It had all started so well for Steven Taylor last season. The central defender was a cut-price phenomenon in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game in particular, with his propensity for picking up bonus points, allied with solid defensive returns, making a mockery of his initial 4.5 valuation. Investment picked up pace as his cost began to quickly rise but in early December disaster struck, after a ruptured Achilles sustained at Chelsea in Gameweek 14 ruled him out for the rest of the campaign:

Stationed alongside Fabricio Coloccini in the heart of the Magpies back-four, Taylor immediately showed his worth as a Fantasy asset. His ability to block shots – so crucial to scoring in the EA SPORTS Player Performance Index – helped him pick up maximum bonus points in each of his first two matches and, with three clean sheets in the first four Gameweeks, Taylor started the season with an average 6.25 from his first four appearances.

As Newcastle flourished under the guidance of Alan Pardew, Taylor continued to outperform Coloccini at the back; only twice did his EA SPORTS PPI score dip below double figures in those first 14 matches. Prior to his injury, Taylor had tasted defeat just twice, in visits to City and Chelsea respectively, with his price peaking at 5.1 as Fantasy managers snapped up his services on the back of some outstanding displays. By the time his campaign was brought to an abrupt end, he had returned 52 points, courtesy of an assist, nine bonus points and four clean sheets.

The Prospects

Earlier this week, Pardew revealed the player’s comeback is picking up pace, with Taylor now expected to step up his rehabilitation by featuring in Friday’s friendly against Chemnitzer as part of the club’s pre-season tour. The Newcastle boss went on to hail Taylor’s efforts and admits he should, once again, be a key asset for the Magpies in the campaign ahead:

I’m looking forward to having Steven running around and playing again. He’s an important player for us, and we want everyone fit for what’s going to be a tough season. Having Steven back fit for pre-season is a big boost for us. He did very well last season before his injury.

A fully-fit Taylor is almost certain to get the nod ahead of Mike Williamson as Coloccini’s partner at centre-half, though much may also depend on the club’s transfer policy between now and the end of August. Pardew has also been linked with a move for FC Twente defender Douglas – quite where this would leave Taylor in the pecking order is unclear, though with European football on the agenda, Taylor could be mainly utilised for league action, allowing any new signings time to find their feet in less hectic environments.

Taylor’s valuation across the Fantasy games will be intriguing next season and crucial as to how we view his potential. Bearing in mind that Newcastle racked up 15 clean sheets in the season gone by, first-team regulars such as Tim Krul and Coloccini can surely expect a price hike but Taylor may well prove the cheapest route into Pardew’s backline once again – Fantasy games could look kindly upon his cost, with an FPL valuation of 5.0 perhaps on the cards.

Investment in Newcastle’s backline may not be quite too substantial to begin with. Both Spurs and United visit the Sports Direct Arena in the first seven Gameweeks, while trips to Everton and Chelsea look likely to test their defensive resolve. Home clashes against Villa and Norwich and a trip to Reading offer greater potential and, if Pardew’s side can come close to replicating their form at the back, Taylor is likely to see plenty of suitors snaps up his services for the season ahead.

I expect a Monday launch. I am happy with this as I'm going away later and won't be back until Sunday. So I can get up Monday morning and have a brand-spanking new FPL game waiting for me.

I reckon these will be the changes in team form this season

    HITS
    Villa attack (Unleashed from McLeish)
Fulham attack (Personnel uncertainty and overachieving last year)
    Chelsea attack (New personnel)
Tottenham attack (Siggy and a more complex attack under AVB)
Arsenal attack (yes, I'm a believer)
Chelsea defence (Defensive obsessive Di Matteo could stay in charge for whole season, not half)
Stoke defence (No Europa League this year)

    FLOPS
Newcastle attack (Overachieving last year - personnel largely similar and teams may adjust)
Norwich attack (Lambert got the most out of those fairly undistinguished players - I'm not sure Hughton will)
    Swansea attack (Ditto, for Laudrup)
Villa defence (Lambert was never renowned for his defences)
Liverpool defence (Rodgers' passing game may not implement properly leaving the defence exposed)
Swansea defence (Defence was protected under Rodgers last year by their possession - can Laudrup maintain this?)
Tottenham defence (Jury out on AVB high line)
West Brom defence (Defence became tight last year under Roy, Clarke has never managed alone before)

that is why I'm going there.

