Joachim Low rings the changes up front for Germany and watches on as his side demolish Greece to clinch a place in the semi-finals. Mesut Ozil pulls the strings and Miroslav Klose picks up a nine point haul in the McDonald’s game, as Mario Gomez’s Fantasy owners are left with a single point after the Bayern man is afforded no more than a brief second half sub role…

Germany 4 Greece 2
The internet had been rife with rumours yesterday of a number of changes for Germany and last night’s team sheet confirmed a nightmare scenario for many Fantasy managers. We’d drafted in Mario Gomez in our droves with the intention of handing him the armband against Greece only to see him left on the bench for the vast majority of the 4-2 win, as Miroslav Klose was tasked with leading the line instead. Low made three other changes – Jerome Boateng’s return to right-back after suspension was expected but the decision to drop Thomas Muller and Lukas Podolski in favour of Marco Reus and Andres Schurrle on the flanks put paid to the idea that Germany have a settled first XI.

Heading into the semi-finals, then, we’re now left with question marks against the side to face England or Italy in midweek – going on last night’s selection, Mesut Ozil seems the only nailed-on starter of Low’s attacking four. The Real Madrid man provided a pair of assists in his role in “the hole†and ran riot all evening – he created nine goalscoring opportunities for his team mates, in addition to firing three shots on target. Reus and Schurrle had six efforts apiece, with the latter finding the net, while Klose was the game’s top scoring German performer, with a goal and assist bringing home nine points.

Elsewhere, the back-four and goalkeeper look nailed-on, as do Sami Khedira and Bastian Schweinsteiger in the double pivot – with the latter content to sit deeper, Khedira is revelling in a more attacking role and fired four shots to Schweinsteiger’s one last night, in addition to finding the net; priced at 7.5, he is proving strong value and is the highest scoring midfielder in Low’s side over their four games so far, with a tally of 19 points.

Fernando Santos made a couple of changes for last night’s match. Grigorios Makos came in for the suspended Giorgos Karagounis in midfield, while up front Theofanis Gekas was replaced by Sotiris Ninis. In the highest scoring match of the tournament so far, Santos’ team still managed to find the net twice despite 24% possession all game, with Dimitris Salpingidis equalling Klose’s nine-point haul after providing an unexpected goal and assist. Giorgos Samaras netted his first of the competition and gave his side brief hope after squaring at 1-1 before Low’s side went into overdrive and simply swept them aside. With a handful of 4.0 priced players available in midfield and defence prior to their elimination, however, many Fantasy managers are looking to hold their Greece assets – the extra budget provides the chance to splash the cash on pricier alternatives still remaining in the tournament.

    FPL Initial thoughts GW1 – 6

Arsenal – Only RVP providing he stays looks a good option given their fixtures, Strong Captaincy Option in GW1 SUN and GW4 SOT.

AVL – Strong set of fixtures, Given or Defensive cover looks a good bet with potential punts on former favourites Nzog and Bent depending on their price (6-6.5 and 8m would be very tempting).

CHE – Strongest set of fixtures, doubling up with defensive cover, Ivanovic my favoured choice and attacking cover in the form of Mata, Hazard, Torres and possibly Hulk would seem a popular option. Watch out for Super Cup complication.

EVE – A tough start at home to United but after that the fixtures look friendly, providing they can acquire the services of Pienaar and keep Baines they could actually start the season well for a change. Jelavic likely to be a popular mid priced selection.

FUL – A mix of tough/easy games could be perfect to be used in a defensive rotation combo (Swansea look a good option) Aaron Hughes could be a possible bargain. Clint Dempsey if still at the Cottage gives a great Captain Option GW1 NOR and 4 WBA, could well be playing up top if they are late replacing Pog and AJ, expect to spend 10m however.

LIV – Just ignore! Fixtures and uncertainty of how they will perform under Rodgers, wait and see.

MCI – GW1 SOT screams Aguero Captain, likely to be no 1 captaincy choice in 3 QPR also. Tevez/Silva/Nasri/Yaya offer alternatives plus defensive cover is always a good option if money dictates.

MUN – GW2-4 needs some United attack and Rooney offers the security, however do we go with RVP/Kun and Wayne up top or RVP/Kun > Rooney could be a popular transfer in GW2.

NEW – TOT and che to start will see little coverage, but then the likes of Cisse/Barfa become attractive propositions again. Beware of Europa distractions.

NOR – Hope for less rotation with Houghton in charge, tough fixtures bar 2 homes games to QPR, WHM should see little investment.

