Paul Lambert’s first foray into the transfer market as manager of Aston Villa saw the midlands outfit snap up Karim El Ahmadi from Feyenoord last week. The 27-year-old arrives on a three-year contract for around £2.5m and will help address the gap left in the Villa midfield after club skipper Stiliyan Petrov was diagnosed with leukaemia in the latter part of last season:

With his central midfield options largely limited, Lambert’s move to boost the ranks is an obvious one. The new Villa boss prioritised the signing of El Ahmadi shortly after arriving at Villa Park and expects the defensive midfielder to make a substantial impact in the Premier League, as he looks to improve on the club’s 16th place finish under the previous boss, Alex McLeish.

Karim is a player who I feel could definitely improve our squad. He has experience of big club football and also at international level. He can pass the ball well and he could be an important player for us in central midfield.

The Statistics

El Ahmadi was snapped up by Dutch club Twente as a youngster and progressed through the youth academy before being handed a professional contract. His debut came as a 19-year-old in the 2003-04 season and over his five years at the club, he showed plenty versatility by playing on the right of midfield and in defence, in addition to featuring through the centre. In total, he made 89 league appearances for Twente, scoring three times and providing six assists.

His displays as a combative defensive midfielder caught the eye of Feyenoord and, in April 2008, El Ahmadi signed a five-year deal to join the Eredivisie club the following season. After a couple of campaigns as a regular, El Ahmadi was loaned out to Al-Ahli FC in the United Arab Emirates before returning in time to produce his most successful season at the club last time out. Under the guidance of Ronald Koeman, El Ahmadi returned two goals and five assists as the club finished second in the Dutch top-flight and clinched a Champions League slot for the season ahead. His time at Feyenoord produced four goals and seven assist from 94 games, while El Ahmadi has also picked up experience on the international stage, turning out for Morocco on 17 occasions and finding the net once.

The Prospects

While the above-mentioned stats hardly look the most enticing, El Ahmadi’s arrival could help provide a better balance at the back for Villa in the season ahead. As manager of Norwich in the previous campaign, Lambert saw his side concede in all 19 of their away games, with just three clean sheets produced at Carrow Road; clearly, a more combative player who is willing to sit in front of the back-four and break up the opposition’s play will be vital, given Lambert’s attacking ethos.

A low to mid-price valuation across the Fantasy games can be expected, with a cost of around 5.0 – 5.5 looking likely in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game but he could struggle for investment, given his limited attacking returns – more attacking options such as Charles N’Zogbia or even Stephen Ireland will hold greater appeal in Lambert’s midfield from a FPL perspective.

Indeed, it seems likely that El Ahmadi’s tackles and passes may be more suitable for the new bonus rule in the Sky game; coming in at just 4.7, the Moroccan, who was nicknamed “The Governor” in Holland due to his influence in the middle of the park, should prove better value there. Commenting on the style of play the Villa fans can expect, he revealed:

As a player, I always want to have the ball and that is my main quality. I always want the ball and to dictate the game. That’s what I did at Feyenoord and hopefully I can show the fans, the club and the manager my quality.

Certainly, analysis of their opening schedule suggests Villa have the potential to produce over the early stages. Home clashes against Everton, Swansea and West Brom look prosperous, while trips to West Ham and Southampton are also on the agenda by Gameweek 5, handing El Ahmadi the perfect opportunity to hit the ground running in his new surroundings.

El Ahmadi's a good signing for Villa, especially at that price. Hope Lambert gives him an opportunity to nail down a starting place.

As regards Debuchy, French sources are merely saying that Newcastle have "entered into contact" with Lille about signing the player. Don't think that the deal is as close yet as Sky Sports are suggesting, although the player himself is keen on the move. Newcastle have offered between €4-5 million for Debuchy.

Lille have been offered Bosingwa by Chelsea as a possible replacement. Not exactly a like-for-like exchange.

Some interesting stats from OPTA on Liverpool last season:
Liverpool won 50% of their Premier League games with Lucas Leiva last season compared to 31% without him.
Liverpool won only 5/18 (28%) PL games that Gerrard played in 2011-12, compared to 45% (9/20) w/out him.

I think this just shows how great of a player Lucas is, not that Gerrard is bad for the team. As Gerrard played most of his games without Lucas in the team.

Agree with Walcott & RVP but the other 2 had serious 'one-off' type injuries so I certainly wouldn't be putting the on the same bracket.

Don't see why Harte won't be first choice; he's previous experience in PL which I'd imagine should keep him in for at least the first part of the season.

Yes, Nolan is getting old, but need some cheapies. That said may well change Nolan/RVP to Lucas/Aguero if RVP moves.

Don't fancy any of the other keepers for 5.4 or less. Who below that do you think will outscore him?

I assume that this is a reference to the Sky Sports article this morning about Junior Hoilett being expected in Germany over the weekend to sign for Borussia Mönchengladbach. As with their Debuchy story earlier, this is a bit odd as Sky Sports UK are normally extremely slow with reporting mainland European stories, and no German source had heard of this news at all.

The situation so far is that Hoilett and his father have made themselves extremely unpopular in Germany by demanding wages of €3.2 million, whereas Gladbach were only prepared to offer €2 million. The deal therefore went quiet again a few weeks ago, although Gladbach's interest in the player is still there.

But their major priority is signing Luuk de Jong from Twente Enschede. He's made no secret of the fact that he's desperate to sign for Gladbach, but Twente are holding out for a large transfer fee. Only when that deal has been agreed would Gladbach know how much money they had available to offer Hoilett in wages.

So I can't see Hoilett signing for Gladbach until the de Jong saga is over. Both transfers have been dragging on all summer.

No Bent for me. Always get injured when I get him and I am not patient manager. With Bent u need to be patient at least 10 GW's. Also he tend to score when no one expects so he will be benched with brace. So frustrating fantasy player to be owned. I got him in my initial squad last year with Carrol and that was mistake

Because having Hazard and Torres will likely mean weakening the rest of the team to the extent that the surgery will be about 4-5 transfers to fix if it goes tits up for Chelsea GW1.

I don't agree. At most it might need a double transfer to generate funds to upgrade one of them. Given that a bit of chopping and changing early on to react to the herd is a good thing, I don't see it as a problem.

wig / RDG is about as good a double as you can get, so there's no more risk of them underperformign than any other pair of players.

But this means that you are suggesting that Haazard will be striker too? Hmm... I must say I don't like it. I thought Haazard will be midfielder and Torres striker. Problem solved