Price depending my back-line will be

          Mingolet/Foster

Kompany, Terry (to go to Vidic in GW2) Huth, Fabio, Tomkins/Boyce.

2 big hitters and 3 rotation options that don't concede many at home and offer a decent attacking threat.

So it's the standard 2 + 3 but with some fancier rotators.

I fear Foster may be priced higher than he's worth because of West Brom's upturn last season. Ditto for Mig.

It's all relative - I think it will improve further. We did have lean spells when goals dried up at the start (we barely had a team) and middle of the season (Walcott, Arteta absences).

Don't necessarily agree about our attack. Remember we only brought in the successful 4-3-3 formation towards the end of the season, and dave and barfa played for less than half a season.

We only had one striker for the first half of the season (shola and best don't count). Now we have decent cover for injuries.

We might take a slight dip from the heights of that great run at the end, but over the whole season I expect us to do better going forward.

Yep true, 4-3-3 was a late addition and was stunning. I'm just a bit uneasy about how long this can continue, particularly the Dave and Demba situation. Demba seemed unhappy being shunted out onto the left and losing his goals at Dave's expense.

If Dave, Demba and Barfa (and Cabaye) play as they did last year the good times will keep coming. Will they though?

I think that Ba was just generally pissed off that he was not playing very well, as opposed to being pissed off with dave or the system. He did an interview on french TV were he sounded like he genuinely just wanted to do his best for the team, and was more than happy to do the leg work for dave to score. Anyway, we will know soon enough. If he is not happy he will be off this month due to the get out clause in his contract. I hope he stays, and after a pre-season working on the system, hope he fits better into his position on the left. He'll get plenty of games in the middle anyway. Pardew likes to switch his tactics around, so some games he will play the double dembas right up top, other days dave will need a rest or is injured.

Ha. Moral of the story, get Dave rather than Ba as he will always play more central. Pardew doesn't rotate for the sake of it, so Dave will probably play most games, depending how much the europa league takes out of him.

I presume that we will still buy an up and coming striker as cover.

At the moment, if we get any injury in the front 3, I think that marveaux will come in to play on the right or left of the 3. If its Dave who is injured, Ba will just move into the middle.

Clarke is notoriously defensive minded though.
Spurs defence will all be bombing forward and all have a wallop of a shot on them - might still get points although we shall see.
I think Liverpool defence will be a must have this year. They did decent last season and have their best defensive player returning.

I think it's done on sentencing powers- Harry's case could have had a much serious sentence than 6 months imprisonment which is the max powers of a magistrate

Terry's case is just at the summary trial stage - so just Magistrates

              Oh whoops read that wrong.

Yeah Harry's was not a minor case so went straight to the crown court.

In terms of criminal proseedings Terry's is minor, and so is at magistrates to relieve pressure on the crown courts. Think of the magistrates as pretty much self appointed people pretending they have power.

The key is the nature of the offence, magistrates courts hear mostly civil (e.g. a tort brought by person against another person rather than the state prosecuting an individual) cases and some "minor" criminal cases, in the latter case the defendant can request a jury trial at a crown court instead.

The difference is the type of offence being tried. Mags hears summary offences (i.e. less serious criminal charges), Crown hears indictable offences (in front of a judge)

Hmm looks like VDV is off to Germany then.

I was against picking Sigurdsson in my opening squad but might be tempted now, although if he's within 1 or 2m of Bale, Bale has to be the call.

How are we expecting them to line up?

    Friedel
    Walker/Vertonghen/Kaboul/BAE
    Parker/Sig/Sandro
    Lennon/New Striker/Bale

Obviously Sig would be pushed further ahead of Parker and Sandro.

What about Huddlestone though? His passing ability would be much needed, imo, when Modric goes.

You can play both if you need to stifle the lines against the big teams but on the whole I'd be much more in favour of Sandro playing the bulk of games and Parker being back-up. I think AVB will too, Sandro is very much his type of defensive mid and obviously they share the same language too.

