Yesterday we launched sign-ups for Membership for the new season and I mentioned that we had a movie on the way, offering a preview of our current content. The movie is done and clocks in at almost 20 minutes and involves listening to me wittering on enthusiastically about statistics so, to cut to the chase, I’ve picked out some of the highlights…

The New Stats (1 min 55 secs)
Having invested in new data from Opta, we’re now able to offer almost limitless statistics from Premier League matches. We can create stats for every event and plot its location on the pitch. With this information we’ve already provided new stats in our tables that record touches and passes received in pitch areas such as the final third and the penalty box. These additions enable you to assess factors such as a full-back’s tendency to get forward, how much a midfielder is getting into the box, how much service a striker is getting etc. There’s a whole array of new stats and if we’ve missed any you need, just let us know.

Goal Involvement (6 mins in)
A nice new stat – while you may have heard stuff like “Robin Van Persie was responsible for 50% of Arsenal’s goals”, such stats are generated from a players goals scored as a percentage of his team’s total goals. With our goal involvement statistic, we’ve gone a stage further. For a player to be “involved” he either has to score or assist. However, he can only contribute when he’s on the pitch, therefore, what we do with our stat is examine his assists and goals during his time on the pitch, as a percentage of his teams goals during that time. In this way we can get a true stat on his influence on his team’s attacking output.

As an example, based on last season’s data, Jermain Defoe has a goal involvement of 50% – which means that, during the time he was on the pitch, he either assisted or scored 50% of Tottenham’s goals scored in that time.

The New Filters (7 mins 15 secs)
Our powerful filters allow you to slice our statistics by Gameweek, a range of Gameweeks and now home and away matches. Now you can fully assess a players performance home and away and soon our compare tool will make this even easier. We’ve also introduced new “Last X Matches” filters. These work differently to the Gameweek filters. For example, if you select “last four matches” the data will be sliced to retrieve the last four matches for every player, regardless of the Gameweek in which this data falls. In this way it levels the playing field and offers a true comparison of players across a series of matches.

The Match Dashboard (14 mins 10 secs)
A brand new screen, offering a full statistical view of every match played. This filters out the team and player stats so you can immediately assess the key performers in each of our statistic areas – including a clear view on the ICT Influence scores, which uses similar factors as the EA Player Performance Index which governs the Fantasy Premier League Bonus points.

The First Stat Maps (13 mins 15 secs)
We’ve launched with average position maps for each match and average position maps by Gameweek for every player. With the new data, we’re now able to plot the location of every touch, every kick and every shot that takes place in a Premier League match. We’ve started using this data to plot the average position of every player (based on their touches), in every match. More stat maps and charts are on the way – expect the usual – heatmaps, passing maps, shot maps etc. These will be available for players, matches and you’ll be able to overlay Gameweeks or a range of Gameweeks. We’re also building a compare tool to help with your analysis of players and teams.

More to come (17 mins 10 secs)
I talk about some of the plans in the movie and I plan to make regular posts keeping you up to date with work in progress and previewing new features. Next week Ed will be giving the Members Dashboard some love – improving this to offer a full statistical view of a given Gameweek and the season as a whole. More on that next week. Here’s the movie for those who want a glimpse of what’s offer today. Use this link if the movie is not showing below for you.

I am 11 points off the lead in my ML. The leader has Silva and piqué and I have Silva and Iniesta. Should I skipper Iniesta or Silva? He will probably keep the armband on CR7. My armband is currently on Badstuber...

Iniesta for me. Silva's outscoring him so far but he's still been getting forward, playing people in and having shots on goal. Not going to say he's due but think he has at least as much potential for a big score (especially with 5 for a goal and a potential CS point)

Order of Extreme Valour - FFS Friendly World Cup 2012 – Matchday 4 Day 2 Report

Amid scenes of weeping as the coffin of the German clean sheet was wheeled into the crematorium, there were two attendees quitely smiling to themselves. Yes, Emperikal and Catmac hit gold with their pick of Sami Khedira who played in attacking midfield for the entire game and scored to return 8 points for his owners, who now share the lead for the award. The only other differential to start, Gargamel's Sifakis, was the victim of that goal and three more. Chalkias and Fortounis remained firmly on the bench and got a big fat 0.

Tonight Spain collide into France in a massive encounter for fantasy players both at the front and back. All the differentials are in attack today. For France, we have Cabaye (Djerbil), Diarra (Snowy84) and Nasri (Canadian Football) with the latter two not assured of a place in the starting eleven according to today's latest rumours. Riding the Spanish wave, we start from the back with Busquets (Goldstonemr, Djerbil, JKisthe1) and penalty taker Xabi Alonso (James_Fitz). Archie has gone for the expensive but highly promising choice of Silva. Finally, game for the big gamble is Catmac who has punted on Fabregas. Another center-forward spot could well put him in the hunt for the award.

The events of last night have reminded me a goal can come from anywhere. You're never safe when you look at a teamsheet. Defensive midfielders, players who aren't meant to start, Greeks... they all can score, even the latter.

    Good luck everyone!

Stay tuned for our Day 3 report and preview of Day 4!

For what it's worth, if the budget stretches I like a defence of:

      Chelsea/City/Everton/Reading/Wigan

If Chelsea + City is too heavy on the wallet,

      City Fulham Sunderland Swansea Norwich

      Utd Reading WestHam Fulham Southampton
      Chelsea Reading WestHam Fulham Southampton

      City Spurs QPR WestHam Fulham
      Utd Spurs QPR WestHam Fulham

      ...all work pretty well.

@Menly, yep I'm half and half. I normally support England first and Italy second but I grow tired of all the crap spouted in the English media and the many issues that have been around the England team for some years now. This has pushed me towards supporting Italy tomorrow though it will be awkward viewing.

Thing is, Italy have won so much ( ๐Ÿ˜€ ), and this match fixing thing has really annoyed me, so I think I'm with England on this one. But its awkward I agree

The thing that worries me is all the anti Italian crap that the media will go on about for years if England win. Its bad enough when any Italian team plays English opposition in the Champions League but this will be a step up.

The thing that bothers me most, as an Italian fan (half English half Italian) is all the negativity that surrounds boring tournament play that wins games, that Italy have done for years.

Wen Italy/Juve win ugly, its called negative catenaccio anti football.
When England/Chelsea do it its heroic, backs to the wall, stuff of legend etc.

That's why I hate the English media, and lots of the English players (mainly Terry), and cannot bring myself to support them. Forza Italia

              p.s. Engalnd will win 2-1

Well, so if you want 3 cheapie one will always be home AND have a favourable fixture.

Mainly for the cheap, £4.0m defenders

      I'll work on that tomorrow

Take 3 cheap but decent defenders from 3 teams that have at least one good fixture that gw. Thus you buy 2 top denders and the three other cheapies. Saves cash.

You have 3 teams and make sure one of them is playing at home each week. This will probably only matter with the cheap teams for the 3rd, 4th and 5th midfielder spot.

For example, 2 premium defenders from City and United and 3 cheap defenders from West Ham, Reading and Stoke
