Mario Gomez is at the double as Germany see off Holland to clinch their second victory of the tournament. Nicklas Bendtner also notches twice but his endeavours are not quite enough as Portugal steal a late win over Denmark to keep their last eight hopes alive:

Portugal 3 Denmark 2
Morten Olsen kept faith in the same starting XI that saw off Holland in Matchday 1. The Danish boss has a couple of injury worries following last night’s clash, though, after Dennis Rommedahl and Niki Zimling both limped out of the proceedings. The former, in particular, looks a real doubt after sustaining what looks like a hamstring injury.

Nicklas Bendtner’s brace helped his 1.3% of Fantasy owners to a 10 point return while Michael Krohn-Deli continued to make a mockery of his 6.0 price tag in the McDonald’s game – he picked up attacking points for the second game in a row after providing the assist for the Arsenal man’s opener. Olsen’s men still have a chance of progressing to the knockouts, though, and have all to play for in their final Group B game next Sunday – the only trouble is they now square up to Germany.

Portugal were also unchanged from the side that lost narrowly to Germany. Helder Postiga continued as the lone striker in a 4-3-3 and justified his inclusion by grabbing his side’s second, while Nani provided five goalscoring opportunities and picked up an assist but, for once, Cristiano Ronaldo’s finishing let him down. The Real Madrid man had six attempts against Denmark but fluffed his lines every time; a yellow card late in the match meant he picked up a single point in the McDonald’s game and frustrated the many Fantasy managers who had handed him the armband.

At the back, Pepe and Fabio Coentrao (both priced at 6.5 in the McDonald’s game) produced attacking points for their Fantasy owners, with a goal and assist respectively, while sub Silvestre Valera grabbed the all-important winner that leaves them with a chance of progressing. There are a number of permutations in the so-called Group of Death – Portugal could still qualify if they lose to Holland by a single goal and Denmark are also beaten, for example, but the bottom line is if they win against the Dutch and the Danes fail to beat Germany, the Portuguese will be through to the final eight. Given the Dutch’s defensive woes, Ronaldo looks likely to be handed the chance to atone for yesterday’s failings when Paulo Bento’s men next take to the pitch on Sunday.

Germany 2 Holland 1
Joachim Low continued with the same starting lineup that defeated Portugal 1-0 in their Group B opener. Mario Gomez joined Alan Dzagoev as the tournament’s joint-top scorer by grabbing both his side’s goals in the 2-1 win, while Bastian Schweinsteiger provided his 9.5% Fantasy owners with a nine point haul, thanks to a pair of assists and eight recovered balls. Despite Germany’s attacking threat, the likes of Mesut Ozil, Thomas Muller and Lukas Podolski have all failed to pick up any attacking returns over their back-to-back victories and, with just a point needed against Denmark to finish as group winners, their owners will be hoping Low doesn’t hand some of his squad members a chance to shine against Morten Olsen’s side at the weekend. Ozil was the unluckiest of the above-mentioned trio last night; he provided three goalscoring opportunities and also hit the post but currently sits with just five points to his name in the McDonald’s game.

Although the threat of rest and rotation may ultimately prove unfounded when Low names his starting XI for the Denmark game, one thing is for certain – Jerome Boateng will not feature, after picking up his second booking of the tournament. This could perhaps allow Lars Bender a chance at right-back – Low had mentioned him as a contender for the position in the tournament build-up – though the more likely scenario would be to shift Philipp Lahm over to the right and allow 5.9 priced Marcel Schmelzer a chance on the left.

Back-to-back defeats means Bert Van Marwijk’s men have it all to do on Sunday. The Holland boss welcomed back Joris Mathijsen to the heart of defence for last night’s defeat but the Dutch looked ill-at-ease at the back and were picked apart by Schweinsteiger’s superb passes for the Gomez goals. A couple of second half changes may indicate what’s to come for the Portugal match, as Mark Van Bommel and Ibrahim Afellay made way for Rafael Van Der Vaart and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar. Priced at 6.5 in the McDonald’s game, Afellay has picked up over 8% ownership after his performances on the left in recent friendlies – of the two, his absence would be a far more significant for Fantasy managers if Van Marwijk chooses to shake things up; with the Holland boss critical of his wide men post-match, this may well prove to be the case.

