Reading confirmed their third signing of the summer transfer window earlier this week with the capture of Pavel Pogrebnyak on a free transfer. After finally being granted a work permit, the 28-year-old arrives on a four-year deal and follows Garath McCleary and Danny Guthrie to the Madejski as Brian McDermott goes about bolstering the Royals first-team options for the season ahead.

The deal is a major coup for the promoted club – Pogrebnyak was expected to sign a permanent deal at Fulham after his hugely successful loan spell at the Cottage last term but, after meeting with owner Anton Zingarevich, decided to opt for Reading instead. A clearly delighted McDermott, enthused over the player’s acquisition, went on to say:

Pavel is exactly the kind of player that we need. I know him really well as a player and have been watching him closely for some time. I believe he is a ‘Reading’ player in that he works very hard for the team. He’s a team player and he can also score goals….We’re delighted. It’s been a long process to get Pavel to the club and now he’s officially a Reading player and everyone is looking forward to working with him.

The Statistics

Pogrebnyak started playing at the age of six for the Spartak Moscow football school and rose up through the ranks before making his first-team appearance at the age of 19. He failed to convince, though, scoring just twice in 18 matches and was farmed out on loan to a variety of teams over the next three campaigns before being snapped up by Russian outfit Tom Tomsk in 2006. He lasted just a season, scoring 13 goals in 26 games, before Zenit St Petersburg came calling. Over three campaigns he racked up 39 goals in 90 appearances in all competitions before Pogrebnyak then moved to the Bundesliga to join Stuttgart.

His time in the German top-flight failed to harvest the goals, though; the Russian found the net just 15 times in 68 league games before making his way to Fulham midway through last season. At the Cottage, he wasted little time in settling in, grabbing six goals in just 12 games – an average of 4.5 points per game in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game was second only to Clint Dempsey for Martin Jol’s side before Pogrebnyak’s loan deal expired at the end of the season.

The Prospects

Certainly, Pogrebnyak looks nailed-on to be installed as one of Reading’s front two for the season ahead. McDermott favours a 4-4-2, with plenty of crosses from out wide and a conventional front two leading the line – with the Russian set to be handed the target man role, a drop down the pecking order for Jason Roberts looks on the cards at the Madejski. The Reading boss will be hoping his new signing can bolster an attack that scored just 69 times last season; considerably less than fellow promoted clubs Southampton (85) and West Ham (81) and a stat that is likely to make Fantasy managers think twice over investing in the Royals’ attacking options.

Bearing in mind he is turning out for a promoted side, a price of 5.5 looks the most likely valuation for Pogrebnyak. His form for Fulham suggests he could flourish as a cut-price alternative next term, though the downside is a lack of spot-kick duties, with Ian Harte the club’s number one penalty taker. Fantasy managers shopping around for value forwards from the promoted clubs will perhaps be more inclined to lean towards Rickie Lambert – the Southampton forward is nailed-on for spot-kicks under Nigel Adkins.

A double Gameweek 1 may tempt many to take a punt on Pogrebnyak, though. Reading play host to Stoke before travelling to Chelsea before their schedule stiffens. With a trip to Sunderland, a blank Gameweek and home clashes against Spurs and Newcastle by Gameweek 6, Pogrebnyak will need to bring his Fulham form to the table in order to justify his inclusion in our teams over the opening part of the season.

Surprised at the lack of mentions for Lukas Podolski or Olivier Giroud?

I guess it's because it's a guessing game as to how Arsenal will line up at the minute. Will RVP be sold? Will we bring in a replacement? Personally, i think Giroud is his replacement, he'll come in at around 9 and could be a very good pick.

Lucas reminds me of Robinho, a showman, lack of end product, often gives the ball away.

Ganso started off well but has really gone of the boil lately.

Neymar & Oscar are the biggest talents in Brazil for me.

Think Moura can definitely be better than Ganso.

Ganso for me is a one footed flat track bully and also requires plenty of time to settle on the ball. Can be very good but hasn't progressed as a player whatsoever from his breakthrough days. Think that Neymar makes him look a lot better than he is.

Lucas Moura is talented, has trcikery, pace, power and great technical ability but gives the ball away trying over ambitious passes and is very selfish. This will probably be solved with experience.

