Yesterday we launched sign-ups for Membership for the new season and I mentioned that we had a movie on the way, offering a preview of our current content. The movie is done and clocks in at almost 20 minutes and involves listening to me wittering on enthusiastically about statistics so, to cut to the chase, I’ve picked out some of the highlights…

The New Stats (1 min 55 secs)
Having invested in new data from Opta, we’re now able to offer almost limitless statistics from Premier League matches. We can create stats for every event and plot its location on the pitch. With this information we’ve already provided new stats in our tables that record touches and passes received in pitch areas such as the final third and the penalty box. These additions enable you to assess factors such as a full-back’s tendency to get forward, how much a midfielder is getting into the box, how much service a striker is getting etc. There’s a whole array of new stats and if we’ve missed any you need, just let us know.

Goal Involvement (6 mins in)
A nice new stat – while you may have heard stuff like “Robin Van Persie was responsible for 50% of Arsenal’s goals”, such stats are generated from a players goals scored as a percentage of his team’s total goals. With our goal involvement statistic, we’ve gone a stage further. For a player to be “involved” he either has to score or assist. However, he can only contribute when he’s on the pitch, therefore, what we do with our stat is examine his assists and goals during his time on the pitch, as a percentage of his teams goals during that time. In this way we can get a true stat on his influence on his team’s attacking output.

As an example, based on last season’s data, Jermain Defoe has a goal involvement of 50% – which means that, during the time he was on the pitch, he either assisted or scored 50% of Tottenham’s goals scored in that time.

The New Filters (7 mins 15 secs)
Our powerful filters allow you to slice our statistics by Gameweek, a range of Gameweeks and now home and away matches. Now you can fully assess a players performance home and away and soon our compare tool will make this even easier. We’ve also introduced new “Last X Matches” filters. These work differently to the Gameweek filters. For example, if you select “last four matches” the data will be sliced to retrieve the last four matches for every player, regardless of the Gameweek in which this data falls. In this way it levels the playing field and offers a true comparison of players across a series of matches.

The Match Dashboard (14 mins 10 secs)
A brand new screen, offering a full statistical view of every match played. This filters out the team and player stats so you can immediately assess the key performers in each of our statistic areas – including a clear view on the ICT Influence scores, which uses similar factors as the EA Player Performance Index which governs the Fantasy Premier League Bonus points.

The First Stat Maps (13 mins 15 secs)
We’ve launched with average position maps for each match and average position maps by Gameweek for every player. With the new data, we’re now able to plot the location of every touch, every kick and every shot that takes place in a Premier League match. We’ve started using this data to plot the average position of every player (based on their touches), in every match. More stat maps and charts are on the way – expect the usual – heatmaps, passing maps, shot maps etc. These will be available for players, matches and you’ll be able to overlay Gameweeks or a range of Gameweeks. We’re also building a compare tool to help with your analysis of players and teams.

More to come (17 mins 10 secs)
I talk about some of the plans in the movie and I plan to make regular posts keeping you up to date with work in progress and previewing new features. Next week Ed will be giving the Members Dashboard some love – improving this to offer a full statistical view of a given Gameweek and the season as a whole. More on that next week. Here’s the movie for those who want a glimpse of what’s offer today. Use this link if the movie is not showing below for you.

But...I would not say terrible, come on guys! As an Arsenal supporter, I would say Kos is better; but in the same breath he is prone to give up shocking (be it a red card offense, a wtf back-pass or the over-ambitious challenge in the box) plays. I would still love to have Kos as he seems dialed-in of late on set-piece header opps. Mexes is a sh*t fantasy prospect, but a solid steady defender for France. But still...don't hate on Mexes' game, cause he has 10x the brain of a Clichy. But by all means feel free to hate on his pudgy stature, White Snake roadie haircut and his corny bed tan.

Order of Extreme Valour - FFS Euro 2012 - Matchday 4 Day 2 Report

Note: This is the report for the FFS Euro 2012 award only; there is a separate report for the FFS Friendly World Cup!

Well, you can't say I didn't warn you but in just our 2nd report of this Matchday, ENR has found himself dominating this award. He was the only manager brave enough to spend 8.0 on a German defender and got rewarded heavily when Lahm scored against the Greeks. Both he and In Like Flynn selected Khedira who scored his second ever international goal last night with a venomous volley. Both of these differentials are however dwarfed by ENR's decision to pick (and allegedly captain) Greek forward Salpingidis. His goal and assist have left his owner delighted and no doubt left him confident of claiming his 2nd Order of Extreme Valour Award.

Looking towards tonight's game, we can see a wide selection of French and Spanish differential players. From Les Bleus, Diarra(Sporting ABG), Cabye(Doosra, Ginkapo and Roscola), M'Villa(Gaz) and Koscielny(ENR and Ginkapo) have all been courageously chosen despite them facing the World Champions. As for the Spaniards, supersub Navas is Ginkapo's 3rd player involved in this evening's match. Ramos has been selected by that man again, ENR, Pique has found himself in Milanista's squad while Drinky and Parmtree are valiantly hoping for a Spanish penalty with Alonso in their team

Stay tuned for our Day 3 report and preview of Day 4!

We are half-way through the quarter final stage of the Friendly World Cup. Still no closer to knowing which 4 countries will contest the semi-finals of the inaugural Friendly World Cup. Lets take a look at the Spanish/French picks in the teams tonight.

There could be a bit of a shock in the 1st quarter final as joint favourites and group A winners, Switzerland (JK and James Fitz) trail Mexico by 11 points on a scoreline of 62-73. Alonso, Busquets and Alba x2 for the Swiss tonight while Mexico (Sleep Talk, Snowy84, Boom Shakalaka and MsRed19) have 5 playing tonight- Iniesta, Torres, Diarra and Alba x2.

No such problem for the other joint favourites Brazil (Forca and Epic Fail) as they lead Uruguay 90-73. Group B table toppers have 5 tonight, Torres, Alba x2 and Iniesta x2. Uruguay(4VETS and Emperikal) have just the 3 Iniesta and Alba x2.

Tight affair in our 3rd quarter final as USA lead group C winners Argentina (Canadian Football and Archie) on a 61-57 scoreline. The Argies have Iniesta, Silva, Nasri and Alba x2 while the Americans (Gargarmel and Goldstonemr) have 4 playing tonight- Iniesta, Busquets and Alba x2.

In the final quarter final we have a very edgy match. Japan lead group D winners Chile( Menly and Catmac) by 61-59. Chile have 4 tonight- Torres, Fabregas and Alba x2 while the Japan pair of Wazza goal and Djerbil have 6 tonight. Their players are Torres, Busquets, Iniesta x2 and Alba x2.

    Good Luck to all!!!!!!

Still alive in the knockout cup match against the #1 by the skin of my teeth, despite losing my triple German CS 0_o

    35-29 to him.

Today is when I win or lose it. His big guns play tomorrow: Lescott, Abate and Rooney, but today he has Diarra and Busquets. All my different players are today playing for Spain: Arbeloa, Iniesta, Torres, and I have a captaincy left. If he starts, it will go on him...

The rumoured French team for tonight is: Lloris; Réveillère, Rami, Koscielny, Clichy; M'Vila, Debuchy, Cabaye; Malouda, Ribéry; Benzema

    That's *very* unconfirmed, however.

Most of the pre-match line-ups emerging from the French camp this campaign have turned out to be wrong, so I'm not convinced yet. There's a lot of speculation about Réveillère starting though.

Interestingly, Croatia unveiled a similar system on the left with the use of both their starting and back-up LB in tandem - successfully stifling Spain whilst also creating chances themselves - and France would be doing the same thing on the right.