RDG – Harte is an option at the back but you will be relying more on his attacking points than cleansheets. Fixtures suggest ignore.

SOT – mci MUN ars in first 4, it would take a brave (stupid) man to invest.

STO – Tough home games to ARS MCI suggest leave for now, although with no Europa should offer better security especially at home this year.

SUN – Strong home games under MON = cleansheets, Richardson if classed as a defender could be a great option. Sessegnon and Mclean look to prosper again but beware the price hike.

SWA – Laudrup couldn’t have cherry picked his opening games better. Defensive cover will be a popular choice especially if they continue last years home form, with FFS favourite Glyfi Sigurdsson no longer on loan the Swansea attack could struggle, however rumours are that they will make a move for Krohn Deli who has been on fire at the Euros, with Danny Graham a possible cheap striker option.

TOT – After new away Spurs coverage looks essential one of Bale/VDV/Ade if he stays should be in everyones side. Defensively expect a price hike but Caulker providing he can cement a centre back spot should offer great value.

WBA – Liv TOT to start but then their assets look attractive, Clarke has said he will look to keep things tight at the back so the likes of Ridgewell, Olsson/Foster if they stay will be good options. Odemwingie and Long could be transferred into the cheap striker slot should your initial pick fail.

WHM – Great set of fixtures for Big Sam, with everyone looking for budget options West Ham players will be popular. Jaaskelainen, Tomkins, Noble, Nolan, Cole and VazTe offer great squad fillers.

WIG – With Martinez still at the club they will hope to push on from the end of last season, with a couple of attractive home games to STO FUL cheap rotation options could be there best bet, Al Habsi, Boyce and possibly Beausejour if OOP look to be the leading candidates.

Template for picking your team GW1

    One of RVP/Aguero
Rooney (Or one of above > Rooney GW2)
    Spurs attacking cover
    Chelsea attacking cover
One of the top sides defensive cover
    Sunderland defender
    Swansea, Villa, Wham coverage
    5m midfielder (not Freguson)

Example of a squad *Not to price

    Given Jaas
    Ivanovic Richardson Hughes Boyce Naylor
    Bale Mata Nzogbia Noble Lallana
    Aguero © Rooney Graham

Just renewed my FFS membership and had a quick look at the members site. Anyone see the review of the previous matches graphic yet? Only shows one bit of functionality which is "average position" showing where each player over the whole game tends to be positioned. Perfect for seeing who is playing deep or forward in the hole. SUPERB

Average position maps are useless IMO
A player who switches wings for example will look like he plays centrally
      I prefer heat maps

Some chatter that Torres and Fabregas will play, and Sergio Ramos may move to right back (with Raul Albiol/Javi Martinez covering at centre back) to negate the threat of Ribery.

FPL - 5 teams play twice at home in a row GWs 2-3:

Swansea - great fixtures until GW9
Spurs - Mainly great fixtures weeks 1-10 with the exception of new, mun, CHE
Chelsea - great fixtures until GW8 though the Super Cup may cause a problem
    Southamption - terrible fixtures, avoid
Liverpool fixtures - terrible fixtures, avoid

Interestingly, Swansea, Spurs and Liverpool also have two consecutive home fixtures in GWs7-8. Swansea and Spurs still have decent games at that point and Liverpool's look a lot better (STO, RDG). West Brom (QPR, MCI) and West Ham (ARS, SOT) also have two homes games in GWs7-8 but in both cases only one of the fixtures appeals.

New managers make things a little uncertain but double or even triple Swansea and Spurs coverage looks an option to start the season.

I honestly don't see Swansea being anywhere near as attractive as they were last season. I can even see them being relegated. It's a wait and see for me in terms of getting in Swans players.

Despite the excellent work of Rodgers I think a new manager might actually be a good thing. Their form took a dip in the second half of the season. I will wait to see prices first as I fear they may suffer too much inflation.

Spurs definitely do not come into a defence rotation strategy. From glancing at the fixtures I'm struggling to spot any defensively solid cheap teams with good rotation so I might have to forget about the triple defence rotation dream. I'm hoping that once the rotation spreadsheets arrive they will highlight some options that I couldn't see.

Lovely. Not sure I trust Villa but WBA were one of the teams I was thinking of when I posted my idea. Villa players should be cheaper this season.

Ivanovic may not be the big hitter though. In FPL terms, I prefer the racist bedhopper.

Spain - chance of predicting back line
Italy - only midfield relatively certain
        France - cheapish
        England cheapish players