With Wesley Sneijder moving from a central position to the left and Robin Van Persie partnered by Huntelaar, Holland looked far more threatening, though Germany seemed content to sit deep and hit on the counter. Sneijder created six goalscoring opportunities and picked up an assist for Van Persie’s consolation, with the latter managing a total of four attempts on the German goal.

Arjen Robben’s Fantasy owners will be a little apprehensive after the winger threw a strop when Van Marwijk chose to replace him with Dirk Kuyt towards the end – the show of insolence won’t go down well with the no-nonsense manager. Nothing less than a win is required in their final match against Portugal, then, and, while that still might not be enough to see them through, a more attack-minded outlook will surely be in Van Marwijk’s thoughts as he seeks to re-establish a sense of pride in his side’s play at the very least.

    Having some strong captaincy candidates today:

    Mandzukic - OOP and in form
    Iniesta - OOP
    Fabregas - OOP
    Cassano

    Downside of Mandzukic is the Italian defence, Del Bosque might come to his senses and play with a striker instead of Cesc, Cassano might get rested, but will know this before the deadline. Does that leave me with Iniesta as the only sensible choice?

    I'm trailing by a few points in my mini league

    Who thinks Netherlands will still qualify?

    As long as Germany beat Denmark, if Netherlands beat Portugal by 2 goals that puts them ahead on goal difference.

      Not if they keep playing the way they've been playing....it would need a real lift in defensive solitude to win a game (let alone by 2 goals)

          No, Netherlands outscore Portugal by 1 and they will be on -1, so will Portugal.

          If Netherlands outscore Portugal by 2 and they will be on 0, and Portugal will be on -2.

      If Denmark lose to Germany and Holland win by 1 goal, it'll come down to goals scored because each of the 3 teams will be on 3 points and the same goal difference in the games between them. Hence, the 2 results will matter. However, if Denmark lose and Holland beat Portugal by 2 goals, Holland will go through regardless of what the actualy score is.

    Hopefully the Fab injury stories are red herring to Keep Ireland guessing. So annoying that it's always the late game that you need to know the team. If you had both Fabregas and Iniesta would you still give the armband to Fab if there is no more news, or is it just too risky?

          I think their threat is about equal, especially when you consider that Fabregas might not even start if he is fit to play, or if he does start he'll probably be one of the first to be subbed off.

          To me its all about risk v reward

          risks - Fab nit guaranteed to start due to possible injury and also feeling they may play with a striker (llorente touted)

          v

          reward - IMHO I would say its 50/50 regarding who will score more points and didnt Fab not complete the game

          so on that basis youve got to go for iniesta

        Captains for today?

        Hope Spain play a striker, thinking Di Natale (likely to replace Balotelli isnt he?)and Torres/llorente for the evening match? Del Bosque won't go with no striker verses Ireland surely will he?

              Only suggestions that he was happy with his experiment of playing Fabregas there... nothing that suggests strongly either way that he'll start with Llorente/Negredo/Torres or stick with Fabregas there.

        Who's bright idea was it for England to waste all this time flying back and forth between their base and the games they have. If there is a wrong way of doing things the FA will always manage to find the way to do it.

          Two hours flights are no big deal, many of the players do it regularly in the Prem, and even a UKR base would have involved flying Training is more about tactics and conditioning, you don't want players blowing themselves out on the training pitch. With so much down time, this is not any problem at all, and Woy has clearly decided it is more important to have a better base rather than switch.

          7 out of 10 countries who have most of their games in ukraine are staying in Poland. Because they are all scared. Of racism and violence and so on that was supposed to be in Ukraine. This is official, many reporters are laughing at countries like this. Having done no research and pretty much basing their opinion on nothing. Now they are making their players tired, by travelling for no reason. As all the violence is coming from the russians in poland :D. Which all normal people saw coming 😀

              There are scummy people and good people everywhere you go. You only have to look at the riots last year. They were torching peoples homes and livelihoods but noone is talking about the dangers of London ahead of the Olympics. It's always a very small minority that make it look a lot worse than it is. Stan Collymore spoke to talksport from Kiev saying how nice a city it was. The media can choose to run one aspect of a story and manipulate it because it's 'shocking' and the story sells.

              I saw that but look at situations now, there is total peace in Ukraine whereas, Russian fans are tearing things up. Ukraine and Poland fans are violent, but they usually fight between eachother and other fans who like to fight. There are rarely attacks on innocent bystanders. I saw the clips on racism, but that was probably something that happens in many countries. Look at Italy for example- horrible racist there. Also Netherlands.

