A tap in from Wayne Rooney clinches a 1-0 victory for England and sets up a quarter final showdown with Italy on Sunday June 24. France go through as Group D runners-up despite a 2-0 loss against Sweden that saw Laurent Blanc’s side lose for the first time in 24 games – hardly the perfect preparation for their last eight clash with champions Spain:

England 1 Ukraine 0
Roy Hodgson makes just one change from the XI that started the previous match against Sweden. With his two-match suspension now over, Wayne Rooney made an instant return to the first-team as Andy Carroll dropped to the bench. The United man made the difference up front, firing four shots and scoring the only goal of the match, courtesy of a close-range tap-in early in the second half. Steven Gerrard created three goalscoring opportunities and provided the assist for Rooney’s goal – the England skipper now stands on 18 points and is one of only four players to pick up attacking returns in all three rounds of group matches.

Joleon Lescott’s clean sheet and extra point for recovered balls took his tally to 17 points – at 5.6, he’s been the best value player in Hodgson’s side and, like Gerrard and Rooney, can expect plenty of Fantasy investment prior to Thursday evening’s deadline. While the likes of Lescott has over 18% ownership, Rooney has a mere 4.4% due to his recent ban and looks like a decent differential armband option for day four of the quarter finals.

A tournament that had started so promisingly ended in bitter disappointment for the co-hosts. Ukraine’s Matchday one victory over Sweden was no more than a distant memory, as back-to-back defeats against France and England sealed their fate. Oleg Blokhin tinkered with his starting XI, changing four of his first-team for the must-win match. The front two were changed – Andriy Shevchenko was unable to shake off a knee injury and only made the bench, while Andriy Voronin was also omitted, with Marko Devic and Artem Milevskyi handed the forward roles. At the back, Yaroslav Rakitskiy replaced Taras Mikhalik at centre-half, while Sergei Nazarenko dropped out for Denis Garmash in central midfield.

Yevhen Konoplyanka had five attempts but managed a mere one on target, while both Yevhen Selin and Andriy Yarmolenko created four goalscoring opportunities apiece but England – aided by a bizarre linesman’s call – held firm to chalk up their first clean sheet of the tournament and set up a showdown with Italy.

France 0 Sweden 2
Erik Hamren’s men finished the tournament with their pride intact, after stunning the Group D favourites 2-0. The Sweden boss made a couple of enforced changes – with Johan Elmander and Rasmus Elm both injured, Ola Toivonen and Emir Bajrami were handed starting roles up front and on the left respectively. Seb Larsson was the star man on the night for the Swedes – the Sunderland winger provided a goal and assist and had four attempts on goal, while Zlatan Ibrahimovic rewarded his 17% of Fantasy owners by notching his second goal of the tournament.

Laurent Blanc rested Yohan Cabaye after the Newcastle midfielder picked up a thigh problem in the previous match, allowing Yann M’Vila his first start of the tournament. Out wide, Jeremy Menez missed out despite scoring against Ukraine –Hatem Ben Arfa was the replacement as France kept with the 4-2-3-1 formation that helped them defeat Ukraine last time round.

Karim Benzema was heavily backed for the armband last night and had as many as eight attempts, though failed to muster a single shot in target. The Real Madrid man also created four goalscoring opportunities for his team mates, as did Samir Nasri and Mathieu Debuchy but Blanc’s side passed up chance after chance to find the net. With just three goals and a single clean sheet over their trio of group games, the tournament has been a bitter disappointment thus far and, with their unbeaten record now gone, morale in the camp – and Fantasy faith – will have considerably dipped ahead of the game with Spain next Saturday. Blanc will now need to make at least one change for the weekend – Philippe Mexes picked up his second yellow card and is now suspended, with Laurent Koscielny looking likely to replace him at the back.

After seeing Italy in their group, I can't see them beating England in all honesty. They certainly won't get 2 goals or more..

I think Italy have been quite decent actually. But do you think England have been good so far?! I've no idea how you topped the group, you were outplayed (marginally) in all three games, imo.

Easy to be in position at the back, Doos, when you show very limited attacking ambition. Done reasonable so far (I didn't think they'd get out of the group) but will need to up several aspects of their game to go further.

I agree. It's a style of football that doesn't rely on possession but considering they are a new team starting out it's understandable. They are very organised and have flashes of quality, underrated imo.

