Euro 2012 may have been and gone but the small matter of the upcoming Olympics gives Fantasy managers plenty to ponder ahead of the Premier League kick off on August 18. Some of the top-flight’s biggest sides will be sweating over the fitness of some of their first-team assets and, with the final taking place only seven days before the domestic season kicks off, there could well be a knock-on effect when selecting our squads for the upcoming 2012/13 campaign:

The Dates
With so many venues playing host to the games, the group fixtures are crammed into three separate dates. The first set of matches take place on July 26, with a three day break before the next batch on July 29. Once again, we have three days to wait until the final lot of fixtures on August 1.

The quarter finals all play out on August 4 and semis are August 7 before the third-place play-off kicks off on 7.45pm on August 10. A day later sees the final take place at Wembley on Saturday August 11, just one day before Chelsea and Man City go head to head for the Community Shield and a week prior to the Premier League getting underway.

The Participants*

Arsenal – Aaron Ramsey, Chu-Young Park (S Korea)
Aston Villa – Benjamin Siegrist (Switzerland)
Chelsea – Ryan Bertrand, Daniel Sturridge, Juan Mata (Spain), Oriol Romeu (Spain)
Everton – Magaye Gueye (Senegal)
Fulham – Pajtim Kasami (Switzerland)
Liverpool – Craig Bellamy, Luis Suarez (Uruguay), Sebastian Coates (Uruguay)
Man City – Micah Richards
Man United – Tom Cleverley, Ryan Giggs, Rafael (Brazil), David De Gea (Spain)
QPR – Ryan Nelsen (New Zealand)
Southampton – Jack Cork
Sunderland – Ji Dong-Won (S Korea)
Swansea – Joe Allen, Neil Taylor, Scott Sinclair
Tottenham – Steven Caulker, Danny Rose, Sandro (Brazil)
West Brom – Craig Dawson
West Ham – James Tomkins, Mohamed Diame (Senegal)
Wigan – Maynor Figueroa (Honduras)

*GB unless stated

Looking at the participants, Swansea are the most effected in terms of first-team involvement. Scott Sinclair, Joe Allen and Neil Taylor were all regulars last time out under Brendan Rodgers and new boss Michael Laudrup will be sweating on their fitness ahead of the Swans first league game away to QPR on Saturday August 18. With Senegal, United Arab Emirates and Uruguay joining them in Group A, a top two finish and progress to the knockouts looks likely for Great Britain.

On the subject of Uruguay, Luis Suarez is one of the biggest names in the Premier League taking part. Compatriot and Liverpool team mate Sebastian Coates is also selected but his involvement is far less significant for Fantasy managers ahead of the Reds trip to West Brom on the opening day.

Chelsea and Man United both have four players apiece lining up for the Olympics. For the Blues, Juan Mata is the real worry for Fantasy managers – bearing in mind that Spain’s Group D opponents are Japan, Honduras and Morocco, progress seems inevitable. Roberto Di Matteo has already hinted he will give Mata time off from league duties until early September after his involvement with Spain in Euro 2012, suggesting he is likely to be left off our radars – all the more frustrating, bearing in mind Chelsea have a double Gameweek 1 and an outstanding opening schedule.

David De Gea’s involvement with Spain is likely to give Anders Lindegaard a chance to stake a first-team place in goal over United’s pre-season matches, while Rafael’s duties for Brazil may also prove disadvantageous to his chances of a starting role at right-back ahead of the opener at Everton.

Elsewhere, Micah Richards is the only Man City player on duty prior to the league opener at home to Southampton – Pablo Zabaleta is likely to take his place for the Community Shield match against Chelsea at the very least. The likes of Steven Caulker and Sandro will miss Spurs’ pre-season schedule under new boss Andre Villas-Boas, Sam Allardyce will be hoping first-choice centre-half James Tomkins and new signing Mohamed Diame come through unscathed, while Maynor Figueroa featured in every league game for Wigan last time round under Roberto Martinez.

In total, then, only four teams – Newcastle, Norwich, Reading and Stoke – are unaffected. It’s a huge relief for Alan Pardew in particular; Papiss Cisse and Demba Ba have both been omitted from the Senegal squad after the Magpies boss expressed concerns over their fitness. The duo are still expected to be part of their nation’s African Cup of Nations squad in January, though – something else for us to worry about in a few months time.