I dont think anyone anywhere will give a us a concrete date or time because they may not be able to deliver this. Stalking Martin Axford or anyone who works for the PL isnt going to help anything or anyone just chill oot and lighten up.

Why does it really matter when it opens as long as it's by the end of July?

End of July gives plenty of time to organise mini leagues, pick teams etc.

Better to get it right than rush out the update really.

People refreshing all the time to get a low id has to be one of the oddest things I've ever seen.

Everyone playing FPL has an ID number that comprises part of the web address of their history page, these are assigned iteratively as people sign up, and for some people the acquisition of a low ID number represents cause for celebration.

I remember awhile ago when I put up a post saying that Steve Bruce was a better manager than Arsene Wenger. I think it was you and only a couple of others spotted it instantly as a joke.....twas wonderful to see all the defenders of Wenger tho at the time.

I couldn't believe the next day with all those posts saying how tired people were waiting up ....surely goes down in history as the best prank on here.

      Carroll won't be going anywhere.

The press have blown his comments out of all proportion and he won't be sending the club's record signing on loan anywhere, especially when his only other striker is Suarez, and possibly Borini (who has little experience in English football)

AC might not be a starter under Rodgers, but he will be firmly in his plans.

How does this look for a Telegraph team? 0.1m in the bank if anyone can come up with any decent transfers? Can switch to a 3-4-3 also...

    Hart (4.0)
    Lescott (4.7), Vidic (4.5), Ivanovic (4.2)
    Dempsey (4.3), Kagawa (4.1), Siggy (4.0), Arteta (3.6), Noble (3.0)
    Rooney (6.8), Aguero (6.7)

    Other players worth considering imo:

    Verm (4.6)
    Baines (4.1)
    Cahill (4.0)
    BAE (3.9)
    Agger (3.6)
    Riise (3.5)
    Saylor (3.1)

    Hazard (4.3)
    Walcott (4.3)

    Adebayor (5.6)

Thanks, yeah forwards are priced really high in the telegraph game, so it puts you off going 3-4-3. If Adebayor goes to Spurs I think he's a decent shout at 5.6, and it might be worth losing Siggy and downgrading Lescott to get him and go 3-4-3?

Cheers. Looking at ways to shoe Adebayor in for Siggy (assuming he makes the move to spurs). Worth doing:

            Lescott, Ivanovic, Siggy & Kagawa -> Cahill (4.0), S Taylor (3.1), Hazard (4.3) & Adebayor (5.6) ??

I actually think Siggy could be a bargain this season, it'll just be interesting to see how Spurs line up. But I'd still take Adebayor over him, and I like the look of those 'transfers'.

    Mornin folks.

Meddling with my Sky teams, trying to find value defenders and midfielders. Settled on either Monk/Harte/Allen or Fabio/Tomkins/Song. The first option has better fixtures but not sure how Swansea will perform this season. Anybody got any opinions how the new manager will affect the team? Are they likely to get a decent amount of clean sheets (10+)?

      Swansea.
      See them getting less goals.
      See them conceding more.
Don't see the same level of passing and possession continued.
Could be, and probably will be wrong though.

Right I just decided to make my own little investment in this season by getting my first Arsenal shirt for AGES. Such a pleasant dilemma - Premier League badge? CL badge? No badge? Long sleeves? Short sleeves? And most of all which player...

Currently torn between Ox, Arteta, Wilshere, Vermaelen, Song and Podolski. Which one should I taaaaaaake? Suggestions of RVP will be ignored.

Long sleeve. Interesting, I was thinking short sleeve on reflex because that's what the players wear right? I guess long sleeve makes it warmer and more generally useful? Also makes me think of past Arsenal teams gone by...

Oak, Moyes is desperately trying to squeeze a deal for Pienaar, but we all know how Daniel likes to squeeze back. EVE have also been linked with Rodallega on a FT, although FUL also well-placed.

That's as far as I'm aware of things.

they've been sliding backwards for a couple of seasons now
the only thing that is keeping them in the midtable is moyes
last season they had to sell bilya to get jelavic and beckford to finance the loan of drenthe
this season the sold silva, which is guaranteed to finance the kit for the team and pay the groundsman salary. and thats it
they dnt have enough depth anymore to sell while maintaning a good playing squad