Excellent against SPA and started well against Croats, but ran out of steam and Bilic's team nearly pulled off a win. Fitness issues, or maybe just the heat, but Croats didn't seem so affected.

And they rather laboured to a win against a very poor Ireland. Could make for quite an interesting chess match in the QFs.

Sweden was probably the team with best scoring ability of all Englands opponents so far. Also better than Italy looking at qualifying stats. So letting in 2 Sweden goals is not so bad, both were bad mistakes too which can be worked on with small time.

the thing is England are making themselves hard to beat. They are letting the opposition play around them but getting men behind the ball and defending well. It ain't pretty but who cares. Watching Spain make a million passes bores me. Counts for nothin if you don't win the game

Agree totally on SPA HillBilly, tika taka bore. Where's the incision? If Croats weren't pressing so hard for a goal themselves, SPA would n't have won that last game.

But if ENG focxus on strength/organisation at the back, they need to have better and faster options for quick counters. I think there's an argument to add Jags to the CM for a three-pronged, play Rooney furthest forward with YOung and Walcott wider ready to spring forward fast.

              yep........even Ox in there.

Wallcott and Ox are two of the quickest players in the competition. Rooney and Young arent exactly slow either.

Italy don't look the quickest so i can see us playing on the counter.

It is more likely that they are more pumped up for a match against team mates or league rivals, with performance improving as a result. Not sure 'knowing them better' really affects his performance.

Just interested - why did you save your wildcard for Semis? Everyone gets 8 free transfers for the semis anyway.

Anyway, nice team except for the pig. I think he's a punt priced as a certainty. If he were 7.0 I'd have him but at that price I'd rather find the extra 0.5 for CR7, like dropping Sifakis for a non-player. Greeks absolutely will not shut Germany out.

    FPL!

Now we've got the fixtures has anyone else had a look at keeper combos? Or have we been too flooded with Euro distractions.

I've done a fair bit of analysis, just wondering if I'm retreading old ground or whether I should unleash my findings on the masses...

OK. Here's what I've come up with. I look at cheaper options, so none of your big guns. And I avoid clashes where you have to play someone vs City, Utd, Chelsea or Arsenal either home or away, and avoid playing away at Spurs, Newcastle, Liverpool, Everton, Sunderland or Fulham.

Here are some suggestions, with the string of opponents said combos would give you:

Great work. I'm glad that it isn't just me who just considers home and away when it comes to rotation!!

For me, the toon, everton and spurs keepers will all be too expensive to rotate. Maybe stoke, sunderland, swansea and fulham too.

I've got my eye on the QPR keeper to rotate. I could go QPR/ Fulham

Right! I would much rather play a decent keeper away at Stoke than home to Chelsea...

Bit jaded with Villa after last season. Their fixtures don't seem to rotate too well with many other teams. Preliminary look suggested Arsenal, Everton or Stoke as possibly combos with Villa.

I haven't given much thought to who's going to be where and what they'll cost.

I would never want to play an away keeper at Britannia, but that might just be me..

I thought a Reading/Swansea-combo looked like it could be promising for the beginning og the season, but didn't check it all that far.

      Euro distractions my friend!

I think Vorm might struggle to replicate his form this season especially if Swansea don't get Caulker back.

It will be interesting to see what price Green comes in at. If, as expected, he goes to QPR and he is about £5m then he could be a decent punt especially if QPR's home form continues the way it left off at the end of the season.

I'm not convinced any of the new boys keepers will be worth investing in. I think all 3 of them are going to struggle this season.

Yes, was thinking that. Should be two relatively cheap keepers too.

Swansea/WBA and Sunderland/Swansea looks good too although I wonder if Swansea will have as good a season defensively this season. Plus both Swansea and WBA got new managers and WBA may not get Foster back.

          QPR/Fulham looks decent.

Very rare all 3 teams stay up, only happened twice in history of the Prem.

Law of averages suggests that, to balance that out, 2 of the promoted teams this year will not survive.

Anyone made more than 34 transfers so far? Hope I don't end up in a tie for first! 😀

Much, much too much Portugal hanging out the back of it, imo! 🙂

I like the balls out approach. Trebling up on germany and portugal defence! One of them has to keep a clean sheet. Don't they?? Having said that, Portugual have a rubbish defence!
