Paul Lambert’s first foray into the transfer market as manager of Aston Villa saw the midlands outfit snap up Karim El Ahmadi from Feyenoord last week. The 27-year-old arrives on a three-year contract for around £2.5m and will help address the gap left in the Villa midfield after club skipper Stiliyan Petrov was diagnosed with leukaemia in the latter part of last season:

With his central midfield options largely limited, Lambert’s move to boost the ranks is an obvious one. The new Villa boss prioritised the signing of El Ahmadi shortly after arriving at Villa Park and expects the defensive midfielder to make a substantial impact in the Premier League, as he looks to improve on the club’s 16th place finish under the previous boss, Alex McLeish.

Karim is a player who I feel could definitely improve our squad. He has experience of big club football and also at international level. He can pass the ball well and he could be an important player for us in central midfield.

The Statistics

El Ahmadi was snapped up by Dutch club Twente as a youngster and progressed through the youth academy before being handed a professional contract. His debut came as a 19-year-old in the 2003-04 season and over his five years at the club, he showed plenty versatility by playing on the right of midfield and in defence, in addition to featuring through the centre. In total, he made 89 league appearances for Twente, scoring three times and providing six assists.

His displays as a combative defensive midfielder caught the eye of Feyenoord and, in April 2008, El Ahmadi signed a five-year deal to join the Eredivisie club the following season. After a couple of campaigns as a regular, El Ahmadi was loaned out to Al-Ahli FC in the United Arab Emirates before returning in time to produce his most successful season at the club last time out. Under the guidance of Ronald Koeman, El Ahmadi returned two goals and five assists as the club finished second in the Dutch top-flight and clinched a Champions League slot for the season ahead. His time at Feyenoord produced four goals and seven assist from 94 games, while El Ahmadi has also picked up experience on the international stage, turning out for Morocco on 17 occasions and finding the net once.

The Prospects

While the above-mentioned stats hardly look the most enticing, El Ahmadi’s arrival could help provide a better balance at the back for Villa in the season ahead. As manager of Norwich in the previous campaign, Lambert saw his side concede in all 19 of their away games, with just three clean sheets produced at Carrow Road; clearly, a more combative player who is willing to sit in front of the back-four and break up the opposition’s play will be vital, given Lambert’s attacking ethos.

A low to mid-price valuation across the Fantasy games can be expected, with a cost of around 5.0 – 5.5 looking likely in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game but he could struggle for investment, given his limited attacking returns – more attacking options such as Charles N’Zogbia or even Stephen Ireland will hold greater appeal in Lambert’s midfield from a FPL perspective.

Indeed, it seems likely that El Ahmadi’s tackles and passes may be more suitable for the new bonus rule in the Sky game; coming in at just 4.7, the Moroccan, who was nicknamed “The Governor” in Holland due to his influence in the middle of the park, should prove better value there. Commenting on the style of play the Villa fans can expect, he revealed:

As a player, I always want to have the ball and that is my main quality. I always want the ball and to dictate the game. That’s what I did at Feyenoord and hopefully I can show the fans, the club and the manager my quality.

Certainly, analysis of their opening schedule suggests Villa have the potential to produce over the early stages. Home clashes against Everton, Swansea and West Brom look prosperous, while trips to West Ham and Southampton are also on the agenda by Gameweek 5, handing El Ahmadi the perfect opportunity to hit the ground running in his new surroundings.

              Wheelchair is overrated!

Ive not seen him play consistantly well at all. He may be the best English prospect and have lots of potential but to be called the "Saviour of English football" is a bit much. The English media are good at putting alot of weight on these young lads shoulders.

Bardsley was in the top 10 tacklers last year and has a decnt shot on him
Nzogbia im unsure too. Thought i'd give him a chance.

Assuming we sign Debuchy and noone else then yes, that would be the first choice defence. We're being strongly linked with Douglas though in which case he'd be putting pressure on Saylor for the second CB spot.

Dunno...Hoddle would, presumably, have the pull/contacts to bring in the names. That's likely to be the thinking I imagine. If we've unlimited cheques flying around, we need to be looking at proven Premier League players or even look abroad - I can't see Ferguson or even McCarthy attracting the same level of players.

