Sir Alex Ferguson has today indicated that defender Chris Smalling will miss the start of the season having suffered a broken metatarsal. According to Ferguson, the former Fulham man will undergo surgery that is expected to keep him sidelined for ten weeks…

“He got an injury on the Wednesday and, straight away, we decided to have the operation so he’s out…It’s difficult to say with a metatarsal but it could be 10 weeks.”

The news follows confirmation that Jonny Evans is also likely to sit out the season openers with an ankle injury. Nemanja Vidic is another possible absentee for United’s kick-off, although Ferguson has been optimistic in his assessment of the Serb’s prognosis. Vidic is building up his fitness following a knee injury that has kept him out since December.

For Fantasy managers, this uncertainty could present the opportunity for short-term acquisitions within the United backline. Their centre-back pairing looks far from certain at this stage, while right-back is a slot that, once again, looks to be up for grabs. Both Rafael and Phil Jones could be set to start the season in Ferguson’s backline, then, presenting a cheaper route to early defensive returns. Rafael is available at 5.5 in the FPL, 6.6 in the Sky Sports Game – the cheapest of United’s defence. Jones, meanwhile, is also available for 6.0, with a 7.0 price in Sky Sports.

While keeper David De Gea’s name has been widely circulated as a likely candidate for our initial Fantasy lineups, due in the main to his 6.0 FPL price tag, these short term alternatives may now be more attractive as coverage options.

Despite De Gea’s outstanding form at the tail-end of last season, his starting role could well come under threat from Anders Lindegaard following his recovery from an ankle injury that saw him displaced as the Old Trafford number one by the Spaniard. Lindegaard is, however, likely to gain the opportunity to stake another claim for the keeper’s jersey in pre-season whilst De Gea is away on Olympic duty. Should Spain make the final on August 10, there’s every chance that Lindegaard will get the nod for the season opener.

That first trip to Goodison presents a stern test for the United rearguard, although the Everton clash is followed by an obliging set of early match-ups that has United face Fulham and Wigan at Old Trafford, with a visit to Southampton providing the filling in that sandwich. All three fixtures present clear potential for clean sheets with Fantasy managers looking to cash in with their initial lineup selections.

Today’s news on Smalling will now have us eagerly tracking the progress of Vidic and Evans, with one eye firmly on United’s pre-season team selections. Interestingly, Scott Wooton has so far started both of United’s pre-season matches in the centre of defence alongside Rio Ferdinand – he retains his place in today’s side that faced Ajax in Cape Town. Wooton is yet to arrive in either the FPL or Sky Sports games.

Given his price tag, it’s perhaps Rafael who currently looks the most intriguing option on offer. He could potentially cement his place if he can start the season and maintain form. The problem here is that he could himself be a doubt for the season opener: Rafael’s participation with Brazil in the Olympics is a concern and another situation that requires monitoring, adding to the increasing uncertainty in the United camp.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Anyone looking at Sess? 8.0 is a bit rich IMO, but after GW1 they have a nice run of fixtures and he could remain OOP.

Not too many options at that price point too.

Thinking of starting with Rooney Aguero Torres.

Then when i know more about starts/form downgrade:

Torres -> Bent by GW3 (if Torres has failed to deliver)
Aguero -> Tevez (if Tevez looks a starter)

This frees up a massive 4m and still gives me a strong front 3.

Then use the 4m to beef up def/mid.

    Genius or Crazeee?

My current mid with this 3 is:

        Hazard Taarabt Peinaar MAloney Noble

Not horrendous, and with no league form to go on, anyone of these players could perform early on. Plus the gamble is reduced by being able to downgrade up top easily to bring in heavy hitters in required.

Something for me to ponder I guess....

well my mid would be similar, but no big hitter, and that is why I have thus far avoided the big front 3 strategy. I have 2 big hitting strikers and 1 big-hitting mid. To get 2 big hitting strikers would leave me needing to find funds for a big hitter in mid.

        Hi,

Yeah good team. I am not going to start Kagawa until I see more of him but that is only my opinion.

Clichy will play most games won't he? I am unsure about whether to pay the extra 0.5m and go with Lescott.

I have Noble as well but i have this niggling feeling that Nolan will end up being much better.

    Hazard, Kagawa, Cabaye, Noble, Guthrie

Anyone fancy spending my last 12m?

    DDG Begovic

Clichy Ivan Player A Tierney Demel

Kagawa Bale Mclean Player B Noble

    Aguero Torres Graham

Some players under consideration are Hangeland, Vertonghen, Michu, Piennar and Nzogbia

My preference, if Michu is 5.5, would be Michu and Vertonghen.

A reading 4m defender will rotate well with Tierney and Demel (that's what I'm doing) could be Mariappa, Gorkks, Gunter etc. we will hopefully know by start of season.

That would give you 8m for a nice midfielder

I have Cuellar. Mignolet's rotates with Krul or Foster and both are too pricey for a 9.5m combo, hence my Al-habsi & Green. QPR will have improved defensivly i think, as will Wigan if they keep to having 3 CBs. Combine that with the penalty save king and i don't think it gets better 🙂

The big Q is always do you get Green or Fabio? Mign or Cuellar? Alhabsi or say figeroa? Stoke I like, but not for first 8 games. tough fix and first need to see who is first choice keeper and if someone like Wilson gets gametime.

I suppose you need to way up the risk of rotation.

Fabio is looking great defensivly but because Sunderlands cheap rotation partners are few, it's better to have your Sunderland player in defence where he can rotate with TWO other players rather than ONE keeper. Fabio is looking great offensivly so he puts a spanner in the works! Time will tell...

Made a tweak to my defence, got rid of doubling on TOT/RDG to allow me to get Bale if needed.

    Jass Begovic
    Cole Kaboul Coloccini Cuellar Gunter

    - Perfect H/A rotation for keepers, will get plenty of save points if no cleanies, cheap keepers usually get similar points to expensive keepers so will invest the money elsewhere.
    - NEW/SUN perfect H/A rotation, both strong defences, went Colo as most nailed on, would prefer Santon but with Europa could get rotated.
    - Kaboul will play most weeks with Gunter filling in when needed.
    - Cole > Lescott at some point.

    Any glaring problems?
