confirmed that Brendan Rodgers has accepted a deal to become the new Liverpool manager. After a day of endless online speculation, the Welsh club have finally released a statement, with club chairman Huw Jenkins admitting the Irishman will now take the reins at the Merseyside giants:

I was contacted by Liverpool last night and they expressed their wish to speak to Brendan regarding their vacancy. I had a discussion with Brendan to talk about their interest and his views on whether he wanted to speak to Liverpool. He expressed his wish with me to do that and he has spoken to Liverpool today. Following on from discussions with Liverpool’s owners, Brendan has informed us that he would like to take up their offer to manage Liverpool.

Rodgers leaves Swansea after a hugely successful first campaign back in the top flight, where the Welsh club finished 11th and won a host of plaudits for their brand of possession football.

The former Chelsea reserve team boss will arrive at Liverpool with a huge task ahead of him. Despite the Carling Cup triumph and narrow FA Cup Final defeat, Liverpool undoubtedly define the term “sleeping giant” and Rodgers will be expected to not only bring his passing game to the existing squad but also build a set of players capable of challenging for the top four and, presumably, the title. Rodgers will feel a different kind of pressure for the next few seasons.

In Fantasy terms this appointment is an interesting one. Swansea were unique in the Premier League, in terms of starving opponents of possession and pressing them when without the ball. The involvement of the back four, particularly the full-backs, in pushing forward to support the midfield was also a feature of Swansea’s play that, in all likelihood, we’ll see Rodgers attempt to instill at Anfield.

Dominant possession, a slow patient build up from the back through central playmakers, with foraging full-backs providing width and, significantly, one central striker with a support midfielder, were the mainstays of Swansea’s game. It will be interesting to see how Rodgers can mould the existing Liverpool squad in this image and who he targets to help him make his mark. The role of Luis Suarez, in particular, will be intriguing.

The Swansea squad, with Leon Britton and Joe Allen set to be early targets, are surely set to feel the effects of Rodgers’ departure. The Welsh club not only have to replace one of the brightest young managers, they will surely have to fend off inevitable enquiries for key players from the former man in charge – their upcoming season now looks just as much uncertain as Liverpool’s.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Alreet lads. I see there was a bit of swedish attacking love a bit earlier. I've currently got Rasmus Elm (as an upgrade on andrews). Hasn't scored many for sweden, but has 29 in 81 games for Alkmaar. We were linked with him recently and he was described as a very attacking midfielder. Anyone know where he plays for the national team? Does he start? Has played 29 times for them, I know that much. He only costs 5m, so he could be a good alternative for a cheap midfielder.

I take it that you aren't going to WC after the first game? If you are, I wouldn't go for spanish or french forwards.

I presume that with that expensive midfield, you have jelavic up front? I doubt ireland will concede more than 1. I would upgrade there. Jelavic is a good option if you are not going to WC until the last game.

I will probably get in two french and two spanish in my fearly wildcard.

not sure who I would upgrade him to though is the problem....

team right now by the way:

              szczesny, given
              kadlec, holebas, strinic, olsson, debuchy
              sneijder, ozil, nasri, iniesta, young
              lewandowski, ibra, jelavic

but I may swap szczesny and and holebas to chalkias and perquis and save 1 mil

Huntelaar for me. Top scorer in the freest scoring team. Should play right up top first game. Against denmark.

Who is this holebas guy I keep seeing in your team?

Downgrade nasri and iniesta to yarmalenko/mandzukic and elm/ mcgeedy and upgrade jeleavic to huntelaar. And you have my front 8. So it must be good!

you sure huntelaar will play? the netherlands forward situation worries me a bit. could see any of vdv, robben, rvp or huntelaar dropped.

he is a greek defender, costs 4.5 mil.

who are those players you're suggesting I downgrade too? sorry i'm not too familiar with many of the "smaller"/cheaper players in this game.

also what do you think about robben instead of huntelaar?

Can you see Robben being dropped? I reckon two Netherland players are the way to go if you're wildcarding after Matchday1 but it's so difficult to call. I opted for what I considered to be the most nailed on two in Sneijder and Robben but am worried now that you think Robben could be dropped...

                    huntelaar

TW, did you check with ENR if I can submit Mrs China Mag's rank for the tournie? I'm getting a bit nervous seeing all of the high ranks that are involved. I don't really want to drag in like flynn down to the reserve league due to my less than stellar ranking (Mrs China Mag is not much better, but a bit better she is!!)