One of the most gifted players at Arsenal. If he can stay fit, he can be a huge player.

Sometimes I think all of Arsenals current problems stem from that Dan Smith tackle in 2006.

      Sometimes I think about girls.

To be honest its mostly girls.

Dan Smith, Ryan Shawcross, Martin Taylor. Reckless and/or malicious tackles have hurt quite a few Arsenal players over the years.

Jack's problems seem to come from his overuse though, don't they.

He came in at £8.0m last year, but players who come in late / january tend to be decent value.

If he signs for Spurs before the game is released, I'd expect his price to be £10-10.5m

I did not expect anything less, im just thinking that both of them had incredible half of a season last year and are unlikely to continue with form like that. This year other teams will be more prepared for them, and they will dissapoint with valuations like that. To give an example maybe Walters, who scored over his abilities in the first half of the season, and if there would have been new prices after january he would have been 9-10 too.

I think 5.5 is a little optimistic, more like 6.0 I would say. People forget that the toon value's were artificially low last season because there was no expectations on them to do well. This season will come with much higher expectation for the toon, and that will be reflected in their player valuations (unfortunate as that may be).

Surely Man City were more fancied for clean sheets last season than Newcastle are this season? I'm not saying you're definitely wrong in your valuation, I just think we'll see more like Liverpool's last season pricing for Newcastle this year.

Would love there to be a cheap, nailed on path to the City defence this season but suspect it won't happen. 🙁

        From the government of Qatar.

PSG, like Manchester City, are bankrolled by a world government, and as such have access to for all intents and purposes limitless resources.

Either team could buy Lionel Messi if they wanted him hard enough. They would merely have to offer Barcelona a £250 million transfer fee and offer Messi a wage of £500 thousand a week. Both club and player would be foolish to turn them down.

Winning Ligue 1 & CL is much higher than winning PL.

When you look back on your career you'd remember the medals and trophies.

There you go then. It is not stupid to join PSG.

And they can win the Champions' League. If Porto can win the Champions' League with unfashionable (at the time) players, what's stopping PSG?

I'm interested in this too, I'd be in for a 4.5 because they're uniquely rotatable with lots of teams - WBA, WHM and SWA, not interested at 5.0 though.

I really rate him, a lot more solid than Hutton (who I get the impression PL is trying to get rid). Pre-season will tell us more, but definately one for the watch list. Expect a valuation of around 4.5 for him.

Lichaj could be a decent punt, depending on whether PL strengthens in defence. Lowton also depending on what valuation he comes in at

Got the feeling that Hutton will either go or be dropped down the pecking order, so can it will either be Lowton or Lichaj at RB (expect Lichaj to start) with Colins and Dunne taking up the central defensive slots with Warnock down the left. Put simply, if you are looking for value then its between Lichaj or Lowton imo

i think taarabt wil bang in goals this year..going to be the first name on my team..kagawa will be awesome too..looking forward to see how utd set up at the start of the season..i fear welbeck could be a casualty if he plays kagawa in the hole..

any chance you guys see fergie changing the system a tad to fit kagawa + 2 strikers?

I am really wondering about that too. As Fergie likes to say, he does not do any transfers unless the player he brings in can improve his team. I am really hoping for 2 strikers as I cant see him not using 2 wingers and I would be very sad to see both Chicha and Welbeck on the bench.

Can only see Kagawa playing in a 4-2-3-1 behind the main striker personally but I'm not a Man U fan and there are people round here far more knowledgeable about Kagawa's capabilities than me so take that with a large pinch of salt.

How much is Chico? I have monk currently..u think chico will be first choice? Other than that, good team but i think 3-5-2 or 4-3-3 are the optimal formations. Vdv for bent? Or get lucas in for chico - he will rack up bonus points. Allen over de guzman for now - again allen will rack up bonus points and likely to get the odd goal/assist. Terry out for luiz (will get banned for at least 8 games)

From what I have heard, a great professional. Does whatever the coach asks of him. Not a goal mashine but has a good conversion rate, so can put the ball in the net when he has to. I have not seen him play but seems like a guy who knows how to be in the right place at the right time as pretty much all of his goals are from inside the box.