Oh man, I can't even begin to tell you how important HD is... I can't watch anything not in HD and if if you switch a HD footy match to normal digital during the game you will find it hard to believe you put up with the shit picture for so long. For films it is a must and for natural history programmes, well.. I'm often stuck for words at it's beauty... do it.

          29 Wigan (H)

Four good fixtures in the first six for about 6.5 at the most, for a great player, starting in O'Neills first full season. So tempting.

I think they have a very good chance provided: new defenders play well, they maintain performance for the whole season, they have a striker that scores 20 goals in the league (who that is is anyon's guess).

Last season was a warm up for this season which will end in promotion as champions

What does this mean? Is it like an over under?

I see Newcastle in 7th spot there. I had 20 quid on them to finish the best outside of the big 6. 12-1. So i've got a nice little sum waiting for me to pick up when I get back to the UK next week.

NB My betting slip is almost faded away. Will they still have some sort of record I can claim on if it is unreadable?

I'm not sure why liverpool are placed ahead of us on this, after last seasons performances?

Yeah, it's the over-under, so for e.g. you can either

        a) buy Man City's total points at 85.25 or
        b) sell Man City's total points at 83.75.

Then, if say there total points are 90 you would win (4.75 x your stake) in a) or lose (6.25 x your stake in b)

And yeah, this table effectively puts Wigan and Norwich bottom 2.

This is the furthest I've got yet - since logins are disabled for now, clicked "Sign up" button on FPL page, completed new account page (which looked half-baked - clearly in development) - told me I would get a confirmation email - got a confirmation email with the interesting subject "Dev Lower Premier League Registration - this took me back to the premier league page. Going to FPL I see I am logged in. There are only two available links - "squad selection" and "rules". Going to "squad selection" I reach the end of the road: "the game is now finished".

    Soton
    Reading

given they finished in the opposite order last season?

Depends on what you mean by "well"... Top 10, not really.... Stay up then West Ham for me.

I guess the rankings got to do with off season signings and/or size of club.

West Ham will defo survive and do well due to Big Sam's experience. Of the other 2 imagine soton will do better as they can score against most teams, and reading's reliance on defence last season wont be good enough for the PL

Got to fancy dirty Sam to keep west ham up. Just about. Though looking through there team, there are not many players who would get into teams In the top half. They could do a Bolton I guess. Can't see the other two doing much. Though we all said that about the promoted teams last year!

West Ham will finish midtable with the fulhams and west broms. Soton to just escape relegation in 16th or 17th. Reading to go down with norwich and wigan or swansea

I think this has the potential to be a cracking season. Looking at jinswick's betting list above, there are 8 teams who should seriously challenge for the top 6. Then there is always a surprise team that joins the party Sunderland? Fulham? Villa?

I know zero about computers and website development, but how much time should it really take to set up the site for the new season? I presume they have several people working on this full time throughout the year. They will then have two weeks off when the season finishes. When they come back they will be joined by an army of free lance developers. There was a major revamp last year, so presumably nothing so severe this year. So surely the site should completed and tested by now. Right? Isackis post above has me worried!

Yep agree with all of that, in theory it should come out well earlier than last year. I'm just scrabbling around in the dark, this is just conjecture based on the very limited stuff that's gone live. The rapid tweaking going on now could equally indicate a launch was imminent.

Sounds like Modric is leaving and VdV staying at the moment.

      Gonna repost this….

Anyone fancy a competition to predict the prices of the players in the game?

I’ve selected 5 players from each Premier League club, so 100 in total. The rules are simple: predict the prices that will be given to each player.

For every £0.5m variance of the correct price you are, you’ll receive 0.5 points.

When the game launches, I’ll review all the entries, and whoever has the fewest points, aka the lowest variance, wins.

Just copy and paste the below and post a comment. I’ll post a leaderboard at when the game is live.

As well as the competition, I'll take the average guess of each player and find out the best/worst value of each based on people's expectations.

      @ Epicfail, Morning Epic,

Care to have a stab at your likely line-up so far for this season and give me and all here a bit of a heads up on what looks to me a very decent opening set of fixtures for you?
      Please.

How's Stan? I saw in interview of him where he looked and sounded pretty chipper.

I'm off to work now but will give you my run down when I get back. Remind me if I don't.

        Ciao

Morning everyone, any Pool fans around? If so, do you think Carroll should be loaned out or sold off permanently?