            I think England have to watch out for racism in their own camp before they go criticising any other countries.
            Also I doubt that any future king/queen of England, or prime minster of England is going to be anything other then Caucasian for a long time. The same goes for England manager.
            I think people in glass houses should not throw stones.

              get a grip...it's not our fans that chant monkey noises from the stands.

              who are we to dictate the colour of the future king/queen?!

              the choice of prime minister is down to the people and due to the increasing multi cultural society in england i think it is highly likely we will see someone who isnt caucasian. but if there is nobody to vote for then it isn't going to happen?!

              the fact is there aren't many top mangers that aren't caucasian out there.

          The odds of most Defs getting assists is slim, but Alba does get forward a bit. In simple terms though, Alba's there for CS potential, anything else would be a huge bonus.

              That is not too bad, but considering Noren has done naff all since his two wins last year I would say you have close to no chance of getting anything. But then again golf in particular stuff like that is irrelevant at times (look at Michael Campbell in 05).

              Best of luck!

        In response to the question as to who could replace the suspended Jérôme Boateng against Denmark, Joachim Löw said the following after last night's victory:

        «There are many options. We could move Philipp Lahm to the right and play Marcel Schmelzer on the left. We could play Lars Bender on the right, that would be a good option. A three-man defence and a different offensive formation would also be good against Denmark because they have very tight defensive lines.»

        In other words, wait and see - and I wouldn't rule out Höwedes at right-back either.

        "...the head coach has indicated that he will likely start with one [a recognised striker] on Thursday. Chelsea striker Fernando Torres looks set to replace Cesc Fabregas, who is likely to miss out after carrying a thigh injury into the tournament."

          A) It's goal.com

          B) There has been no source saying he will start a striker, only him saying he may well play Fabregas

          C) There's no news on Fabregas injury (but I suspect that it is real)

            Based on no news? Seems like a bizarre thing t write Mac. Why the assumption that Fab is crocked?

              Okay there's no official news out of the Spanish camp yet - I think it is probable as Balague reported it and seems a pretty reliable source.

            Spain only drew 1-1 with Italy and looked a far better side when an out and out striker, Fernando Torres, was brought on. Torres' movement gave the Spaniards a more natural shape, and against a side as defensively vulnerable as Ireland, Spain really should go for it.

            For me, the only doubt is whether it'll be Torres who starts or Llorente or Negredo.

              I couldn't agree less with that Milkman, I'm afraid. Torres was his usual cudgel as opposed to rapier, and I thought they played some very good attacking football against a very good and organised ITA side.

              Yes, they over-play at times, but this is their style, and it inevitably causes frustration when the goals prove harder to come by, but I thought Silva, Fab, Iniesta, Xavi moved the ball fantastically well at times. I give Torres almost zero chance of starting, Negredo is the most likely alternative to Fab, but I'm pretty sure Fab stays in the starts.

                I also think Negredo should be in line for a start too. You can't deny that Spain suddenly looked far more dangerous when Torres came on though, even if his finishing was typically disappointing.

        This was news to me, I always thought goal difference was the most relevant statistic after points scored.

        Seems I was wrong, this is taken from the UEFA official rules:

        Equality of points after the group matches
        8.07 If two or more teams are equal on points on completion of the group matches, the
        following criteria are applied, in the order given; to determine the rankings:
        a) higher number of points obtained in the matches among the teams in question;
        b) superior goal difference in the matches among the teams in question (if more
        than two teams finish equal on points);
        c) higher number of goals scored in the matches among the teams in question (if
        more than two teams finish equal on points);
        d) superior goal difference in all the group matches;
        e) higher number of goals scored in all the group matches;
        f) position in the UEFA national team coefficient ranking system (see Annex I,
        paragraph 1.2.2);
        g) fair play conduct of the teams (final tournament);
        h) drawing of lots.
        8.08 If two teams which have the same number of points, the same number of goals
        scored and conceded play their last group match against each other and are still
        equal at the end of that match, the ranking of the two teams in question is
        determined by kicks from the penalty mark (Article 16), provided no other teams
        within the group have the same number of points on completion of all group
        matches. Should more than two teams have the same number of points, the criteria
        listed under paragraph 8.07 apply.