I'm not sure that Rodgers would be the best candidate for Liverpool. The squad will need a MASSIVE overhaul if he is going to get them playing the swansea way. I can't see how Andy Carroll would fit in. I know that Danny Graham is a similar forward, but I can't remember a swansea playing getting to the bye-line and crossing a ball in. EVER!!
If they are determined to have them playing like swansea, I think that Martinez would be a better appointment. Am I right in thinking that it was he who started it all off, before leaving for wigan? Rodgers just carried on his good work. It will be very different having to start it all from scratch.

AC will still have his uses and in Rodgers, Liverpud have a manager that is well versed in playing the game the "right" way.

I know the feeling... I was away for a couple of weeks myself but that was mainly due to depression after spurs didn't make the CL.... I really didn't want to think about football for a while.. (kick in the nuts) Once I finally picked myself up and started thinking about my euro team the bug came back...

TW. Everything that I have read suggests that Huntelaar will start as Holland's main striker. In my opinion, whoever is the main striker for holland will score loads of goals. And the beauty of the squad system and week 2 WC, is that you can gamble a bit, so if somehow he doesn't play, you have somebody in your squad to replace him (he doesn't play last day), and then get rid after the first game.

KJH will be the main striker and Robben will probably be deployed in a left centre role nipping inside to have a pop at goal.

there's been a LOT of analysis on Dutch TV about RvP and his role.

most seem to agree that his mega season won't influence coach van Marwijk and he's made that point by giving KJH the number 9 shirt and van Persie the number 16.

van Marwijk has been asked about RvP's deployment and his most quoted comment was "van Persie plays where I want".

i think he'll start 50% of the group games

          ------------Huntelaar-------

I think that's what they're going to do.

Swap Robben and RVP though. Robben likes to cut inside, with RVP basically a winger.

He won't be much use there, so definitely Huntelaar if you're looking for Dutch attack.

Heard Afellay was brilliant yesterday, also saw a video and he really seems to be in good shape. You think there's a chance he might start considering Robben, Hunt and RVP don't seem to be very sharp? As far as i know he is one of Marwijk's favorite.

haven't seen huntelaar play so dont know how good he is but if i were the manager he'd be dropped to allow rvp the striker role. if you just look at how he did this last season i dont know why you wouldn't want him playing there! plus the fact that vdv and robben are better in those support and winger positions than rvp

I just don't know how any manager could drop their top scorer though. Not just Dutch top scorer but the top scorer by a long way of any player in any team in qualifying. 12 goals in 8 games sounds undroppable to me.

and does that mean its rvp or vdv thats likely to be dropped?

problem is huntelaar scored loads of goals in qualifying so can't see him being dropped.. also the comments on RVP by the manager are he will play where I want...

Huntelaar scored loads in the Bundesliga tho. Having not seen him play you can't really make the call that RVP should replace him.

VDV won't start unless Sneijder is injured, he is his understudy

alright good point. its just i was basing it off of how well RVP did.

so that means it will probably be robben and rvp on the sides with a potential for affelay?

Well it is kinda like saying i haven't seen anything of Neymar but i would rather my team signed Grant Holt as I saw him score lots of goals in the league last year.

Robben will start. RVP & Huntelaar could well do. But Afellay is playing himself into contention. It seems Kuyt is falling down the pecking order but then maybe he plays the next warm up, you never know...

            Most think:

            Arbeloa Ramos Pique Alba

            But they have alao played:

            Ramos Albiol Pique Arbeloa

Yesterday's friendly vs South Korea, Pique was rested, Ramos & Albiol played CB with Monreal and Arbeloa fullbacks. Alba spent the whole match on the subs bench.

I think it's between Alba/Albiol, so I'm going for Arbeloa instead.

              The defence will either be:

Not assured, but it sure looks like the RVP on the wing experiment is over. So I think its one of RVP and Hunt will be on the bench.

But read the report yourself and make of it what you will, im speculating here 😀