Assuming you play 3-5-2 or 3-4-3 you pick two expensive defender who you can play vs anyone (City + United for example) and then rotate between the other 3 for the final spot.
I find it's the best strategy to use eventually, but at the start I'll personally go 1 + rotating defenders until team value is built up and proper bargains are spotted 🙂

No, for pure home/away rotation the first is the best as it works 38/38 but its only good if the teams in question are getting clean sheets. Teams that rotate say 34-36/38 weeks may be a better option. Swansea/Newcastle was undoubtedly the best cheap rotation pair last season and they rotated 36/38, not the full 38/38.

    Hart got 166.

I interpreted the exact opposite using that analysis, precisely because there will be enough weeks where you chose the wrong one. De Gea + 4.0 million for me I think.

It all depends how risk averse you are. It's much safer to go for Hart/Cech/DeGea and bench a 4.0 each week, rather than rotate to cheaper keepers, because there's no guarantee you'll choose the right two. Or even that there will be two like Krul/Vorm next year.

Obviously hampers the rest of your team though. I'm probably going two cheap myself

But playing Hart every week gets 166 points.

Rotating keepers got 177, and that's with choosing the wrong one a few times. So choosing right most weeks might see you get close to 200, plus saving you at least 2m.

          Have i got that wrong?

There were plenty of times I got it wrong, yes!

But I think what I'm drawing from that analysis is I could even have dropped a further 20 points at least and I bet the extra 2m-ish I saved would have more than made up for it.

When it comes to the new season though it all depends on (a) the prices and (b) how the cheap options perform. Vorm must be one of the best value players (probably THE best value keeper) in FPL history!

I got both of them in GW4 and my total points from keepers was about the same as yours. So I saved 2.5m on keepers (compared to Hart +4m filler) and got more points. Dropped at least 30 points due to benching mistakes but this will aleays happen. Missed out on decent keeper points GW1-3.

Given/Vorm from GW2 I had actually, turned him into Krul shortly after.
I remember Vorm's 11 laughing at me on the bench when Given got 2 or something, pretty sure it was the same week De Laet scored too 😡

Ha, I didn't have Vorm GW2 but I benched cleanies +baps from Enrique and Saylor that week, after benching cleanies +baps from Given and Saylor GW1 😡

Yep. It's a bit like poker in that respect. While luck plays a big part, you also control your own destiny. You couldn't just press auto pick and have a good season.

The fact that FFS used to always top the league of leagues on FPL is proof of that.

I don't really consider that as strategy, it's like in football saying you have to kick the ball not pick it up - hardly a strategy

They won't be anywhere near as bad as Chelsea were because they had Luiz who could defend as well as me and Terry who's as fast as a snail.

AVB's high defensive line requires speed in order to get back if they get through which Terry failed miserably at last year

My draft team structure has just the one expensive defender, who after the DGW could become Vertonghen if he's no more than 6m so not that expensive anyway. That's with 4 defenders between 4-5m (mainly 4-4.5m) and 2 keepers costing no more than 9m. Should leave 65m+ for midfield/attack which allows 5 big hitters, 1 4.5-5m midfielder for the bench and 2 around the 6-7m mark between midfield/attack.

I am looking at Vertonghen/Rafael (if 6.0 or possibly less) in for Terry after the DGW too.

Depending on Rafael's price I may squeeze him in at the expense of a cheapie. I suggested him last night and everyone thought he would be at least 6m. He was 5.5m last season and only played 12 games (included one last sub appearance) so I'm hoping he doesn't go up.

"To celebrate 20 years of Telegraph Fantasy Football, your first team for the 2012/13 season will be on us - completely free of charge"

I play the Telegraph game anyway, though was wondering if discussions on this game will feature more prominently on this site now it's free to play this coming season. Unlike FPL, there is a firm date when the game will be live - Wednesday 11 July. 😉

Sad to see them take FA Cup game scoring removed from the game this time around though.

It's all about Sky and FPL on here, some play Metro too but there comes a point when enough is enough... although there are some real hardcore fans on here who play them all. Most of the discussion on here will be FPL it, would get very confusing if people keep posting about several different formats imo