No I've never really fiddled with the values of the ticker, do you have Villa as really awful or those sides as fairly high? I suppose being a Hammer, and rating Swansea this season more than I do that seems quite likely.

No goalkeeper, Just a small cage like game in one of those nike adverts.

Not shocking coming from a United-fan. I still find it odd, to say the least that he was convicted without evidence just so FA could put the lid on that shitstorm. But to be fair, he probably did say some things he shouldnt have, doesnt make him a racist. Evra isnt exactly a lovely bloke either, but thats neither here nor there.

of course i've done spur of the moment things. we all have.

just not biting people in the face, deliberately cheated to stop someone winning or racially abused someone.

nice choice of hero. says a lot about a person.

He "cheated" once, and he got sent off for it. His team went through to the semi`s because of it. I applaude him for doing it, and i woulda done it myself.
You dont know if he racially abused Evra. Only he and Evra knows that.

He`s not my "hero". He`s the best player at the club ive supported for 15 years. Now shut your face.

The real reason I hate Suarez is that he cheated against Ghana in the world cup in South Africa. His racist conduct merely confirmed my enmity for him.

I hate that he's a great forward. I would prefer for the people I have antipathy for to be useless idiots.

He did cheat. An intentional handball is cheating. If he hadn't cheated, Ghana would have gone through. The ball was heading into the net when he handled. I will never forgive him.

“The player himself and those close to him do not understand why these quotes have come to light now, when the Dutchman left Spain two years ago."

Basically this. Suarez admitted to having said it, albeit contextually different. Terry, well you've seen the footage we'll see whether his story stands up. Messi was accused 2 years later, not formally.

Plus if you look at reputation which is important but not everything - Terry and Suarez both have previous for being less than pleasant characters. Drenthe is also a bit of a nutter and a trouble maker too.

It just seems Messi gets away with a lot of things simply because he is a Godlike footballer. Everyone seems to have forgotten when he blasted the ball into the Real Madrid supporters or pushing Lampard, weak example I know, in the CL tie. If Suarez or Terry had been accused of being racist by Drenthe the story would never ever go away, but with Messi it does

lol. Was about to make a similar comment. Heck il make it anyway. Likeing suarez purely on football and ignoring his antics is like likeing hitler as a good leader for the german people - bringing them out of poverty etc. - but ignoring the fact he was a turd sandwich

lol. Obviously the hitler comparision is a bit extreme. But being a rasict prick isnt something that should be waived just because hes talented. Liking him as a person is just wrong - something im sure many people actually do.

You dont know he`s a racist. I myself have said things i regretted while under stress or adrenaline, doesnt mean im a racist. People just dont like him because he`s a bit ot a twat on the pitch and thats fair, but this is just getting old with the racial blurs.

being proven in court to have racially abused someone makes me as sure as i can be of anyone i dont personally know. Things said in anger are a true reflection of his inside feelings - u may regret them but like it or not that nastiness is inside u. And saying its getting old just shows u dont really care about him being racist as long as hes talented

Assuming VDV stays, i cant see how him and Siggy will both fit into AVB's formation. Anyone know?

can VDV play Modric position if Spurs dont manage to sign Mouthino?

i can't see both of them in starting 11 as well

      Possibly:
      Parker VdV
      Lennon Sigurdsson Bale
      Ade

If we don't land Moutinho that is. Could play Sigurdsson wide right as well I guess.

Yeah that could be one way. Looks weak defensively though. I think Moutinho will sign but then neither Siggy or VDV will be starting every game. Add to him being on less set pieces and 9m, i don't think he'll be value for money. One to watch though. I think you have to play Lennon and Bale as the wingers in AVB's formation as long as their fit.

i think VDV will still leave and go back to Germany.

he's widely liked there, it's a stones throw from NL and his girlfriend is a German TV star in with very promising career.

Im kind of curious to this myself. He likes one dm, which would be Parker/Sandro when injured. Siggy would be the right inner mid given that they really wanted him. VDV could get the left inner mid, but that would be a really weak defensive option, and he`s pretty slow and luxuirous. But im pretty sure he`s leaving and they`re picking up Moutinho anyway, which is a far better option for them imo.
